Oki flipped open his phone. A couple seconds later, he was talking to someone in a worried tone. “Mom, I’m not coming home soon.” he said. After he paused, you could here a woman’s voice squabbling over the phone. “My friend, she lost her memory all of a sudden.” Oki explained. Now the voice rose in a stressful tone, you could make out bits of what the woman was saying.
“Why… important… to you?!” was made out. What she asked was self-explanatory.
“I’m sorry Mom. I love you. Good-bye.” Oki said. Then he hung up.
Cody got up and shook Royce and another fellow awake. “Royce! Seji! Get up! Saruko suddenly lost her memory!” Cody exclaimed. Holding his hands to his head, distressed about this sudden event occurring.
“What?” a rather large boy with slightly tanned skin with long bangs and short hair in the back of his head like an anime character. This boy was Seji. “What do you mean ‘lost her memory’?” He looked up at Cody with disbelief. “Are you sure she ain’t just playing around?” He asked sleepily while fixing his hair and rubbing the sand from his eyes.
“Dude! I’m serious! We told her to shut up and say bye to Oki and she just started crying. Like, she had a seriously confused look on her face too.” Cody began. “What should we do?!” he asked. Cody began to tug at his short dirty blonde hair.
Seji stood up and sighed slightly irritated. He stumbled over by Saruko’s side, pulled a chair up, and sat down. He grabbed her head and began feeling about her head. “Tell me if I touch a sore spot, alright?” he told Saruko. Saruko nodded.
A couple minutes passed as Seji thoroughly checked her head. “She didn’t bump her head…?” Seji questioned about himself.
Oki walked over to Saruko and knelt down in front of her. Saruko was looking away from everyone, staring outside the screen door. “Saruko… are you playing around? Cuz this isn’t funny anymore.” He told her sternly.
Saruko’s confused and shy look dissipated into anger. “Why won’t you people believe me?” She whispered. “I’m sure anyone wouldn’t go this far…” she spoke a little louder, tears welling up from her eyes. Saruko yet stared outside.
“Okay! Okay!” Oki said, gesturing he got the point. “I was just making sure.” he looked down. Then looked up into her eyes.
Saruko began to look at the strange people. She slowly slid from Royce to Oki. Oki’s eyes caught hers. Saruko’s expression changed from confusion to a state of shock. She put her hand to her heart and began to blush a deep red that easily distinguished even through her dark skin.
“What?” Oki asked, bewildered by the girl’s strange look and gestures she gave him.
~---- <3 "I'm tired..." he yawned. “Hey, you're comfortable." he said. Then without a thought, Saruko rests her head onto his.
"Funny. Everyone says my shoulders are too bony and uncomfortable." Saruko replied.
"No, you're actually quite comfortable. To me anyway." Oki assured. ~----<3
“I-I just remembered something!” Saruko exclaimed somewhat victorious.
“What?” everyone asked in unison.
“I… uh. I feel like I should only tell the one person it had involved. Which was Oki.” Saruko explained.
“Hey! You remembered my name!” Oki yelled out joyously. He smiled at Saruko. Saruko grabbed his and turned to take him to have more privacy. She began smiling herself. She quickly lifted her free hand trying to wipe it away.
~----<3 “Hey Royce?” Saruko asked.
“Hm?” Royce waited for Saruko to continue.
“You know who I like, right?” she asked, looking down in shame.
“Oki, right?” he looked over, Royce realizing her shameful position. “What’s up?” he asked. Already knowing that something was bothering her.
“Well…” she began. “I’ve never felt so stupid.” Saruko brought her knees to her face. “So stupid about liking anyone.”
“Why do you feel stupid for liking Oki?” he asked. “I don’t understand. Please elaborate on that.” He requested sternly.
“Like… how should I say? Like, I guess you could say the competition of all those freshies asking him out. Not to mention Gina. He likes her. So it’s like… I have no chance.” Saruko explained. “The way I feel… is so different compared to what I’ve experienced with any other guy. It’s really confusing…” she then trailed off.
“Well… haha! Sounds like imouto-chan fell in love. Haha!” Royce laughed
“You think so?” she asked.
“Well it sure seems like it! C’mon! I’ve observed you from afar. You always seem happy, blushy, shy and overall, different around him compared to how you act around anyone else.” he told her.
“So I’m not being--”
“Ah-ah!” Royce cut in. Saruko startled from the sudden intrusion. “You are being yourself. You just show a more true side around him. That’s all.” Royce already knew what was going to get at.
“Oh…” Saruko said in a slightly relieved tone.
“You don’t sound completely satisfied there. Something you not telling me?” Royce asked.
Saruko chuckled. “You know me too well.” she said smiling. “Anyway… it’s just… I realized that a week before I break up with whoever, I don’t feel the same as I might’ve before. So I give time to try gain the feelings that were lost. It’s whorey and dirty, I know. I’m just desperate to have a relationship last for once.” Saruko began to spill. Royce made a funny face at her last statement. He opened his mouth but waited for her to finish. “When I was with Jacob, I did just that. But in that week, I started liking Oki… I feel so dirty.” Saruko grabbed at her hair and tugged at it.
“Saruko… you’re not dirty. Or a whore.” Royce assured. “You know I’m honest and I wouldn’t lie.” he laughed. Realizing she wasn’t catching his laugh, he trailed from his laugh. “Anyway… Love isn’t perfect. There may be traits that maybe you won’t like about them. Acceptance is the key. I’ve seen that you break up the moment you find one thing you didn’t like. So to speak.” Royce explained. “When I feel like I’m loosing the spark, I spend more time with the one I’m with. Or even when you’re falling for someone, you could do that.” He opinionated.
Saruko cracked a smile and looked at Royce. “Thanks.” She hugged him.
“Hey, no problem. It’s what brothers are for!” he smiled.
“Too bad Alex can’t be like that. Then again, he’s much younger and has yet to learn many things. But yeah… I’m so thankful for all my friends. I love you guys.” Saruko said. ~----<3
Saruko let go of Oki’s hand.
“Something wrong?” Oki asked. “You kinda froze there for a moment…” Oki looked over in front of her to see if something stopped her.
“Uh…” Saruko searched for lost words. Beginning to feel Oki’s eyes, she felt a warm feeling on her face. “On second thought… I remembered Opa would be great to talk to… but…” Saruko trailed off.
A tear welled up. “My… My memories. I’ve lost them. I can’t believe it. My memories.” Saruko whispered. Her hair fell over her face covering her eyes. Tears streamed down her face.
Oki couldn’t stand to see her hurt and gave her a hug. “It’s alright. It’ll be fine.” Oki said in attempts to console the poor girl.
From that hug, it was as if a book was unlocked and flipped open, fluttering like the wind was blowing each page by and flashes of faces and names of people. Saruko remembered people she knew, hobbies she enjoyed, and even her classes in school. Saruko pieced together that with each different contact she makes with Oki, she regains a shard of her memory. Seeking for more, she pulled her arms free from between their bodies and hugged Oki closer to her body. As tight as she could.
I remember. All those beautiful, fluttery feelings I get around Oki. All his good and bad traits. The first time I met him. And that… I had went out with him?!
“I went out with you?!” she asked with a look of horror.
“Was I that bad of a boyfriend or something?” He asked offended.
“N-No! It’s just…” Saruko looked down.
“What?” Oki asked calmly yet leaking with anger.
“Why am I not with you anymore?’ she asked, begging to know.
“We broke up. Duh!” he said. Oki crossed his arms waiting impatiently for her to finish.
Saruko grabbed her phone and got a text message from a Shayne. She grabbed Oki’s finger then looked up with a sympathetic expression.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t know.” Saruko apologized.
“Sorry for what?” Oki asked impatiently.
“I-I… head rumors. And knowing about Gina. I’m reluctant to… confess.” Saruko’s voice faded towards the last word.
Oki unfolded his arms and his expression softened. He stepped closer to hear her carefully.
“You understand that I only broke up with you because I was trying to recover from my operation and sickness. Not to mention my grades were epic failure. I couldn’t even bring them up. But get this…” Saruko paused and cleared her throat. “It was also because I was in a paranoid state for I had found out something that I promise not to tell. And that questionnaire where you replied that you wouldn’t prevent me from having sex with you even with the fact that you knew I believed in sex after marriage. That didn’t help my paranoia. Not to mention I was sensitive at the time.” Saruko explained.
“I’m uh… sorry about that, Saruko. I had no idea.” Oki apologized, squeezing tighter in their hug.
“No, no, no. It’s not my fault… I was relationship dumbtarded at the time. Over this short time since then, I learned a lot. And it appears that I… uh…” Saruko looked and began to blush.
“You aren’t very discreet… I could kinda tell.” Oki tired saving her words.
“Oh well, it’s… I somehow fell in love with you. No, it’s not a simple or complex crush, not a big or small one either. Love. I just wanted to say that I love you…” Saruko began to blush a deep red. “I understand you situation… You’re stress, I understand. I needed to tell you. I didn’t wanna be another a*****e and burden you. I just want you to be aware of my feelings. So now… you can reject my feelings, think about it or consider them.” Saruko bowed her head.
Oki began to laugh. Saruko felt her heart crack into pieces. She looked down, letting her hair fall over her face.
It’s okay. I’m only sixteen. There’s plenty of fish in the sea as they say.
“I’m not laughing at your feelings. Just so you know.” Oki managed to say through his laugh.
“Oh? Then what the ******** are you laughing at then?” Saruko questioned.
“I gotta say. I’ve never had something like this. Like, this really wiped me off my feet. No one’s ever fallen in love with me.” Oki said. And chuckled. “I wanna see where this goes. I couldn’t help it… but I’ve let my feelings skip around. Nonetheless, I stayed on Gina. It skipped to you a lot. If you couldn’t tell.”
“My first memory was retrieved when we made eye contact. I had remembered last night in the car when you leaned on my shoulder.” Saruko told Oki. “In fact…” she began. “All my memory was retrieved by whatever contact I had made with you.” Saruko explained.
“Did you get all your memories back?” Oki asked.
“I can’t say yes for sure. I feel like I’m missing a lot more.” Saruko replied.
