“What is this place, I’ve never been here before,” questioned the young woman.
Tress towered high above her and made a dome-like roof. The ground below was all soft, fresh, green grass. It felt like a luxurious carpet on her nearly bare feet. A strange, small tree stood in the middle, alone. Bright light shown down, illuminating the tree. She could see a nest with a small, animal inside.
She slowly approached it. She then noticed that the animal was a small, gray bird. The tiny bird slowly turned its head towards her. Its eyes were a beautiful sapphire that glimmered in the bright light. It watched her walk until she was next to the tree. She looked up at it as it looked down at her. She gave a small smile. She thought that it was adorable even though she knew it was dying.
She placed her full berry basket on the grass. She then stretched her hand out for the young bird could climb out. It looked at her hand then at her. It seemed as if it was considering taking the offer. Soon it slowly made its way out and onto her hand. It was so small that it fit in the palm of her hand. She brought it down and examined it. Its tail feathers were beautiful shades of blue and matched the three that were on top of its head. Its belly was as white as the snow. She smiled again at the tiny creature.
“Well aren’t you the cutest little thing,” she quietly said as to not spook it.
The young bird twittered just as softly, and then looked at the basket of berries.
“I guess you’re hungry. Well I probably can find more.”
She put the bird down in the basket. She saw the eyes grow wide on the bird as it looked back at her. For a few moments they stared at each other. The bird turned away and started to eat. She watched it as she positioned her bottom on the grass. After awhile she noticed that half the basket was gone. Master is not going to be to pleased with me for giving up all this food, oh well, she thought. She didn’t mind that the young bird was eating it all. Finding more meant more time away from him.
Once it finished the basket it looked at her. It seemed quite pleased with all the food she just gave it. It jumped out of the empty basket and onto her lap. It started chirping loudly, almost in a sing-song sort of way. A few minutes had past and the young woman remembered that she needed to get more berries. She gently removed the bird from her lap and stood.
“Sorry little one, but I have to go now,” she said.
It looked at her, then at its nest. She looked at it too. It looked like a very lonely home. Sorry little bird but you can’t come with me, she thought sadly. She gently picked up her basket, still staring at the nest. Then she walked away.
