A two-day story that won't seem very long on-screen. 3nodding Let's start back from the beginning of the PC's history.
Back in January 2002, the Dell Dimension 8200 arrived at that time (Inspiron 8100 arrived on December 24, 2001). It was set up in a "computer hunch." Mind you, this is the PC that Mom barely used anymore, so not all of the advantages have been used, even to this day. Later on in 2002, I would take Mom's hutch keys, power on the computer, and play MIDIs via the Santa Cruz 5.1 Surround Sound sound card along with my younger sister. After that, she password-protected the admin account.
Later on, it had 56K (dial-up) Internet access. Mom decided that she get DSL, despite the fact that we already have it. That didn't work. Some point later in 2006, the PC stopped working all of a sudden. It was proven to be a power supply in 2007. (Part of this entry.) It got moved from the hutch to the Acer's desk in the dining room, then to the other desk in the same room, then to my younger sister's room, and finally, to the basement with the 5th formerly was. Now to the present.
Two days ago on Tuesday, I ran the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update. Everything goes fine until the 'Performing cleanup' message. Let it sit the next morning (Wednesday). Nothing. Took a half-hour to decide whether to let it continue or force-restart (cold-boot) the machine. Of course, the latter option.
After the reboot, it starts to revert to the original configuration, but it freezes in the process. After a few minutes, I force-restarted it again. Grabbed the operating system disc expecting the worst. Instead, I got a message that WinXP SP2 being in an unusable state, so I have to uninstall it. That worked successfully, but everything just went wonky after that. I mean, everything just... went off. I had to grab an extra PS/2 type keyboard since the original one was a USB type, and, well... yeah.
Those keyboard shortcuts sure came in handy, though. Eventually, every piece of hardware was successfully recognized, and I might attempt to reinstall the update, but seeing the specs of this computer, I think not. That's all for this entry.
