Cruising means food... 24 hours a day. Though if you really goof up you can find a time of day where you might have to pay for it. So, what did I have for dinner last night? Coconut prawns with a sweet and sour dipping sauce... dessert was a delicious raspberry chocolate mousse pie. And breakfast was eggs benedict, bacon, sliced fruit, and hot chocolate. Yep, it’s all about the food. *smiles*

Why does cruising have a bad name in Oz right now? I just disembarked this morning, and I have to admit, it was absolutely a wonderful trip... I promise to post some pictures in the Alaska thread a week and a half from now. sweatdrop
I saw 4 bald eagles wheeling around the sky at the same time in Sitka Alaska. I saw and HEARD the Harvard Glacier calve several small iceburgs. The ship was only half a mile from the glacier at the time. Totally awesome scenery. What beautiful country... even a cruise ship full of people can't ruin it. LOL

I remember when I was very much younger than I am now, I did a cruise in Old Yougoslavia, near Dubrovnic, now it's Croatia.
It was supposed to be a cruise on a sail boat. When we arrived, there was a sail, but it was just there to make pretty. We did the whole with the motor. What a shame. But it was good though. We sailed all around the islands in this part of the world, especially to Mljet, Hvar islands ... nice places. What amazed me was that there was very seldom any beaches. The mountains were plunging directly into the sea. It is a very rocky area.
The people were nice, a lot of Italian people there. It is very near to Italy, so the main population of tourists at that time were the Italians.
What was great, was that we fished directly from the boat, and the fish was prepared for us straigthaway by the cook and we ate them fresh. We also picked up some Ursins (oursins in French) and we had them as an "aperitif". They also had ice creams wich amazed me because you had the possibility to have 20 little balls of ice cream, all different and at a ridiculous price at the time, maybe 1cent for the whole 20 of them.
It is great memories though. pirate

Oh my god, this is the best forum ever!
I heart LOVE heart CRUISING!!! I've been on 4 (all in the Caribbean), and I can't get enough. It's amazing to visit so many exotic places, eat awesome food nonstop, take only the stairs (not elevators) in order to work off all that 24 hour ice cream and pizza and the 76-course meals every night, and to let the rocking of the ship lull you to sleep. But the best thing by far about cruising is the people you meet. It's incredible how close you can become to people when you spend an entire week with them on a ship.
So many inside jokes!!! WOCN Radio: for all the fish who like to party! Do the fishy flop! Do the fishy flop! xd
Does anyone get that? (you had to be on the Glory a few years ago...) xd
My dream is to go on a Mediterranean cruise... perferably the 12-day Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas that Samantha Brown (travel goddess of the Travel Channel) went on. Start off in Barcelona, go to France, Pisa, Venice, Croatia, Greece... god, I would die of happiness. mrgreen
The cruise lines I've been on are Carnival, Celebrity, and Holland America. Carnival has been my favorite. They are more fun for younger people (the others are better for the older set, i think), and you can't beat the 24-hour ice cream and pizza. mrgreen

I would absolutly love to go on a cruise. I have not yet had the opportunity. Did you know that cruises are actually cheaper and more cost effective than a land-based vacation? Personally, I would most enjoy a Carribean cruise over an Alaskan, although the latter would have beautiful scenery. Not that the former wouldn't, of course! I'm just more keen to enjoy the wonderful warm weather the Carribean has to offer. I'd have to cake on the sunscreen, though, because I'm so pale! I'd get burnt so bad xp

LOL It's the Hubbard Glacier I believe... and isn't it amazing? I went a few years ago - sounds like a similar cruise to yours - to the glacier, Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau... Did you stop at the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway?

To me, cruises mean heat, humidity, swimming, beaches, and a near-physical need for ice cream. I've only been to the Caribbean on cruises, so I don't know what an Alaskan cruise would be like.

Don't assume Alaska is cold - when I went it was a glorious 70 degrees the entire time - except when we went to Hubbard Glacier which (because it's a giant hunk of ice) cooled the temperature quite a bit. I'll admit that an Alaskan cruise is quite different from Caribbean ones, but not less fun or worse in any way. I loved rafting and seeing the Mendenhall Glacier; or the train ride through the mountains.

While visiting a guy in Anchorage, he took my mother and me on a small cruise (just a few hours - less than a day) around Prince William Sound to look at glaciers. Very interesting and fun. Saw a lot of sea otters.
Actually, I wouldn't mind a cruise around the Mediterranean.

In the summer of 2001, I went on an East Coast cruise. We sailed out of NY. During the cruise, I saw the World Trade Center. Just a few months later, the 9/11 disaster occurred.
