The way he grabbed her wrists and pinned them to the floor in such a forceful, uncharacteristically Mephitis way caught her completely off guard. The way his weight settled in between her legs stirred that dark gnawing feeling in the pit of her stomach that she’d been ignoring for several days. A rush of heat rippled through her core from the point of contact and Aella’s thighs instinctively tightened against his hips, body arching somewhat in reaction to his weight pressing into her. Before she could check herself, a soft, high pitched gasp escaped her lips, catching in the fabric of her turtleneck that she’d pulled up over her nose to hide her face. Meph would see her eyes lose focus, softening considerably as her dark frame of lashes drooped over her irises, giving them a hazy look.

He was yelling at her now, brow furrowed with anger as his words sought to sting but she only registered half of them. The sound of her breath seemed magnified to her, melding together discordantly with her erratic pulse that flickered against Meph’s palms and thundered in her ears. She blinked several times, trying to shake off the grip the physical sensation had on her mental state. This was literally the worst possible time to get distracted by her hormones of all things and she cursed Kalen for whatever he had done to make her like this. Enough clarity set in to suddenly find the situation completely humiliating. Color spread over her cheeks as she realized the kind of sound she had just made, but what made the situation entirely intolerable was that it happened with Mephitis of all people. Aella’s gaze cast itself aside, unable to look at him while she was wrestling with the physical desires that were tugging at her thoughts.

“I would tell you if I could.” She said, her tone softer and breathier than normal. He’d feel her squirm a little underneath him, though this time it didn’t feel like she was trying to throw him off of her. Aella was trying to find a better position that didn’t rile her up so badly, but attempting to wriggle around only seemed to make it worse. Her breath caught and then released in a huff of pure frustration. “Could you…. get off me?”

So much rage, aggravation, and venom spewed from Mephitis' lips as he tore into the other girl for her behavior. Well, he at least thought so. He had never been so passionately enraged like this before! All of the stress that had been weighing on him over the past week was finally being unleashed and it actually felt good to do it. It felt good to just forget about being the stupid hero and yell at someone for once. It was fueled a fire within him that sent a rush through his veins while he glared down at her. What else should he say? There was plenty more plaguing his mind and he would happily b***h about it to his heart's content. However, he really didn't have the time right now as well. He'd just get one more jab in and then finally just knock her out. Well, that was the plan anyway.

"Why can't you just tr- Eh..." All that bluster came to an immediate end as he heard something very uncharacteristic from Aella. Something that he never really wanted to hear in his life and had him questioning if this was another strange nightmare. A gasp that had the boy's entire face turning red. "Eh." It was the only sound that the idiot could make as he continued to stare at the girl beneath him. His anger and hate never disappeared for even a moment but it was aimless now! He was so damn thrown off by that noise that he didn't know what he should do next. It felt stupid to just yell at her now. It felt even worse to know he was on top of her!

The dragon slowly dragging his larger form off Aella's body without even saying a word. His eyes wanting to pull away from her as well, but he knew he should never look away from an opponent! He just crawled back until he was kneeling a little bit away, watching her carefully. The young man coughing a little bit as he got too hot under the collar. How many times had this girl scarred him now? Oh, his dreams were going to get so much worse now.

Aella stayed on the ground for several seconds, taking in controlled breaths so as to not make any more unwanted sounds. When she finally sat herself up, she tugged discreetly at the top of her hood and kept her head turned off into a far corner of the room, somewhat hiding beneath the hood’s shadow and the positioning of her hand. There was no way she was going to bring it up. Never, ever in a billion years, ever, because as of right now, it never happened. And to start them off in the direction of not talking about it, Aella cleared her throat.

“So um, what are you doing here? You look very… mission impossible.” She gestured to, well, all of him. "You got my chalkboard erasers and blacklight beat." Ha! A joke! A bad joke. Her own laugh died out on the second chuckle, super awkwardly. She groaned and pulled her hood all the way over her face and thunked her forehead into her knees rather ungently- because really what were a few less braincells at this point anyway?

Mephitis took a few deep breaths to try and calm himself back down one more. He couldn't be so damn worked up about something like this right now! He had a mission, and he wasn't sure just how long he had to complete it. It didn't help that he had no clue how long the two of them had spent fighting each other. It hadn't been long, right? Just a little spat that maybe wasted a few minutes? He hoped so as he let one last long sigh before glaring over at Aella. Those eyes studying her carefully as he waited to see if she would make yet another move for the door or perhaps to attack him. She didn't. Instead, she just asked a stupid question and then made some... Joke? Was that a joke? He seriously didn't get it if it was. He just rolled his eyes underneath his glasses and headed back to the desk.

"I need something. That's all you should know." Meph answered as he started to search through the desk once again. Clearly, he wanted to act like he had never heard that gasp as well... It was for the best if he wanted to stay focused. His efforts in scrounging through the desk would be far slower as he couldn't use his other hand. The dragon swore he wouldn't leave traces of himself being here and he'd stick by it. He was forced to neatly set articles aside with one hand and then search through them quickly. "Hey, were you serious? You would tell me if you could?"

Okay, well that flopped. At least he didn’t make any comments on… well, anything. So. There was that. Aella nodded once to herself after he got back to his search, took a deep breath, and set into motion herself. “I guess you could say I’m the same.” That was a vague enough response that it didn’t trigger the silence placed on her. While he searched the desk, she crawled underneath it. “You really don’t think I would?” Aella asked him, frustrated that he thought so little of her.

Despite how frequently they butt heads, they had shared quite a few experiences recently that most people didn’t share in a lifetime. Nimble fingers pulled the thing taped to the bottom of the drawer off. It was a key- and not just any key. One of those fancy skeleton kind of keys, but also not. There was something different about it, it had a kind of energy to it. The object warmed in her touch, connecting to her on a primal level that only those with arcane elemental energy might feel- though Meph’s glasses could probably detect the energy signature if he had a chance to lay eyes on it. Luckily, she was under the desk and likely out of his watchful eye- or so she hoped.

Moments after she pulled it from the drawer and gave it a brief inspection, her head quickly snapped up to check for him. If she saw so much as a jerk from his body, Aella would tuck the small object in between her breasts for safe keeping, knowing full well that was a place Mephitis would not dare to stick his hand. If he didn’t notice, well, all the better. It could stay in there until she found what it went to.

"Of course. I swear life is trying to turn us into a constant train wreck." Mephitis grumbled as he continued to flip through folder after folder. The young man's eyes carefully scanning every page but also relying upon the glasses to give him a signal. After all, if he was truly looking for something that interested his sister, it'd light up like a damn Christmas display. There had to be something of power within here, even if it was ridiculously small... But what? His mind floated for a second as Aella spoke up once again. The young man slowing his search as he pursed his lips. "Aella, I can barely think for a second and I have no idea what's going on anymore. That doesn't mean I don't trust you... There's just stupid s**t going on in the background." Mephitis growled before refocusing, "But you can't tell me at all. I see..." Mephitis's eyes grew distant for a moment as he thought about something for a long moment. Memories of his past coming rising up as he remembered his father's own cruelty. Not towards him for once but towards others.

"I know of a few way that can be done. If I had some equipment available and a few certain books, I might be able to figure out what it is." Meph tilted his head to one side as he thought about his sister's company again. He had already procured a few things from the organization to ensure this operation was successful. If he managed to get what she wanted, he might be able to also grab a few pieces that'd help analyze what was going on with Aella. They were the most progressive in the merger of technology and magic. A few scans with the right gear and he could fix it all. "Would you stop me from doing that cause then we have bigger iss- The ******** dragon dropped everything he was doing as he suddenly saw signatures light up on his glasses for a single moment. The young man taking a step back for the moment as he looked desk over... Including Aella. The girl had already hidden her prize underneath her shirt so he was unsure where that strange flash had come from. He just looked at everything, absolutely clueless of what Aella had done. Had his glasses malfunctioned? No, his sister didn't accept anything less than perfection. What had he seen?

Just as she had when Alluvion began to piece together that something was preventing her from speaking. He was finally not yelling at her and he was actually thinking, right? In a flurry, she pulled herself out from under the desk and popped up in front of him, momentarily forgetting her little prize. The more people she could get on board, the better chance she had at being freed right? Mephitis might not be the most valiant person, but he was a nerd. A nerd with some fancy high techy stuff. Maybe he had internet connections like one of those hacker boys in the movies- okay, calm down Aella. And stop staring at Meph like he'd just offered her cake! Except- she couldn't do that. She was stuck looking up at him, imploring her reflection in his sunglasses- ugh, no. Aella lifted up her hands to gently pull his shades down, intent on having eye contact. What she needed to say to him had meaning. Brown furrowed softly as she looked up at him, seemingly unguarded for the first time since their run in over a week ago.

"Have you seen my new tattoo?" Crystalline irises searched the deep, purple hues that seemed darker in the shadows of midnight, imploring him in an almost fragile way to understand what she was saying. Please catch on, please catch on, please catch on.

"Aella?" Mephitis asked curiously as the girl suddenly came up from under the table. What exactly was she up to right now? The poor boy was still focused on that flash he had seen earlier that he almost forgot about their little conversation. He was certain that the flare up on his glasses had to have been the item he needed! Had he pushed something aside in order to reveal it? Was it now hidden under a stack of papers and he just needed to go back through them? Had Aella found it? The young man only had this thought in his head for a split second before he noticed just how close Aella was getting. Those crystalline eyes filled with hope as she leaned in closer and closer towards him. His thoughts floated back towards the issue of Aella's 'silence' in regards to certain topics.

When she went in for his glasses, his instincts seemed to kick in for a moment as his hands came up towards her. The fingertips just brushing against her wrists for a moment but never grabbing on. No, she wasn't the enemy anymore. The two were done fighting at this point and Mephitis was certain she had no idea what he had on. So, he lowered his hands back down and let her take his glasses away. Those pink eyes almost glowing in the darkness as he looked into Aella's own.

"Your new tattoo?" Meph asked with a hint of confusion. Why would she bring that up right now? What point did it have other than... His eyes grew distant again as he remembered times with his father. A singular room hidden away from prying eyes. Mephitis, his father, and a man who had been too clever for his own good. A message to others and a lesson for the boy about the business. The dragon seemed to panic for a moment as took a step back. His breathing becoming short and tears welling up his eyes as he tried his best to suppress the memory. It took a while for the poor boy to recover.

"Wh... Where would this tattoo be?" His words were shaky as he was still doing his best to recover.

For someone who was so thick-skulled and insistent about helping her, she thought he would be… well she didn’t know what she expected really, but she didn’t expect this. The pain that streaked through his soft hues ran deep, allowing Aella an unwanted glimpse into the damage that wrecked a hidden piece of him. She hadn’t wanted that- she’d wanted strength, assurance, knowledge- but instead she’d seen something that connected with her. In that instance, Aella regretted taking his glasses off. What she had been looking for was a one way connection, not something that would in turn snag her and pull at her feelings. Attachments were not something Aella could afford to make. Becoming close with another could only go so far before it ended and the closer one got, the more it burned when they disappeared.

She inhaled sharply as if he’d struck her and she replaced his glasses, gently- but distanced. It was as if an invisible wall had been erected between them. Her lashes swept downward, casting a veil of shadow between him and the windows to her soul. Just like that, he'd been cast out. There was no helping it now. Even if he could help her, she couldn’t afford to accept it now. What she’d seen had struck too close to home. “Nevermind.” Aella said, her tone devoid of inflection. Like a robot, she turned away from him and turned to the bookcase to continue her search like the good little minion she was.

Mephitis was trying to pull himself back from a dark place mentally right then. The boy still shivering at the those horrid little glimpses into a past he would love to forget. He was even reassuring himself that he wasn't there anymore and he'd never have to see those things again. The dragon was stronger than all that and he needed to focus on Aella right now! Still, it was clear that the memory had rocked him to his core and it wouldn't be disappearing any time soon. For once, someone actually got a glimpse at something else behind the boy's ridiculous facade. He hated it... It's okay. We can do something good. We can help someone. We can. We can-

Nevermind

That singular word hit the weakened dragon like a sword piercing right into his heart. His eyes widening as he stared at Aella in confusion, sadness, and disbelief for a moment. Those strong arms and legs of his frozen in place as he just tried to figure out what had happened, letting her put the glasses back without much questioning. She even managed to make it to the book case before Meph's mind started to work again. The gears within whirring slowly as he tried figure out what happened. She had just hinted to him what had been the issue and it sent him to memories he wished had laid dormant. However, when he offered to help, she rejected him. Was it the curse making it so she couldn't show him? No, that seemed ridiculous since she was just talking about the tattoo. So, had she literally rejected him from seeing he was broken inside... Had she seriously just pushed him off cause of that!? Of all ******** things to push him away. Just because he had a single moment of weakness.

"What the ******** is your problem!?" Meph growled as he grabbed Aella by the shoulder and wheeled her around instantly. "Why? Why start pushing me away again, huh? The hell changed your mind in the last ten seconds and said that I wasn't good enough? What did you see that made you turn away?" He pressed forward while glaring down at her with a look of pure, intense rage... But was it really directed at her? "Is it cause you saw a stupid, broken dragon for once? What didn't clue you into that already? The fact that I can't control my own breath? I transform on the slightest bit of emotion? That I'll let myself get beaten to a pulp for someone? You see all that but now you're suddenly going to turn away from me and say 'Nevermind'. That's ******** bullshit! I get it. I'm broken but you know what I do... I keep ******** going. So, what the ******** is your problem?"

The boy wasn't even sure if he believed in his own words. It seemed like years of anger was welling up finally within him as he poured it out all at once. Unfortunately, Aella had become his target for now.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Aella thought that would be the end of it. For months now, Mephitis had backed down from her at every turn. Sometimes she liked pushing his buttons, seeing how far he would let her dictate the pace and tone of their conversations. Until now, she’d never found that tipping point but at this moment, she wasn’t seeking it out either. This was one of the times all she wanted to do was run and hide. It should have been so easy. This was Mephitis after all. So why was she all of a sudden flipped around, staring at her startled reflection?!

The sudden grab caused the teen to gasp audibly, eyes flashing wide as Mephitis wheeled her around to face him. He was taller than her right now due to her practical choice in footwear, meaning he seemed to have the advantage of both size and height. She was forced to look up at him, plush lips parting into a soft ‘o’ shape as her jaw momentarily went slack. Aella stepped backward, needing the space to recover from the sudden onslaught of fury directed at her but there wasn’t much space to take. She backed up straight into the bookcase and what she did gain, he took. Mephitis pressed down on her, invading her space, yelling at her face in a way that made her blood oin and her skin burn hot. It wasn’t just the fact that he was yelling either. It was the words he was saying, everything coming out of his damn mouth, making her feel guilty, making her care. She clenched her teeth against it and shook her head, stubbornly refusing to give into how angry hearing him twist everything she did made her. And then she cracked.

Emotion burst from her in a torrential wave that seemed to just flood out, like water through a damn that had held out until the last possible moment. Aella’s skin flushed hot and tears rose to her eyes, turning them sharp and glassy. These weren’t frightened maiden tears like he had seen in the hallway. They were steeped in fury and tempered in pain and heartbreak.

“BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO CARE!” She screamed back, shoving his chest to make him back off- not that it could make him budge if he didn’t want to move. “DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT?!” Aella shoved him again, as hard as she could. “THEY DIE!” Another shove. “THEY ******** DIE!” A crack lit up across the ceiling, flashing through the office to reveal a storm cloud brewing right over their heads. Aella was beginning to spiral. Light flickered in her eyes, flashing in tune with the ceiling. “JUST STAY AWAY FROM ME!”

This time when she shoved him, it wasn’t the push of a teenage girl. There was power behind it. Compressed air popped out from her palms like the shock of an explosion. A normal person might’ve gone flying, it was hard to say what would happen to a dragon. One thing was clear though, Aella needed to calm down or they were both going to have school security cracking down on them like rats in a trap.

All that hatred, anger, stress, and grief was finally bubbling up to the very top as Mephitis pressed forward. For years, he had been suppressing these volatile feelings in order to try and be the hero. He worked so hard to emulate this unrealistic standard, not realizing he was creating a wound. It was growing and festering with every single strike he took to his soul until finally Aella became the final dagger into his back. Of all the times he actually wanted to help, she denied him! Why!? Why push him back when this was the one thing that he actually wanted to do? He was done getting pushed around, tossed to the side, and just told he wasn't good enough. A fierce, violent gaze hidden behind those reflective glasses but his body language was more than enough to show off his emotions. He wasn't sure what he was going to do but that depended on Aella's answer. An answer he did not see coming for...

As the tears spilled forth from her eyes, the dragon finally began to relent a little. Suddenly, two sides of himself started to battle back and forth within his mind. That would-be hero still standing strong and scolding him for making someone cry like this. Meanwhile, his anger roared back that someone needed to answer for the pain he's been through. However, as she began to scream out at him, his anger lost its focus in the end. Meph's face contorting into one of confusion and pain as he realized what he had just done. A spike driving into in as one thing dawned on him... Aella actually cared about him? No, that couldn't be. Even after she rescued him, she never treated him like a true friend. She just teased and taunted him! Did Meph even know how friends acted? He didn't have any real ones before Sakura. The boy's mind lit up with a thousand questions as tears formed in his eyes. His hands were shaking and his breaths short. What the ******** was he doing?!

Suddenly, his thoughts became silent as he felt Aella give him a push unlike any other. The first few had been weak enough to ignore while he searched his mind. However, this one was different. He could feel the pressure building up in front of his torso before suddenly it all just popped. The young man getting forced back up against the desk. His hands grabbing on to either side as he tried to stabilize himself. If he hadn't been half-transformed, that would have likely sent him across the damn room! He just took heavy breaths to try and calm himself. It was in this moment that Mephitis started to remember that this wasn't the time and certainly wasn't the place either. They were in the damn principal's office having mental breakdowns! He wanted to cry so badly but he would have to save it for later. Security could come around at any time and things would go from bad to worse... Mephitis had an out for that as he was paranoid as hell. However, he didn't want it to come to that.

Those pink eyes refocused on Aella as the boy pushed his glasses up so they'd stay perched in his messy hair. His ungloved hand came up and started to wipe his eyes so he wouldn't have any tears in them. The young man stood up again and calmly called out, "Aella?" The boy stood where he was, not wanting to corner her again. He didn't know how to approach this... There were so many emotions now that everything felt wrong. He stupidly tried to be humorous about it. "We're really bad at sneaking, huh?" He bit down on his tongue as he realized how stupid that sounded, "We can talk about this later... Or not. It's up to you. I-I... I want to help, just know that. However, let's focus on whatever it is we're here for. We'll both take a deep breath. You get what you need, I get what I need. We leave and we..." Mephitis seemed at a loss as to what should come next. He wanted to address what she said but he couldn't! It felt too heavy... Like he might break if he knew more than he should right now. "Let's get this done, okay?"

Though Aella was mostly clad in black, there were parts of her that reflected the flashing light more obviously than others, like the glassy surface of her crystalline orbs, brimming with tears just waiting to spill over her lower lash line. Silver shards of iridescent, near colorless flecks lit up brilliantly in her irises, which were already a glow with the arcane energy that was wresting control. Aella naturally generated a deep well of power in her body that when her emotions reached a certain point, the power began to control her- not the other way around. They were at a dangerous precipice that teetered on Aella calming down and grounding the energy within her but with the way the floor was trembling, it was hard to say if that would actually happen.

The tremors weren’t a lot- not yet anyway. It was mostly limited to the room- almost negligible really. Meph might notice it in the way things say. Items on the desk rattled lightly, especially the more clinky things like the glass decanter and the silver coasters. There was also a breeze beginning to stir. Currently, it was enough to ruffle the fine strands of baby hair that curled around her hairline and shift a paper or two, but it wasn’t going to be sending anything flying. Not yet anyway. If Meph was in the stairwell that one night, he might recognize the potential behind the different elements brewing about- or perhaps not. Perhaps the signs were too subtle to catch his attention when emotions were so very high.

She didn’t reply to her name. Aella looked very much like a cornered animal, ready to lash out the moment anything shifted funny. Her eyes were distrusting and wary, angry and frightened, and they lacked a certain awareness that indicated logical thinking. Meph would find she was very much acting on pure instinct. Both palms flipped backward, pressing back against the bookcase as her eyes flickered around, debating if she should flee or fight but the mention of talking about it later caused her attention to snap back to him. A crack above them lit up the room brilliantly, white light flashing against her fair skin and sharp gaze. She settled somewhat after he hastily took back his suggestion and seemed to listen to what he was saying. Sort of. The light in her eyes was flickering at least, not in the way the lightning was flashing but in the way a lit candle was dimming.

Aella’s gaze became unfocused and there seemed to be an inner battle happening in her mind. The storm above him was not flashing quite as much, but it hadn’t dissipated either. At least the tremors seemed to have stopped- if nothing else. Deep down, she knew she needed to focus on her mission. Failing that frightened her far more that Mephitis did, but her abilities were reluctant to give up control. She ended up caught in an inbetween state, staring off into the distance in a way that indicated she was not lucid, but at least she wasn’t an active generator for a natural disaster either.

Damn him to hell... Why did he have to go and let his emotions get the best of him yet again? The one time he wanted to finally let it out and it all turned out like this! His blind rage having landed him into a far scarier predicament than he predicted. Actually, why did it seem like any decision that he made ended up being a bad one? Now, he had to deal with a side of Aella that he didn't really know existed. Sure, he had felt that temperature drop from the nights before and how warmth radiated out from her when someone was close. This was so much different though. She was able to craft a storm above their very heads and whip up a gust of wind when it shouldn't even be possible! It was as awe inspiring as it was terrifying... However, he was more scared of the possibility of getting caught. After all, this display could easily draw attention to the two of them.

Mephitis took a moment to breath as he rested against the desk. His eyes locked onto Aella the entire time as he started to consider his next move. If this gets any worse than I might just have to dip and leave Aella. It's like that night in the... The boy's eyes went wide as he finally realized something. The lightning and wind inside of the stairwell had been... Aella. But why!? What would she gain from that unless it was just to... Defend herself. His eyes studied her closely as he started to craft a theory within his head. Anyone with this level of power would be looking to control it. However, she's never made mention of it. No studying, no training, nothing! Either she doesn't have a clue it exists or doesn't want to know it exists. So, it's only coming out to defend her... Against me. Being seen as the enemy when he all he wanted was to be the hero... That certainly bought up some horrid memories.

Mephitis shook his head from side to side as he focused on Aella once again. The boy speaking slowly and calmly, "Aella. I'm going to make you a promise right now. I will never ever hurt you. Hell, I don't want to hurt anyone if I can." The various draconic transformations and scales scattered across his frame began to disappear as he let himself return to normal. "I'm confused and scared as to what's going on right now but... I'm not your enemy. I never want to be your enemy." Mephitis held up one hand towards Aella and asked, "So, let's calm down and do what we need to do. I'll help you if you want. Got it?" He then noticed something... The handcuffs. His eyes looked at them for a second as the opened one glinted in the light of the storm. Mephitis didn't make a move for them but instead looked back at Aella. However, he had a nuclear option in mind if she didn't trust him. Well, two nuclear options but he hoped he wouldn't have to do THAT.

The flickering light in her eyes was sputtering out. Aella blinked and shook her head as if she were trying to shake off the very grip the ability had on her mind. One hand rose to pass over her eyes and a rush of energy flooded out of her like a breath held for far too long. Meph would feel a ripple pulse through him as the active mana dispersed into their surroundings and with it, a wave of dizziness and exhaustion washed over her. Luckily, Aella was already pressed against the bookshelf and was able to simply lean against it as fatigue briefly leeched the strength from her body, making her feel faint.

When her hand lowered, she took a moment to look around and remember whom she was with and where she was at. The heavy clouds on the ceiling went unnoticed by her dull, tired stare and the sight of Meph’s outstretched hand caused her features to furrow with confusion. Aella lazily smacked his hand like one would for a low five. “I don’t have anything.” She informed him and turned back to the bookshelf to continue her search by lifting each book up and peering behind it for anything unusual. Had he found out about the key hidden in her cleavage? Mephitis had been talking to her just now but it was fuzzy. Her dizzy spell had blurred out the words enough that she remembered him speaking, but his voice sounded like it was underwater- the words too distorted to understand.

“What about you, found anything?” And then jut like that, the book she tugged on didn’t actually lift up. It tilted forward and a crank caused a painting on a wall perpendicular to them to swing open. Jackpot. Aella side eyed Meph as she started for the safe, wary of him and their little competition for secrets, taking note for the first time that he was no longer partially transformed. When did that happen?
