Danzik was one of those fortunate sorts who didn't have to live off of the beach, but she'd stood on her ledge and watched as the rains washed through the Weyr and left....most everything a mess, honestly. She'd sipped her klah and watched the skies.

There was work to be done.

-----

It was still a bit of a drizzle out, but rain didn't prevent the responsibilities that dragonriders had with drills, ferrying non-riders, and several people had been sent off to help the holds with some more disastrous side effects from the downpour. Flooding was more than just water damage, though. It was the inconvenience of balancing the day to day grind with it. It was the rising tide bringing in scum from the ocean and then being so rude as to leave it.

The beach as a mess, weyrs were wetter than any rider needed to deal with at the end of a day, and most of their non-riders had other tasks that were just as crucial. So Danzik had rounded up all the Candidates, made sure each had their coats on, and out into the drizzle they'd gone.

We know it is still wet, so we'll do this a bit at a time, alright? It really is a lot of help, Eosphoth spoke gently to the candidates, her mental voice sweet and doting as she tried to smooth over any displeasure that she may have been able to sense from the group.

The beach itself was covered in debris and stranded sealife and Danzik shook her head, placing it on her hips.

"Alright, we have two big tasks we're gonna start with," Danzik explained, holding her arm up high with two fingers held for emphasis. "One; clear the shoreline! Toss any critters back into the ocean, it's better for them and it'll help keep the beach from stinking if they die and rot." A delightful mental image, "branches and rocks can be used for our second task."

Second task!

"SECONDLY we want to make small barricades around these weyrs that are closer to the shore as we can to to divert water from their front doors as the rains come up." There would still be flooding, of course, but.... I'll be helping everybody with the second task as needed, so don't hesitate to call on me! Eosphoth informed the candidates, in case that sounded particularly daunting.

----

Danzik laid out her expectations for each task. The first part of the morning would be dedicated to sorting beach debris and clearing what could be for Task One. Task Two would, with Eosphoth's assistance, work on digging out smaller trenches to supply sand and help guide water. The sand would be, ideally, combined with larger and sturdier beach debris along with what old (empty) sandbags from previous storms of similar caliber had been rounded up.

"If we can get this all done today, I'll see about the day off tomorrow." Maybe even a day somewhere brighter and warmer.

Pick a grid and roll from it 3 times per character - don't flip-flop between grids unless your roll deems you should! Feel free to switch up the flavor text a little to suit your character's IC actions, of course, but do write something to go with each roll!

Clear the Beach

1 - You're pretty sure this fish is dead. Are you sure you want to touch it with your hands? What else is around to do anything with? Whether you toss it back into the water or not it has to be moved, though.
2 - You take a few minutes to toss smaller rocks into the water one by one until you catch Danzik giving you a critical look for burning time. Whoops!
3 - What counts as big enough to go into the pile for the barricades and what needs to be thrown away? You can ask what Danzik thinks, but sometimes it just is easier to toss something into one of the piles and make it somebody else's problem.....
4 - Woah! Look at you flex! There's a larger piece of driftwood sticking out of the sand which ends up being bigger than it looked when you yank it out. Sure, it's light, but the sand doesn't give it up easily!
5 - You distractedly think you hear some peeping and cheeping of a firelizard. There are a few buzzing about farther down the beach - what are they making all the fuss about?
      Roll 1d4
      1. Looks like they're making a field day of all the fish! Delicious!
2-3. Danzik catches you wandering and has Eosphoth summon you back.
      4. Hello? What do we have here? Looks like there's the top of an egg sticking out of the sand. You can choose to take it or not - but mama lizard doesn't simply relinquish it and you do get a few scratches for the effort. [Quote Pach - you can only roll this once per player!]

6 - Working hard! The beach is already looking a bit better so take pride in your hard work!
7 - You get a nasty splinter and after Danzik looks it over and cleans it up, she recommends you spend some time helping with the barricades to keep from getting another [SWITCH GRIDS]
8 - You briefly (or not so briefly) consider using a particularly sturdy piece of debris as a makeshift sword. Alternatively, someone else challenges you to a duel with their own piece! Danzik allows it for a few minutes before suggesting the pieces would help the second group more.
9 - You've moved a lot of debris and take a small breather!
10 - A (flopping) fish in one hand, a stick in the other - you meant to throw the fish back, but there went that perfectly good stick. Whoops.

Build a Barricade

1 - Digging is hard when you are a small person and not the big (by comparison) green dragon scooping up sand with a foot. Maybe you can sneak in a break since she seems to have it under control. Or not! Up to you!
2 - Look at all this sand, and so many sand bags to fill! Eosphoth is keeping you hard at work but sends you a wave of encouragement and support. Look at you! You're doing a great job!
3 - You figure out a pretty easy way to arrange the sticks and rocks people from group 1 have been gathering together that makes the barricade building a little easier! Woohoo!
4 - You feel like you'd like a particular piece to help your building along but nobody has one yet. Rather than wait, you go on the hunt yourself [SWITCH GRIDS]
5 - Sandbags are heavy and you nearly drop one on your foot. Eosphoth fusses over you appropriately, but then sends you back to work. Careful!
6 - This sandbag has a hole in it. You let Eosphoth know, but hopefully this doesn't leave everybody short later. It already feels like there aren't a whole lot of them.....
7 - You dig too close to the wallow of a resting dragon and they turn a baleful look upon you. Do they let it go or do you call on Eosphoth and Danzik to mediate a little bit. Or maybe it ends up being no big thing and they are simply curious.
8 - Oh! You found a thing while moving around all of this sand!
      Roll 1d4
1-3. Shardit! Just a pretty rock. Maybe you can keep that or use it for this chore, though.
      4. The rain must have buried this firelizard egg! Mom won't find it here, so you may as well take it, right? [Quote Pach - you can only roll this once per player!]

9 - You're everything is hurting, so sore. Sore sore sore. And there is still so much sand to move. And everything is soaked. Klah would be nice right about now. Try to not get sick!
10 - Oh man, someone from the clean-up gang is fake swordfighting and it sure looks awfully fun. Maybe you can get away with it for a minute between getting all these larger branches set up....

It was cold. And wet. Serrekhar grumbled to himself low in his throat, trying not to shiver as the rain soaked into his clothes. Still, he wasn't dumb enough to complain when Danzik was still in earshot, and he grimaced as he looked over the beach. What a mess. He forced himself to pay attention as the Candidatemaster herself began to speak. Cleaning up the beach and making barricades for the weyrs. He didn't envy the poor dragons having to deal with the run--and soggy wallows. As soon as a day off was mentioned, the big man brightened considerably.

Right. Beach cleaning, he decided, might be more interesting. Nudging Josen with an elbow, Serrekhar headed down to begin. A nice, big piece of driftwood caught his eye, and he reached out to snatch it. He immediately yelped as a jagged edge he hadn't seen bit deep into the meat of his palm. Yanking his hand back and eyeballing it confirmed his suspicions. That.... was one nasty splinter.

Aware of Danzik's eyes on him, Serrekhar debated doing the manly thing and shouldering on.... and then thought about his hand falling off from infection and decided better safe than sorry. He stood there sheepishly as he was doctored up, shoulders hunched as he was (gently) banished from beach duty to instead help with the barricades.

Josen's brows raised slightly as Serrekhar took the splinter and the entire time the bigger boy was having it looked over grinned a smug s**t-eating grin at the back of his head - "Better get that kissed better, buddy" - before he turned his attention back to the debris that littered the beach. Hmmm.

Josen's brow knitted as he picked up a rather middling piece of wood, then another, smaller piece which obviously needed to be cleared out. Was this bigger piece big enough to be useful or did it need to be thrown out too? Where was this all even going to end up, anyways? Josen tossed the middling piece into the barricade pile, then the smaller one out into the water.

The tide brought it back anyways.

Candidate Omurntas

The candidate was no stranger to working in bad weather. Young plants had to be protected from bad weather. It was no surprise when they were called out to help with the flooding in the weyrs along the beach and cleaning up the debris that washed ashore. Omurntas flung his oiled cape around his shoulders and with an eager trio of blue firelizards headed out into the rain.

He put his back into it and focused on some of the larger pieces, leaving the smaller stuff for those who were younger or smaller. The blues helped by digging edges and branches stuck in the sand free so he could move it. So focused upon his task, he lost track of the rain and those moving around him. After awhile he paused and wiped his brow. Sweat? Rain? Both probably. He eyed the pile he'd managed to move and congratulated his blues on their hard work too.

You're lucky he didn't see that, Josen.... but Serrekhar already knew he'd be hearing about it forever. Whatever! Danzik wouldn't have taken the time to clean it out if it hadn't needed it!

He wasn't nearly as effective as Eosphoth at digging, but he was doing his best! In fact, he was so focused on digging that he didn't realize he'd gotten too close to where someone was resting. As a large green head suddenly turned to look at him--well, he nearly yelped again. Swallowing his shout, Serrekhar immediately held his hands up, backing away. "Sorry. Sorry. Didn't uh--sorry!"

Hoo boy, he was sweating. Luckily, the green didn't seem inclined to do much more than watch, and he'd be sure to give her a respectful berth.

Well Serrekhar wasn't around to do all the manly heavy lifting anymore, so Josen figured he'd try his hand at a larger piece of wood that was sticking out of the sand. It didn't budge.

"Oi, move," he grumbled at it, leaning his weight into the pull. This time it gave, sending him tumbling onto his butt and sending sand all over. He sat for a moment, then flexed an arm proudly. Hmph! Now he just needed to drag this over to the pile.

Candidate Omurntas

After a short rest, he got back to work. Stuck under a pile of branches was a flopping fish. Skull drew his attention to it. Omurntas pulled a branch out of the way and grabbed the fish. He headed over to the water intending to toss the fish back out to sea.

Instead he realized too late that it was the branch that went sailing through the air. With a sigh he shrugged and tossed the fish to his blues. At least they would be well fed!

Candidate Omurntas

With so many hands, things were moving quite smoothly despite the tide and rain helping. The branches came in so many different shapes and sizes. It was almost by chance Omurn pulled one that happened to be quite smooth and mostly straight. Hefting it, he noted it seemed almost like a sword.

Hey! This was a nice stick!

Josen swished it from side to side, grinning like a kid who had just found a new toy before noticing he wasn't the only person who had a rather nice hitting-stick. Unfaltering, he half-waved his stick at Omurntas in challenge.

"Shall we?"

Danzik could get after them for it later.

Huh.... This wasn't too terrible. After his close encounter, he'd decided to stick a bit closer to where people were actively depositing supplies. Carefully, he began to sort them in a way that he thought might make building the actual barricade a bit easier... Sure enough, he found the actual construction to not be nearly as tricky as he thought! "Huh." He muttered, feeling a little pleased with himself.

Well, up until he realized Josen was about to have a sword fight with someone. Man... It made barricade building feel a lot less fun!

Brenley hadn't grown up around other children. He had been taught to run from bandits rather than fight them, so when he picked up the perfect stick-sword he had no reaction to it beyond looking for a spot to move it. Not until he saw Josen brandish his at Omurntas. Even then, his reaction was more 'someone's going to lose an eye' than 'slicety slice'.

He approached his fellows anyway, tapping the damp stick against his leg.

Candidate Omurntas

Just as he was thinking that, another candidate nearby held aloft his own nice stick. Omurn saw the challenge in Josen and grinned back. He was game! "A few minutes couldn't hurt. Watch your step!" The young man took up a stance and offered a few gentle hits that could be easily parried or dodged.

As he moved and circled, he spotted another with a fair stick. Omurn turned slightly toward Bren, giving them an opportunity to get a few hits in too should they desire to join in.

Josen aimed more to hit the stick Omurntas was holding, rather than the man himself, grinning. "Just a few - gotta check some stick fidelity before they go making anything of them!" Josen justified as though it was the perfectly logical thing to do in this instance.

"That's a good fightin' stick you found!" Josen noted of Brenley's stick, holding his own out to let him get a few thwacks of his own stick against. They may as well milk it as long as they could!

"Thank you," Bren replied, raising his stick and tapping it against Omurn's. He crouched a little, lightly smacking Josen's stick as well before taking a defensive stance. Stick fidelity. Yes.
