Vanish was retired. That's not how he'd phrase it, no, he couldn't retire - what sort of asinine idea was that? He had work to do! But...his hips did ache and his bite wasn't nearly the death grip it used to be...No! These pups needed instruction. He had become their teacher, passing the torch as it were; it was a change in lifestyle he hadn't known how he'd adjust to when he finally admitted he needed a career change but he seemed to be making the slower pace work. He genuinely enjoyed his time instructing the youngsters. They often surprised him and their spark for life was easy to assimilate and connect to, like being lit in the warm glow of a fire you were just sitting in proximity to. Maybe he couldn't Spirit hunt as he had in his youth but he wasn't incapable. It was important to him that they saw that.

He looked over his opponent, much much younger than he was. Fierce. But he had experience, that had to count for something. Prolonging this would open himself up to a charge he wasn't sure -given her size- he'd be able to recover from. So instead, he dug his paws into the ground and launched off at her.

Who was in charge of arranging pairs? Who thought it would amusing to pair Rip, strongest of the strongest wolf here, with this aging creature? She had come under Glory's banner looking for a fight, not a gimme. And so when Vanishing Lichen leapt forward, she met it with bared teeth, angry at his seeming lack of strength, angry at this waste of her time, and, well, simply for anger's sake. She hoped her brother wasn't watching; she didn't want to imagine what lackluster insults would spawn from this encounter.

"I am no whelp to go soft on," she growl in a low voice, pushing the male away. A teacher was an important position to be sure, but the only lesson needed here was to put him in his place when it came to fighting. "Attack me as if I were a Spirit or not at all, old man!"

She brushed off his attack with seemingly no effort, a perfectly executed block. He would be impressed, proud even, if he had the time to think. Was that on him, had he made it too easy on her? That hadn't been intentional but, well, if anything the tournament was an excellent way for him to evaluate some things. Maybe he was going soft?

Her words riled him. But the execution of her own next attack was...interesting. Had she meant to do that? Lure him into a misstep? A false sense of security? Whatever the case, waiting wasn't an option and so he responded in kind.

Better. Vanish's retort almost would had thrown her off her paws had she not been watching him like a hawk. It still hurt, however, and she went with the momentum momentarily, ears pinned back but eyes bright with a hint of satisfaction.

Bring them up, and then push them down. With a snarl, Rip rushed in.

With a ferocity he hadn't tapped into for far far too long, Vanish attacked, the success and strength of it reminding him there was still wild life deep within those old bones of his. It was exhilarating! He smirked. Rip took his onslaught commendably as he anticipated she would and returned in kind but he was ready for the younger wolf and managed to avoid any damage. Vanish wasn't about to let up on his momentum and made for an attack once more.

Now that the fight was beginning in earnest, Rip could start to enjoy it. Well, in the way Rip enjoyed anything at least: by making sure she came out on top. Whether it was because she wanted no-one associating her rank of Historian as weaker or a byproduct of her upbringing by a perfectionist mother, she was fierce in everything she did. So when Vanish left himself open, she tried to take advantage with savage glee.

He had left himself open and he corrected himself just a slit-second too late. He managed to absorb the attack well enough, pulling away long enough to face his opponent, still showing off that grin. It wasn't condescending; in fact it seemed to have very little to do with Rip whatsoever, Vanish just seemed to be thoroughly engaged in the duel.

"Finally a proper spare, huh?" he said, perhaps far more enthusiastically than Rip's serious demeanor. He didn't give her the chance to respond and lunged again.
