Creatures of Irithyll
Ethereals: Protectors, predators. A mixed relationship with this creature. They tend to only interact with those who have bonded with one of the herd. (See below for Kells Ambassadors.)
Jackalopes: The herd is indifferent to these creatures. These creatures may come and go from around the herd. It's possible that they even become familiar with a couple of them from time to time.
Wisps: Deadly. (Just kidding.) Although rumor has it a wingless peryton or two have fallen off Onyx Ridge following a tricky wisp. Truly the herd is indifferent to this creature though.
Mating
Mating is common among Peryton. This is nothing new, and is not changed in the Aldularian. They believe, like the rest of its kind, that mating is how it should be. Genetics have a lot to do with that decision.
Q: When one Peryton wants to mate with another, is there a ceremony? A: Yes, nothing spectacular and typically includes the direct family members and herd elders/council. If this union unites two separate groups then the elders and council of both groups would attend. Others aren't encouraged or discouraged about participating, it just isn't necessary.
OOC: Owners are required to post a form declaring that a pair is mated. This is akin to a lifemate agreement (but is not the official Kells form). This is just to recognize the pair easily in the herd. FYI: Not posting this form does not cause any issues or delay any breedings etc. It's more or less for plot reasons. :3
Q: What does mating mean for those who decide to do this? A: The union between these two means that they are strictly bound to one another. Breeding with another would bring the pair shame. Nothing OOCly would happen, but ICly the character that wasn't faithful would experiencing a degree of shunning, same with the individual that had participated in the act. The reason being is that both knew full well there was a union.
Q: Can a union be broken? A: This is not common, but can happen for a few different reasons.Things happen in a union and unfortunately those things may end up separating the two characters. There is no shame in admitting this.
OOC: This is true for both IC and OOC, you may split pairs up at any time for any reason. s**t happens!
Breeding
This is a tremendously big moment for both parents and herd alike. The herd will support the expecting or new parents anyway they can - including food/shelter and physical protection. When the foals are born they will be weak, and unable to wander far. This means the herd is bound to one area, for this reason they tend to encourage breeding in and around the same time frames (of course that doesn't always work OOCly). They bide by a safety in numbers rule.
Q: When new foals are born, is there a celebration? A: At the risk of exposing the foals to the outer world there is no ceremony held at the birth of the foals. This gives both the foals a fighting chance (even if Irithyll doesn't haven't many monsters to threaten them) and the parents a chance at much deserved rest. The ceremony is quaint and often just an introduction of the foal to their immediate family, elders, and the council. Others may participate as they want too.
Q: What happens if there is danger? A: The herd is expected to lend a hoof in protecting the new family. If the herd is traveling any expecting mothers/foals would be in the center of them. Less chance of them wandering off/being injured.
Illness/Death
Nothing escapes death, Peryton are no different. Their goal, a life goal, is to achieve elder status within their ever expanding herd. This status means gaining their own little clan, space to roam, and recognition by the primary elder and the herds council. Two separate ceremonies may be held depending on what happened and their status before death:
Option A: Achieved Elder Status
If the Peryton achieved elder status then they are given a tremendous ceremony. Celebrating the fact that another of their elders joins those in the watching above. Their belief is that every elder gained by the after life will watch over the herd and bless them. Though they grieve a physical loss, they appreciate their new protector.
Option B: Did Not Achieve Elder Status
These Peryton who pass before their status is achieved is not seen as lesser. Instead the herd rallies together to prepare the Peryton for continuing their goal in the after life. This means presenting and preparing rations, trinkets, and a pair of antlers. The antlers from an elder is preferred as they believe that elder may help this Peryton achieve their status.
