Caladhiel walked through her garden, reveling in the beauty of the flowers and the freshness of the late spring air. The days were getting longer and warmer, and it seemed that all the earth was at last in full bloom, a hot and heady summer coming fast on the heels of the especially harsh winter. She paused to gently nudge a stargazer lily, its bud bright and on the verge of opening. Soon it would unfurl its petals and release its sweet, intoxicating fragrance, unparalleled by any hand- or hoof-made perfume the Kawani lands could offer. In just a couple of moon cycles, the balmy days and spring showers would give way to scorching lazy days, hot summer nights, and lightning bugs. Already the equinox was past and the summer solstice was fast approaching. She would need to begin preparations soon.

But most importantly, her lover would be home soon from his travels. After all, he had promised to return before the solstice.

Caladhiel's heart fluttered in her chest. They had known each other for some time, and she was no stranger to love or lovers. But with him, it was different. She felt like a fresh young filly, in love for the first time, whenever she thought of or laid eyes on him. A part of her was afraid that she was being foolish, head over heels in infatuation, obsession, a fleeting blaze of passion that would die or leave her with a broken heart like her poor friend. Her mother had always warned her to beware of stallions (and mares, and others), especially if they spoke sweet words to her ears, but her mother was cold and cautious to a fault, in a loveless mating in pursuit of power and resources, not love. How could she follow her cold advice?

Caladhiel lifted her neck, shaking her head and inhaling the fresh, sweet air deeply; there was no use dwelling on things she could not change and no use in trying to change people who did not want to change. She focused on the gentle breeze, the soothing hum of the honeybees, the uplifting chirp of the spring birds and their young ones, the earth full of life and vigor. Oh, how lovely it was; if only the Kawani could be like this year round!

She closed her eyes, smiling, and trying to recall the lines of her lover's face from memory. He had wild eyes, like a wolf or fox, glowing yellow, and a strong jaw with vulpine teeth unlike her own. His jaw was sharp and his voice was strong and commanding, assured, kingly even, with words sweeter than honey. Caladhiel felt a pang of pain in her heart. Oh, how she missed him terribly! She would give anything for an image of his face, untainted by her poor blurred memories.

Caladhiel closed her eyes, walking slowly out of the partial shade of the trees above and allowing the sunlight to shine against her eyelids, warming her body while the gentle breeze caressed her. She didn't need her eyes open to see where she was going; in front of her was an open field, a meadow filled with all kinds of fragrant wildflowers, and while she walked into the light, relishing the spring warmth, in her mind she continued trying to reconstruct her lover's face from memory.

His name was Faolchú, but she often called him by his nickname Faolán. She had yet to meet his family, but he had told her of his siblings and parents, and the political struggles back home. Faolchú's father was a powerful and massive nine-tailed fox, greatly admired by Faolchú, but unlike her own father he was very distant from his family both emotionally and in terms of proximity, directing all his efforts to managing the kingdom. Faolchú's mother was angelic but delicate and frail, poorly suited to court life and political intrigue, and he frequently worried about her well being. Caladhiel had learned of the concubines vying for his mother's position, of attacks on the palace, and of Faolchú's own concerns with the instability of palace life; Faolchú had told her that he had been very sheltered while growing up -- indeed, his elders still attempted to shelter him -- to the point where, even now as an adult, he sometimes still felt like a naive foal and had yet to find his place in the world. Caladhiel had assured him that he would always find respite in her homeland.

Many things about Caladhiel's home had shocked Faolchú. Unlike Caladhiel, he was raised in cooler, less fertile lands; upon seeing her home for the first time he was amazed at its abundance and thriving vegetation, ablaze with brilliant colors. Caladhiel smiled, once again recalling their first meeting, and she thought back to how they had exchanged parts of their lives as keepsakes, an unspoken promise for the future. Faolchú had been injured upon their first meeting, and the crown he had worn on his head, a sign of his birth and bloodline, had gotten lost in the struggle. He had stayed with her while the moon went through its phases, recovering in secret from her family and the rest of the world. He had trusted her, and Caladhiel tended to his wounds and brought him food. Covertly, they had seen each other every day, slowly revealing their deepest wishes and desires, growing closer as each learned about the other. Upon their parting, Faolchú had thanked her for allowing him to stay by her side in her paradise, and Caladhiel had given him a twisting vine circlet in silver, made in the style of her homeland but matched to his armor and family crest.

Caladhiel smiled, thinking of how he had bent his neck down for her, like a knight, so that she could place the gleaming silver circlet upon his equally shining silvery white hair. Of course, he hadn't looked like that at their first meeting. In fact, she'd been terrified of him, of his feral appearance with a matted coat and tangled hair. Caladhiel snorted to herself, holding back a private grin at the memory. Faolchu had looked like some wild and untamed beast, and if he had been wearing his wolf headdress at the time she would certainly have mistaken him for a skinchanger as she focused her eyes on his clawed paws, unusual tail, and most of all the bright fresh blood -- his own, not that she had a good enough sense of smell to tell -- and bite wounds. In truth, he was the one being hunted and not the hunter. Not in that encounter, anyway.

She thought back to that moment they shared together, reminiscing in contentment. Faolchu had looked up at her though his bangs as she had placed that circlet, wolfish golden eyes emitting a subtle glow. They had a strange quality, shining like the eyes of some carnivorous beast in the darkness, but by that point she was no longer afraid of him or his unusual traits. They had spent their free time together, her slipping away from her family and him healing in a hidden part of the woods. Caladhiel had figured her father wouldn't approve of some wild mutant stallion unintentionally entering into their family herd lands, and she had never had much contact with stallions in the first place. Faolchu's injuries were not fatal, but they had been serious enough to drain him of his energy that first day and incapacitate him with fever shortly after. He had been too beaten to travel the rest of the way to her father's and mother's ancestral home.

She hadn't the heart to be truthful to her parents. Her father had turned away those in need before -- to him, his family's safety was all that mattered, refugees of war be damned, and she had no doubt he would take a single look at Faolchu and deem him to be trouble. So she and Faolchu shared this accidental secret, and she snuck away from her family and her duties at every opportunity in order to bring him fresh food and bandages. In the mean time, her friends -- the local woodland familiars -- kept an eye on Faolchu in her absence and brought him potable water, lending their paws to help Faolchu where she could not.

They had passed the time together in whispers, sharing secrets and stories. It was thanks to Faolchu that Caladhiel realized exactly how big the world could be.
