Ranks

The Commanding Family
Nothing here yet!

    King:
The leader of the pack – his word is law, and he has the final say in all matters.

    Heir: ♦♦♦♦
The King’s chosen successor, typically the first-born son.

    Queen: ♦♦♦♦
The King's chosen mate, who may have been of any rank previously.

The King's Council
The council is comprised of three individuals: General, Spymaster, and Oracle. Each has been selected for their outstanding merits and notoriety, while being amongst the most loyal of the Moongate followers. Unlike their charges, however, that loyalty starts with their King before trickling out across the pack. They are expected to report all findings and matters (regarding pack and territory) to the King, and are responsible for ‘branches’ relative to their duties. If any low-ranking followers fall out of line, reprimand begins and ends with the council.

    General: ♦♦♦♦
    TBD

    Spymaster: ♦♦♦♦
    TBD

    Oracle: ♦♦♦♦
    TBD

The Army
A permanent military faction led by the General.

    Captain: ♦♦♦
    TBD

    Warrior: ♦♦
Training never ends for a warrior of the Moongate. Frequent bouts of sparring and wrestling help keep these individuals optimized, with lean bodies, quick reflexes, and sharp minds all ready and rearing for battle. These are the quintessential soldiers of the army, rough and rowdy and not to be trifled with.

    Sentinel: ♦♦
Known for their imposing forms and intimidating presence, Sentinels excel in defensive combat and logistical tactics - they can redirect the attention of aggressors and withstand many fierce blows, allowing others a chance to regroup while waiting for the opportune moment to strike back. They often serve areas or wolves of great importance, even taking permanent positions as private guards. On occasion, Sentinels are called as escorts for supply transportation or as bodyguards during outside excursions.

    Hunter:
These wolves provide food for the pack – a dangerous job, considering the hostile climate and terrain.

    Guard:
Hardy and observant, guards are utilized within the pack for the purposes of protection and law enforcement. These wolves are responsible for maintaining the general order of the pack, often acting as a security detail for other ranks during their day-to-day tasks, or as sentries at gates or boundaries. In battle, they use their defensive training to protect others and stall would-be attackers.

The Gatekeepers
Nothing here yet!

    Warden: ♦♦♦
    TBD

    Ranger: ♦♦
Rangers are few and seldom seen, as they are on the strictest of rotations, traversing tirelessly between posts set at the four cardinal directions. They read nature’s signs with finely honed senses and vast knowledge of flora and fauna - with their great skill in tracking, they monitor the behaviors of the mountains’ creatures, such as herd livelihood and migrations, and assess the health of the surrounding forests and water sources. The journey to becoming a ranger is arguably one of the most challenging, for individuals must be capable of enduring all the trials of their training every single night; sometimes all at once.

    Denkeeper: ♦♦
    TBD

    Scout:
Trained to be stealthy, fleet-footed, and keen of senses, these wolves keep an eye on the pack's borders, regularly patrolling the lower peaks, ridges, and treeline for signs of intruders or other dangers, such as thin ice or especially deep snowdrifts on well-walked paths. They also act as messengers; if the call is raised from one gate, a scout will quickly alert the others with their own call until the whole of the Moongate is aware.

    Gatherer:
The busybodies and artisans of the pack, these wolves are expected to gather resources, maintain food stores, and transport them up and down the mountain. Some among them are artisans, crafting decorations and apparel from bones, pelts, feathers, flowers, and mosses.

The Moon's Grace
The Oracle's charges are considered 'blessed by the Moon', and act as the chroniclers of lore, the conveyors of the Moon's wisdom, and the guardians of the pack's morale. They recount the pack's history through performance, and from time to time will shape it, too… for if they choose not to frame the kings and their high courts in a divine light, they may suffer a fate far worse than death.

    Moontalker: ♦♦♦
Primary keepers of the waning pools and avid practitioners of the occult arts, dabbling in the sciences of astrology, alchemy, and natural magics (rudimentary fortune telling). They are expected to be versatile, both as healers and interpreters. They also serve as the Oracle’s right hand, and are the only rank permitted to aid in rituals of divination and judgements.

    Healer: ♦♦
Dedicated to the health and wellness of the general public, they are far less mobile than their medic counterparts and generally perform ‘house calls’ on a regular basis. They rarely devote themselves to a healing specialty, instead training to interpret and remedy all forms of injury. Due to their frequent (and invasive) study of anatomy, healers are considered the most knowledgeable of the bodily form. They are thusly responsible for cleansing and performing burial preparations for fallen members, as well as removing physical tokens from the corpses of their enemies.

    Loreteller: ♦♦
Loretellers are particularly knowledgeable, capable of memorizing many a tale worth telling, and must be equally as innovative in order to keep the populace entertained as much as they are informed. They are expected to organize many common rituals and ceremonies, and work closely with Moontalkers to document events and judgements in the proper light.

    Medic:
Wolves that tend to the wounded and ill, most commonly for minor ailments and injuries during training or on the battle field. They may also assist in pup-rearing before The Upbringing.

    Chanter:
From old wive's tales to vivid accounts of war, they are the weavers of dreams, the dancers and singers of the Moongate. Chanters practice and perform an array of ancestral arts to the influence the mood of the pack. Some lend their blessed voices in ballads, prose, war cries, and mantras. Some bend primitive musical instruments to their will to provide uplifting tones during festivals, or decoys and distractions. Still others display great acrobatic skill and dance hypnotically in the moonlight, or menacingly to invoke fear into the hearts of their enemies.

The Others
Low ranked members who are unable to fully participate in the pack due to age or lack of expertise.

    Elder: ♦
Elders are highly respected wolves that have grown too old to participate in the glory of battle. These veterans are occasionally called forward to provide counsel on matters, as they are considered among the most experienced and wise members of the pack. Other tasks may include teaching during The Upbringing, assisting Denkeepers, and pup-sitting.

    Recruit: ♢
Rogues and pups must begin their journey of ascension here, as the Moongate recruits. Through trials and trainings, they are stripped of their egos and broken of old habits, forced to embody a version of wolf that caters to the Moongate’s needs. Spending their days high up the mountain in seclusion from the rest of the pack, they are expected to bond deeply with their fellow trainees, learn the culture and tradition of the pack and its followers, and survive. Although the methods of indoctrination are brutal, they are also just as rewarding.

    Yearling: ♢
Pups that have come to their first season are called Yearlings. At this time, they will be old enough to participate in the Upbringing. Additionally, pups that are of an unacceptable color or temperament will be allowed to stay in the pack until they are a Yearling, at which point they will be exiled.

    Youth: ♢
Pups that are yet too young to participate in The Upbringing are referred to as Youths. During their waking hours, they are taught the rules and history of the Moongate, and learn various basic survival tactics through play.

    Dweller: ♢
Other species seeking protection may trade their freedom for a life of servitude to the Moongate. Those who take this opportunity are called ‘Dwellers’, and are allowed to live amongst the wolves in The Valley, often as assistants to other ranks. Though relatively safe, the life of a Dweller can be challenging: it is common to suffer whispered insults or ignored violence in passing, and they are expected to perform the lowliest of tasks without complaint. During times of war, they are called upon to bolster the fighting ranks or provide other aid as needed.
