Weyrlings! Report to the Bowl for your morning lesson, along with your riding straps and leathers. Tagtarth reached out to all of the weyrlings from both Fianth and Rhianth's latest clutches. The Assistant Weyrlingmaster had been assigned to lead this lesson, though rumor had it V'mel and L'shir might also make an appearance.

The weyrlings had been asked to come to the Bowl many times the past sevenday; sometimes it was to check their riding straps, other times it was to practice mounting their dragons, as well as learning how to dismount. There was no reason for them to suspect anything was amiss this day, except for the fact that V'res wanted both sets of weyrlings on hand.

The broad-shouldered man stood next to his brown dragon, arms crossed, waiting. Still, a half-smile was on his ugly mug when the weyrlings began to assemble. The usually serious man knew that today would be a big day for the weyrlings, and as more and more showed up, anticipation and excitement began to spread. Still, he waited until every last weyrling had arrived, before he broke the news.

"Today, you will finally get to take your first flight with your dragons. Today will mark the beginning of newfound freedom, as you get to experience the joy of flight with your beloveds. Today, everything will change." He let the weight of his words sink in for it was true--after this day, the weyrlings lessons would focus more on flight, with Between lessons to follow. Up until now, the danger and risk for weyrlings was relatively minor. After today, the lessons would get more difficult. Flight could lead to broken bones or injuries if the dragon lost control; Between lessons would follow, which was always a risk, even for an adult rider. And then, near the end of their training, there would be Threadfall. But today... Today was not about what might come. Today was a day where the weyrlings could finally earn the right to become a true dragonrider.

"You'll be flying up to where Tagtarth and I are waiting, will do little gliding number, and then will land down by Nizoanth. We'll go through this one-by-one." He glanced down at his list and gave a small grunt. "Enjoy this moment. You've earned it. You deserve it. Now tighten those straps, mount up, and wait for your turn. "

How To Play

Welcome to the Disney Song Clutch & Harry Potter Clutch's first pair flight! While we mention that V'res & Tagtarth will have the riders go through one-by-one, we are going to open this so y'all can kind of roll immediately. The clutch is too big, and I want to keep it open for players to be able to roll to see how they do during their first pair flight!

This initial flight won't be long, but it's V'res' duty to make sure that each pair can 1. actually make it off the ground
2. actually manage to gain altitude, hover, and glide
3. manage to land
4. ensure that rider or dragon doesn't panic or worry.

Technically speaking, he would likely start with the golds, then bronzes, browns, blues, greens, and end with the whites. That said, y'all can actually just roll in any given order.

Because Uta is a sucker for chance you will need to roll from the grid to see how your first flight happens to be! The dragons have, thus far, been strengthening their wing muscles and learning to fly and land solo. But it is different carrying weight--especially for the smaller colors--and even the golds, bronzes, and large browns might still find themselves in a pickle. The baby dragons are also still learning to fly, so it's not like they're champion or naturally great at it. Just because they have the instinct to know how to fly doesn't mean they might not panic or find themselves in a situation they haven't been in before i.e. a strong gust of wind, an unexpected thermal or downdraft, etc.

We'll also try to keep in the mind characters! So re-read your profiles because it's possible there might be something in there that could affect your roll! Otherwise, the rest is up to you guys to fill in or decide.

Remember, each dragon is going one-by-one so you won't be running into each other. They could possibly run into some of the weyrlingmaster's and assistants that are hovering to watch, but it's not going to be one big mess. The weyrlings will be watching/cheering on. Also, the space between where they take over, where they hover/glide, is pretty long. The flight isn't necessarily going to be long, but long enough so the pair can enjoy that freedom, even for just a few moments.

Have fun!

The First Flight Grid

Roll a d100 to see how you do!
Please note: You can kind of personalize the prompts provided the end result is the same. i.e. if they had a hard landing, maybe it came from pride instead of fear. Or if they decide to show off that's what takes them too high instead of a thermal, etc. Just make sure the consequences/end result is if you need to adjust for your dragon's personality. :3

1. You don't actually manage to take off the first time. You're not sure if your thoughts of excitement distracted your dragon, or if you were nervous about heights, or what... but your dragon misses his or her take off. How... embarrassing. They may have even flapped a bit, but perhaps its the pressure of all the eyes on them, or they just weren't accustomed to having a rider upon them.

Re-roll and try again--but V'res has noted this.

2-10. You manage to take off, though your dragon seems to scrape his or her wings against the ground a bit, and seems to struggle to gain altitude quickly. Thankfully, they make up for it, seemingly no-worse for wear. If they're a brown, bronze, or gold, they'll need to flap extra hard to make up for it, and possibly by-pass V'res, whoops. Whites, greens, and blues will over-compensate and shoot up a little too high, too quickly, oops.

11-20. Your take off was beautiful, and you make it up to where V'res is hovering with Tagtarth. If your dragon is known to be a proud sort, or showy, they wind up purposefully flying higher than they should, and then wind up getting buffeted a bit by a gust of wind. Whoops! This could mean they're going to take a harder landing if they don't recover. Roll a D4. Odds they recover and can land semi-okay. Even means they don't, and take a hard, botched landing. Whoops.

If your dragon is known to be anxious or nervous, they seem to find themselves getting flustered as they pass V'res. In fact, they get so flustered that when a sudden wind gust blows, they wind up flying right into the brown, who needs to dart well out of the way. Whoops! This could well effect their landing. Roll a D4. Odds are they manage to at least land semi-okay. Even means they take a harder, more botched landing.

If your dragon is neither showy/proud/flashy/confident =or= anxious/nervous/easily spooked., they wind up doing all right with no real stumbles. Good job!

21-30. Your take-off was a little shakey but you wind up high in the sky. You fly past V'res, do a nice glide, but your landing leaves much to be desired. If your dragon is bulky, fat, or overly-muscled, they land way too hard and potentially chip a nail, ouch. If they're lighter and more delicate, they wind up catching themselves, but do take a little bit of a tumble from the momentum, and might wind up running into some of the gathered crowd or fellow weyrlings. Look out!

31-34: You didn't realize this, but your dragon seems to be suddenly worried about landing. Your take off had been hard, but once they caught the wind, they were magnificent. But now that it's time to land, they either don't want to, or they just are suddenly having some Strong Feelings about landing and mucking it up, or hurting you, or whatever reason they might have for not wanting to land. Great. Everyone is watching, and waiting, and they might need some encouragement, or a kick-to-the-side to get them down. Roll a D6. Odds you manage to convince them down and they have a semi-decent (if not hard) landing. Evens and the Weyrlingmaster needs to intervene and encourage them to land. Whoops.

35-45. You do great! Honestly, this flight is everything you hoped. You made it up with ease, your glide was gorgeous, and you did an ace landing. You have every right to be proud! If your dragon's known to have an ego, they can boast and rightfully so. You know V'res put you down for high marks. If your dragon doesn't have an ego, they have every right to be ooh'd and ahh'd over for such a great performance. Even they'll feel good about what they did.

If your dragon is a metallic, you will get extra praise because really, that is how a dragon should be. Browns will get high compliments and marks. Blues a smile. Greens a grunt. Whites, well... You know in your heart you're a winner.

46-50. Your take off is pretty good, but you wind up flying way too low to the ground, and land way too early. Whoops. Maybe.... Maybe try that again.
Re-Roll! But know that V'res knows that that was pretty much akin to failure.

51-55. While you're in the air, a downdraft caches you off guard. If you're a white, green, or small blue, you'll need to fight to keep for control or get battered down into a crash landing. If you're a brown, bronze, or gold you're able to fight through it, but you wind up teeter-tottering a bit, throwing your rider against those riding leathers. Better hope you had them nice and tight otherwise your rider is in for a world of hurt!

56-60. Everything seemed to be going good until you needed to land. Then, you wind up over-shooting your mark. You fly right into your fellow weyrlings or (if it's early on) you wind up flying right into the small group gathered to watch. Your dragon tries to right themselves, but more likely drop/tumble. You and possibly some of those who had to bolt out of the way wind up a bit battered and bruised. Nice going, hot shot.

61-65. Perhaps it was just the way the wind blew, perhaps it was just bad timing, or one-too-many flappies. But while your dragon is up in the air, their wing suddenly gets a twinge. Oh-no. Not when you were just starting to fly! A sore muscle now means you might not get to keep flying. Do you tell the Weyrlingmaster and land to go to the healers? Or do you keep quiet about it for future lessons? Either way, you wind up landing a bit short of the mark, but it's up to you and your dragon if you confess why. [Note: Not telling/confessing there's a possible strained wing-muscle, for whatever reason, could result in future lesson catastrophe or an unexpected crash for plot/story purposes. It's just risky dragon-riding.]

66-76. You did fine! Nothing to write home about, but you at least got up there without injury!

77-80. Your take off was great but your dragon seems to have trouble controlling where he or she is going. A turn of their head and tail and suddenly instead of gliding straight, they wind up veering way off course. When your dragon tries to right him or herself, they just wind up even more off course, potentially into a group of bystanders. Whoops.

81-90. You take off, and everything seems fine... Until your dragon catches an updraft that pushes them a wee-bit higher than you intended. If your dragon is prone to panic or anxiousness, or might get upset about this, they might try to compensate by diving down, or folding their wings to drop some altitude. If they go in for a landing, it could be a bit of a crash. For dragons who are a bit more in control, they should be able to fly out of the thermal and come in for a semi-decent landing. Hope you're not afraid of heights!

91-99. What a rush! You were on fire! Maybe you showed off a little bit once you were actually in the air, but you did it! Everything went fine, and if the glide down was a little too steep, you hardly noticed it. Good job!

100. Catastrophe. Whatever happened, everything that could go wrong, did. Feel free to come up with this poor first flight. A day of triumph and you wind up humiliating and/or hurting yourself. One things' for certain: You are in so much trouble...

One thing to note, please know that this time around V'res and the Weyrlingmaster's did NOT check straps for tightness or quality. So if your rider made shitty straps, or rushed to put them on their dragon, then on their heads be it. ]

K'rou and bronze Cadereth

Awaiting his turn to fly, Cadereth had eyes only for the sky. There was a sense of power that came with being above the earth, and he already reveled in it when he flew alone, his strong wings beating the air into submission. Soon, he would bestow that power on his man, carrying K'rou to where he could look down upon others, and feel a higher calling pulling at his soft human heart in a way that the bronze's words could not. At least, that was his hope.

K'rou was not anxious in the least, as some other weyrlings were. He wasn't particularly antsy to get started either, though he did look forward to flying with Cadereth. Mostly, he'd wished their first time flying could have been truly solo, away from the prying eyes of others. The experience would be so much more poignant if his reaction could be unfettered. But he wasn't about to make a fool of himself in front of his peers. There would be plenty of opportunity for them to fly alone later.

As a bronze pair, they were one of the first to go up. K’rou checked their straps once more when they were waiting for the previous pair to come down… then it was time. Cadereth crouched on his muscular haunches for a moment, then burst upward as if released from a spring trap. K’rou had been readily braced against whiplash, but felt his stomach drop as they left the ground at a speed that felt almost dizzying, though the bronze was going no faster than anyone else his size. He flapped hard, rising nearly level with Tagtarth, but suddenly his rhythm faltered, one quick flap and two much longer flaps, before returning to its former cadence. K’rou felt the sharp twang of pain in that moment, and as the bronze shifted into a premature glide, he felt Cadereth’s burning rage mixing with the elation they shared as the wind rushed over their skin and hide, bearing them up above the world below.

Their landing was smooth, though the man felt the subtle, but drawn-out pangs Cadereth endured as he forced his wings to remain stable until the end. The bronze’s demeanor was no less haughty than usual, his head held high and his eyes tinged with red, and his thoughts were not of defeat, even though they’d landed several yards short of where Nizoanth awaited them. It doesn’t feel right, Cadereth said of his wing. I need the healers, he privately advised Tagtarth, completely unashamed of his imperfect flight. K’rou was in full agreement with him. Best to address the problem now, while it was small, and learn from it. Greatness wasn’t won by being foolhardy.

D'zrak and Bronze Slidrianth

Finally. The time had come to fly.

Since being released from the infirmary, D'zrak and Slidrianth had been working hard to catch up on their lessons. The redhead was still painfully underweight, but there was a light in his eyes that spoke of good health. He'd carefully been checking their straps, having no intention of falling off his bronze like a sharding idiot the very first time they went up in the air together!

Slidrianth stood proudly, his neck arched and his enormous wings slightly mantled with anticipation. We will be fine. He assured his rider, his eyes whirling a bright blue with his excitement. Don't have to tell me twice. D'zrak thought back, unable to hide his grin. The pair waited quietly as both golds went up, though the bronze paid special attention to his sister as she took off, silently sending her a wave of love and pride.

Finally, it was their turn. Slidrianth pushed off hard, beating his large wings to give himself lift. Up, up, up they went! D'zrak couldn't help a whoop of joy, laughing with delight. This is what being a dragonrider was all about! As they soared through the sky, a sudden gust of wind was enough to rattle them both. The bronze wobbled in the air, and D'zrak thanked Faranth that he'd made sure his straps were tight. Though the dragon quickly checked on his rider, D'zrak mentally assured him that he was fine.

How could he not be fine?

Veltanna of Green Moirath
Moirath was all but vibrating with excitement by the time her turn came. She had been cheering for each dragon and giving encouragement. Well, her form of encouragement that might not have been the best received. A “if you tilt a little more to the left you could do it upside down!” is not really welcome to the average dragon.

Veltanna checked her straps again to make sure all of Moirath’s wiggling hadn’t loosened them and found a few spots that needed adjusting. Can we go!? Can we go? We can go! He says so! Moirath half started to move. The move jerked Veltanna a little and she had to right herself quickly.

Stop. We need to be centered. This matters. One big breath, okay? Moirath breathed in. Go! And they were off. Off the ground, up in the air, gliding, and landing. It felt magical and so seemless. Veltanna was elated.

It worked! You were there! We did it! You came with me! Moirath trotted in circles. Yes. Veltanna wondered if it would ever be as magical again. She hoped so.

Shar of Green Yulaniath

Quote:
77-80. Your take off was great but your dragon seems to have trouble controlling where he or she is going. A turn of their head and tail and suddenly instead of gliding straight, they wind up veering way off course. When your dragon tries to right him or herself, they just wind up even more off course, potentially into a group of bystanders. Whoops.

"You ready?" Shar asked, tugging on the straps of the saddle to ensure they were properly tightened and buckled. Yulan swung her head around to observe the tightening around her body, prodding a strap that didn't feel quite right. Shar went to adjust it before looking to her dragon for confirmation that it was satisfactory.

Of course, Mine. Are you?

"Born ready," the young rider replied, a grin of excitement on her face. This was what she had wished for for years: to fly on the back of her own dragon. They had been through a lot of training together and Yulan was quite the flyer, acrobatic and powerful on her own. It led them both to believe this flight would be easy despite Yulan's size. Thankfully Shar was quite petite herself, but it was clear that at this height Shar's feet would touch the ground before the green was able to take off. Still, they struck a confident and dynamic pair and as the other colors had their chance to take off, they analyzed each attempt together in silence.

A powerful liftoff but a shaky flight and a hard landing. Perhaps the wind was strong. A lot of effort was put into taking off and as a result the dragon and their rider landed fairly quickly, a wing being favored. Flawless execution from start to finish. Oh dear, they didn't even get off the ground...

Finally it was their turn. Shar pulled her goggles down over her eyes and settled into the saddle, crouching low and holding on so as not to disrupt Yulaniath's flight. The small green crouched, gathering her strength, before leaping into the air and beating her wings a few powerful times. Shar felt her stomach left behind on the ground as she held on with hands and thighs alike as Yulaniath gained distance from their starting point, delight and joy passing between the two as they climbed.

But then a gust of wind caught Yulan's wings. She shifted them and twitched her tail to correct herself, but with the added weight of Shar on her back she completely miscalculated. The subtle shift sent them careening off to the side as Yulan struggled to correct their flight path. She overcompensated and they were sent shooting off in the other direction as Shar tried to help her bonded steady them. It took a few terrifying moments of this over-correcting and being blown about before they finally settled for a few moments, turning to land, and hitting the ground heavier than intended. Shar slid off Yulan's neck as the little green grimaced, her feet aching from the hard landing.

"You okay?" Shar asked quietly, still a bit shaken from the rather intense flight.

Yes, it only stings. I'm sorry, I didn't realize-

"Don't you apologize," Shar said, holding Yulan's head in her hands to force the embarrassed green to meet her eyes. "You did wonderfully. That was the first flight of many. We'll work on it, Plus you've still got some growing to do. That will help, you won't be so top heavy once you've reached your full length."

She leaned in, pressing her forehead to Yulan's and the two closed their eyes for a moment, reassurance flooding from rider to dragon. Yulaniath's wings settled on her back and her body relaxed before leaning harder into her rider, thanks and love returned full-heartedly. She knew how badly Shar wanted to be the best and this first flight had much to improve on, but the fact that Shar hadn't scolded her or seemed upset made the little green feel as though she could try again and make Shar as happy as she hoped she could.

There were more dragons out in the bowl than usual when Martirae and Anakumath made their way out, the young gold keening softly at all they passed in gentle greeting. Some would be probed more fully - how were they feeling? Were they nervous? Martirae gently tugged at Anakumath's own nervous ends, gently untangling them while listening carefully to V'res's instructions.

Carefully, Marty checked over her straps for not the last time. Another meticulous once over for not the last time for even that day. You are nervous, my dear? Looking up into those yellow eyes, swirled with blues and greens and begging for reassurances, Martirae took her head in both of her hands, leaning her forehead against her snout.

If we both keep our heads about us, we will be fine. They will not let us fall and you have practiced well. she reassured, stroking her lifemate's cheek and lingering for a while longer before she carefully mounted. Even secured in her carefully checked straps, she poured support into the young gold, reminders that they would be well while they waited their turn.

It wouldn't be a long one, at least.

Quote:

Her nerves were not still entirely soothed when it came their turn, perhaps the butterflies in Martirae's own stomach betraying her across their bond. Still, the little gold caught the air a moment after her push-off, hesitating briefly until her beloved urged her to flap, pushing her up into the sky. Anakumath's wings, large on the ground felt larger when stretched to their full potential.

They were skyborn and the freedom of the wind in her hair sent a thrill through the young woman that went rippling across her bond with the gold. It gave her a small surge of confidence as they rose, then glid down.

While the entire time airborn was pleasant enough, however, the extra weight between both Anakumath's natural build, as well as having her rider on her back, caused her to land roughly. A jolt of pain surged through their bond and as soon as the two were cleared out of the way of any other's who would need to come in to land, Martirae dismounted to check over her beloved's feet.

It isn't bad. Does it hurt? she inquired, looking over the bleeding claw that had cracked on landing. Anakumath nudged her rider's cheek. Not so badly that it will not get better quickly, she assured. Martirae would wait until the most appropriate moment to patch it up.

Yu'star and Bronze Nevidenth

You checked and double-checked. We'll be fine! Neivdenth was downright vibrating with excitement, even as Yura tugged the straps for probably the fifth or sixth time. You made sure to have one of the older riders even check them to make sure they were okay, right? They're not going to snap.

"You assume too much about my luck." Despite the statement the young man did sigh, finally deciding that whatever he did would have to work. Everyone else was already mounting up and as a bronze he was one of the first to go. "Are you ready?" Nevidenth all but trilled inside his skull. "I'm really excited."

The bronze moved to wrap his tail about Yura's waist, pulling him close for an affectionate hug before the event. We're going to show them how awesome we are together, and then maybe more of them will come and talk to us. Yura snorted. What? I love my family and want them to depend on me.

"Then we better fly well first." Nevidenth nodded in agreement, his eyes whirling a bright blue-green. When it was their turn Yura mounted up, ready to go. "I've been dreaming of this."

Me too. With a rush of wings, they took to the sky.

If they go in for a landing, it could be a bit of a crash. For dragons who are a bit more in control, they should be able to fly out of the thermal and come in for a semi-decent landing. Hope you're not afraid of heights!

" . . . . "

. . . . . .

T..thank Faranth neither of them were prone to panic, nor to heights, because as soon as that updraft hit and took them up it was rather unique. At first Yura had moved to warn - they could get in trouble - but the sight. The ground beneath, extending into the horizon? It'd taken the words from his heart and mind, leaving only that view as they spun. Nothing else was said until they landed (a bit rough, but the straps held and thus Yura did too) and the rider dismounted.

". . . . "

Can we go again? Nevidenth's tail once more snaked around Yura's waist, and the teen leaned into him. It was enough of a gesture to say it was enough for today, perhaps they could try again tomorrow.

For now?

Yura needed to change his pants.

Talis and Blue Holleth

All of their preparations had been meticulous: from exercises to stretches to straps, they had poured all due time and effort into being readt for this day. They'd even visited the Healers just the morning before to address a bit of soreness in Holleth's wings, but he'd been given a clear bill of health, assurances that it was perfectly normal in a growing, exercising young dragon. Their minds eased, Holleth had simply been easy on himself for the remainder of the day.

Just as well, since now, only a day later, they had all been summoned for their first flights with Theirs. As ever, the pair was quiet as they went about their own business, focused on the task at hand, as they all should be. If any greeted them, they would return such courtesy with quiet - and in a few cases, fond - acknowledgement, but today was not a day to lose focus. Though it would be some time before their turn came - with so very many classmates, and the metallics and browns in the air first - they wished to spend that wait keeping their own counsel.

Their eventual take-off was excellent, and Holleth's form exquisite, right up until a sharp gust of wind caught his wide wings and threatened to blow him off course. He fought it, but did so too hard, concerned about being blown too far off-course and into one of the assistants. He kept himself from such an accident, if only barely, but felt an answering twinge in his wing. The blue hissed out a breath as he wobbled in the air, but there was no question in his mind or in his rider's that they were finished for the day.

Tagtarth, he notified the brown, I have pulled a muscle. I will land, and by your leave, go to the Healers.

Mercifully, he was able to make a ginger, careful landing, although there was another sharp pain in his wing as he did so.

How...inconvenient.

91-99. What a rush! You were on fire! Maybe you showed off a little bit once you were actually in the air, but you did it! Everything went fine, and if the glide down was a little too steep, you hardly noticed it. Good job!

Zyamel & Venandith
Today was the day.

This was the moment Zyamel had been waiting for, and she couldn't wait for her turn in the air. Venandith's eyes where bright-blue-green with pleasure, and he crooned encouragement at some of his clutchmates as they waited their turn. How marvelous and elegant Mictecath & Anakumath were sure to be. And lovely Sucarith, Slidrianth, Samedith, Samodith, Aveforth, and Alegriath were sure wow the crowd. He couldn't wait to see them all up in the air, couldn't wait to see them catch wind beneath their wings.

But primarily, he couldn't wait to get up there. "Hold still, you. You keep twisting your neck. I need to get these tightened," Zyamel laughed, gently admonishing her beloved brown. She didn't blame him. She was excited too. This was their first time flying, and she wanted to make sure everything was perfect.

Soon, all their eyes will be upon me... and you. We'll give them quite a show of it, won't we, Mine? The brown dragon stepped eagerly from foot to foot.

Zyamel gave a smile, and leaned in to plant a small kiss on her dragon's shoulder. We'll be brilliant, Ven. Of that, Zyamel was certain. Finally, after all this time, she would truly get to be a rider. While flaming and fighting Thread were high on her list of anticipated firsts, this flight would finally make her a true rider. While she'd sat on Venandith before, testing out her straps, and getting a feel for mounting and dismounting, this was the first time they'd be up in the air together, as rider & dragon.

So the two watched as others were called before them, and waited with anticipation.

Finally... it was time.

Whoops.
