Katranak had missed her chance to face the rogue Anwar again last week, this week she was making a point of waiting for her to turn up again. Xiuhcoatl had told the young soldier about their fight and she was amused to hear how angry she had gotten over the chit-chatting during the fight. It wasn't something Katranak was good at but it was something she had to put up with an awful lot. Her mother was a very paws-on instructor and didn't hesitate to correct or advise them when they sparred. Naturally, she still hadn't bested the Regent yet.. but maybe she would someday.

She was laying in the sand, out in the open, watching the borders. Utsaha was curled up at her side, scratching behind her ears and chattering quietly about the goings-on around the border today. The jackal kept track of Katranak's progress at the lion's request but really, she liked wandering around and collecting the gossip for her. The Firekin could be really fascinating.

Anwar was surprised, and a bit nervous, to find someone waiting for her. Not just anyone, but Katranak, the first Firekin lioness she'd fought attempting to get into the pride. Cruel words filled her throat, but the one-time Captain managed to swallow them whole.

"Shall we try this again?" the smaller lioness asked, voice harsher than usual in her turnmoil. Anwar almost attacked right away...but that would be rude, to attack an opponent whilst laying down. It was more fitting to wait until Katranak rose to her feet.

Roll 1: Bide!
Total: 2

Utsaha was still yammering away cheerily when Anwar approached the pair of them, only stopped when Katranak nudged her on her way up to her feet to meet the returning challenger. The jackal squeaked, realized what was happening and jumped up as well, shaking off the sand and walking off to put some distance between herself and the lions.

"Let's see what you can do," Katranak said with a smile, shaking off the sand and wasting no time putting some distance between them. She paced steadily around, watching Anwar carefully, but made no immediate move to attack. But she was definitely ready.

The smaller lioness had had two previous attempts and had been sorely beaten both times. Not punishingly so, but her pride was definitely battered. She refused to be the first to engage, therefore, waiting to see what her opponent would do.

She did not wish to embarrass herself again.

Roll 2: Glancing Blow!
Total: 4

It seemed they both had similar ideas when Anwar didn't move to attack her first this time. It was .. a strategy, at least, and one that differed from her last two fights for sure. If she wasn't going to attack first, then Katranak had no choice but to break the ice. With some distance between them, she was able to get a running start before leaping at her opponent.

It wasn't really a move made expecting to hit, they were both on guard so she wasn't surprised when she hit the sand harder than she hit Anwar- and she was eager to see what her opponent did with this opening.

Utsaha sat quietly on the sidelines, scratching at her ear again and wondering how things would play out this time. Anwar looked determined, Katranak looked.. amused. If she had to guess, Kat would let the lioness in even if she lost at this point but that wasn't really how it worked. Seemed she was making an impression, even when losing.

Anwar had taken worse hits. Not just in training or in practice, but from this very lioness. She appreciated that Katranak wasn't completely overpowering her today...but also resented the fact that it seemed the other lioness was taking it easy. She didn't want anyone's pity, damnit.

"Don't go easy on me!" the lioness growled, leaping at her opponent, paws outstretched. She would not accept Katranak losing on purpose, not when she'd witnessed firstpaw what the other lioness was capable of.

Katranak didn't think she could be surprised by anything that Anwar would do once she was within striking range but she was, mostly in that she was suspected of taking pity on the other lioness. She laughed, even after she was struck (and hard!) but kept moving.

"I wouldn't!" she declared, but making a poor show of it when she barely managed to retaliate. Off to the side, Utsaha put her foot down and started really paying attention. Things were suddenly looking much more interesting! Perhaps Anwar had finally found her footing in the sand.

To her surprise, Anwar found a smile crooking her lips as Katranak denied holding back...and then failed to land her next blow solidly. So so so...perhaps she was being truthful. If so, the smaller lioness did indeed have a chance at victory this day.

However, looking too far ahead had likely caused her other defeats and Anwar found her paws slipping in the sand once again. Cursing her own stupidity, she resolved to not let her advantage slip too far away this time.

Roll 4: Miss!

Utsaha was sitting at attention and watching very carefully as things seemed to be turning around in Anwar's favour.. and then she sighed and relaxed again when she saw the challenger starting to slip in the sand again. Her back foot was half-way to her ear again when suddenly she saw Katranak slip, too. Making a face, she put her foot back down and tilted her head.

Who.. was winning? Neither of them had a distinct advantage at this point.

When Anwar slipped, Katranak smirked and went in to strike-- and this time she was the one who slipped, falling far short of hitting her target. Her recovery was smoother, she was much more used to the sand, but it didn't help her in this case.

A snort escaped from Anwar's mouth as her opponent was tripped up by the treacherous terrain as much as she'd been. Well, perhaps not as much, but as well, which did make things seem better. And when one aspect of the combat looked up, it was hard not to believe it was possible to win.

Scrambling to her feet, the smaller lioness managed to lay in another glancing blow as she rose. It was...better than nothing. Better than missing and better than falling down. Again.

Katranak was not quick enough to completely avoid the attack but she wasn't struck hard. She turned herself abruptly and put all of her weight into tackling her opponent, they were about even and if she wanted to win, she'd have to do something big. If Anwar wanted to win, she'd have to do something bigger.

Utsaha watched intently, unsure just how this would all play out in the end. It looked like Katranak just might pull it off at the last minute but maybe Anwar had another idea.

The breath left Anwar's body in an unexpected rush as she took Katranak's full weight from the blow. She'd known how big and heavy the other lioness was, but it had been half a moon since she'd last...experienced...the difference. Gods in the Haven, Firekin were large!

Still, if Katranak was going to come so close, she might as well take advantage. The former Captain rammed her head into her opponent with all the strength she could muster, praying that this time it would finally be enough.

Katranak yelped when Anwar hit back with as much force as she did, and she did her damnedest to keep pushing back but it was apparent after a few seconds that they could end up there all day. Neither appeared to really win this fight but the important thing was that Anwar didn't lose, so Katranak gave up and stepped back, breathing heavily.

"I think you'll do fine here," she said, shaking herself off. Utsaha, recognizing the end of the fight, started back in towards the lions, grinning.

"That was a good one," the jackal said brightly, plopping down at Katranak's feet and scratching behind her ears for a moment before straightening up, "I thought for sure you had her when she slipped but then you slipped."

Katranak rolled her eyes, giving the jackal a shove.

"Hey!" Utsaha grumbled and picked herself up, not sitting back down this time and instead choosing to glare at her lion friend.

"You mean...that was enough?" the lioness panted, still unsteady on her feet after using her head as a weapon. Her eye fell upon the jackal who now felt free to offer her own opinion.

"And...who is this? I don't think we were ever introduced." She tilted her head, considering the two encounters she'd had with Katranak. "Point of fact, I don't think I ever introduced myself to you. Anwar, former Captain in the Myrsky Syntynyt," she added with an inclination of her head.

"Yes," Katranak answered, making sure to speak more formally at least when addressing the question of whether or not that was enough. It was fine to be friendly but there were very few lions who took kindly to laid-back attitudes to victory and advancement, "We don't expect every new member to be able to flatten a Firekin, you didn't lose spectacularly either time before and you kept up this time. If you still want in, you're in."

Utsaha put a couple paces between her and Katranak, grinning.

"I'm Utsaha," she said, "I'm from the jackal clan, we like partnering up with the Firekin. I help Katranak figure out what she's doing right- or wrong- when she fights."

Kat nodded.

"It's nice to meet you, Anwar," she said, "Captain, eh? I don't know much about outside the desert, but that sounds promising. You'll have a lot to learn about our ranks here, it'll be interesting to see how our army compares."
