Current Situation

After arriving in the desert, the Firekin/Mwezi search party investigated the abandoned city previously occupied by the Nergui. Within the temple, they found the remnants of the Nergui and the missing Mwezi lions. Nuri, one of the Nergui, explained that the Hoard had moved on with the Graos Oma and left many of them behind. They stole Kaar (seers) from the Mwezi'Johari in hopes that they could rebuild without their leaders or the alleged Graos Oma, but their hopes have been dashed and they've given up.

The search party stayed for a few days in the temple city to rest and let one injured captive recover before they planned to start their journey back over the mountain.

Further investigation in the area corroborate Nuri's story: Other Nergui stragglers are found and tell the same story. Signs of migration northward are found but the trail is lost not far out. While they don't know where the Nergui have gone, the Firekin and Mwezi'Johari can be quite sure that they have left the desert. Not knowing is a step backward but morale among those left behind is a decent indication that the level of threat coming from this foe is significantly lower now than it has been in the past.

There is plenty to report home with and as the investigations wrap up and days pass, there are many eager lions to get going again.

About this ORP

Who can participate:

  • Firekin who were on the search party.
  • Mwezi who were on the search party + the kidnapped lions.
  • Nergui who are interested in petitioning to join the Firekin (post here) or the Mwezi'Johari (post here)

Setting

    The mountain range between the desert and the Mwezi'Johari is not especially big, but it doesn't make for an easy journey, especially not with a group like this. Heading for the mountains around midday, they are a rather ominous sight. The Mwezi'Johari is currently experiencing an unending night that goes beyond their territory, but it only reaches over part of the mountains. The darkness beyond them is obvious, but the cause is not yet clear to any of our travelers.

There will be danger in this ORP.

((For anybody interested - Lirda has set off on her own, she's not interested in either the Firekin or Mwezi'Johari))

Ljena had been feeling better since the arrival of her father (and the others) and the rescue of herself and her friends, but now as they prepared to head back over the mountain and go home.. she was feeling uneasy. Something was wrong but she couldn't quite put her paw on the issue, and trying to look ahead wasn't working for her. While the group was headed towards the mountains, the young lioness left her father's side and was weaving through the crowd to try to find Matumaini and Onwa'ohuru. If they didn't feel it to, she would feel better.. and whether or not they did, maybe they would have an easier time trying to divine the problem.

It was strange, traveling with the Firekin.. but after her time with the Nergui, she was grateful for them. She could see them now, pick them out in the group. A few were obvious but the others weren't. They'd explained how some of their redder companions had been refused, considering the veritable rainbow the Mwezi came in, it worked until you were looking for it. Of course, Ljena had never been a suspicious lioness.. maybe it would be more obvious to others.

She nearly tripped over her feet when cutting across Ud and scrambled to get out of his way and continue her search for her friends. It was awkward moving around a group while it moved steadily in one direction.

Rolling his shoulders the black male spotted a pale white and yellow female walking as if she was on a mission, the way she moved clued him into the notion that perhaps she was looking for someone in particular? Looking over towards his place companion he gave the slave ranked male a nudge. "So do you have anyone back home?" Small talk time he supposed.

Nkon was lost in thought and had just been thinking about some of the current ongoings and was stolen away from those thoughts when the black male asked him a question. "Oh..... Um... Not yet? I mean maybe." He had been talking with a rather nice female but he was uncertain as to if it was going to go anywhere? He really hoped it would but who was to say really.

"What about you?"

Laughing the black male shook his head, "Not yet. I haven't really given much thought to the ladies as of yet." It was true, that hadn't been something he had really thought of until recently. Maybe when he got back home it would be a different story.

"It stinks here," Onwa muttered under her breath ash she concentrated on walking. It wasn't easy to move at the same pace as the other lions, but being left behind would certainly be far worse. But combined with the smell, it made for a bad mood on the black lioness' part.

Sure, she was happy to be found and in the safety of the group, but something wasn't right, she could smell it.

"You smell that, 'Maini?"

Matumaini was more focused on supporting half of Onwa'ohuru's weight than on any scent, but he obediently sniffed around as she asked. He smelled...lion. And dirt. There was a hint of rain on the wind too...but he couldn't detect anything that justified the expression on Onwa's face.

"No Onwa, I don't smell anything. Sorry. Maybe someone else here does?" the white male reasoned, looking around. He hoped someone else would - given the reputation Onwa's mother had, he really didn't want his friend to be crazy.

Har gave a sigh as he walked, though it was muffled slightly by the makeshift pouch in his mouth. It was really just a strip of leather he'd found and fashioned into a crude bag, but it was getting the job done. This way he could carry the gifts he'd found without having to throw them on and have everyone stare at him, something he didn't really want to deal with.

He glanced to the side as he noticed some of their group shifting position, and then shrugged. Maybe they were just restless to get home. He honestly couldn't blame them, considering how they'd been taken from it.

To be honest, he was itching to get home too. He had a family waiting for him, and he had a feeling that Senka was chomping at the bit to get out and about. He could only hope that she'd allowed one of the other lionesses' to watch the cubs and give her some time to herself.

Ah, well. They just had to make it over the mountain, and if they'd done it once, they could do it again.

As the group continued forward, Tawi and his avian bond Mstiri stayed towards the end of the pack. The green falcon was still scolding the male for making a brash attempt of taking down the lion.

"He needed help, and Raia had..." Tawi's voice was quiet. His gaze shifted to his wife, a content sigh leaving his lips. She had said the words, and the blue lion had jumped at the sound of them, not thinking of the consequences from the action. In turn, it left him with a few bruises and scratches. They would heal, but did make traveling uncomfortable.

"Still stupid." Mstiri scolded, pecking at his ear before lifting in flight to hover over the traveling lions, his eyes watching the group.

"...and that is why you make sure to tread carefully in sand."

"Aahhh," Horae nodded, trying to learn a bit more about this "Motoujamii" lands that the red lions were from. The idea of constantly being on sand was something she disliked greatly. There was nothing better than the feeling of solid ground, of grass to help you grip on the ground as you ran, of...the smell of wet earth in the early mornings. It was not a place she would ever want to visit, especially after their little stint in this desert with the ruins. Horae wasn't one to turn down knowledge, however; if for some reason she ended up in such a terrain again, she wanted to make sure she would return home safely.

"The worst I've run into is broken bones from scavengers," Huolongmai mentioned, motioning her paws on the dirt around them. "Granted its easy to see them here, but in the sand, when the sun is high....it is not so easy."

"Well, I've learned that you have to really feel the ground when you're running when it is wet," Horae offered. "Claws can be tricky, as you don't want to wear them down too fast. More practice than anything, but I'm assuming it would feel opposite than with soft sand."

The two lionesses hadn't mingled too much during the initial part of the excursion, but after the few days rest and recovering, and no longer the stress of missing lions hanging over their heads, it was easier to mingle with those of opposite prides. Horae was a very proud guard, and she was eager to learn how another pride trained its own, and what things she may be able to incorporate into her own training to keep her body and mind sharp.

The brown lioness was rather eager to get home; she hoped that Kasih was doing well, and hoped to have a deep discussion with the lioness upon return. The firekin was thoroughly enjoying her own trip, and wasn't in a huge rush to get home.

After resting up for a few days, the group had moved out back in the direction they had come from. Ud's scrapes from the ambush had healed enough that he could move without it stinging and he was glad to be on the move once more, putting the desert and the last of their enemies behind them. He was both glad and disappointed to see that the Nergui were, in essence, no more, as it meant less of a headache for the Firekin but certainly a lot more questions. Where had they gone exactly? Would they be back? Was it worth it to worry about them any longer?

His thoughts were interrupted as one of the lions that had been kidnapped - Ljena, if he remembered correctly - darted in front of him, nearly causing him to step on her tail, but he caught himself a moment before doing so. A little smile tickled Ud's maw as she watched her bound off, glad that she was safe. Although the primary mission for the Firekin had been to find out anything they could about the Nergui, he had been hoping they'd find the Mwezi lions that had gone missing as well. Their missions had been a success, although he had to admit the Mwezi seemed to be the more successful of the two parties.

---

Jens plodded along in the thick of the group, occasionally bumping shoulders with other lions, Mwezi and Firekin alike. He was fairly large in his pride but walking among the red giants - even though there weren't many of them - made him feel more like a normal sized male. They were quite fascinating to look at, he had to admit, and openly stared at some of them and their bold coloration and markings. Curious, he lengthened his stride to catch up to one of them who was speaking to a lioness from the Mwezi.

"Are the deserts red like you where you're from?" he asked, butting into the conversation the two females were having without realizing. "Is that why you're all red? Does it help you blend in?"

Ljena spotted Onwa and 'Maini walking along together and hurried over to them. She didn't hear Onwa's question but she heard 'Maini's answer and guessed that she wasn't alone in feeling uneasy. It didn't help that her friends were still struggling, they'd waited as long as they could in the desert but getting back home was as important for Onwa's recovery as taking it easy..

"You feel it, too," she said, "Something.. isn't right."

The young lioness stopped walking suddenly and looked off at the mountains nervously. They were darker than she remembered, but that wasn't the problem. Something was coming.

exclaim EVENT: Earthquake

All at once, the ground begins to shake beneath your feet. It gets stronger and louder as the nearby mountains are broken apart by the earth's movement. While no great rifts open up beneath the travelers, rocks begin to fall down the mountainside in all directions.. including down the path the lions were headed.

Roll 1d4
1 - You are hurt in the rockslide, moderate injury or greater.
2 - You are hurt in or while fleeing the rockslide, mild injury.
3 - You are able to avoid the worst of it, minor injury.
4 - You are able to avoid danger completely and escape unscathed.

If you roll a four, you may rescue another character who rolled worse than you.

  • Save someone who rolled a 3 - both characters escape unscathed.
  • Save someone who rolled a 2 - both characters receive minor injuries.
  • Save someone who rolled a 1 - rescuer receives minor injuries, rescued lion received mild injuries.

Since you may be saved, it's important not to write graphic, specific details of your injuries in your first post.

Don't harass anybody who rolls a 4 to save you. Let them decide who to save, if anybody. It'll depend on the character as much as the player.

Examples

  • Minor injuries - something you can ignore/walk off easily, i.e. bumps, bruises, scrapes, etc.
  • Mild injuries - something that will slow you down but isn't serious, i.e. small wounds, twisted ankles, faceplants, etc.
  • Moderate injuries - something that will slow you down and take time to heal properly, i.e. larger wounds, sprains, strains, etc.
  • Optional injuries - anything that will take skill to treat, significant time to heal and/or have a lasting impact on your character - broken bones, crushed anything, concussions/other head trauma, etc.

User Image Against potentially her better judgement, but also feeding into a deep desire to belong somewhere that wasn't going to feel trapping, Nuri had begun to tag along with the group. The hyenas had gone... She didn't know where, nor did she care to know. Mahiri had fled at the first opportunity, the scrawny little coward. Kmorr had sighed and limped off elsewhere, probably to find some way to die an honorable death as dictated by Tra Ord Omak... Or so he said. But Nuri... Nuri knew vaguely what she wanted, and being trapped somewhere was not it.

As she was looking at the mountains they were climbing, though, the ground under her paws shifted. The dark lioness let out a startled yell, paws shifting to try and steady herself. Distracted by her attempts to remain stable, she didn't see the rocks coming until they rained down on her, bruising and cutting her paws and legs - The scrap of old carpet across her back had at least protected her from that much.

Die 1: Onwa'ohuru. Die 2: Matumaini

The black lioness sneezed as if trying to evict the stink from her nostrils. It seemed omnipresent and more intense every passing moment. She was so distracted, that she almost failed to notice the sudden shaking of the ground on which they stood. Looking up, a cry escaped Onwa's lips as she saw rocks of all sizes tumbling down towards the group. The lioness tried to move away, but she was hampered by her existing injuries.

Well, it seemed the Great Lion thought she needed to bleed more. So be it. The lioness gritted her teeth and moved towards what she thought might be safety as fast as her mangled body allowed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Matumaini was fruitlessly sniffing around, looking in all directions for the source of the smell his friend complained of. He saw the rocks beginning to move as he felt the strange surging of the earth beneath him. It took a moment - no one ever expected an earthquake in the Mwezi'Johari - but the white lion realized they needed to get out of the danger zone.
"We've got to get out of here!" he called out, suiting actions to words. Unfortunately, his hesitation was costing him as he could only avoid the larger rocks as they fell. The smaller ones bruised and battered him, drawing bloody marks across his white fur. It was long moments later that he realized he'd abandoned Onwa in his haste to get away.
Though he wasn't a seer, Ud felt a slight shift in the air moments before he felt anything beneath his paws. The rumbling was subtle at first, but after just seconds it turned violent and jarring. The large red lion stopped moving immediately, his eyes turning in the direction of the mountains that loomed over them. He could hear things shifting, rolling, coming down the hills...and right for them.
"Get out of the way!" he bellowed, eyes darting this way and that to try to find a clear path to direct everyone. Unfortunately it seemed rocks were coming from all sides, bearing down on others faster than he could keep track of. He kept an eye out for anyone within reach that he might be able to help, particularly the Mwezi who had come with them. They weren't built for fighting, nor were they particularly hardy creatures, and yet one of them had helped him in his time of need back at the ruins. Far be it from him to turn his back on those that helped.
As if on cue, Ud's eyes rested on a pair of Mwezi, both of whom had been kidnapped by the Nergui. The male was the queen's son, if he remembered correctly, and the dark female was already injured from the Nergui's 'hospitality'. Boulders were rolling right for the duo and he knew there was no way the female was getting out of the way in time.
Claws extending into the dirt for more traction, Ud charged towards the pair as male darted off, dodging flying debris on his own. The female seemed resigned to her fate, digging in and hunkering down, but Ud wasn't going to let anyone be flattened on his watch.
With a pounce, Ud landed between the dark lioness and the boulder that was rolling towards her. He had no hope of stopping it, but he hoped he could at least shove her to safety. Just a few paces forward and she'd be free of any additional life-altering wounds, but he'd have to get her there fast.
"Come on," he urged, lowering her head to press against her shoulder, urging her forward. He pushed a bit harder as the ground shook again under their paws, the boulder the cause this time rather than an earthquake. Giving her a rough shove forward, Ud found himself still in the boulder's path. He barely had a moment to leap after the lioness, the rumbling rock connecting with his hip before he could clear its radius. It sent him sprawling sideways onto the ground snarling in pain, his hind leg aching enough that he didn't rise to his paws right away. He allowed himself a few moments to assess the damage and after wiggling his toes and moving his limb, he decided nothing was broken and he'd be fine. Eventually.
"You okay?" he asked, his voice more gruff than usual as he got himself to his feet, lightly favoring his hind left leg. "Well...not including your previous injuries."
[Ud is using his 4 to save Onwa'ohuru]
---
Before the lioness could respond, Jens' ear flicked slightly and a shiver ran up his spine. Although he was a seer he didn't have visions often, but his natural animal instinct let him know something bad was about to happen just in time for him to turn towards the hills. Indeed, something bad did happen. Jens was no stranger to avalanches, but whatever this was seemed to shake the whole earth. He knew how to survive tons of snow flying down a mountain at him, and as he saw the rocks coming his way he let out a little breath of relief. If it was snow you just had to hunker down and hold on. It was everywhere. Rocks, on the other hand, could be dodged.
