Esben looked startled at Julie’s sudden proclamation, brow knitting together in mild confusion. What was she on about? Was she making this a competition? Because she would certainly lose to his superior warrior ways! He puffed his own cheeks out in response. "Fine! But yer Chicken won’t! Byr’s from a long line of tough warriors! He knows what he’s doin’!" He stuck his tongue at her, grinning wildly at the bear pokemon. Byr huffed and gave a squeaky of a roar in agreement.
His attention was diverted to Tria again as she acted out in response to their intentions, clearly doubtful and concerned for the children’s wellbeing. He’d seen this kind of behavior before… like once, but still. "Yeh! They’ll be fine! They’re pokies!" He confirmed with a solid nod, fists on his hips. Byr yelped as Chico disappeared, huffing his cheeks out and quickly rushing after the Chikorita as well. Isi chirped, startled, which started Flef on his excited chirping ways once more. Esben grimaced, adjusting the Danshen in his arms. "Sheesh Flef, why’re you so noisy?"
He held Flef out in front of him, nodding and beginning to hop his way down to the path, stepping off to the side to start heading around the house. "Yeh! So let’s get lookin’!" Esben straightened himself up, peering around the side. There was a dense run of trees and marsh on the side of the house; it was clear the land hadn’t been taken care of for a long while. Shoes would clearly be lost in this endeavor. Yuck.
In the meantime, Byr followed Chico, eventually catching up to the CHikorita and swatting him in the backside to get his attention. ’Slow down! You don’t even know where to look!’ He snapped, cheeks puffing as he looked around the house. He mildly recognized where they’d come from before as well as where Julie had gone, making note that they wouldn’t need to check there. Probably. ’You have ta have a plan! We have ta think of where we’re lookin’!’

Julie scrunched up her face and promptly stuck her tongue back out at Esben, defiantly squaring her shoulders shaking her head as she did. She didn't linger on the squabbling (for now) but she would certainly remember this going forward. Instead, she watched as both of the pokies ran off, petting Tria as she stared at the house a moment, only to look over as Flef started chirping. She smiled, and immediately wanted to reach out and take the little pokie, but held herself back.
"Maybe we could ride Tria!" she suggested, clogging after Esben as he moved off the path and started trying to look around. The horse pokemon gave a low sound in agreement, and gently nudged the girl, getting her to stop. Despite how.... unpleasant the ground was, it clearly got worse up ahead, and Tria laid down on the ground so Julie could climb up. It took a bit of doing, but she managed it, and turned to wiggle her fingers at Esben to offer him a hand up. "C'mon Esby!" she urged. At least this way, they could look a little faster, and have a better vantage point, too! And Isi and Mareepa could shuffle about the bushes!
Meanwhile, Chico bucked a bit and shot a glare at the smack, uttering an indignant sound but slowing. "Sure I do! E v e r y w h e r e," he retorted shortly. He did take a moment to look around, though, gauging the different paths they could go. The house wasn't very big, and they had already looked through some of it. "Come on! You go that way, I'll go this!" Chico decided, before bounding off in the direction Julie had found Mareepa. It was less explored, after all!

Esben had already trekked a good 2 to 3 feet away from Julie and Tria to get a better look around the side of the house, only stopping when he heard the girl mention that maybe they could ride the Rapidash. It was a better means of mobility and certainly would’ve spared their shoes the thick much that was the marsh. But Esben didn’t entirely feel comfortable with the idea. He hadn’t forgotten what had happened in the dream, and while he was mildly aware that it hadn’t been real, the grim reminder that the horse had panicked and bucked them off still danced in his memories.
"Ah… no… no, I can walk," he mumbled, raising a hand and swatting away the offering from Julie. He kept his gaze ahead, instead continuing to try and make his way further despite the thickness of the mud and sludge. Esben made a face at every suckling ‘smoosh’ sound his boots made with each step. He was disgusted by the marsh or anything, he’d been through his fair share of mud in his time, but he’d certainly never dealt with it being this thick. Flef’s chirps had died down to gentle trills at this time, aware of his trainer’s silent anxiety. He was mildly disappointed that they wouldn’t get to enjoy a ride on Tria, he’d have enjoyed the bird’s eye view! "You can go ahead if ya want though. I can… I’ll check the stumps and stuff! Make sure you don’t miss anything!"
Byr huffed and stared at Chico for his remark. What did that even mean? Everywhere? That would take forever! ’ That’s not what I-’ he started, looking ready to swatch at the Chikorita again before the pokemon took command of the situation, barking orders on where he ought to look. ’Hey!’ The Teddiursa called, but Chico was already bounding off in his selected direction. Byr bristled, about to follow but decided against it, instead turning and beginning his toddle down his own selected direction to look. He didn’t know what Chico’s deal was, but he had a point. At least splitting up, they had a greater chance of covering all areas as quickly as possible.

Julie scrunched up her face as Esben not only turned down the chance to ride her pony, but swatted her hand away. Tria immediately stood up, more than ready to get out of the mud, and cast a glance down at Esben. Julie, however, perked up when Esben said to go ahead, and beamed. "Okay!" she agreed, because in her mind, that meant she would definitely win the race they weren't even having. Nevermind the fact that this was supposed to be an effort to find her older brother. Recklessly flapping her feet, she urged Tria forward, and the equestrian pokemon began a slow, long-legged walk on to search around the house, letting Julie peer this way and that, while trying to keep the girl balanced.
Julie leaned over and looked up, trying to search all the areas as Tria walked her around. She pouted when she found herself rounding towards the entrance without finding anything. It took about three seconds for her to start getting restless and bored, and she shifted on the horses back to look around for signs of Esben. When she waited another whole thirty seconds and still nothing, she lifted her hands to her mouth. "Esby! Where are you? Did you find anything?" she called as loudly as she could.
Inside, Chico had rushed about, using his vines and attack to smash open cupboards and push aside doors. He was determined to find something, but besides a few ghost pokemon (which he immediately attacked on sheer principle) there was.... nothing. He bristled as he stood there, lookign for some other door, desperate to accomplish something for Julie, but there was nothing. He withdrew his vines and huffed, his gaze lowering to the floor. And as a chill started creeping up his spine, he quickly took off to go find Byr. "Hey! Did you find anything, Bear?!" he called, bounding along and ducking shadows to avoid any possible ghost traps. If there wasn't anything here -- and there couldn't be, otherwise he would have found it -- then he at least wanted to get back to Julie quickly. There wasn't any guarantee the ghosties would stay in the house, after all, and even if she had Tria and.... Flaaffa, or whatever, he still didn't want to be away from her long.

Esben averted his gaze as he rejected Julie’s offer, trying to conceal his sigh of relief. He was admittedly pleased that she didn’t attempt to press it (not that he’d have agreed if she had!) instead immediately kicking Tria into action. Flef gave a trill of a chirp as the duo started off, wiggling in Esben’s arms as though wanting to follow.
"Hush Flef!" He scolded, looking up as Tria and Julie lead the charge. He started his own slow dredge after, pausing every once in a while to check around the trees or in any bushes about the place; most weren’t thick or deep enough to hide a body as big as Torin, but the young Viking wanted to be certain that he didn’t miss a thing! He’d not have Julie come along and show him up regarding who was the best tracker! Eventually, though, his searching took a turn downhill and about halfway through, he just gave a cursory look here and there. Maybe he should’ve taken Julie up on her offer for a ride.
No! He was fine! Esben huffed, holding a trilling Flef closer to his chest and slogging the remainder of the way around the house. He blinked, a three-fourths of the way around, hearing Julie shouting for him. "No! I ain’ found nothin’!" He shouted back, agitation in his tone. Esben finally caught up, boots and the lower hem of his pants caked in mud. Ugh. "Did you… ugh… did you find anythin’?" He asked, coming to a halt on the stone path once more. He plopped down on his rear, setting Flef down beside him and he tried to wipe the muck from his pants.
Byr had done his own search of the area, though with far less of a hazardous mess. If only because, compared to Chico, he lacked extra appendages that could reach the high points. He checked under and, in every nook, and cranny he could, roaring his way through any ghosts that he happened to run into. In one of his searches, he happened to find a few odd-looking scales, which caught his attention. Byr picked them up, looking them over. Maybe this was some sort of evidence?! He’d take it with him.
He scooped them up and continued his search. Finding nothing, and beginning to think this was a hopeless endeavor, he returned towards the front of the house, nearly running into Chico as he appeared out of nowhere. ’What?’ He said, confused by the way his name was said, but shaking it off. Unlike Esben, Byr could hardly tell the difference. ’I didn’ find the man. But I found these!’ He remarked, holding up the scales he’d found with pride. ’I bet they’re a clue! Esben will know! So c’mon!’ He announced, not at all giving the Chikorita a chance to comment, instead rushing back for the door. The sooner they were out of this house, the better.

Julie absently kicked her feet as she waited for some sort of sign from Esben. Tria, thankfully, didn't seem to mind, though she did turn her head when the boy's voice finally rung out. Julie also perked up, trying to look for some sign of him. He still sounded kind of far away, and she scrunched up her face, a mix of impatience and victory. She totally beat him in looking around, but he was going so slow and she had already waited forevvverrrrr. "Hurry up Esby!" she added, hands lifted to megaphone the demand, before dropping them as he finally showed around the corner. She shook her head to his question. "Nuh uh. There was nothin' in the trees 'r nothin' either," she said, watching him try and clean off his trousers.
"Didja get all stuck in the mud 'n stuff?" she asked curiously, remaining on her perch up above. A bleat caught her attention and she looked over to see Mareepa sloshing her way through the mud, wobbling and occasionally toppling over to roll around and then climb back to her feet. Whether it was walking on two legs, or the thick mud, she seemed to be having trouble, but on closer inspection, she didn't seem to mind in the least. In fact, she seemed to flail around a little more than necessary in the mud, and occasionally drop to all fours to wiggle and attempt to bound, only to finally pull herself onto the path with Esben, plop down, and bleat happily, now thoroughly discolored in thick brown earth.
Julie giggled, but she stopped as she heard sounds from the house, and looked over. Chico was was running out after Byr, looking annoyed that the pokemon now had a lead. He was saying... something, but Julie didn't understand, but she didn't notice the irked expression or tone in the pokemon's voice and just grinned-- initially. When she noticed no one following, though, something seemed to finally sink in. Namely, the reason why they were all searching-- Torin. And he wasn't coming out with the pokemon, and neither pokemon was ushering them back in, so.... so they didn't find him either....
Her shoulders dropped and she looked down, sighing softly, but she didn't burst into tears. Instead, she reached up and rubbed her eye with another shaky breath. She was just feeling kind of.... tired now.... Stifling a yawn, she moved to lay on her tummy on top of Tria, but looked over as she noticed Byr holding something, a curious look crossing her face.

"Huh… so nothin’?" Esben murmured, still working to remove the much from his boots. His cheeks briefly puffed in agitation, shooting the girl a defiant look. "No! … Well, maybe. But it ain’ nothin’! We use ta have a ton of snow around we’d have ta trek through sometimes! And then mud from that! I’m used to it!" Esben stated, returning to his attempts to clear the mud off with new fervor.
He paused at the commotion, looking up and spotting Mareepa as she struggled to even walk through the mud. It was the most confusing thing he’d ever seen. "Is yer sheep stuck or somethin’?" Grimacing as the pokemon plopped down next to him on the walkway, swiping away some mud that splashed his way in the process.
Esben was about to comment when the sound of roars and scuttling from the doorway, scrambling to his feet just as Byr skid to a halt before him with something clasped in his paws. "What’cha got there Byr?" Byr gave a small roar, handing the items over to him. The boy took a moment to look the strange items over. They were oval, almost like flower petals, with a soft rainbow sheen to them. He hadn’t seen things like this before and a frown formed on his face. "Are these… rocks? Or… scales?" He murmured, rolling them over in his hands. Had they come for a pokemon perhaps? Maybe it’d had something to do with Julie’s brother’s disappearance!
"Huh… What do ya think these are Julie?" He turned, offering them up towards her to look, pausing only when he noticed that she seemed to be drifting off. A bit. "Are you sleepin’?! Hey! Julie scrunched up her face like she wasn't so sure whether Esben trekking through snow and mud really explained anything. "So.... why'dja take so long, then?" she followed up. Clearly, if anything, it just confused her a bit. She didn't bother responding about Mareepa at first, mostly because she wasn't really.... sure. She grinned after a long pause, however, and shook her head, watching the sheep happily flail her arms. "I think she was just havin' fun!' she decided. Honestly, it was probably both, but Julie, as per usual, decided to give her pokemon the benefit of the doubt.
She looked with interest as Byr rushed over to Esben and handed something over, but peered a little more closely as Esben looked them over. She stifled another yawn, still laying down, while trying to peer down at the items. "Nuh! I'm not tired," she quickly argued, puffing out her cheeks at him with a pout. Despite what she claimed, she stayed laying on Tria's back even as she turned a more quizzical look to the items. "They're pretty...." she mumbled, wishing she could reach out and take one. Sighing, she pushed herself up to sit.
Chico looked annoyed at Esben's question, even though it was a perfectly fair one, and looked away, very clearly empty handed as he moved to Tria's other side. "What should we do now, Esby...?" Julie asked wistfully, rubbing her eyes a bit and then dropping them to look at the boy again. Tria shifted her stance, making Julie wobble a little but catching her as she moved to stand more on the path, looking out towards a clearing in the marsh. Personally.... she felt it would be good to start moving towards civilization. The sun was starting to get very low, light was fading, and temperatures were dropping. And both of the children needed to wash up and get some proper rest...

Esben huffed, cheeks puffing out as he shot Julie a look. "’Cause I was walkin’!" He snapped, pointing at her and Tria. "I ain’ got 4 long legs like yer pony!" He folded his arms over his chest, looking between Julie and Mareepa as she responded. "In the mud…?" He shook his head; Esben had never been a fan of mud and snow trekking, but that was probably because his height rarely afforded him the means to travel easily through it.
He eyed the shards a little more, then eyed Julie as he tried to show her. Despite her claim that she wasn’t tired, she certainly seemed that way. "Yer tired!" He announced, puffins his own cheeks again. When Chico failed to produce anything he’d found, he sighed, rubbing his own eyes and wincing when he smeared mud on his face. Yuck!
"Hrmph…," he grumbled, looking around. They’d found nothing in the house… and nothing at the carnival. And despite how the scales looked, he was certain that a dragon wasn’t involved. So… where was there left to look? Attempting to wipe the mud that he’d added to his face, Esben looked back to Julie and Tria, then to his own pokemon. Flef had quieted down into soft coos, eye half-open as he started to fade from all the excitement of the day. Even the other three looked a little on the tired side.
"I guess…we could go back ta town and… and see if anyone saw him there!" He announced, attempting to sound confident. Scooping Flef up into his arms, he looked grinned, looking around and then pausing. "Uhm… now which ways tha’ town?"

Julie scrunched up her face at Esben's retaliation. "Well ya walk slow!" she decided, despite his very, very valid points. That said, when Esben tried to argue her sleepiness, she only stuck her tongue out at him, as she rubbed her face and shook her head. She wasn't tired! She wasn't... not really.... kinda.... maybe. She took a big breath and puffed her cheeks out, but visibly struggled as she tried so hard to fight the yawn working its way into her lungs. She only settled from her defiance when it became clear that the thing they were searching for... wasn't around. She softened, her shoulders dropping as she looked around, and she reached up to grimace as she noticed some mud in her pigtails. "I 'unno..." she mumbled. She shifted, as if looking to get off Tria, but the pokemon started moving again, earning a gasp as the girl quickly caught herself.
"Um! Esby, I think Tria knows!" she concluded, holding onto the pokemon, before looking over as Tria came to a stop. Tria turned her head to look back at Esben, as if to confirm the point, before she side stepped a bit to open up the path to the boy. "D'you wanna come up fer... for the walk 'n stuff?" Julie asked, taking another deep breath to try and hide a yawn. Chico bounded over to follow, struggling through the mud, and cast a look at the boy like he very much did not want him up with his trainer. Flaaffa, meanwhile, continued to roll her way happily across the mud to (sort of) follow along, occasionally getting up only enough to correct her trajectory, before rolling again.

Honestly, if Esben could’ve puffed his cheeks out further, he would’ve. "So do you!" He snapped back, looking ready to fire more words in response, only to be distracted by Isi tugging on his pant leg. The Cubchoo looked rather concerned and could sense his trainer’s rising temper. There was a benefit to having a cool-headed pokemon on his team; it was probably that ice typing. Esben took a moment breath and calm himself. It didn’t do much, but at least he’d not waste more of his time arguing with Julie. There were more important matters to focus on!
That didn’t stop him returning a tongue stick out of his own in response to her tongue stick out. Attention was turned to their next course of action. Esben was quite alright to leave the area, the hairs on his back were still standing on end. Whether it was from the creeping cold or the still lingering uncertainty of the house, he wasn’t certain.
The boy craned his head to look up at Julie and Tria, squinting at the pastel-colored Rapidash. "Oh?" Admittedly, Tria seemed a rather wise pokemon. She tended Julie (and him, much to his chagrin) like a mother figure would (annoying as he found it) and seemed to have a fair bit of … knowledge? Maybe? Is that what you called it for a pokemon? He looked away, rubbing his chin in thought before finally giving a curt nod of agreement.
"Okay… but only so we can get movin’! ‘Cause yer pony still gots longer legs than me so," which was only half the truth. The other half was that his pants were mildly weighed down by the mud he’d collected in his own trek and it looked like this swamp went for quite some ways. Even if they made it back to the path quickly, that was still some extra weight he’d have to carry. That was just something he wasn’t up to right now. He looked at Julie and then to Tria, staring as if trying to silently communicate to the pokemon that he'd take the lift… if she would allow it.
"Plus ya might fall off if ya fall asleep so… I don’ want ya fallin’ on me!"

Esben was totally wrong and Julie totally knew it but she wasn't going to argue with him anymore. And not because she was tired, neither! She puffed out her cheeks at him, made faces, but that was about it. The sun was continuing to set, and the temperature was dropping, and Tria was bright and warm and she held on tightly to the equestrian pokemon. While Esben made up his mind about whether to get a ride or not, Tria kept her neck curved to watch him from the corner of her eye, making eye contact with him until he finally nodded. Julie had taken to rubbing her arms in the silence, and she scrunched up a bit at his reasoning, but didn't argue.
"C'mon then!" she ushered, as Tria shifted her weight, and moved to lay down so he could get up. The little girl gasped, grabbing on again to keep her balance -- it was a lot weirder being ON Tria when she did this! -- but held on, and recovered. "'M not gonna fall asleep! 'M not tired!" she insisted, but she offered her hands out to Esben to help him up on behind her. Once they were both settled, Tria stood, a bit quicker than usual though she was sure to help keep them balanced, and Chico reluctantly stood just to the side, ready to help however she could.
Despite Julie's claim, she stifled another yawn as Tria started to walk. "C'mon Mareepa!" she hollered at the pokemon, who was still rolling around. The special sheep perked up, and finally got to her feet, to waddle after them as Tria set them off towards the path leading into Lumiose City.
