Laverre Nature Trail, also known as Kalos Route 14, is the connecting route between Laverre and North Lumiose City. Near Lumiose gates is a playground and nursery for children, but further north into the forest is a marshy swampland due to the constant rain in the area. It is a rare habitat that people can frequently find goomy. There is a cabin to the northwest near Laverre where a man makes his residence and tells scary stories for tips.

Heading out into the swampy marshland, Reina steadily changed back into her normal clothes while listening to Miss Assistant explain the situation back at the agency. Sometimes these briefings turned into nothing more than an overly concerned citizen fretting over nothing, but as Miss Assistant continued it made Reina think more and more on Ra's predicament. Was this Pokemon trafficking more than just a problem in Kanto? It didn't sound good. Still, she wanted to continue keeping Ra a secret from Miss Assistant, the woman was already livid with Reina, no reason to sign her death warrant by opening that can of worms. "So the disappearing shiny Pokemon has become more frequent." Miss assistant nodded. "Yes, very much so. The International Police have sent a warning to every precinct. Recalling from memory as best she could, Miss Assistant continued briefing Reina with the Pokemon who'd been taken. The list was for the most part sporadic. It ranged from rare to common. Both trainer and owners, rich to poor... there was no set target to steal from. The only requirement seemed to be that the Pokemon had a rare colouration. "It reminds me so much of Nepherti's case." Reina spoke up. Gazing over to the Milotic. The poor creature had been exploited because of her unique scales. The scars she'd received from her captors were gone, but the mental scars were still present. To this day Nepherti flinches whenever someone touches her scales. The Milotic released a low cry. "These people must be stopped, there is no arguing that. Has there been any reports of someone coming into shiny Pokemon more frequently?" Miss Assistant shook her head. "If there are, we're not being told about it. The two officers from the IP that visited the agency seemed overly reluctant to even be telling me about the disappearances." If black markets selling wasn't an option. Then what entirely are these thieves planning on doing with the shiny Pokemon? Pokemon with unique colouration weren't any stronger than their average comparisons. They couldn't really display stolen Pokemon for public viewing, even to a private party as it appeared some of the Pokemon stolen were from some very influential people. The more she thought of it the more it hurt her head. Was it just a case of hoarding? Some a*****e getting his kicks off of caging up uncommon coloured Pokemon for only themselves to see? The thought of that made Reina even more angry. Greed is a terrible thing. One thing was for sure, whomever was stealing all these Pokemon... had the money and means to do so. Especially if none of their goons had been caught in the act yet. Which only dragged more questions to the table.
The sound of children playing drew Reina's attention upward. They were already at Lumiose city. She was eager to get back to the agency and look over the provided information with her own two eyes.

Julie scrunched up her face a bit in thought, but shook her head to Esben's question after she considered it some. No, there wasn't anything important that Torin had to do. Nothing that she knew about, at least. Maybe he'd gone to get some food or something -- she was getting kind of hungry -- but something happened on the way? Though the lady had said he wasn't alone when he left.... She frowned, somewhat missing Esben's confirming question that she had nothing to track, before they charged off in a search. This day had been fun, and she refused to let this all spoil everythingi, but she was definitely starting to feel tired and bothered by it all. And by the end, she was downright downtrodden.
She blinked, though, at Esben's demand, puffing her cheeks out a bit though her expression didn't otherwise change, almost like some kind of defense mechanism. She was thinking, though, and soon scrunched her nose up and moved her mouth off to one side, narrowing an eye as she looked at him. "Hmmmmmm...." she hummed thoughtfully. After a moment, though, she smiled, and reached over to poke Esben's cheek. "Okay! But no dragon's gonna eat ME, Esben! 'Cause I'ma outrun you!" she declared, before running for the entrance. Her smile faded to a small one as she ran, though. Much as she wanted to do just as he urged, there was still some concern in the back of her mind. But, he was right (besides the dragon thing)-- being upset wouldn't help. She had to buck up! She had to be DETERMINED to find Torin! And brave enough to do what it took to do so!

Esben huffed as his cheek was poked by Julie, narrowing that ever critical look of disapproval at the act. "You touch too much!" He declared, poking her back in the face in retaliation before heading past the entrance out the now defunct carnival.
"Well of course ya won’t! ‘Cause I’m tha’ best dragon slayin’ warrior around here!" He announced proudly, thumb pointed to his chest. He paused a few feet out and looked around, frowning some at the sights and smells. There was an unusually thick scent of decaying leaves and standing water that made his nose wrinkle in disgust. There was a small abandoned looking house located just past some of the unusually tall grass; it seemed rather… eerie compared to the carnival they’d just come from and Esben could feel the hair stand up on the back of his neck.
Still though, he didn’t let his unease show, instead spinning about to face Julie while a finger pointed to the house. "There! Maybe your brother went to tha’ house!" Esben glanced between the house and Julie again, an air of certainty to his claim. "We should go check! And you’ll see, he didn’ get all that far! So come on!" He took a moment to glance back at his team, seeing that they were all there (and catching Byr giving a loud sneeze as well) before turning his attention back to Julie expectantly. It was no dragon, but it was a start!

Julie only gave a toothy grin at the accusation that she "touched too much", which was unquestionably impossible, in her opinion. In fact, if anything, the claim only made her want to throw her arms around Esben in a knowingly irritating hug, but she refrained, because he was helping her, and.... honestly, he was the only person she had with her right now. "That doesn' mean yer the fastest runner!" she pointed out, and made to poke him again, but after a second, thought better of it and dropped her hand instead.
Like Esben, she turned and took a look around, her playful energy slowly melting away into the cold air around them. She perhaps wasn't quite as unnerved by the atmosphere that was wrapping itself around the two children, so much as she was sobered up by it, and a somber look came over her face again. She was distinctly aware of her brother's absence, the emptying area behind them as the carnival was closed up. There were some sounds of people shouting instructs and hurrying some dawdlers out, but it felt as though the voices were much further than they were. There was definitely something... off about this place, and she found herself turning her head and looking around at the shadows surrounding them, a bit more on guard than normal.
She blinked at Esben's exclamation, and looked over to the house she hadn't quite noticed before, somehow. Or perhaps she had, and was avidly avoiding it... If this area had a strange aura to it, that place personified the feeling ten fold. She stared a moment, but then looked back at Esben, a brief moment of uncertainty on her face. Very quickly, though, it turned into a bright smile, as she tried to shake the feeling, and go with reasoning instead! After all, while it wasn't something she would consciously think often, let alone say out loud, her brother did have.... reason, and a tendency, to slink off to isolated areas for a moment. Some spooky house just outside the carnival was just about perfect. Giving a hard nod of her head, she grabbed Esben's hand (completely forgetting his earlier declaration) and started towards the area. "C'mon! Le's go!" she agreed, and gave a nod back at her pokemon, glancing to them, too, hesitating only a second when she noticed Chico seemed to be moving a bit more slow than the others. Hopefully he wasn't scared of the house....
Tria seemed to notice his sluggishness as well, and gave the grass pokemon a gentle, careful nudge, before using her naturally long legs to walk up and keep beside the two kids.

Esben scoffed. "But it doesn’ mean I ain’ either!" He retorted with logic that only a child of his caliber could muster.He was prepared to swat her away again when he noticed movement akin to another poke, but untensed when she stopped, briefly grateful.
He waited impatiently for Julie to agree to the search, frowning as he took note of her changing demeanor at times. Was she really that upset that her brother had gone missing? She needed to toughen up! Then again, he could help but feel a few pangs of empathy somewhere in his own chest as he thought a little more about it. He sort of… missed his own family too. It was an uneasy though that he quickly shook off. There was no time for that right now.
Esben gave a triumphant grin as the girl conceded excitedly to his suggestion; he only had time to make a face as his hand was snatched, deciding that this was less invasive than being poked repeatedly at least, glancing back at his own team to assure that they were keeping up (Byr was still sneezing he noted and Chico didn’t look all that good too) before quickening his pace to follow and then pull ahead of Julie so that he was the one doing the dragging instead. "Yeh! Let’s go!"
While it wasn’t that great a distance, it certainly felt like a trip running through the grass and the muck, which seemed to get thicker and deeper the closer they got. Luckily they were able to hop onto the path that led up to the house for the remainder, which meant less much on the shoes. Esben let go of Julie’s hand once they were right on the porch, immediately climbing the stairs to the door. Bright blue-grey eyes studied the dilapidated wooden barrier, frowning in thought. He reached a fist up and beat on the door as hard as he could. "Hey! Anyone in there?!" He called loudly, listening for a response and receiving only eerie silence instead.
"Huh… I bet he’s hidin’." Esben commented, looking to Julie as though his statement were a fact that she should definitely affirm before he reached for the knob; he gave it a wiggle, to which is barely budged. With a grunt he pried a little more and slammed his weight against the door. That was just enough apparently and with a loud creak and groan it flung open, a strong wave of dank musty air escaping in the process. Esben picked himself up and swatted the dirt from his clothing, shooting a grin back to Julie. "C’mon Julie! It looks like we’ll have to search him out!"

Julie scrunched up her face a bit at the retort. That was true.... Obviously they'd have to race and find out! Which, given them, would probably happen on a few occasions. Plenty of time for her to prove she was the fastest! As if this time wouldn't be enough. She blinked, though, as he took the lead, but sped up her pace some to just travel a bit behind, so he wasn't so much as dragging her, as she was following his lead. Which was honestly probably a good thing-- it gave her a chance to shift her focus up to the building, since she could just follow Esben's lead now. There was something about the building, something... looming? She wasn't really sure what the word was, but it reminded her of the horror stories people would tell around campsites, and the ones Torin would tell her before he or his friends tried to scare her (which she would ALWAYS get them back for!).
She slowed with Esben as they reached the building, looking around at the doors and windows as a gust of wind swept through the swamp, tussling her hair a bit. She looked back up as Esben knocked. "Maybe," she replied thoughtfully, moving forward to try the door, "I dunno why he'd hide though." Maybe to try and scare them? He didn't know Esben enough to do that though... Or maybe he did? Sometimes he could be a bit of a jerk to people he didn't know, too. She moved aside to let Esben try the door when it didn't open easily, and blinked when he promptly busted it open with his weight, her eyebrows raising. "Whoa! Esben you're really strong!" she praised in amazement. She immediately scrunched her face up at the smell coming from the building, though, and lifted a hand up to cover her nose. Shaking it off, she nodded, hurrying forward, before pausing to look back at her pokemon. "Tria, I don' think you'll fit in here. Can you stay outside?" she asked of the fire pokemon, who was looking at the two anxiously. She bowed her head, but then leaned down, whinnying something softly to Chico, who looked up through bleary eyes. He nodded, then bounded forward, along with sheep mareep, who bustled past the two, unafraid, bleeting cheerfully as she disappeared into the darkness. "Uh! Hey wait up!" Julie quickly called, rushing past Esben to catch up to her pokemon. She stopped the moment she passed the light from outside. It was.... really dark in here.... "Uuhmm... Hey Esben, do you have a flashlight...?" she called uncertainly, not sure whether to be afraid or not. It was just a dark house in the middle of the swamp, after all... and her brother had only just gone missing.

Delighted, Esben couldn’t help but puff his chest out at the praise. "A’course! A warrior has’ta be strong!" He stated, grin widening a bit at the thought. Soon Julie would see that he was absolutely a true warrior and that he could teach her a thing or two. He’d teach all these kids a thing or two!
His attention shifted back to the house, having entered and begun his less than subtle scrounging about. The place didn’t look like any cabin he’d been in from his time; there were flower patterns on the wall that seemed to be peeling away from the humidity in the air. The counters were caked in thick layers of dust that didn’t look like they’d been disturbed in a rather long time. Chairs and tables and a musty as heck couch shoved off in the back corner of the living room. Shadows concealed a good portion of the kitchen and with some serious squinting, Esben could just make out what appeared to be stairs disappearing into even deeper shadows just beyond the living space.
All in all, creepy as this place should’ve felt, the young Viking found it grimier and grittier in feel and scrunched his nose as he swatted dust that had decided to collectively join the dried mud on his trousers. He blinked as Julie spoke, looking at her with a confused look. "A what?" He stared, head tilting a bit, "A flash… light? I can’t flash lights, that’s magic or something!" He rubbed his chin in though, looking around and then suddenly jumping a bit as a figurative light went off in his head. "We can make a torch! Yer horse has fire doesn’ she? We just need a stick!" He gave Julie a reassuring look to confirm if Tria would be willing to help, already peeking out the door to see if he could locate a suitable stick for this, spotting one just off the side of the path and immediately retrieving it.
"Here!" He thrusted the stick at Julie, still grinning. "Get yer pony to light this and then we can search for your brother better! "

Julie blinked, and slowly, one eyebrow lowered, as the other raised, and her head tilted ever so slightly to the side. Magic? Flashlights weren't magic. "You don' flash lights, Esben, you use 'em!" she clarified, giving a certain nod of her head. She curiously walked back over and followed Esben to the doorway, watching him fetch a stick after saying something about making a torch. She'd heard about those in some of the stories her family had read to her, too, but they usually had pitchforks with them...
"Doncha need to do somethin' to 'em though? Won't the fire just burn up the stick?" she asked curiously, taking the stick. She looked at it, then him, then at the stick again, and then to Tria, before shrugging and skipping her way down (until she hit the mud, at which point, skipping was hard to do). She held the stick up to Tria. "Tria! I needa torch! C'n ya light this for me?" she urged, smiling brightly up at the horse. The pokemon looked down warily, ebfore giving a shake of her head-- kids really shouldn't have fire. Julie's shoulders slumped in disappointment. "But we can't see..." she urged quietly. Tria sighed (as much as an equestrian pokemon could) and leaned down, letting her light the branch with the flames on her main. Julie brightened again, and moved the stick through the fire until it looked properly ablaze, before hurrying back to Esben, slowing when she noticed the flame flicker and threaten to go out. "C'mon Esben! Now we can see everything!" she encouraged, moving swiftly back into the house and brandishing the flame around to start investigating.

Esben stared blankly at Julie and her clarification, her words going over his head. "Why wouldn’ you flash the lights?" His brow furrowed further before just shaking off any further thought. Julie was clearly just speaking about something weird!
Having passed the stick over to Julie, Esben folded his arms over his chest, head shaking. "Nah! Well, not usually. If you wanna make it last longer you can tie a cloth to it and stuff but-" He started to mumble a bit, trying to assure he wasn’t missing anything. He was positive that he hadn’t forgotten anything about torch making (not that he was often allowed to but, you know, Julie didn’t need to know that) and instead focused on the girl and her flaming-pony.
A frown crossed his face as the pokemon seemed to refuse to light the stick at the girl’s request. Esben bristling a bit. Julie however, seemed to have a way with at least convincing her team and got the stick lit. He scoffed, thumbing his nose as she returned and glancing to his own team who still followed, a concern Isi carrying a chirping Flef while Byr attempted to not look afraid at the thought of entering the encroaching darkness again.
"Hey wait up!" The young Viking huffed as Julie a rushed ahead, immediately stumbling after her. He coughed a bit as the dust was kicked up, coming to a halt next to her with a frown. "Don’t go running with it, you’ll put it out!" He scolded, pointing to the torch. Glancing around the room again he tilted his head a bit before looking back to Julie. "So where would be go? This place ain’ all that big," Esben pointed to the stairs. "I bet he went up there! Let’s go!" He remarked, beginning to make his way over. It was…. Way too dark to see the landing above. "Here, lemme carry the torch!"

With an expression as blank as the one Esben was giving her, Julie stared back at the boy, before furrowing her brow and squinting her eyes, like maybe she could read if he was joking that way. After a long moment of the two staring at each other, she pulled back, raised an eyebrow, and widened an eye, before deciding to just... not pursue that. Esben sure was a weird kid.
It was fine that Esben started mumbling his protests to her question about making torches, since Julie pretty much lost the conversation the moment she had looked the stick over, and decided to go with the plan. She was pretty much already out the door when he trailed off, and soon returned with the flaming stick, bustling into the building. "I'm not gonna let it go out Esben!" she called back, looking around. She blinked when Esben decided on a direction before she could even give any feedback and looked over. Her nose scrunched up as he demanded the torch though. "Nuh! My pony lit it so I'ma carry it!" she decided, before grinning, "Yer gonna have to follow ME!" With that, she ran up the stairs, but slowed a bit as the fire flickered and swept low. She slowed more as she neared the top of the stairs, adjusting the stick in her hands-- it was starting to burn its way closer to her fingers, and hot, burnt up remains were falling to the ground. As she looked up, though, a huge set of glowing eyes met her, with a large tongue lolling out of a purple-teethed mouth. Screaming in surprise, she dropped the torch, and nearly fell back down the stairs, the stick flickering and nearly going out as it landed on the ground, wavering as if it were deciding what else it could set on fire.

It was a good thing it was dark, as Esben couldn’t stop the tint of red that crossed his freckled cheeks as Julie denied him the torch. The nerve! He was the warrior here! And… and… and it was the warrior leader who got to hold the torch!
"Hey!" He called, stamping a boot down in defiance. When that him nowhere, as Julie had already rushed up the stairs, he huffed and shot a glare back at the pokemon before giving chase. What he didn’t expect was for Julie to scream and the torch to hit the floor.
Immediately, a chill ran down his spine and on instinct he pulled his axe from its sling to wield in one hand as he scrambled up the last few steps to stand just behind her.
"What happened?!" He shouted (which was a bit unnecessary it wasn’t like the girl was all that far away) as he scooped up the torch to keep it from consuming the place and taking them with it. If there was one thing Esben did know it was that fire was not to be taken lightly and it liked to burn things down. He turned to look in the same direction as Julie, blinking and staring at the strange floating purple pokemon.
Esben blinked. Confused.
"What… what is that?" Ghosts weren’t something he knew a lot about. Dragons? Of course! Ghost… no. You didn’t mess with ghosts. Which is probably why he became more confused as the Haunter’s tongue flickered and lulled and the pokemon did flips in the air before the children, clearly… delighted? Thrilled? Trying to scare them? Who even really knew. All the same, Esben tightened his grip on his axe, ready to defend himself and Julie if needed!

Julie didn't flinch at Esben's loud holler as he came up the stairs, instead her focus remaining on the haunter, her mouth agape and her eyes round. She wasn't scared, but it had sort of caught her off guard. Bounding behind Esben, Chico quickly struggled his way up the stairs and leaped to her sides, vines slithering out as he sneezed, but glared defiantly at the pokemon all the same. "Hey!" Finally getting herself together, Julie hopped back to her feet, recognizing the pokemon, "It's a Gengar!" .... Sort of.
The haunter blinked. "Haun...." Julie tilted her head to the side. "Or uh... Haun... Haunter?" she tried correcting herself, uncertain. She looked at Esben with interest. "Maybe it knows where my brother is!" Without waiting for a response, she quickly turned and popped her bright blue gaze back over to the ghost pokemon, who looked thoroughly befuddled at the complete lack of fear on these children. "Hey! Have you seen my brother?? Did he come in here???" she asked eagerly. Her attention was so focused on the pokemon, she didn't seem to notice a few other ghost pokemons peering in curiously, and a wicked, mischievous grin being exchanged between a few.
