With a grimace, Naani made her way through the rocky terrain she'd found herself in. A part of her mood did have to do with her choice in alone-time-spot for today, but it largely had to do with the events of the day.
Sometimes the more nosy, gossipy sections of the pride bothered her. There were days where they'd chitter about the new rogues and try to reaffirm their bias about them, or days where she could hear them questioning why her family allowed Imani into their fold, or days where they whispered about Naani herself. Today had been one of the later, and she growled a bit at how that still followed her. She would never be rid of that guilt, it felt like. What could she possibly do to make up for her actions?
Even well into adulthood, Naani still blamed herself. She didn't need others adding to it.
With a forlorn sigh, the lioness stopped to look up at the sky. Sometimes she looked back at it, pinpointing the moment that she'd made that mistake of a challenge, and wondered what would have happened had she gone in as well, had she gone in and stopped him. But she'd been a coward.
No more. She didn't want to be a coward anymore.

So into her musing that the lioness didn't even notice the sudden silence, the other animals having sensed a predator hunting, and it wasn't until the sound of rocks tumbling finally registered in her ears that she realized that she wasn't alone.
Her first reaction, first thought, was that it was one of her pride mates, come to bother her during her alone time, and Naani scowled as she turned to tell them off.
Her next reaction was of shock - she'd only seen a few hyena before in passing, and never one that was heading right for her. Unfortunately, she didn't have time to react beyond that.
The Di-anyi tried to dive out of the way but it wasn't in time. Instead, all she accomplished was a yelp as the hyena barreled into her.

The lioness was oblivious to his descent which made Furtchlos grin. Good. The element of surprise was essential to a good attack. He picked up the pace with each leap, using the hill he was running down to propel him towards his target faster, and by the time the lioness spotted him it was far, far too late.
He gave one final pounce once he was close enough, rocketing towards the lioness with all of his might. He slammed into her, his skull smacking into the side of her head, shoulder hitting her neck, paws against her shoulder. He was smaller than her but he was sturdy and large for a male with no sense of danger where he himself was concerned. Pain only fueled him and the ache in his own head had him in a frenzy before they even hit the ground.
Los wasted in time in tearing into the blue fur of her pelt, biting whatever he could get his mouth around. Usually he ate what the lions in his pride had already killed so it was rare to have something alive and kicking still. Normally he'd hunt his prey until it was too tired to defend itself, then simply eat it while it lay there, still alive. This lioness would pose a bigger problem since he didn't hunt lions, persay, but she was all he had at the moment.

The initial hit left her disoriented and there was no escaping the sudden onslaught of bites. All she could do was scream and try to buck him off. Pain flared across her side as he tore into it, and he was getting dangerously close to her neck.... Instinct kicked in then, and Naani coiled herself inwards in an attempt to shield her throat from a killing blow.
Unfortunately, that put her face a little too close to his teeth.
Blood had never really bothered her before - it wouldn't do to have a Di-anyi that couldn't be around it, after all - but this was different. This was hers, and it blinded her sight as it raced down the side of her face. She wasn't sure where the wound was, nor did she care to check right now.
No, all she felt was panic. What had she done? Why was this... this creature attacking her?! Naani tried to scramble out of the way, tried to say something, but nothing came to mind other than panicked sobbing. She didn't understand, and it was quickly becoming apparent that she just just needed to do something to defend herself.
Naani overbalanced and fell sideways then, and it was as she realized that her stomach would become exposed that she finally reacted. Putting as much fury and frustration into her actions, she kicked up at him. For a small lioness, she had one hell of a kick, and managed to launch the hyena into the air.
Not caring where he landed, she stumbled to her paws and then let out a roar, as loud as she could muster after all her screaming. With luck, a patrol would hear her (assuming they hadn't already).

Los was having himself a grand ol' time. This lioness was putting up very little fight and if he continued to overpower her like this it would only be a matter of time until he could eat. Blood coated his tongue and teeth and maw, giving him a frightening appearance on top of the already intense look in his eyes. The lioness fell to the ground, giving him the perfect opportunity to tear into her belly and start to feast, to lay the killing blow while still letting her live a bit longer-
Crack
Los went sailing into the air a few feet before hitting the ground, his jaw aching from the kick and head spinning as he tried to orient himself. The roar that followed made his ears press back against his skull and he got to his feet slowly, dizzy and disoriented. He worked his jaw a few times to ensure nothing was broken - no, thankfully - and he lowered his head while the pain fueled his frenzy.
In the distance he could hear roars indicating the lioness had been heard, but he knew he'd still have a few more moments to make good on his kill. Once more he launched himself at the lioness, jaws wide, ready to latch on to whatever he could and not let go. He still had the upper hand for the moment, but once those other lions showed up he'd have to beat a hasty retreat.
MangoMeow Def thought I replied to this. Sorry for the wait!

Blood obscuring her vision, Naani only vaguely registered the answering roars but didn't have the time to feel relieved. The hyena was quickly getting to his paws again, and, reacting almost blindly, the lioness scrambled to get away as he launched himself back at her. Where could she go? What could she do?! She had to buy time for help to arrive....
Later, she would reflect on how lucky she was... and how grateful she was for adrenaline, because surely she wouldn't have managed this otherwise. The tree was bare in front of her, hardly more than a long stump of wood, but it was all she had to work with. With a sob, she clawed her way up, slipping every other paw step up but still managing to pull herself onto the tree.
Not quite in time, as she yowled as her tail was caught in unforgiving jaws. Still, she didn't let that stop her from latching on for dear life.
In the distance, she could hear the fast approach of her pridemates....
