Oh hell.

It was hot. The air was dry, and the sun was merciless. This was nothing new. There was a lingering silence. The wind was light, kicking up the sand every once in a while and whistling through dry brush even more infrequently.

Tazka had only recently arrived at the Western Outpost. It had only been a small amount of time, and somehow trouble already manage to find her.

The guard knew what to expect from patrols here. Lost wanderers would be directed back towards the savannah. Some most stubborn ones would be directed with a bit more force. Those who were worthy of a duel to prove their worth would be given one. It was pretty standard.

She knew her duties. So when a strange smell came through the air, she went to check it out. When the source of the smell turned out to be a pair of stubborn hyenas as opposed to more complacent rogue lions, Tazka bristled and chased them off. She had given a roar, both as a warning to the strangers and a call for any nearby guards, but the creatures had been quick to tuck tail and make it out, but not before making her life more difficult than she had wanted.
Tazka didn't really remember the details. She exchanged a few blows—nothing serious or unexpected—but it was in the final giving chase that something had went not quite right. The hyenas were gone, but somewhere in chasing them out of a rocky outcropping, a rock slipped out from beneath her. The sand had been looser than she imagined and had given way under the weight. Luckily for her, the loud noise and sudden movement seemed to drive off the hyenas. Not quite so lucky: landing amongst the rocks, piled beneath an outcropping, had done some damage to a front limb. It wasn't broken, she didn't think, but it certainly wasn't easy to walk. She bled, not profusely, but any amount of blood was more than she would have liked. 'Blood belongs inside the body', her medic 'friend' would have told her with a cheeky smile. She hoped Hati wasn't the medic that was going to be helping her with this. She'd never live it down.

In true, stubborn Firekin fashion, Tazka resisted the urge to call for help. Though she might have been a good trek to the main part of the outpost at this point (probably the whole evening's worth of travel, at this point), sun and sands be damned if she was going to cry for assistance unless she really needed it. Besides, she didn't want to alert those crummy hyena to the fact that she was in distress. She was easy pickings, as it were. No, she'd have to do this the hard way.

It was going to be a long afternoon.

It was the first roar that had drawn his attention. Ever alert, Synne had been making rounds along the outskirts between their outpost and the less visible spots to the next, when the sound carried through the still, warm air of the desert. He thought he could make a guess at who it was by the timbre alone and, loyal and obedient as he liked to present himself, he righted his path immediately and headed in the direction he had heard her last. She wasn't making it easy to catch up, though.

The smell that had drawn her lingered in the air but Synne saw no sign of her or whatever ruckus had caused her to sound an alarm. He simply followed the path as best he could, tracing the imprints in the sand with curious eyes. Unlike earth, dry sand was bad for information - each print was a hollow indent in the dunes and nothing more. There were relative size differences and a spattering that suggested that she had not been alone but, otherwise, nothing.

It was only with the scent of blood hanging in the air that he began to really grow alarmed.

The sound of the crash was his only clue and, worry now spurring his step, he leaped forward through the sands with every intention that this might lead him headlong into a battle with an enemy he didn't know. His face was fierce as he rounded a corner and found his paws beating across sands peppered with stones now, hard and unpleasant as his pads found the edges. The smell of blood was stronger and, at last, he found her.

"Are you okay?" was the immediate question as he pulled back on his momentum, slowing down so that he pause at her side. Clearly she had injured herself, any fool could see that. Knowing she was weak and knowing that it was prime for an attacker to make a second strike, he looked up and past her to the outcropping she had clearly left behind. There was no sign of anyone but that didn't mean they were safe. "Is there any immediate danger?"
