Well, Agni-pariksha was down a daughter and now in a bad mood leading up to the departure of the foray. There was only one thing on her mind now when she should have been handling last minute details of the outing with the Magistrates who were leading the group, so she was ignoring her responsibility to her pride and was focusing on her responsibility to her family. Turiya had given her some insight on gaps that she had left in raising her daughters, she could find Bahudama and Katranak later but it was very important that she speak to Atyadhik before she left and tried to pull any of the same s**t that her sister did.

Honestly, Atyadhik would have been Agni's first guess at a problem child for something like this. That Turiya jumped right ahead was a concern.

She spotted her daughter in the crowd getting ready to leave the desert, marched right up and pulled Atyadhik from the crowd so they could speak privately. At least for now, they had that luxury. But she didn't speak immediately, even after the very unsubtle removal of her daughter from earshot of the others. Her first move, instead, was to give her daughter a good, hard look up and down.

Atyadhik was, well, antsy for lack of a better term. Some kind of mix of excited and--while she'd never admit it--nervous. This would be her first time going further beyond their lands than the outpost, and investigating the Nergui too! All anyone ever seemed to pay attention to was her sire, and she herself was often focused on proving herself very much Firekin, but her heritage was Hongshan too. She definitely wanted to find out more about the lions that had forced her ancestors to flee here. Maybe she'd get a chance to remind them that their enemies were still very much alive. A real fight, not just sparring!

All of that quickly took a back seat in her mind as the Regent--her mother--marched up and pulled her away from the others. What the hell was going on? She didn't get much of a chance to speak until they were out of earshot. By then, she'd noticed that she was being given a Look. She wasn't sure what the Look meant, but it didn't seem far off from the kind of Look she got when she was in trouble. But...she hadn't done anything. She thought. So what gives?

"Why the hell are you looking at me like that, Mom?"

She seemed to be waiting for her daughter to speak first, and didn't hesitate to give her a completely honest answer as soon as she asked, though she was still giving her a look.

"Turiya is not going with you," she said, "I kicked her out of the desert for trying to make some bullshit statement by breaking the rules."

Agni knew she was wording it to emphasize how much it paralleled her own choices in the past, but that was exactly the point. It was important that her children knew they were not in a position to pull the kind of stunt she once had. It was also equally important to convey that Agni herself was the one who evicted her daughter. There was more to say, of course, but those were the most important things to get out right away.

"You what?!" Atya's outburst was immediate, and she raised one paw as if to take a step back before changing her mind and setting it down again firmly. Her mind raced to think of the kind of things Turiya could have gotten herself "kicked out" for. Bullshit statement, huh? That narrowed it down some, but not enough for her to figure it out yet. Last she knew, Turiya had been spending a lot of time at the Outpost. Had she pissed off their neighbors somehow?

"What the ******** did she do?"

"Turiya went to the Bonelands looking for a sire for cubs," Agni answered grimly, grinding her teeth a bit at the frustration of basically explaining what she herself had done, too, before continuing, "She chose Umholi Umkhombo, whose fur is brown."

The Regent was interested to know how much her daughters talked to each other, she watched for signs that Atya might have known this would happen.. she had yet to tell Bahudama or Katranak, it was far more important to talk to Atyadhik first, before she left and tried anything funny while they were outside the desert.

Atya's confusion only deepened at first...until it cleared. Mostly. But things weren't quite coming together. "So you're saying she did what you did...but she picked wrong, so she gets kicked out? Isn't that a little, I don't know, frigging harsh? It's not like she laid down for just anyone...any more than you did."

Atya knew the last bit was a low blow as soon as the words left her mouth, and she braced herself--but she wasn't backing down. She was going to understand this, dammit.

Agni's expression didn't change as Atya said exactly what she was thinking, what no doubt everybody would be thinking when word made it around the pride. That was the reason she had to be so "harsh" about this, there would be traditionalists who would condemn the whole practice based on one foolish lioness mimicking the Regent in the worst way.

"That's exactly what I'm saying," she said, not bothering to address the attempted insults, "Umkhombo may be big and strong, and he may fight to keep control of his pride every day, but he could not ever be a Firekin. And that is a big ******** deal, whatever Turiya thinks."

Whatever you think, she added mentally, narrowing her eyes.

"I will deal with Turiya later, I'm here now to make sure you don't have it in your fool head to pull something like that too just because of how I got you brats into this world."

Atya knew full well how much that kind of thing could matter to the more traditionalist members of the pride. They'd probably make Turiya's poor decision out to be some kind of...failing of the blood, or something. A possible reason to rescind the seeking of outside sires and dams with which to carry on the Firekin lines.

Her muzzle twisted as Agni got around to the heart of the reason she was here. "I'm not giving them a reason to exile me, mom," she growled. She had bitches to prove wrong, after all.

And even if she slipped...she'd take the secret to her grave.

Agni could practically hear what was going through Atyadhik's mind when she growled at her. There was a way to do it that didn't involve making exceptions for the naturally-colored boy next door, if this did nothing but tell Atya that she had to keep her trap shut if she did something like this, that would be enough. A high frequency of huria would call the judgement of their lionesses into question and bring up questions of whether this approach was accomplishing what it intended.. but those political discussions weren't the point today.

"Good," she said, "Being my daughter doesn't put you above the rules, you all should already be familiar with how it makes you more vulnerable to criticism, not less."

And that was why Turiya had to be handled harshly. How harshly remained to be seen but this was as much as Atya needed to know right now.

"Good luck out there," she said, "Don't do anything stupid."
