There would be an excursion soon, a foray out into the rogue lands. Atyadhik was looking forward to it, as it would mean a chance to prove herself good enough to become a Sentinel. It didn't hurt that she was passingly familiar with Ud, as he'd been one of the lions tasked with keeping her safe as a cub. He wouldn't be bad to work under, since she already knew he had no issue with her or her...heritage. Not everyone was so accomodating.

But she wasn't going anywhere just yet. For now, she was training. She rolled her shoulders and stretched slowly, sweeping a speculative eye over those that seemed to be looking for a sparring partner.

Wakali wasn't exactly enthusiastic about the need to take a trip to the training grounds. He was pretty sure he got plenty of practice killing things when hunting but it was technically a rule that all Firekin know how to fight and he was.. overdue for some practice. Sitting at the edge of the grounds looking grumpy, he watched and waited for something that never seemed to come. He noticed Atyadhik prowling for a partner but he didn't give her any thought at all.

He was starting to think he had come all this way out here for nothing.

Atya paused, golden eyes narrowing as she really noticed Wakali. The male was obviously waiting, but acted as though he hadn't even seen her. It was possible, even plausible, that he was waiting for someone specific. It was also possible that he was snubbing her as a potential sparring partner. Well, she wasn't going to sit around and wait for someone else to walk up to her. She had s**t to do today. If he was one of those lions, even better. She liked knocking those around.

She strode up to him, deliberately standing in front of the sour-looking lion. "Need someone to train with?"

Even as Atyadhik spotted him (he rolled his eyes, thankfully when she she was still too far away to see it) and started to head towards him, he seemed to be look anywhere but directly at her. In the back of his mind, Wakali did spare a thought about how to get out of this but another part of him thought this was fine, he didn't need to get worked up just like he didn't really need to pay any attention to her.

Getting right into his face didn't make him feel any kinder, either.

"Why?" he asked, "Have you see anybody?"

If there was any doubt in Atya's mind that he was deliberately snubbing her, it vanished as he tried to look everywhere but at her. Her blood was already beginning to boil, but she restrained herself. Right now, he was just acting stupid. She could deal with stupid.

"Wow, you look pretty good for your age if you can't see!" Her grin was barbed as she needled at him with the backhanded 'compliment.' "I'm standing right here, old man. Think you can keep up?" One paw gestured at the ring.

Wakali rolled his eyes again, and this time she was close enough to see. He sneered, her grin at how clever she was grating his nerves more than her existence or her decision to get up into his face. He got himself up, shook the sand out of his fur and stared her down, knowing exactly what he was doing when he spoke.

"Think you can handle a real Firekin?"

The snarl that followed those words was blood-curdling.

If looks could kill, Wakali would be a smoking pile of ashes mingling with the sand. Atya had done her time. She'd fought and won her duel. She'd proven herself just as Firekin as any of them. But traditionalist dicks like this one demanded she keep proving herself, again and again and again. And she'd keep on doing it until they shut up.

"We'll find out," she grated in a low growl. "On the sands, a*****e."

He could clearly see the death in her eyes but, unsurprisingly, he found it funny. He might still believe the same things but he wouldn't say it so much if it didn't get exactly this kind of reaction, she was feeding into her own problem and it had very little to do with him at all. That was his logic, at least. He shrugged and walked out to where they would have more room, and he waited.

"If you're sure," he said, nodding, "Ladies first."

Wakali's tone did not suggest he was being a gentleman but still, naturally, condescending.

Roll 1: Bide/Glancing Blow
Total: 2

The striped lioness growled again and dropped into a fighting stance, circling the male as she sized him up. For all her fury, Atya wasn't yet past the point of thinking. Wakali outsized her and had a protective mane besides, so she'd have to fight smarter and faster instead of trying for a brute-strength win. She didn't recognize him as a soldier, but that might not mean anything. This was a big pride and she wasn't familiar with everyone, not by a long stretch.

She pounced forward to lash out with what turned out to be a glancing blow.

Wakali didn't move as she circled and sized him up. He didn't particularly care. In a duel, he remembered, there was really only one first move and that was to charge forward. He was out of practice but he was still adept enough to dodge- mostly- and she barely touched him. He was still smiling as he reached out a heavy paw to push her away from him.. and stumbled forward when it failed to connect with anything at all.

It wasn't that bad of a start..

Atya didn't hide a nasty grin as she sidestepped Wakali's attempt at a shove. She didn't bother goading him with her words, though. Words started this s**t, but actions ended it. Her claws would be all the mocking she needed for now.

She came in and reached out for another glancing hit--more of a slap, really. It wasn't the proper a**-beating she longed to dole out, not yet, but the time wasn't right.

He missed and lost his footing but he still managed to avoid the full force of her incoming blow. Wakali was doing decently well but he wasn't really trying, either. For her, though, there was no winning in his mind whether or not she was trying right now. If she was, she was failing. If she wasn't, she wasn't making much of a point.

Deciding to go for the predictable and try to correct for his error last time, he reached out again- he didn't miss, but it was more of a swat than a proper hit, too.

Better, at least.

Atya shrugged off the swatting hit, her face making it plain she was unimpressed. Her anger was becoming tinged with annoyance--he talked as though he could discern a 'real' Firekin and this was the best he could muster? He was laughable.

Her next swing went wide, or he was too fast, but either way she hit only air and stumbled slightly. Served her right; she'd been starting to get cocky. Focus, Atyadhik.

A quick step backward was enough to assure he was out of the way of a very poorly aimed strike. Though he was tempted to try again, he knew better than to aim another poorly planned attack. Instead, he used this opportunity to put a bit of distance between them and start circling to see if he could spot a better chance.

"You don't look impressed," he said, "But I'm an out of practice hunter. You're a soldier, aren't you? What's your excuse?"

Wakali was very much asking for trouble, now more than ever.. but he was just that confident. And the more frustrated she got, the less effective she would be. She made it so easy.

This guy really, really needed to keep his damn mouth shut. All he was doing was making Atya want to hit him. If that was his goal, great! Mission accomplished. Good job, Wakali, you're very good at being punchable. Talk s**t, get hit.

She gathered herself and charged, putting her full power into the strike. Win or lose, it was terribly satisfying to make solid contact.
