Ziarre sniffed the air near the strange lake, frowning. In all of her years, she'd never seen anything like it. It certainly didn't look safe to drink, so it was a good thing the Reaver band she and Kucha were with weren't in dire need of water. She glanced back toward her daughter and the rim of the crater, then back to the "lake."

"What do you think?" Ziarre had her own opinion on this, of course, which was that it was ******** weird. But testing her offspring was an old habit.

---

Kucha furrowed her brow but said nothing for several moments. Just as it seemed that she might not answer, she spoke. "This place seems…almost unnatural. I don't like it." The pale lioness shook her head, staring at the "water." It looked like no water she'd ever seen. And it smelled like no water she'd known, either. She wrinkled her nose at the odor. "It stinks."

There were an unusual amount of bone-marked adolescents within the viking band. If they were dark, and they had bones on their pelts, they were likely related. Mitama was the only dark daughter with a white hair tuft. Her braid was sloppily put together, and her appearance a little unkempt. The group had been travelling for quite some time - far longer than the female had bargained for. While some of the trip had been interesting, she found herself wanting to go home back to their beautiful home lands.

Being struck by a terrible famine only made them that much more beautiful. Littered by death, caressed by silence. Out here there was a lot of talking and grumbling, but the young lioness hoped to see a lot more death in the future. As long as her sisters and brothers were okay, the world around her could turn into rotted, decrepit corpses.

The group had stumbled upon a lake, though Mitama did not think it could exactly be called that. The water was very dark, and it smelled. She lifted her head, sniffing the air around her curiously. It smelt nasty! Not quite like death, but enough to have the young adolescent's curiosity. Most of the lions were hanging back, having decided that it clearly wasn't something worth their time.

Mitama's curiosity, however, drew her in. She thought she saw something move underneath the water's surface. No, something surely spoke! As if knowing someone would try to stop her, she glanced nervously around, waiting until her siblings were distracted before she made her way to the edge of the water. Down, down, and down she looked, searching for what she was convinced she saw.

Then, the earth underneath her crumbled, and she disappeared.

---

The viking had gone fairly normal, at least that was what Gatito had expected it to go. He had never been on one before, though his mother had suggested that he go with her and her father on numerous occasions. The only issue was that he did not want to fall under their critical gaze. It was all too easy to mess up around them and make a fool out of himself. No, this was the way to go. Go out on his own and prove himself to everyone...

...and then his siblings had joined him. Gatito had groaned and moaned through most of the trip over the appearance of his family. Yes, he loved them, but they already lived together at home! He saw them every day! The nail on the coffin was that Mitama had decided to come along for some storm lord awful reason. She needed constant surveillance. At times his sister could be completely unaware of her surroundings.

Now they were in a place that just oozed temptation for a curious lion, and he had his blue eyes settled on Mitama. "Don't go near it, it doesn't look safe," he warned his sister sourly.

He wasn't even sure that she heard him.

Suddenly, a breeze brushed over his right ear alone, and he heard an incoherent voice, soft and sweet caressing over him. A chill ran down his spine, and he quickly turned to face whomever had tried to spook him. "Who said that!?" There was no one beside him, no one who could have said anything.

Shaking his head, he turned his gaze back to his sister, "Come on, Mitama, let's -"

His eyes widened as he saw his sister at the edge of the lake. Only for a split second did he see her, because in the next instant he saw the ground give way and his sister tumble over the edge. She disappeared. "MITAMA!"

Going on a Viking, a viking, a viking! Going on a vikingggg. Wait. What was this? The spiny male stared at the lake before them. He eyed his sibling, and the older adults that they were able to join on this mission. He frowned shaking his head. "What a weird place."

Rukayo stood next to his siblings. The rustling of sounds that sounded like a voice echoed in his ear. He froze. "What was that?" He asked out loud, looking around for the sound. It wasn't of any of the members he had heard so far. "Someone playing some kind of cruel joke or what?" he growled.

"Mitama!" He shouted, watching his sister disappear with the crumbling Earth. "Gatito, go get her!" He shouted at his brother, finding himself unable to move.

Ciro didn't expect to go on a Viking so soon, but with the strange events going on in the sky, he couldn't help but offer himself as Captain to lead the band. He was saddled once again, with unfamiliar faces. Lovely faces, those adults were, but then again, there were also more children (well adolescents,). He remembered his last outing quite clearly, and how it did not go according to plan.

Hopefully, with the adults, the Raid wouldn't go completely wrong.

They neared a strange lake. Ciro frowned. "Don't get too close to it." But it seemed his words were too late, as the form of the dark adolescent female went tumbling in.

"s**t." He growled. Her form had disappeared, yet he found himself not getting any closer.

Die 1: Bahamut ; Die 2: Dharma'dido

The time had come, finally, Bahamut was destined for the borders among many other thriving adolescents. They were destined to begin their first ever viking abroad. Bahamut spent days leading up to this moment preparing himself, primarily he wandered around confused and unsure of how adults spent their time leading up to leaving for a trip. Most of them seemed to enjoy a drink, or disappear into dens. Neither appealed to him at the moment and so wandering seemed to be just fine.

The morning had come quickly. He rose with the sun and was off to join the viking band as soon as he could get moving.

"Morning." He mumbled to his sister and a couple others, including a stark green lion that had some odd markings. "Dharma.. isn't it?" He queried the lion casually though Dharma seemed perplexed by something on his left paw. "What is wrong with you?" His brow furrowed and he shook a few strands of his mane from his face which tossed his braid about.

---

"The mud." He remarked coolly as he shook his paw. Dharma'dido had woken up early to tend to his pelt and very nearly didn't make the time to leave because of it. "I was clean, properly groomed and here this puddle has made it's way between my toes." The disgust in his voice was firm, this wasn't a fake out.

While he tended to his paw, completely ignoring his company, he hummed softly. They were going out on their first viking today! Which would be far more exciting if it wasn't so messy.. He recalled his first attempt at the borders, something which ended up at a dead end because of his personal issues. Today he would surpass them, succeed at producing something to bring back and eventually return home to the comforts of his tidy den.

"What do you think we'll find today?" The question was posed to the male, Bahamut.

---

A weird look wasn't enough to describe the way Bahamut glanced at the basically female lion he stood next too. The travelling had been rough, but what they found seemed to be worse. He had discovered his sister travelled with them, a pleasant surprise and one he looked forward to enjoying soon - her company was always so refreshing with her extraordinary take on the world.

"Mitama!" Of course she was near the water, what was she doing..

His eyes widened as he witnessed her begin to tilt, that was when his bright blue eyes caught a movement below them. "What was that.." Everything seemed to slow down, he didn't realize that his sister managed to drag him down with her. They were headed towards the dark waters, a shadow waited for him down there. Did Mitama see it too? All was lost for him as he tumbled.. something that felt like it was going on for ever.

---

"Oh hell no."

The response was quick from Dharma'dido as he witnessed the tragedy of two beautifully clean adolescents drop from the ledge of the 'dirty lake' and disappear. He barely reached the edge before stepping away. "Well that's it. They're dead - who were the parents?" Dharma spoke up, but in a hushed sort of tone as he backed away.

After their prior foray into the roguelands, Svana and Valkyrie had not yet been keen to leave the pride again. That all changed with the constant hunger, a curse of some sort, and now they were out again, avoiding the starvation. It was not condusive to one's happiness, after all. The newest excursion had led them to a new land feature, not present in their last journey, a huge lake created by the ground itself opening up. She peeked at it, ears folded back. "I don't like this place..." One ear twitched, shifting forward. She swore she could hear somebody whispering, but words were hard to decipher. Turning her head, the black-maned lioness glared at nothing in particular. "This place gives me the creeps."

One grey ear shifted before Valkyrie looked at Svana. "Oh, it's not that bad! It's... Interesting." She tried to peek at the water, only to wrinkle her nose. Interesting, yes, good smelling, no. The disgusting looking water made her skin crawl just looking at it, and she worried about what might be in it. Were there monsters? Or did actual fish survive in it? Would anybody DIE if they fell in? The question was, partially, answered when two other lions fell in. They both managed to not fall in, and Valkyrie couldn't help smiling for them... Up until she stepped wrong and the ground crumbled beneath her. "AAH!"

"VALKYRIE!" Moving as quick as she could, Svana dove toward the edge.

She had managed to grab hold of the rocks and dirt on the side of the steep drop, and she hung there for a few precious moments, hanging, clinging desperately. It was in the following moments that she realized she was not alone, that she had managed to snag her paw on her brother and draw him down towards the inky depths with her. Her grip was precarious, and Mitama could feel herself slipping. Her tail sunk into the water, and she hissed at a sudden burning sensation.

"Bahamut, are you crazy?" she asked. It was one thing for her to get hurt, it was another for her to drag her siblings into it. In the distance, she heard her other brothers call out for them. Surely, in a moment they would be rescued. They would not be left hanging above a lake whose depths could not be revealed.

These thoughts passed through her mind in a matter of seconds. Bahamut slipped, and her grip on the side of the dirt drop was lost. She fell backwards with a panicked yelp and was gone. The water splashed as the two teens broke the surface.

And then there was nothing.

---

Panic shook him to the core as he not only Mitama disappeared, but Bahamut as well. s**t! He had expected Mitama to be a little careless, but to see Bahamut go down with her chilled him to his core. He could not imagine losing any sibling, let alone two, and somehow and for some reason this felt very bad.

Rukayo's voice snapped him straight out of his stupor, and suddenly he could move again. The young adolescent charged straight for the lake, unwilling to stand by and watch as his siblings plunged into danger. "Hold on, guys!" Even if a sensible adult tried to stop him, no one would be able to. To Gatito, family was everything. He could not return home without two of his siblings - his parents would kill him!

"Mitama, Bahamut! Hold -" He made it to the edge of the lake and looked down only to see the ripple of water.

His heart sank into his stomach, mind whirling with thoughts of how to salvage the situation. "s**t, s**t." He had to go after them, it had been a few long seconds and he did not see either pop up to the surface. With a growl Gatito backed up a few steps, tightening his muscles and preparing himself for a dive to save his beloved siblings.

By the Storm Lords, he hated water too.

"Come on guys, make it back up..."

With sheer luck and determination, Valkyrie clung to the wall of the banks, claws sunk into the soil. She had slid, only to finally come to a stop near the bottom, her tail only just brushing the water. Pale eyes glanced at it, before flicking the tail up and away, her nose wrinkling again. "Oh that's gross..." She grunted, climbing back up. "Svana... Svana, this water's disgusting! Don't go swimming in it!"

Edging as close as she dared, Svana peaked at the water. "I'll say..." She glanced at her mate, then made a face. "Your tail hair's starting to fall out..."

"Oh, that's just adding insult the injury..." Huffing, she turned and started walking. "We should see what else there is around here to poke at. Or maybe see if there's something closer to the water. Maybe there's fish in there."

Ziarre heaved a deep sigh as one of the adolescents tumbled into the lake, but made no move toward the water yet. Mitama would get herself out of this soon enough, or one of her siblings would dive in after her. She herself was not willing to touch such foul-looking and acrid-smelling water unless it proved strictly necessary. Sharp green eyes swept over the others, judging their reactions.

...And there went another. Well, s**t. "If you must get close to the edge, show more care than they did," she stated firmly. She spared Ciro a glance, but was confident that he would correct her if he felt differently.

---

Kucha paced a little closer in case those that fell in needed aid, but stayed well back for now. Mitama's siblings would be far quicker to go to her aid, and Kucha was going to stay out of their way. That "water" looked too foul to enter lightly. And those strange lights darting under the surface...yeah, no, she was staying out of that stuff for now.

Svana watched the water for a moment, then followed Valkyrie. As they traveled, keeping the group in earshot, she kept her eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary. She came to a sudden stop, though, when she spied a lion in some bushes, sleeping, of all things! "How is he even..." She looked at Valkyrie, "Do you know that lion?"

When Svana stopped, Valkyrie stopped. Her tail twitched, sending a few white hairs scattering, and she tilted her head. "I don't, no. But he looks awful skinny, don't you think?" She went over to him, poking the brightly colored lion. "Hey, you! Wake up!"

User Image

With a start, the multi-colored lion woke up. Sitting up, he looked around, seeming to finally notice everybody in the area. When he looked at the lake, his ears folded back, "Oh no it got deeper!" There were whispers in his ear, voices that sounded almost like his mother, or a sister long gone, was that his grandmother? Nothing could be made out, though, and he rose to his paws, "I need to go!" Heedless of the lions around him, he took off running, almost right into one of the other, older, lions in the vicinity.

User Image7-9. What is that?  A huge, dark shadow moves under the water, rippling the surface.  You peer down over the edge and slip!  Oh no! (Roll a 1d4!)
  1. You skid down, getting a grip just as you splash down into the water.  Whew, close one!  But as you take a moment to catch your breath, something bites down on whatever part of you is in the water!  It quickly lets go, giving you time to get to safety, but it's a deep, jagged bite, and a nasty infection will set in within the day.  If you're not careful - or are just unlucky - you could lose the limb.

Congrats, you're going to be sick and lose some of that fur :joy:

[2] Whoa!  Desperate for something to hold onto, you grab whoever you're with.  You both start to tumble down the steep sides toward the ominous lake below.  Players' choice if the characters only get a partial dip (in which case they will experience skin issues and fur loss, or pain and infection if they have broken skin) or swallow any liquid (a small amount will lead to fever and chills for a day plus a further week's recovery, whereas a larger amounts mean worse initial sickness and longer recovery time: each day of bad illness needs a week of recovery), or just get scraped up by the rocks and each other on the way down. If you're alone, or all your companions have rolled a fall (if they rolled and didn't fall, though, they're going down now!), treat this as a 3.
    annnnd treating as a 3 because ^
[3] You fall headlong into the water...and, speaking of heads, you hit yours on the way down!  Dazed, you struggle to to stay above the water, and gulp some down on your way back to the edge.  You will be deathly ill and fevered for at least two days, and spend a further two weeks getting back to full strength.  You also develop temporary skin issues, and some of your fur falls out!

Congrats! You're going to be sick for a few days and lose fur as well A+

  1. Something grabs ahold of you and pulls you down!  Down, down into the dark.  Just when you're about to black out, it releases you and you struggle back to the surface, and are eventually able to climb out of the crater.  You swallowed a lot of water, though, and will be deathly ill and fevered for at least three days, and spend a further three weeks clawing your way back to health.  As if that weren't bad enough, you develop temporary skin issues, and some of your fur falls out!

You thought you were slick nick, well congrats! Because of Dingus up there she dragged you down with her <3 You're welcome

And you number 11, you fell too now :joy: because of dingus number 2

Sol had been looking over the edge and unfortunately for him, he slipped. Turning to grab onto something he fumbled around but landed partly in the water as he finally got hold of something. Letting out a sigh of relief he went to pull himself up but felt something bite onto his tail, trying to drag him in but it quickly released. With a hiss he pulled himself out of the water the rest of the way and quickly inspected the missing fur from his tail. "Well this sucks." Finally secured upon the ledge he looked over towards Cherub who had a smug look on his face. "Get off it." He said and went back to tending his wounds.

Cherub was just about to say something when he saw Brisingr fall, grabbing onto Raizen on the way down, which made him laugh a little, but hearing something odd he went to look over the edge and fell into the murky depths below. Inhaling some of the water he came to the surface sputtering and coughing up a storm and it was Sol's chance to laugh this time. "That's what you get!" He said with a smug look upon his golden features.

Bris and Raiz on the other paw were currently trying to find their own way out of the water and finally managed to scramble up a somewhat steep slope.

"Well, I'm pretty sure we aren't going to be able to go near anyone anytime soon." Raiz said looking at himself.

"I don't think we'll want anyone to see us." She said with a cough.

The viking took them to the Lake of Sighs. Except... Eirik was positive this wasn't a lake at all. It... didn't look like a lake. It didn't even look like it held water! It was too... dark. And the viking certainly knew what water looked like. And it certainly didn't smell like that. His lips peeled back and he looked over at Equi, who was staying a safe distance away. "What are you, a coward-" he cut off as he heard a whisper in his ear, from Skitters. His eyes widened and he looked around, certain that she wasn't there. Hell, she was no longer in the pride! He hadn't seen her in so long. And yet... she wasn't there.

--

Egia was fascinated by the lake that... really wasn't a lake. At all. He moved closer to the edge, ignoring his sister like he had been on the entire viking. There were so many vague faces here, though he saw several that he knew as well. Including most of their own small gang. Including Sol, though Equi probably already saw him.

However, he got too close... too close.. There was something there, wasn't there? He squinted, taking another step closer... and the ground gave away, crumbling, taking him in.

--

Altxorra was keeping a careful eye on her son. Sure, he was under the belief that she was only his very stoic and uninterested sister. Alt had no intentions on correcting those beliefs, not ready to be a mother. And it was already too late to actually come true. There would be too many complications, too many questions she just couldn't answer.

She had no interest in the lake. That was, until her son started peering closely. Carefully... she walked closer to see what he was looking at. There was... something under the water. And then, Egia was falling in. The ground was crumbling under her feet too but she immediately dived for Egia, clinging to the edge as she tried to help him up. "Hold on," she hissed as someone else fell in... and had bumped her along the way. She fell in, swimming in the acidic, rancid, murky water, gasping at the sensation and trying to scramble out.

--

Bennu had been peering into the lake too when it crumbled. He had... saw something. And there was a small thrill that maybe, just maybe, it was something to collect and bring back home. He could show that one girl with the pretty wing marking!

Of course, his curiosity had him falling in. And knocking into the brown and blue lioness on the way down before he managed to grab a hold of the ledge.

--

(took out the safe post since this one isn't old enough! )

--

Equi darted forward. He had thought it would have been safer to stay away from the edge. And really, it had been. But these idiots he followed were falling in one after another.

He noticed Eirik was already there, as well, trying to reach for Egia. He was managing to drag the youth up while Equi focused on dragging the bright fiery colored adolescent up. The youths really should have stayed behind. Including him. Though... he grunted as he worked on pulling up the adolescent who was bigger than him. Way bigger than him.
