Personality:
Den is a bundle of nerves, constantly on-guard and always pushing people away. Since his parents’ leaving, he tends to try not to get too close to others, believing that if he were to keep to himself, he won’t need to worry about losing anyone else.
He doesn’t trust easily and generally fears the worst about any situation. The hybrid has kept journals for nearly as long as he could write, recording and analyzing everything. There is some whisper in the back of his mind that seems to urge him to understand why his parents have chosen to leave him, so he tends to compulsively fill the books.
Extremely superstitious, to the point that he will change everything about his routine, if he believes there is a way to make his life a bit better. He finds relations to the tiniest things, which boot he puts on first, what foods he’s eaten, who he speaks to in what order. If he finds himself a string of good luck, he will attempt to exactly re-create his days, while bad luck will lead to avoiding things he once considered favorites.
For those who can manage to break through the boy’s shell, he is a steadfast friend. He will gladly follow his friends anywhere, doing what he can to keep them safe. Den can be very overly cautious in these situations.
Description: Being a hybrid, Den inherited his mother’s near-pitch skin, though it doesn’t shift with the sun. Several small, pale blue crystals freckle his cheeks and shoulders. His eyes have the traditional black sclera and pale grey iris, accompanying his short, drooping ears. His hair is long and pale lavender, hanging just to his shoulders.
Clothing: His typical clothing is a high-necked vest in dull browns, generally with a few pockets to carry a small journal, ink, and whatever else he may need. Deep brown breeches and dull gray boots complete his usual outfit.
Accessories: His ever-present accessory is a small pouch bound on a string. It’s usually worn around his neck, or occasionally at his waist. He never leaves home without it, though, as the pouch contains soil from Juahar and volcanic rock from Yael. His parents carried similar items, hoping to remind themselves and each other of their homelands, regardless of where their travels took them. Though he hasn’t seen his parents in several years, he prays each night that their gods will watch over them and return them safely.
History: Den’s father was a Yaeli researcher, especially in the field of beasts. He chose to study them as closely as he could, travelling through the world in an attempt to document each of the species as fully as he could. His journey would often keep him in foreign lands for years at a time as he observed the various creatures, taking great care to document the traits and behaviors that seemed an individual basis, rather than those that were shared between the species.
Eventually his research led him across the globe to Juahar, where he worked tirelessly to enter the creatures into his documents. While there, he found himself very taken with his fellow earthlings, their very different culture and their unique beauty. It took quite some time, but he managed to develop a trust with one group, eventually living among them while on the island.
It was during this time that he fell in love with a Shifter woman, loving her beauty, the way she cared and defended her people. He courted her, learned their culture as best he could, the two finally marrying and having a child. Though overjoyed, Den’s father found himself missing home, doing his best to talk his bride into returning to Yael with him.
They lived along the coast for a time, but both yearned to be away, as well. They simply weren’t of the nature to remain rooted to the island. Den’s father lived for exotic places, for the adventure of the unknown. His mother was incredibly restless, attempting to adjust to a new land. Once the child was old enough that he no longer needed his mother’s constant attention, his parents took to travelling, again, leaving young Den with his aunt.
Over the years, he’s grown very close to his aunt, as she’s become something of a mother to him in the absence of his parents. The youth is unsure of where his parents might be, which is certainly difficult for him. He tends toward seclusion, finding it much easier than dealing with the idea that others may leave him, should he become too involved in their lives.
