Ebbe had advised the lioness to meet him at dawn. For him, that mean to be on the training fields well before that. The lion always made sure he was on time, even if it meant getting to places well before he needed to be. It allowed him to figure out who his opponent was. Even just a few minutes late meant could show lack of trustworthiness in the creature, even if the duel was nothing but a small training opportunity.

Still, Ebbe waited in the dark until the faintest light began to shine from the horizon. His eyes narrowed at the first sign of the sun. His opponent, where was she?

His orange eyes scanned the area for the Unbranded, a smirk ever evident on his maw. He flexed his paws in the dirt, itching to get to use them soon.

Delphi had considered asking Aithne to come with her, not because she didn't trust the Queen's Claw - she just didn't trust herself. As she made her slow and deliberate path towards the training grounds with the last twinkle of stars glimmering overhead, she thought it might've just been easier to turn and leave. What had she done to deserve her unbranded test with the Queen's most experienced and valued warrior? The mere thought of it made her uneasy in her skin and sent a chill crawling up the length of her spine.

Yet, no matter her unease, she wasn't a coward. She would not have that trait of her father's looming over her head for the rest of her life. If she wanted to prove to him that he ought to return home then she had to at least give home a chance, right?

As dawn began to break overhead, Delphi found herself standing atop the incline that allowed her to see down to the training fields. He was already there, waiting, and in the distance she allowed herself the relief of a small grimace at the sight of him proud and ready to go. Part of her had been hoping that he would just forget about it but that had been a fool's wish. With the streak of gold in her hair illuminated by the first glimmers of morning rays, the dark-pelted female made her way down the rock slopes and paused only as she came within speaking distance.

The grimace was gone and in its place was a smirk, more confident than she felt.

"Good Morning, Ebbe."

Ebbe knew she was coming. Her scent had entered the air, yet it lingered for a moment before her actual form made an appearance. Her orange sight narrowed when she approached.

So she showed up. He thought to himself. That was the first sign of a good warrior. Prompt and no nonsense. The male definitely appreciated those qualities in a lion.

He stood as she neared him.

"Greetings." He said gruffily, his tone quick and to the point. "No need for formalities this morning. Let's get started." As always, the striped male would let the opponent take the first move. It was how he analyzed their moves, and learned what kind of skill set they had. There may not have been a difference between veering left and right, but there was something to tell if the female hesitated first movement, or she went for a upward attack or lower.

Delphi could have groaned. No sooner had her paws stilled and the words died on her tongue than he was suggesting that they commence - had he never heard of warm-ups?

Still, she was his to command.

He made it obvious that he was going to stand still and force her into the first move so she lowered into a crouch and took a few small side-steps; barreling at him in hopes of actually hitting him seemed about as wise as trying to tackle a tree. Instead, she used the power in her bent haunches and leaped forward just far enough into his space that she could take a wide swipe at his lower legs.

She needed to get his body mass moving so she could use his own inertia against him.

The tiger marked male watched the few small steps at first, before the lioness picked up speed. He perhaps underestimated her speed, as found curved claws connecting to his flesh, grazing the skin as he pulled back.

A sneer rose to his maw, as his hind end swayed behind him in a turn. His body followed hers as a guttural snarl echoed. He tensed, his hind legs tucking under him as he used the momentum to jump at her. Ebbe, personally, enjoyed the aerial attacks. Some battles they worked to his advantage. Other days well...he had a few scars to show the end result of them.

Still, the lion continued his favored of attacks of different victims until they learned his own fighting style.

Ebbe aimed for her neck, intending to flip the female to end this duel quickly.

Delphi's prowess did not come from power or bulk, she was not a large enough lioness to compete with a male in sheer brute force and she was not fool enough to think that she could. No, her skills had been derived from a lifetime of survival in the rogue lands with a father that prided himself in being a scrapper.

Who cares about honor as long as you survive?

She could hear his gruff, short tone as clear as the birds chirping at the sunrise. Even if this male didn't mean to kill her she still meant to show him that she was not some spoiled, bratty girl.

The pale eyes of the female watched him as he shifted and lowered - as he did, she mirrored him, sinking more into her haunches again. The jump was a surprise but prepared as she was, it wasn't too difficult to react. As he aimed for her neck, she dove forward and sank low. His claws connected with her shoulder as she fell below his aim but her own swept upward for the chest and underbelly he had put within her reach.

The expression on her face as she slid past him was somewhere between a smirk and a grimace. She was not so easy as he assumed.

Ebbe frowned as he missed his target. Sure his claws hit something but so did hers, the soft underbelly. The lion skidded across the dirt as he landed as he felt the sting on his belly. Perhaps Ebbe had underestimated the female.

Instead of attacking, he found his claws sheathing themselves, bowing his head to concede the duel. While normally Ebbe would continue without mercy, he wanted to see just how well Delphi would do in a battle of strength. She had definitely proved herself up against the Monarch's Claw. Now there was another recruit he would make sure to keep his eyes on.

"Enough." He said in conjunction with the bow of his head. "I have seen and felt enough." The belly wound Ebbe despised the most.

"Perhaps I have underestimated you," He voiced his thoughts. "Though next time, don't wait for a duel. I can get a sense of your skill set to know what kind of fighter you can be." Did Ebbe actually smile? No, it was probably some misconstrued smirk he always held.

The female rose slowly to her feet as he bowed and called out the end of their little spar - could it have been over so quickly? For a split moment she seemed to hesitate, as if she were not entirely sure he was willing to give up. Her rogue's survival instinct wanted to call this a trick but her knowledge of the pride told her that they were much too proud to fight dirty. Maybe Katiti wasn't the only reason the old rogue b*****d had refused the calling.

It took her a moment but she at last managed to chase the tension from her bones and stood before him, listening to his short spurt of advise. Did he look.. pleased? Her brows narrowed a fraction as she tried to decipher the peculiar almost-smile on his maw but she nodded to acknowledge what he had said about the duels. She could have given a dozen excuses for why she had been waiting but she knew none of it mattered. Her worries had been fool's concerns.

"Alright," she conceded in a rare moment of honesty, entirely lacking in her impish, teasing behavior for the span of a breath. "I won't waste anymore time, Queen's Claw."

Then, as quickly as it had gone, the playful smirk tugged at her lips again.

"Do I get something special for winning against you?"

Did...Did she just ask him for something for winning against him? Ebbe was taken aback by the question, unsure if she was kidding or not. No matter how a duel went, no one ever asked him if they get anything from winning a duel against the Monarch's Claw.

Ebbe frowned, watching Delphi. "And what is it that you want for doing such a task?" The lion asked, watching the dark female. He would be lying if he said he wasn't curious to know what she had been thinking. A lioness who had fighting skills, and who was bold to boot?

He would definitely be keeping an eye on her.

Oh, had that actually worked?

Delphi did her best to conceal the surprise on her face - she had honestly expected him to 'tut' and walk away from her for such a ludicrous request but she must have made enough of an impact on him during the duel that he didn't turn her down immediately. Perfect.

"Make me your apprentice."

Quick, bold. To the point. She took a few steps toward him, flicking her tail pointedly as she did. Would he turn her down? So far as Delphi was aware, the Queen's Claw hadn't taken on any apprentices. It meant she had nothing by which to judge his standards but also, perhaps, because no one had ever been bold enough to ask.

Apprentice?

While it was true Ebbe hadn't taken anyone under his wing yet, he had few potentials he thought about. Considering how well Delphi had dueled, she too was a candidate. Although, the lion wasn't sure he was ready to accept that of the formerly unbranded female.

He thought for a moment, contemplating the question before actually making a decision.

Maybe if he actually named an apprentice, others would also come forth wanting the same position? If that was the case, Ebbe would be able to choose the best of the best.

"Fine." The male stated, turning away from Delphi. "Though, one step out of line and you're out. Got it?" He waited to hear what her answer would be, before stalking off, just as the sun began to rise.

A quick smirk tugged at her maw as he gave her his clipped, one word answer.

"Got it," she responded immediately, flicking her tail again as her eyes settled on the back of his head. As he began stalking off in the direction of whatever duty he was concentrated upon completing next, she simply stood there and watched him go.

Yesterday she had been worried that she would become nothing but an Unbranded, too weak to fight her way through a warrior like Ebbe, and today she was his apprentice. She might have never stepped foot on the red clay before the day she and Aithne passed the border but she already felt more at home here than she had in the rogue lands her entire life.

Maybe her father would join her soon if she could prove to him there was a place here not with that wicked Vessel. Maybe.

With her smirk still firmly in place and a streak of confidence to put a proud rise in her chin, the dark female wandered off to see if she could find Aithne and give her the good news.
