Name: Gabhan
Stage: Prentice
Race: Pureblooded Geian
Gender: Male
3 Base Traits:
Independent: He doesn't blink about potentially leaving his family to pursue a future away from Belrea. He's quietly confident in his own abilities, or at least in his ability to handle himself and solve his own problems.
Ill-Mannered: He's a country boy through and through. He lacks refinement, and is blunt with his thoughts, loud in his mannerisms, and oblivious to the potential for offending someone. An example would be making the sensible decision to sleep next to his family's familiars after a long night, to keep warm, and being confused as to why everyone thinks he smells so bad.
Determined/Stubborn: When he wants to do something, Gabby sticks to it - even if it isn't necessarily the best course of action. This can at times lead to him being argumentative, though he can eventually see reason and change his mind, it's difficult to do and more often than not he's already made a rushed decision and acted on it before considering the ramifications, or fully considering someone's alternate viewpoint.

Personality: As one of many children in a large family, Gabby does well in a crowd and is the big-brother to everyone he meets. He's likely to step out of line to help a stranger, if he feels sympathetic to them; but also just as likely to start an argument if he feels someone is in the wrong. Raised in the country, he's blunt to a fault, and somewhat boorish to those with more refined sensibilities. All he wants in life is to work hard, and sit back and relax with friends, family, and a good bit of music and dancing!
Description: Dark skin, on the husky side, thick and muscled but without definition. Somewhat pudgy. His hair is mint green, with pale blue eyes, a broad nose, and a goatee. His hair is shaved on both sides, and curly/thick on the top. His marking is a series of boxy lines beneath his right eye.
Clothing: Pale, sleeveless top with high-waisted black slacks and tall boots.
Accessories: N/A
History: A middle child in a large Geian family, Gabhan (called Gabby by his family and friends) is the apprentice to his father as a stonemason (in the sector of Resource). As a child, he resigned himself to a life of hard work with his family - but with the advent of steam transportation to the other continent, he's hopeful to leave Belrea and its tightly constrained social roles, and make a life for himself as a musician (a role reserved usually for lightning earthlings back home). There's little real drama to Gabby's life, beyond the normal tension held between siblings in a large family - and he wishes, perhaps, for a life of excitement away from his well-established family.

[I don't know if I'm up for a staff custom yet, but I thought I should at least get him approved before then!~]

Sorry for the delay!

He looks good so far, here's a few starting questions...

Since he's very independent and stubborn does that often lead to trouble? Is he bad at listening to directions for example ? Even better yet...would he refuse to stop and ask for directions since he's determined that he can read the map on his own? Basically how long would it take for him to admit his faults or would he rather just keep trudging along before ever accepting that he could have been in the wrong?

Also he seems to have no qualm about leaving his family because he is confident in his ability to take care of himself, but does he worry about how they can handle life without him? Would they miss him ? Is he super needed at home?

Would you consider saying that ill-mannered's description also shows that he is honest? Would it be hard for him to lie since he's so keen on being blunt?

His life seems simple enough but how does he interact with his family?

Did he have any friends back home that would support him or discourage him from his dream of leaving Belrea to pursue music in Tendaji?

When and how did he decide that music was the fit for him? ((Especially in a society where entertainment is often left to the lightning race.))

Gabby's stubbornness can lead to trouble, certainly. If he has faith in someone's abilities and knowledge, he will listen; but the moment he starts to doubt them, or feels they may be wrong, that's when he will defer to his own abilities. He may be reluctant to stop and ask for help - and if he did stop to get help, and the person couldn't explain to him why he failed, then he'll be unlikely to listen to them.

In example, he has an outdated map and asks someone directions - those directions contradict the map. He will then argue about why the map says one thing, and the person says the other, until the person gets fed up and leaves or reveals that his map is wrong/outdated. As long as it wasn't his OWN failings, he may be willing to let the matter drop; but if that person insisted he was reading it wrong, he'd wave them off and continue on his own.

He definitely doesn't like to admit his own faults, and nothing short of hurting himself by making a mistake, or worse getting someone ELSE hurt, would lead to him admitting defeat.

Also he seems to have no qualm about leaving his family because he is confident in his ability to take care of himself, but does he worry about how they can handle life without him? Would they miss him ? Is he super needed at home?

Gabby would definitely miss his siblings, but his elder siblings and parents often call him out on his failings, so his opinion on it would be 'well, if you're so much better, you should have no problem filling my shoes.'

So yes, he feels they would be able to keep up without him, but that his leaving may also teach them a lesson. If he was to return home and find that, sure enough, they are going along fine and without blinking, then he would likely be upset/frustrated and being so easily written off. So- he has mixed feelings on the subject.

Would you consider saying that ill-mannered's description also shows that he is honest? Would it be hard for him to lie since he's so keen on being blunt?

Yeah, he doesn't think on the fly very well. He's a country boy, through and through - overly friendly, honest to the point of risk, and if he somehow realized he SHOULD lie about something, he'd probably not be very good at it, or at least coming up with something convincing.

His life seems simple enough but how does he interact with his family?

He adores his family, they're all very close - but he has a very typical argumentative nature with his parents, who think they know what's best for him; rivalry with his older siblings, who seem so much more accomplished, and fond annoyance at his clingy younger siblings who he is a great big brother to. He'd probably get homesick after a while, though he would have a tough time admitting it.

Did he have any friends back home that would support him or discourage him from his dream of leaving Belrea to pursue music in Tendaji?

He may! I would definitely prefer making links between other characters, rather than NPC friends though - I'll have to peruse around if he gets approved~

When and how did he decide that music was the fit for him? ((Especially in a society where entertainment is often left to the lightning race.))

His brand of music is more - the sort of workman's dittys and family singing, musical plucking that he'd have seen at close family events, or during a long day's work. I don't think Geian's are lacking music, just that they're not likely to be the bards or musicians that go around the cities, or play at events/taverns.

Gabby is drawn to the community of music, the playfulness and enjoyment and energy music can bring to a room, not so much the idea of some coy singer or musician plucking at an instrument in the corner of a room.

How do you think he will react to the cultures in Tendaji as opposed to Belrea? Will he have culture shock or will he embrace them?

Will the lack of strict social rules confuse him? Or will he find a more comfortable home in Oba where social structure plays a bigger part?

Do you think he will have a hard time living without the "technology" that Belrea provides?

Culture shock, definitely - but in a good way. He'll be really confused for a long time, maybe overwhelmed, but ultimately I think he'll really enjoy life away from Belrea.

Will the lack of strict social rules confuse him? Or will he find a more comfortable home in Oba where social structure plays a bigger part?

It will confuse him, definitely - he will probably have a hard time understanding who does what, as I imagine Belrea makes it easier to tell what someone's task/profession is. But he also left BECAUSE he wanted to work outside of the social structure, so he'll embrace it while also being frustrated by its inefficiency.

Do you think he will have a hard time living without the "technology" that Belrea provides?

For a long while, yes, definitely. Things being so spread out will be weird - the lack of shipping, easy transport and trade, etc. and relative slowness of Tendaji versus Belrea will be, as you said before, culture shock. I think a simpler life will ultimately suit him, but he'll have to adjust to it first.
