Name: Kaleth Galhn
Stage: Prentice
Race: Yaeli
Gender: Male
3 Base Traits: angry • private • dedicated
Personality:
      GOOD
    • capable, decisive, dedicated
    • disciplined, hard working, earnest
    • protective, observant, principled

      NEUTRAL
    • private, stoic, introverted
    • aloof, quiet, reserved

      BAD
    • angry, abrasive, defensive
    • pessimistic, argumentative, asocial
    • destructive, violent, distrusting

Perhaps Kaleth’s most notable trait, however much he attempts to tame and constrict it, is his temper. While it does not make him proud, it is undeniable that Kaleth can be something of a loose canon when it comes to managing his anger, and this has a fairly significant negative impact on his relationships with others, forcing his aunt and uncle to move him from school to school in attempts to find a place that he can ‘fit in’ without causing a disruption. On the one hand, very privately Kaleth desires close ties and is incredibly loyal to those he cares about, but on the other, he fears loss and is highly insecure in regards to his own self-worth, predicting ahead of time that no one will in the end want anything to do with him and inevitably eventually abandon him, and as a guard mechanism against that he will preemptively reject others ‘before they can reject him’, lash out sporadically, and take out his frustrations on the world and people around him. As a result, wherever he goes, Kaleth makes a reputation for himself, usually as one to avoid, for his disruptive and unpredictable readiness for violence.

Despite this, Kaleth is quiet for the most part, reserved and withdrawn, as he finds it difficult to connect and does want usually not to ‘cause trouble.’ He maintains a neutral-pessimistic attitude on the whole and tends not to engage, distancing himself from his peers to avoid clash. With the right trigger, though, he becomes furious, and at that point he can be somewhat blind to logic and reason as his anger takes over. Kaleth tends to use his anger as a path to funnel his upset and release built up tension. Sometimes, he successfully channels this so as to unleash it at more convenient times—like railing into a training dummy or running for miles on end just to exhaust himself. Other times, however, it can snap out on him at notably less convenient moments, and cause him to say things, break objects, or otherwise make an explosive nuisance of himself that he can’t really seem to control until he calms again. Kaleth’s temper has and will cause him and his family continuing issues as he grows and attempts to manage himself.

Still, in keeping with his guarded nature, Kaleth is a naturally private individual. While not 'shy' precisely, Kaleth is more of an introvert than not and prefers to keep most things to himself. He does not want to deal with the world’s judgment, and likes as much space and time to himself as he can get. Kaleth is happiest when he is in places of peace and quiet, alone. He especially enjoys swimming, reading, and playing his musical instrument far enough away from anyone who might hear such that he can be the sole participant in its energy. Although he knows it will never be what makes him a living, Kaleth loves music as a personal passion. He does not share this with many, but rather extricates himself to places where he has no audience so that he can practice and revel in his own progression. To him, it isn’t about pleasing anyone, it’s simply about making the music. And music is beautiful. He hopes to one day satisfy himself with his own talent, if no one else.

Finally, Kaleth is fiercely dedicated to what he takes on, and anyone he connects to. He is not the smartest boy there is, but he is intelligent enough to get by and works hard, whether it be intellectual or physical tasks. He is focused, driven, and persistent. He believes that if he is going to take on a task, he ought to do it right, and is disgusted with laziness in anyone, including himself.

Beyond his base traits, Kaleth is passively religious — he believes in the Yaeli gods despite not being especially fervent about his faith — as well as honorable, decisive, capable, dutiful, earnest, abrasive, protective, cautious, self-conscious, stern, and reserved. Though his aunt and uncle did the best they could, their upbringing has inspired in him a sense of being a burden, coming from a ‘troubled’ past, and needing to prove himself. Kaleth simply isn’t sure yet what it is he needs to prove other than that he is not what everyone thinks of him—regardless of what that might be.

Description: Darkest brown skin and dark purple hair, heavy freckles, muscular, strong jawline, thick brow, cranky. Kaleth is tall and built. Even as a young man, as soon as his body develops the functions for it he begins to put on muscle. His active lifestyle and dedication to the physical builds on that, and as he ages he will only become larger and more of a brick house. He is a soldier in the making and takes his body-maintenance and development seriously, specifically making dietary and physical-routine choices to make himself into more of a capable warrior.

Clothing: Practical middle-class soldier-student. CC.

History: Kaleth was the first and only child born to Bodrin and Lezessa Galhn.

After beginning from almost nothing in a small, modest family, born in the capitol, and educated at only the most basic level in a public schoolhouse, Bodrin’s younger brother Erock was Chosen to serve as a priest for the gods. It was the highest honor their meager family had ever attained, and yet, though at that point his brother became the pride and talk of his parents, Bodrin felt himself especially inspired, and driven: clearly, their family was meant for higher places, and if he only rigidly applied himself, the gods would continue to bless them.

Thus, after completing a rudimentary education, he went immediately to work, focusing on business — and eventually, politics, though he never tangled directly with the church or any of its members, believing that to be holy territory. In these endeavors, his ambition carried him like a tide.

Between a potent combination of natural charisma, intimidation, and raw drive and willpower, Bodrin’s successes seemed for a time to be god-given and unending. He made full use of every resource before him, and at some point seemed unstoppable, as though he could do no wrong, and all was falling into place as the gods intended. In his ‘golden years’ of success, Bodrin came into powerful business connections, wealth, and political savvy. He met the right people, and was a tireless and conniving enough figure that his impression stuck with all those he encountered. He met a beautiful and intelligent woman who he came to love and eventually took as his wife in a temple before the gods.

Over the years, Bodrin carefully crafted an intimidating name and reputation for himself—and for a period, he had everything: all the trappings of money and rapport, a treasured partner, and eventually their firstborn son, Kaleth.

Until his chance-taking got the better of him.

Despite his genuine love for his family, Bodrin was never the kindest of men. Ambitious and driven, but not fair or even honest, Bodrin maintained a lust for control and brutality and a willingness to stop at nothing to get his way that eventually ruined everything he considered precious. Scheming with those in positions of power, partaking in highly illegal operations of violence and bribery, and breaking apart lives for the sake of his own station and prosperity eventually put Bodrin behind bars in a Pajore penitentiary.

Lezessa, who had been and remains madly in love with him, could not cope.

Thus, in his earliest years, Kaleth had a loving father and mother, both stable and incredibly attentive. His father was perhaps not as present as he could have been, but he was enough so to leave a deep, lasting impression on his only son. Bodrin had always valued his relationships with both his child and his wife and made himself an active part of Kaleth’s early upbringing. As a result, Kaleth was dedicated and attached, and from his own perspective, saw only the best attributes of his father: happy, protective, encouraging, ambitious, loving. Then, the man disappeared. The ‘government’ took him, for ‘crimes’ Kaleth did not at the time understand. His mother became irreconcilable, distraught, and distant. She fell to alcohol and could not care for herself, let alone raise her child as all around them, their name was dashed and most of what they owned was taken to pay for damages as a result of Bodrin’s sins. Almost overnight, their lives were transformed from one of comfort and happiness, where everyone respected and knew his father and family, to shame and distance, where he was expected to understand that the largest and most positive figure in his life was a bad man who did horrible things and hurt people.

Kaleth was eight years old on the night his father was taken, and did not adjust smoothly. Eventually, mostly thanks to his mother’s incompetence, he came under the care of his aunt and uncle on his mother’s side.

Meya and Brianel had children of their own, but Meya could not stand to see her sister’s boy go to an orphanage for her lack of care. Thus they attempted, best they could, to raise Kaleth as their own. But, even beginning at the young age he was, Kaleth had his attachments to the life and family he had become accustomed to. He wanted his father back. He wanted to understand why his mother had changed. He wanted to go home. He could not have any of these things, and neither Meya nor Brianel could appropriately explain why.

The rest of the world, though, continued to be happy to provide answers. His father was a ‘killer,’ a liar, filth, cruel and twisted, ‘in the place he deserved to be’ because ‘justice had been done’ and Kaleth could not begin to match the two pictures together. For all that he was small still, his father had always been a loving figure in his own life, and it first grated on and then eventually enraged him that so many would say so much foul about someone he loved and missed. Kaleth became withdrawn, temperamental, and unruly. He struck out at anyone who dared say anything against his family—which was many—and over time, made a small reputation for himself among his peers.

Kaleth first attended school with his cousins, but after several violent outbreaks was moved to a private institution, where he also made trouble and was eventually expelled for beating a boy unconscious, after which he was taken home for one on one tutoring—though Meya and Brianel could not afford that for long. Fortunately, he was intelligent enough that his basic understanding of school subjects has not suffered, but Meya and Brianel are concerned and at a loss as to how to deal with his last years of education. Most recently, as Kaleth is sixteen, soon to turn seventeen, they are deploying him to a boarding school with a focus on those pupils more combat-inclinded, which trains warriors, mages, and healers alike, in the hopes that with a channel for his energy available, Kaleth might calm and find a place for himself.

At the beginning of his prentice stage, Kaleth will be sixteen going on seventeen, beginning his studies at this school on Yael, centrally located in the capitol. He still visits his father in confinement when he can, and is counting the days until his ten-year sentence — which should run sometime after Kaleth’s eighteenth birthday — expires and they can be properly reunited in full.
