Lonely Phantom

PostPosted: Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:55 pm
Yithemba moved through the dry, shrubby grass lion a lioness on a mission. And, in some regard, that wasn't an untrue fact. The lioness always walked with purpose. There was always some sort of fuel in her fire. She had started the day with Emeka, the three-legged Imbiza. She had a few sore muscles and uncomfortable bruises from the prior day's 'fighting lesson' with Ahlaq and her close friend was the only healer she trusted to not gossip.

Not that she minded the gossip. She just didn't want to deal with the questions and weird looks, right now.

Emeka had been quick to shoo her off after the aches were deemed to be not that big of a deal. The Imbiza had been busy (and it was nice to see the three-legged lioness with rejuvenated life). There seemed to be a bit of a boom in children (not unexprected, what with the new Umholi and Inselelo about) that Emeka had been gathering and mixing herbs that she thought might become necessary. They chatted about it for a bit—the new explosion of life—and Yi had been on her way.

Though the thought stuck in her mind a bit. Lots of cubs meant lost of people to take care of cubs. Lots of attention. Which meant well for the cubs. If there was a time to jump on the bandwagon…

Yi was wandering, but not at all aimlessly. She was searching. Her steps took her away from where a majority of the pride might have been lingering, hoping that the lion she sought might be away from prying ears.

"Umkhombo?"

Things were settling down, more or less. The initial upheaval and inevitable controversy had passed, and the day-to-day routine was comfortably restored. Now and then there was an errant rogue to be directed away from the pride, or a challenger to be chased off, but no true threats had presented themselves. All in all, it was fairly quiet - a marked change from life in the Namib or amongst the Impibutho. It was odd, to say the least.

Siring cubs had added to the strangeness: cubs that were no longer cubs at all. He'd had to see off Sher-Kha-t's son - his son - weeks ago. He couldn't put words to all the feelings he had about having children who were his and yet...weren't fully his, not the way that Khazine was. It was the way of life he'd grown up with, but it didn't feel as normal and natural as it once had. To have cubs with someone he had no feelings for (apart from respect), and very little role in raising them, sat just a little ill with him. Perhaps in part because he was so close with Khazine, and worried what she might think.

The only one he'd spent any significant amount of time with was Nekhet, to ensure that he was prepared for life outside the pride, and once he was... Well. What was done was done, and he doubted he would ever see the boy again. He didn't strike him as the type with the desire or ambition to return and challenge. Would he have other sons? Would they one day try to overthrow him? Or maybe it would be one of Andhaka's, or Bangizwe's, or some foreign stranger.

Sitting away from anyone, looking out at the horizon, he flicked his ears back when he heard the lioness approach, and turned his head to regard her when she spoke.

"Yithemba," he acknowledged with a nod.
