She blinked, frost falling from her eyelashes. Snow all around her, below her, above her, beside her. She was breathing in the icy powder, lungs burning, breath coming out in steam. A shiver ran through her and she blinked again. Awareness. She was aware. Slowly, she moved her toes. Her tail. Her feet. Opened and closed her mouth. One muscle at a time, she tensed and flexed. Relearned. Breathing picked up. Heart rate increased. Panic began to flood into her. Unsteadily, she got to her feet. Or at least, she tried. She failed. She tried again. Again and again, she attempted it. Panic was seizing her, taking her breath, stealing her eye sight. The world was fading, tunneling, becoming grey and then black. A storm was rushing in her ears. She breathed and breathed but she couldn’t breath. The ground she had found underneath her feet was gone and she laid in the snow, wheezing, eyes closing.

The world was gone.

Rangi’ukungu was lost. He must have taken a wrong turn somewhere because now, his nose was freezing and frost settling in his fur. Yes, he must have turned a wrong turn. A sneeze escaped and he shivered. That had been a week ago. He had made a small den in a cave he found, filled with furs he bought from a trader. It had taken most of his valuables to afford it.

Sighing, he was looking around for the den. Trying to search for it. And… spotted a bit of a darker bump in the snow. He blinked before cautiously approaching. He didn’t want trouble… he just wanted to find color. And to find color, a seer. Or even better, a god. But… it was a wild dog. A female. Rangi blinked again before looking around nervously. She would freeze out here. Sigh, he grabbed her by the scruff of her neck and began to drag.

When she had came to again, it was warm. Too warm. Uncomfortably warm. She took a deep breath, snuggling further into the furs. They were musty. She was comfortable, despite being too warm. Something wasn’t right. There had been snow. Now… there wasn’t. Her eyes shot open. At first, it was too bright, she was too near the fire. Bolting up right, she stumbled away from it, her legs not quite working. Where was she?
Currently… she was alone. Letting out a breath, she leaned against the stone wall, suddenly exhausted. Her neck hurt. Her lungs stung. And she was light headed. A rough clay bowl laid near the wall, filled with melting stone. Water. Suddenly, her throat was tight. She was thirsty. Slowly, she inched over to it.

Rangi had found a few rabbits. It had been hard to hunt for them. He wasn’t the best hunted but he was getting better. He may have to see if he can tan the fur from these rabbits to provide more warmth. Sighing, he pushed past the cloth he had hung up carefully, watching it closely. It had fallen the first few times he hung it up. Humming happily when it remained, he moved further into the cave. And nearly dropped the rabbits.

She was awake. After three days of sleeping, she had finally opened her eyes. And was sitting up. ”Hello,” he breathed.

A noise caught her attention. Alert, she moved to the further wall, on the other side of the small fire. Fear rang through her. Where was she? Who was that? Why was she here? A large lump was taking shelter in her throat, making it hard to swallow. Maybe it was her heart. Though, she could clearly feel it pounding away in her chest. Was she panicking again? She may be. She opened her mouth to speak, to ask her questions, demand her answers. But the words wouldn’t get past the lump. She was breathing rapidly again, her vision swimming. She leaned heavily against the cave wall, unable to hold herself up.

Rangi rushed forward, unsure. She was… hyperventilating. He never had to deal with it before, never witnessed it personally. But he heard about what to do. He slowed down as he came around the fire until he was right before her. ”Breathe slowly,” he murmured softly, moving his head to look into her eyes. ”In and out, try to breath normally,” he told her. He attempted to make her breath in deeply, making it shallower each round, a little more evenly paced. He hoped this worked. He really didn’t know how to calm her down otherwise. Continually, he breathed for her.

He was… helping her? Following his motions, she slowly began to get her breath back. Slowly. Ever so slowly. Her vision was coming back. The rush in her ears was dying down. She could think again. And still, she followed how he was breathing, copying him. Proverbially clinging to him to help her stay conscious. The panic died down. She slouched to the ground, worn out. But still awake. Her throat still ached. But the panic was gone. She looked up at him. Maybe… maybe he could help her. Maybe he could tell her. She needed to know, the question that vibrated in her head. ”Who am I?” she asked in a rasp, voice weak.

Who was she? She… didn’t know who she was? Rangi blinked, taken aback. ”I thought you would be able to tell me,” he said slowly, before giving her a considering look. Was she being serious or was she jesting? Considering she had just nearly passed out from panic, Rangi thought it was safe to assume she was serious. Quietly, he moved over to the rabbits before tossing one to her. He preferred his slightly cooked. Sure, it was more work. And he could always eat it raw, would usually eat it raw. But he had time to slowly work the fur off of the rabbit. Before he began, however, he looked up at her. ”Can you remember anything?” he asked carefully, claws now digging into the fur, carefully detaching the fur.

She flinched when the rabbit was thrown at her before looking at it. Sadness filled her as she gazed down at the lifeless creature. But… she didn’t know why. Slowly, she shook her head. ”Nothing,” she whispered. She tried. She really did. But all she could remember… ”All I remember… is snow. Just… white. Only white. Nothing but white,” she whispered, staring down at the white rabbit. With red now. She didn’t like the color red. She always wanted it to be white. Not red. Tears filled her eyes and she shook her head, trembling. ”Why can’t it stay white,” she murmured mournfully, staring at the red splattered hare.

So… she couldn’t remember anything. Rangi didn’t know how to process things, how to move forward. He had gotten the fur halfway off of the rabbit when she commented about white and why things couldn’t stay white. Blinking, he looked at the rabbit. It was white. With a gray. He couldn’t see what she could. Envy struck him and he quickly shoved it away. Now wasn’t the time. Taking in a deep breath, he gave her a cheery smile. ”Well, if you don’t have a name, or can’t remember your name, why don’t we give you one? Just a temporary one, until you can remember yours,” he chirped happily, trying to cheer up her mood. Trying to help her move past whatever she was going through. ”How about Sinowo Chinkokomo? It means snow blizzard,” he told her, tilting his head. ”Unoriginal but I like the sound of it.”
