Farasi and Mahiri had been traveling with one another for quite some time. It wasn't something that Farasi had counted on initially, but eventually the serval became as important as breathing to him. Her colors had initially reminded him of his lost love, Vaiva, but her personality differed greatly from his former mates. Mahiri was loud-mouthed, boisterous and even sometimes rude, though she knew to apologize after. Still, it was plain to see that she and Farasi had developed a bond over their time spent together.
Yet, even with Mahiri to help keep him company, he still needed to continue his search for Vaiva. She still had to be out there somewhere and he would search the rogue lands and beyond in order to find them. Even to find any of their three beautiful cubs. He wouldn't let himself consider the possibility that he would never find her. He couldn't-it would ruin him. So on they searched together and Farasi had to keep telling himself that today would be different. It was the only thing that he had to go off of, for the time being.
Mahiri had found Farasi seasons ago. He had mistaken her for his kin, as she understood it, but as he told her these days, she was quite different from his beloved Vaiva. She teased him about having a particular fondness for bright colors, but he had shaken his head.
"Only Vaiva's colors, really."
That hadn't quite inspired any more teasing from her, for that day anyway. At any rate, she had agreed to look with him, but Mahiri had taken it upon herself to make sure her lion companion was taking care of himself, by making her own needs very present. Whenever she thought he needed to eat, she would screech and cry until they went hunting. Whenever she saw his paws start to drag from exhaustion, she would moan about how she just couldn't move any move or she'd just die. Compassionate lion that he was, Farasi would always listen to her and never once had remarked that she was whiny or bossy.
She was quite the lucky familiar, for all the hard work she had to put in to make sure her bonded companion was alright. She did think his quest to find his lady love was a little far-fetched, but he didn't often ask her opinion on the topic, so on they went. As far as Mahiri was concerned, they'd never find this "Vaiva" she kept hearing about, but it wasn't any business of hers. She liked traveling and she liked traveling with Farasi especially, so she was content to let the days go by forever.

belloblossom Nasrin is an adult, I just don't have an adult cert for her yet. XD One of the many things journal needs updated with.
Vaiva had settled into her new home. She and her twin had come upon the pride quite by accident one day. The cheetah had been despondent over the loss of her mate and cubs; her twin had stuck by her side as she wandered aimlessly. She'd half hoped to find her cubs, but nothing came of it.
Instead she'd slowly settled down into a secluded life. The pride preferred to live their lives in the shadows. She was glad to have her sister by her side, but she couldn't give up the outside lands completely. Luckily a hunter didn't have to. She easily roamed the roguelands in her search for food for the pride. Vaiva was slowly adjusting to her new life. She tried not to think about her mate. It still hurt too much to think he was gone forever.
Which was where the cheetah was now. She still felt comfortable in day or night, although she knew some of her pridemates were strictly nocturnal. Vaiva moved to the edge of a tiny hill and scanned the horizon for prey. A bird was perched upon her shoulder, waiting her command.

Nasrin had been rescued as a chick by the cheetah. She'd tried to fly far too soon and fallen from her nest. Vulnerable and unable to return she'd tried to call to her parents to return her. They couldn't hear, but something else had. The cat had just been about to grab her when the cheetah had stepped in and chased it away. At first she'd been afraid the bigger feline would have eaten her too, instead the cat made an offer.
"I need a familiar. A bird like you could be very useful to me in hunting. I'll care and protect you if you'll join with me."
She'd thought about it carefully, then readily joined the feline she later was called a cheetah, and Vaiva by name. Sometimes she caught her friend staring at her, and knew from asking before that it was because her colors sort of resembled her lost mate. Nasrin did what she could to cheer the cheetah and devoted herself to helping her provide the best game for the pride that had taken them both in.
Now she rested comfortably. When Vaiva saw something she thought might be good, she'd go scout it out first. It wasn't even hard really. Flying was much faster; almost faster than Vaiva at a dead run, and she could fly much longer than the cheetah could run before she got too hot and tired.

"Farasiii." Mahiri whined loudly, throwing herself at the lion's paws. "I'm hungry. I need to eat now or I'll starve! You don't want me to starve, do you?"
For all her moral code about seeing her companion fed, Mahiri did get hungry herself. By complaining so loudly about it until her friend took notice and did something for the both of them was just killing two birds in one jump. At the current time, she was hungry and by default she assumed it was bound time that Farasi was hungry too. And so on she whined.
"Alright, alright. Let's see if you haven't scared everything off with your yowling then, hm?" Farasi replied.
After a bit of hunting, he finally came across a small herd of gazelle grazing in a patch of grass nearby. Farasi signaled Mahiri with a flick of his tail to go hide in the tall grasses. She would do her job and spook the herd into flight and after he'd single out one to take down, well, he'd hunt the beast and they could eat. He stared at the gazelle, noticing one of them walked with a distinct limp and he flicked his tail again, something he knew Mahiri would be watching for. The hunt was on and Farasi was determined to bring in a prize for it.
magnadearel Shall we have it be that Farasi and Vaiva end up hunting the same herd and bump into each other that way?

With the signal given to her by Farasi, Mahiri launched herself from the tall grass towards the gazelle. There were maybe seven of them in total, though it was hard to tell among all the legs, but Mahiri didn't let anything stop her. She growled and bit at the air near the gazelles, urging them to run away from her, before she slipped out of the crowd and leaned back, eager to watch Farasi at work.
She watched him shoot out of his own hiding spot, silent and efficient. The gazelle panicked when they saw a lion barreling their way and kicked their legs in panic. Mahiri smiled as she spotted the gazelle he was obviously headed towards, because it was notably slower than the others and didn't lift its legs as high. She watched as started moving into leap at the gazelle in question, but it was then that a blur of color streaked by her.
"Hey!" She hollered after the interloper. "This is our hunt! Find your own!"
Farasi had observed quietly as his familiar did her job. She was getting good at this. The first time they'd tried such a technique had gotten her a kick in the ribs. Miraculously, his serval friend had survived the encounter, but from then on they didn't try to bite off more than they could chew-literally.
Small herds like this were considerably more up to their style. He was so focused on his goal that he nearly didn't hear his familiar's cry. Wait, what? Was someone else here? He would have to get the gazelle before anyone else, he thought and quickly let out a roar, causing the group to scatter and hopefully, to scare off whoever Mahiri had been warning him about. Now, it was time to go in for the final kill and he willed himself to go faster. He had a family to feed, even if she had a much smaller stomach than he did. He wouldn't let someone else get what he saw first.

Vaiva sent her bird back up to help with directions. As she got closer to the tiny herd, she guessed they must have split from a larger herd nearby, the cheetah moved into stealth mode. She moved quickly and efficiently. The sun was up, so she'd get hot quickly. She needed to get closer before she used her speed. It would be so easy for the herd to spook before she was ready. And she saw the herd milling uneasily and moving away from something. Damn! They hadn't seen her, she was sure, but something else had spooked them.
What she hadn't expected was a voice that called out from somewhere. It sounded small and was just yelling at her, so Vaiva felt she could safely ignore it. What she couldn't ignore was the roar of a lion. They were in trouble now! The roar had the added benefit of terrorizing the herd and starting it to scatter. That meant they weren't looking where they were going. Perhaps she'd still have a chance to take something down and avoid the lion. Vaiva waited for one to head her direction then put on a burst of speed toward it.
Nasrin looped in the sky. Plans were going as normal until the herd sensed something. She narrowed her eyes and scanned the area quickly. What had spooked them? Eventually she picked out a small, yet colorful, serval. She swooped in for a scoff, "a tiny thing like you can't hope to catch one of these! Go back to your mice!" Even as she spoke, she stayed up high enough out of reach. Cats, most cats, did hunt birds too. Just then she spotted a tan lion stalking the herd.
She must warn Vaiva there was a lion here! Yet the lion did it for her. Nasrin scanned the rising dust as the animals scattered. Vaiva still might be able to make a kill in the confusion if she guide her friend there. She spotted the cheetah, then several gazelles. Two were heading toward the cheetah, but then one split off. The remaining wasn't the limping one, but it might do. She gave a whistled signal to her friend. Dead ahead!

Mahiri snapped at the bird with her teeth, but it had flown off before she could've grasped it away. It had to be the familiar of whatever that rainbow blur was. Perhaps if the serval was a bit more mature, she'd have been able to relate to the bird. After all, it appeared to be a hunting partner just as Mahiri was to Farasi. Yet, Mahiri was rather immature as far as the spectrum went and so she went on growling.
"Ya dumb bird! Come down on the ground and try saying that again! Hmph!" Turning her head back towards her lion, her snarls turned to cheers as he narrowed in on a gazelle and then leaped at it, claws outstretched. He slammed it into the ground soon after the prey-beast was dead.
"Yay! Go Farasi! You're the best hunter that's ever been!" She squeaked as she rushed by the rainbow hunter, sticking her tongue out at what she know saw was a cheetah. No one could compare to her friend!
Farasi hadn't wasted any time in targeting the limping gazelle and felling it as soon as it was within reach. Slamming it to the ground as hard as he did certainly had it stunned and he ripped into his throat, severing its wind pipe to finish it off. Licking his lips as he drew back, he turned his gaze to his dear friend as she approached.
"See? Even when I have competition, I'm still the best." He growled playfully, flicking the tiny cat with his tail. She let out of mrr of amusement and batted it away, before jumping onto the gazelle and looking impatiently up at Farasi. With a slice of his claws, he tore into his stomach and with the skin peeled back, Mahiri was able to dig in to what lay underneath.
Now, speaking of his competition, he turned his gaze to see if he couldn't spy who had tried to interrupt his hunt. He didn't want to quarrel with them, but they were sure to earn a bit of respect, had they not fled at the sound of his roar. He scanned the area until he spotted a blue of color, like a rainbow running across the savanna. He stood up abruptly and took a step forward. It couldn't be... could it?

Farasi couldn't quite believe it, couldn't even begin to comprehend what was going on, before he saw her rushing towards him, heard her call his name and braced for impact just a few seconds before they collided. She bowled him over and he shifted his weight so that he wouldn't crush her.
And then they stilled and he was gazing up at her with wide eyes. "Vaiva..." He breathed and then he was leaning towards her, pressing his nose to hers and a happy rumble in his chest. "You're really here, aren't you? This isn't some trick of the light or mirage?"
It was now that Mahiri looked up from her meal, bloody muzzle peering closely at the entangled felines. She blinked, took in the scene and then sank her tiny claws into the meat beneath her, before finally sighing and leaping off the gazelle to approach her companion and his long, lost love. Although, looking at her now...
"Hey Farasi, I guess your long, lost love isn't exactly as lost as we've thought." She remarked and then to the cheetah, she inclined her head in a slight nod. "Hey there, the name's Mahiri. And if I'm not mistaken, you must be Vaiva, right? We've been traveling a long way to find.you."

Farasi had to believe it at her reply and her touch: this was indeed his precious Vaiva. He had found her at last. When she asked about Mahiri, he chuckled and shook his head. "Replace you? Never. Although I did nearly mistake her for you when I saw her on the horizon." He replied with a smile. At her next question, however, he sighed and shifted so that he was standing on his own, though still very near to the cheetah.
"That is a rather long story," He replied. "But if you'll not mind hearing if over a meal," He gestured to the carcass nearby with a paw, an open invitation for the group to eat. "Then I would be happy to tell it. I have a few questions to ask you, too." He told her. He didn't see their cubs with her, what had become of them? What had become of her? Was she taking care of herself? The familiar was new, though he supposed Mahiri was new to her too. He shook his mane slightly. One thing at a time, he told himself. This would truly be a long story.
The darn bird was back. Mahiri watched it through narrowed eyes and then approached the bird and hopped onto her hind legs, her front paws now resting on the cheetah-Vaiva's-shoulder. "Howdya do, Nasrin." She greeted, showing all of her pearly whites (though they were more like crimson reds, thanks to her tearing into the gazelle.) "Pleased to make your acquaintance." She looked to the cheetah she was leaning on and smiled at her too. "And yours too, naturally."
At the mention of food, she launched herself towards the gazelle again and started chewing on it. If she had to share with more folks now, she was going to make sure she got the best parts!
