A rarity in this dance, one of the flames hit their mark. A screech of pain from a ghastly source. The litwick did not have much of a body left, looking more like a thin twig of wax than the stout candle it had been at the beginning of the fight. And still the ghost thought it could win. Still, the ghost fought fire with fire and loosed another otherworldly flame towards its opponent. Again, Aria was careful to creep around the field of battle, careful to not attract attention yet. One way or another, this fight would end soon.

Indeed, the battle neared its climax. This time an indigo flame struck the hell pup and it burned deeply dispite the canine's typing. Both combatants were worn, and both needed the fight to end quickly. In despiration, Bael rushed into the darkness to close the distance again before letting loose another ember. Would it do the pup any good, or would it just lead him to doom?

If not doom, it was at least failure. Yet again the fiery pup had missed his mark, and yet again he was at the mercy of his foe. Sensing weakness in the living enemy, the litwick felt that a small tap should do the trick. Another small jolt would send them over the edge and leave their delicious life energy to be harvested, yes? And so, yet again the candle shot a bolt of electricity at its foe, and yet again Bael would be unable to evade the small amount of pain it would provide.

Aria watched as her partner was electrocuted again, and although the attack yet again did little damage, the girl was all too aware that Bael could not take much more abuse. As such, she had several choices, but only enough time for one option. She had a potion, but only one, and she couldn't guarantee finding another one if she needed it. In spite of the offer, she did not want to rely on the skills of that white-haired medic. She had two pokeballs, but that would leave her with two severely injured pokemon with the ability to heal only one of them. It would also leave her with one less pokeball, and she already had plans concerning what to use both of them on. Switching was an option, but a horrible one. Isolde wouldn't be able to handle any of the flames being shot around. Or, she could flee. With or without Bael. Somehow, that plan felt the worst, but one needed to realize when they should fight and when they should run.
The girl saw that Bael was preparing another attack and knew she needed to act now if she would act at all. "Bael!" she called out, and the hound looked at her in surprise. He hadn't realized his trainer had been moving during the battle, and so the new direction caught him off guard. "Come here! Now!" Even as she yelled, the girl was pulling out her only potion. It wouldn't do any good if her pokemon died, so she may as well use it now. As soon as the houndour was back by her side, Aria spritzed the seared flesh with the concoction. She gave a sympathetic wince when the pup whined and whimpered from the stinging liquid, but it was enough to get him back into the fight. Just in time, too, as the litwick had hurried to close the gap again and sought to startle the pup with an astonishing display.

Not only was Bael expecting a cheap shot, he was even hoping the litwick would try something. Without the reaction the candle had wanted, it was wide open to a return strike from the houndour. Bael opened his mouth wide and let his flame loose, leaving the litwick with only two choices: Stay and hope it could survive the blow, or move and try to evade the attack. The litwick chose to try and escape fiery wrath.

Flee, flee, flee from the canine and its trainer! The ghostly candle had thought it found an easy meal, but not only had the pup given it a hard fight, but it had the benefit of someone healing it! Of course, that didn't stop the litwick from sending off one more flame as a parting shot. But distance was growing between the candle and its foes. Even as they evaded the attack now, they'd have time for maybe one more attempt before the candle was gone for good.

Even though the flame hit, even though Bael was damaged, he was determined to try and finish the fight before his ghostly opponent got too far out of range. He shot off an ember of his own in hopes to actually defeat his enemy. The least he could do was gain some experience so that all the damage and the used potion wouldn't be for nothing. The question was whether his last attempt at an attack would hit or not.

No dice. The ghost quickly moved well out of range and kept floating deep into the cavern as fast as it could. It didn't take long before the trainer and her pup couldn't even see the glow of the litwick's flame. Even so, the duo waited a bit longer before Aria slumped against a wall and let out a sigh. "What a waste..." she muttered, highly displeased with the outcome of the battle. Maybe if it turned out differently, it might have been worth the effort. But it didn't and it wasn't, and now both trainer and pokemon needed a moment to rest before moving on.

After resting for a while, Aria pushed off the wall she was leaning against. "Okay, I'm ready... How about you?" She turned to look in Bael's direction, the dark canine having curled up near his trainer's feet. The flames from the battle had faded, and his dark fur blended in with the surrounding darkness too well. Aria glanced down at Bael as the duo continued forward. Her initial confidence was quickly fading. She had been confident that he might be able to handle whatever challenge might await them at the end, but now? She was not so certain. She was even less certain that Isolde would be able to manage whatever fight awaited them at the end of this admittedly short cavern. She wasn't entirely sure what they would have to face, but she knew Isolde's typing would likely hinder her more than help.

The duo was nearing the end of the cavern, and now more than ever Aria felt hesitant to move any further. She glanced back towards what she knew led to safety, to the flower field where that medic was testing trainers. She could go back. Get Bael, her ace, healed and try again. Partner up with a different trainer, or possibly even stay and help the medic test other trainers. She could turn back right now and give up.
...Or she could continue onward. At least see what was up ahead, see if it was anything to actually be scared of. Bael could probably take at least one hit from whatever guarded the exit. Isolde might take one or two. If it really was too dangerous, she could always run back. Bael could light her path, or she could risk using her flare. It wouldn't do her any good if she couldn't even survive long enough to find her way out of the void and back to the island. Heck, she wasn't even sure she'd end up back at the island if she did get out of whatever abyss she and her fellow students were trapped in.
Aria took a deep breath and held it for a moment as she tried to get her scrambled thoughts under control. Once she made up her mind, she slowly released the held air and looked back down the remainder of the dark cavern. There wasn't much left to travel. "...Might as well see what we're dealing with..." she muttered, her decision made. She then began walking again, Bael keeping pace beside her as they neared the exit.
