The eastern route seems to be an extension of a dark cavern, with rock formations that seemed to go up and up. The eeriness of this place is punctured time and again by a low wailing howl.
You have been warned of ghosts, so you have an idea of what to make of those sounds. Though still, the darkness is all encompassing ... a fire type pokemon can shorten this route by half by lighting up the path, a water type will be able to find it's way through at normal speed due to it's own ability to brave the darkness of water, and a grass type pokemon will double the distance ..due to it's incompability to connect with such a barren, lifeless place.
If you have neither, you will find yourself merely stumbling along hoping to find the exit in this endless gloom.

It didn't take long before the light of the flower field, whatever its source might have been, disappeared behind Aria and left the girl in pure darkness. Her breathing quickened and she could feel her body shudder on pure reflex. "E-e-easy... Th-this is n-nothing... N-n-nothing we can't ha-handle..." she stuttered under her breath as she fumbled around at her belt. It took a few tries to find the right spot, but she eventually felt her fingers brush against the smooth material of a pokeball and quickly grabbed hold. "B-Bael, light!" she commanded as a flash of white released her canine companion, briefly brightening the area before the duo were once again consumed by darkness.
Bael whimpered a bit at what his trainer had brought him into this time. What happened to the snow mountain? Surely he hadn't been stuck in his ball that long! "Light, please!" his trainer hissed, stress clear in her voice. Oh! Right! Bael obliged by letting out a controlled wisp of flame from his muzzle. It wasn't much, and he couldn't sustain it continuously, but as long as it wasn't a quick flash, it was enough to see by while it lasted, and each flame gave the two an opportunity to orient themselves. "Thank you. Now let's try to find a way through this place," Aria said before walking off into the darkness, her houndour pup keeping close beside her to provide his trainer with light the best he could.

For a moment, Aria felt sorry for whoever else might be following along behind her. Anyone that didn't have a fire type or some other pokemon that could light the way would have difficulty picking their way through the dark cavern. Even though she had to pause fairly often as Bael's embers were extinguished and relit, at least the light her canine companion could provide gave her some respite from the darkness. She had thought to have Bael try to catch some moss or other cave-growing greenery alight, but figured that such an attempt would be futile. Even if there was anything to burn, whatever ghosts might be hiding within the cave would probably put out the flames at the worst possible moments. Better to have a flame she could count on than one she couldn't.
As she continued through the cavern, Aria felt herself grow tired. Not that she was all that surprised, given that in the span of a few hours she was shoved from a helecoptor, stuck trudging down a snowy mountain, dragged down into the darkness, and now trudging through a dark, spooky cavern with barely a moment's rest in between. "Hold... Let's... Stop for a few minutes," she told her puppy pal before walking over to one of the stone walls of the cavern. Despite Bael's whimper of protest, Aria leaned against the wall to try and relax. "It's okay. We're okay. I just need to rest is all," she assured the pup.
After waiting, though, Aria didn't feel any better. If anything, she felt worse, like she was becoming more drained by the moment. "Strange..." she mumbled, then noticed something off in the distance. Something blue and flickering. "...Stop breathing fire for a moment..." Aria requested, and though it was odd for the situation, Bael complied and the cavern went mostly dark. Mostly, except for the blue flicker that seemed to see the returning darkness as an opportunity and started hovering towards the duo. Aria's eyes narrowed and Bael let out a sharp growl. "Come up with a nasty plot," the girl commanded as she readied herself against the candle ghost, a litwick that let out a giggle as it approached.

Aria couldn't really see what the candle pokemon was doing, just hovering there in the darkness, but she figured she might as well take the opportunity while it presented itself. "Melt it down with ember!" the girl commanded, and Bael barked once before spitting a bolt of flame at the ghost. Sure it wouldn't be all that effective due to litwick's affinity for fire, but damage would be damage, and with a head filled with dark thoughts, the attack was sure to do something to the ghost that just seemed to be... Waiting.

As if the cavern itself was conspiring against the duo, what left Bael's muzzle was the barest wisp of a flame, one that was soon swallowed by the darkness. Their foe let out a cheerful, high-pitched cackle as the indigo flame atop its wick, nearly the only thing Aria and her canine companion could see at this point, floated out of reach of the team. As the light floated away, Aria felt a chill tickle the back of her neck and shuddered in response. "A-another ember!" she quickly stuttered, hastily pointing in what she thought was the direction of the flame. Not that it mattered if she was a little off or not, as Bael could see for himself where the fire of his target was. A bark of confirmation and a growl of aggression were the only warnings the litwick had before the pup tried to belch out yet another bolt of fire.

Aria watched as the flame sailed off into the darkness, illuminating whatever sections of cavern wall and floor it passed. Eventually orange and red met blue and purple, and for a moment the colors mixed together. Aria had been hopeful, but her expression fell as the red and orange light disappeared and a new bolt of fire, this one an indigo color just like the one topping the litwick's head, flew towards where Bael's flame originated from. Ignoring the cackles and giggles echoing down the cavern, Bael and Aria moved in an attempt to evade the flame's path. Of course, both would have difficulty moving in the darkness, but some movement was likely better than none.

The flame failed to hit either the girl or her pokemon, and so both sides of the battle were little better off than when the encounter first began. A grumbled emitted from Aria's throat. "Hit it this time. Ember!" she commanded, sounding more frustrated than anything else. Bael didn't bark this time, but still let out a growl before belching more fire towards the litwick. If nothing else, anything in the area that might be combustible would probably be caught alight by at least one of the flames passed back and forth.

One red and orange flame sailed down the cavern, and one blue and purple flame sailed back up. If someone had been watching from afar, they might have thought some game of neon tennis was being played. For Aria and Bael, though, it was more of a hellish game of dodgeball, and while Bael was certainly quicker than his trainer, neither were exactly good at the game. Still, Aria certainly didn't want to get burned, and even a fire type like Bael could get hurt by a strong enough flame, so once again the duo needed to move to avoid getting caught by the ghostly fire.

This was going nowhere. Aria thought it, Bael thought it, and even the litwick down towards the end of the cavern was thinking it. A change of plan was needed. Too bad Bael didn't have any other actual attacks and Isolde was highly susceptible to fire attacks. "Since we can't change our attack, let's try changing the distance. Shoot another ember, then try to close in," the girl instructed as she prepared to move as well. A bark of confirmation, a bolt of fire, and this time the duo tried to close the distance between them and the litwick.

As luck would have it, the litwick had also decided a change of tactics was desperately needed. It floated out to properly attack the houndour up the cavern... And proceeded to be hit in the face by a small ball of fire! A devastating hit for most other pokemon, but for the litwick, it merely melted a small chunk of wax off around where its face was. But it did hurt, and the ghost thought he had just the bit of payback in store for his opponent. Rather than flames, this time electricity formed before flying towards Bael. Unlike the fires sent out before, the static bolt would bend and curve in flight until it struck its target. Escape was futile!

...Not that escape was all that necessary. The "attack" was barely more than a tingle when it collided with Bael, hardly worth the effort to try and outrun. In spite of being less effective, so far the houndour's attacks were far more potent than his opponent's. "Keep it up!" his trainer encouraged, and yet again the hell pup breathed more fire to burn the candle.

The flames passed close by the litwick, but they did not manage to actually hit the pokemon. It lost a millimeter of wax from the embers, or perhaps that was just wishful thinking on the part of the young trainer. Regardless, the ghost felt no ill effects from its brush with a live flame. If anything, it was all the more eager to prove its own flame's superiority by shooting another otherworldly ember back towards its foe. Just as before, Bael had to quickly bound to the side in an attempt to evade the flame, lest he find his fur singed.

The heated match between the two fire types continued as Bael yet again nimbly evaded the heat of his foe's ghostly flame. By now the canine did not require his trainer's advice to continue the fight as he only had one attack. Further mental preparation would be useless, as was lowering physical defenses by attempting to unnerve his foe. So, he would do as he had done for most of the fight and belch out yet another bolt of fire. Sooner or later, one of the fiery pokemon would burn out.

Yet again, the litwick evaded the flames, and yet again Bael only succeeded in making a fool of himself. It was becoming a rather sad display, the two pokemon shooting flames at one another but only rarely landing hits. At least it was a colorful display as the litwick's indigo flames passed by the more natural fires Bael belched out. The area was actually starting to become well lit as some of the flames took longer to die out than the others. Another purple and blue flame was added to the display, the only question being where it would land.
