INTRODUCTION

This ORP takes place one IC week after Red Sun Rises and Strangers and Kings. After the arrival of the new Abaholi, the pride continued its migration...minus almost all of its adolescent males. Umkhombo and his partners made it clear that any male old enough to fend for himself, who was not on a path to become an Ahluke or Enda, was to make themselves scarce. Any who didn't go willingly would have been chased, but not harmed unless they made greater force necessary. Unlike Bangizwe and Andhaka, these new Abaholi see no reason to let the young males hang around until they reach full adulthood.

The migration itself has been uneventful, and very nearly over! It is currently mid-afternoon, and with the heat setting in and the cubs at the end of their stamina, the Abaholi have called for an early end to the day's travel. The plan is to wake before dawn and finish the trek in the morning - ultimately, the pride will come to rest about a 5-hour walk from the Outpost. In the meantime, everyone's worked up a good appetite from all the walking, so several Cinga sent up their vultures to see what they could see. The pride has fallen a bit behind the wildebeest and zebra herds they're following, making them a poor option if anyone wants to eat before dark, but one vulture came back with a more promising lead: a small herd of gemsbok to the east. It's not exactly close, but it is closer...

So a hunting party has been dispatched to bring back some noms! Just watch those horns, yikes. This RP is for the hunting party, who at the open of this RP are about thirty minutes into their excursion, and expect to reach the herd within another thirty.

Found by a Cinga, this cub and her siblings have been taken in by the pride and will be nursed by whatever mothers will allow them to do so. None of the cubs will fully remember their mother - they might remember her incredibly vaguely, maybe even the jewelry she wore, but not fully. This also means they don't know who their extended family past each other is, or that they HAVE blood relatives past each other. One requirement for both cubs is that whoever wins her needs to find the cub a name reflecting her status as an orphan. Two named cubs are Wathola (Found) and Kuphela (Alone).

User Image Gemsbok! Gemsbok. Geeeemsbok. It was a fun word, Ukulambile liked it, and had mentioned as much with a giggle as the beginning of their trek...and would periodically think it to herself again, grinning about it every time. What she liked even more than their funny-sounding name was the way they tasted, and it had been ages and ages since she'd eaten one! It had been wildebeest, wildebeest, and more wildebeest lately, now that the gazelle were off to wherever they were off to. Still, anything was a vast improvement over the lean times of the drought, and she wasn't going to complain about what kind of prey there was after going so long without it. She'd been able to see her ribs, and not just see them, but count them! That just wasn't right, not at all. She was still a bit lean, in fact, at least to her own standards; always one to overindulge - and always willing to eat anything at least once - she had tended to carry a bit more weight than her sisters.

There was a bounce to the eager lioness' step as they moved ever closer to a good meal. A good meal of gemsbok! She skipped a stride and wriggled, voicing to no one in particular, "I can't wait. This'll be great, yeah?"

While there were many things to doubt about Ukulambile - cleverness, for instance, or tact - enthusiasm was not one of them.

User ImageUdaka was glad to get away from the body of the pride for a bit. The normally content lioness had been getting antsy with all the things that had been going on as of late. She was a joining rogue herself, but with the massive group of lionesses that suddenly appeared and the three new males taking over she couldn't help but feel like her home was going to go through a bit of turbulent times. So far it seemed split in terms of who was all right with the change and who was against it, but she counted herself in the camp of 'just hoping it settles eventually'.

A noise to her right made her swivel her head in the direction of the group she was walking with. A hunting accident a few months back had wounded her right eye, leaving her blind in it, so she kept her right side to the group of sisters that she walked with, her left on the outside to observe what she could. She didn't find that the missing eye hindered her any because she was still a very successful hunter, living up to her title with ease.

"So long as we are successful it will be great," she said to the bouncy Ukulambile walking not far away. It was always important to go in with a clear, level head. Optimism was fine but realism was needed at times like this. They had a lot of mouths to feed - a few less now that the adolescent males had been forced out - and they'd have to make a few extra kills to ensure everyone would have enough by the time the rest of the pride arrived.

User ImageHaving been a great deal of hunts she was hoping that they'd be upon a herd somewhat soon. She loved the thrill of the hunt and the excitement that coursed through her during the chase. Looking around she wondered if any of her sisters had made it into the group that had ventured out. Flicking her tail behind her she padded along, eyes searching for any sign of prey.

Thandiwe had decided that she would want to help with hunting the gemsbok. She wasn't a great hunter like the Omkulu but at least she knew how to do the job and maybe one day she would rise to that rank. For now, she was still content with what she was at and helping out when needed. Right now, they needed any able bodied member to help track and kill for the migration.

Following quietly from the others, the lioness watched the bouncy pale yellow lioness with curious eyes. How enthusiastic she was for this hunt and using her energy now wasn't exactly the best idea but she wasn't going to say anything really. Probably some pre-hunting jitters. She was also probably still a bit young.

Not really saying it out loud she did at least give a 'mhm' to the hopeful success of the hunt.

Mazuri was more than pleased to have gone along with some of the other lionesses in this hunt. Hunting was one of her favorite things to do, whether it was to feed her pride or simply to use as a pass-time. With all the changes happening in the pride, she was more than happy to fall back on a constant hobby.

Glancing around, she couldn't immediately see any of her litter sisters, nor could she see her dear friend and pride sister, Mokosh. Perhaps they were still following the hunting party? Mazuri had been so eager to leave that she maaaaay have ran ahead. It was just so tense and full of uncertainty with the new males about!

She did, of course, notice Ukulambile, who was practically bouncing about with excitement. Her attitude was a refreshing change and Mazuri flocked to her yellow pride sister with a smile upon her face.
"I'm glad to see you're so excited, I was beginning to think I was the only one, with all of our other pride sisters looking so solemn in comparison." She said with a grin, though she couldn't help adding, not unkindly, "Though I worry if the volume of your enthusiasm may alert the gemsbok to our presence and cause them to run off before we can get to them."

User Image There was a surprising, to her, lightness to Zola's step as she followed the others. If she could read minds, she'd have agreed with Ukulambile - Gemsbok was a fun word to say. She hummed for a bit, looking at the sky. There was a hawk up there, floating gently on the air. The spotted lioness wondered briefly, what was it like up there? What if she had been born a bird instead of a lion? To see the world from above, everything and everyone below her tiny... She'd be able to see all the prey, too.

"Think we'll see a giraffe today, while we're hunting?" That'd be something to tell the cubs of the pride - About seeing something as tall as a giraffe. "We should try and hunt one of those one day... Imagine how much meat must be on it!" That'd take skill, of course. The only time a giraffe was best hunted was when it was taking a drink. Otherwise it was near impossible to get to their throat, though Zola supposed they COULD cause injuries to the belly and legs that would bleed out and cause it a much slower death. The praise the hunting party that got a giraffe would probably be ALMOST as grand as the praise of those who hunted a hippo!

"Of course we'll be successful!" the Umzingeli chirped. "We have an Enkulu with us, don't we?" Ukulambile simply couldn't fathom that they would be unsuccessful, not when she was this hungry and they were going to hunt gemsbok! Everything would be fine, just like it usually was. That water buffalo hunt notwithstanding. She preferred not to think about that. She'd been around a good while, and had fully-grown cubs of her own - although Inkosana was gone now, that was too bad - and she'd seen a lot, but what had happened to Nolaka...that was the most awful thing she'd ever seen.

"Nah, we're not close enough yet I don't think," she responded to Mazuri, "That vulture said they were a good ways away. Lot closer than the wildebeest, yeah, but not like...super close."

"I would totally eat a giraffe!" Ukulambile agreed with Zola. "Maybe we should have an Mkhulu again! We should ask the Abaholi, yeah? Y'know, we're gonna be up by the red-pelts, I wonder if they'd wanna come too?"

Unlike some of her pride-sisters, Ukulambile wasn't suspicious of the Firekin (honestly, there wasn't much she was suspicious of). They were big and spent a lot of time dueling each other, which was very fun to watch. And their ambassador, Su, was nice enough, and they had a couple of Busisa who'd been Firekin. Well, now just one. Poor Umthunzi.

Migration was always an exciting time in Umama Nenkani's opinion. Add to that the recent shift in power.. well, she had energy to spare! She might find she had overdone it by the time they reached their destination but that was something to worry about later, not now. There was no way she was letting the others go hunting for her. She was more subdued than some of the others, smiling as she watched Ukulambile, Udaka and Mazuri chattering away near the head of the group.. though she decidedly put herself in place near Thandiwe.

"A giraffe, hmm?" she repeated thoughtfully while Ukulambile started to go on about a Mkhulu and the Firekin, "Perhaps afterward, we could send our new Abaholi off to hunt for us. We didn't get to see them in action, after all."

If they could pull off a Mkhulu, that would surely be a satisfactory hunt to precede a Kwa. The only disappointing side of having one so soon is that Umkhombo and his friends were still fresh from the Roguelands and would surely still be completely capable of hunting.. it might put poor Kuhasa at a disadvantage. It might be less entertaining and more educational, perhaps good for comparison the following year when they had made themselves nice and comfortable. Ha!

She was among the quiet ones trailing the back of the hunting party. Not necessarily out of timidity or even habit; just lost in her own thoughts.

They weren't hunting the wildebeest. That bothered Mokosh more than it should have. If she was honest with herself, really honest, she still very much wanted to sink her claws into that herd. After all, among them was still one with her sister's final claw-marks upon its broad back.

Mo would know that one on sight - she had to. When they did finally hunt the wildebeest, that was the one she would be all too eager to kill. It was completely revenge and not even the slightest bit about feeding the pride. She was smart enough to acknowledge that and recognize that it was quite selfish of her, and foolish enough not to care in the least.

She ran to catch up with the front of the group, rubbing against Mazuri as she drew even. The smile she flashed was geniune, though also helped to bury her own reservations. Thank goodness for the younger lioness' company on this hunt. Mokosh felt like she was going to need her friend's good humor to keep away the gloom. She could only catch the tail end of the others' conversation... For the creature's sake, she hoped any giraffes stayed far away from their party. Her smile hitched on one side. With all the recent excitement, she could see them changing targets rather readily...

The newly dubbed Umama, Kokulzawa, padded about between the other lionesses. Although they of course did not all come under her purview, it was a part of who she was to make sure that all of the lionesses were safe and well. Her dark coat felt warm under the bright sun of the day and while she was thinking about the musings of the others in the hunting party, gemsbock, giraffe, both pretty dangerous in their own rights she spotted one of her younger siblings.

Making a beeline for Yimvelo She head butted her sister gently on the shoulder "Keep your butt away from horns." She chuckles and circles around, checking each lioness in turn. She didn't fail to notice that a few of the lionesses were on the slender side, or even that one couldn't see through one eye. This was slightly concerning to her, she truly couldn't imagine not being able to see completely. Still she kept these thoughts to herself and decided to mingle.

"Keep your heads girls, excitement is all well and good but just remember those horns can be deadly."

User Image The striped lioness watched Ukulambile with a smile.Yithemba was glad she wasn't the only one brimming with excitement, though she herself tried her best to keep it contained. Gotta play it cool, after all. Gotta be professional. She didn't want to be remembered for being the giddy ball of enthusiasm that was brought on the hunt (not that she would ever say there was anything wrong with that). The lioness wanted to be remembered for being great. And for that she had to be cool. 'Like a winter breeze, Yi.'

The dark lioness had been lingering in the back of the group, looking over each of the individuals on this hunting extravaganza. The gaze lingered on the Enkulu in particular. No better way to be great that to study those who were already proven to be so, right?

Yi quickened her pace, trotting up to the bulk of the group to listen in to the conversation, arriving just in time to hear talk of the Firekin and Nenkani's mention of sending the Abaholi on their own hunting quest. She grinned, keeping pace near her. She liked the progressive Umama. Not that Yithemba disliked any of the Omama (though the she found herself a bit more self-conscious around the more conservative ones). She decidedly felt the most comfortable around Nenkani. "A Kwa would be some great fun," she started. The bounce had decidedly not left her step. A Kwa. A great idea, since she had yet to decide which of the new males was her favorite.

But, she reminded herself quietly, there was a better time and place for all that. 'Focus,' Yi scolded silently.

Disin walked with slow, measured paces alongside her fellow pride members. It had been a tough adjustment at times since her original pride, the Jahy Sarlarin, had disbanded– though it had been quite some time since it dissolved. She had joined the Ithambo'hlabathi with many of the other newly displaced Qyrhyeshti, but had failed to make any real connections or friendships with any of the Bonelands lionesses.

Hopefully going on this group hunt would force her into some kind of bonding experience or... something. Her keen purple eyes were fixed on the horizon. Was it the talk of giraffe getting to her or.. did she really smell something??

"Does anyone else hear that?" She asked broadly to the hunting party. Up ahead she heard roars, none she recognized.

She strained her eyes to see, but whatever– whoever– it was, was too far off. She quickened her face and glanced back to make sure she was being followed.

"I have to agree with that statement. Enthusiasm is good but we should be more quiet as to not scare off the herd. We have mouths to feed and with them running off.... that's a bit more difficult to accomplish." The lioness spoke up giving up a piece of her mind. Again, enthusiasm was all good and well but there were too many mouths to feed to lose this. The thought of the Abaholi hunting for them however was actually a somewhat good idea. Would be nice to see them in action and how they handled the situation at hand.

"A giraffe would be fascinating." She agreed, however talk of the red pelts. She was still iffy about the pride despite the ambassador and the ones who had joined them. She glanced sideways at Nenkani then back over at Kokuzalwa. "Beware of the feet too, a kick can do some damage as well."

At the mention of a sound however Thandiwe began to listen to the world. What was Disin hearing that she wasn't? Maybe she was getting hunting jitters like some of the others?
