[Round 3] Vasuman vs Mate'moto

Round 3 information:

- The winner of this duel will be progressed to the semi-final for a chance to win a higher rank [legate/brigadier/general].
- The lion/ness who is defeated will become a Captain once the tournament is over.
- The winner is the lion/ness who rolls the highest number across 5 turns. An extra turn must be rolled by each player to break a tie. [Reminder of rolls: 1 - miss, 2 - bide/glancing attack, 3 - hit]
- Even if you rolled higher than your opponent, if you fail to edit your rolls with an RP response, your character is disqualified.

The deadline for this RP is: Tuesday 4th April.

Move 1: Hit

Well.

Mat stood at the edge of the sands where the next battle was to be fought, tail swishing in irritation. Apparently she and one other lion had an extra battle to go through to see them to the next round. She wasn't sure why she and this male had been selected, but she wasn't happy about it. The lioness was sure her opponent couldn't be, either. Having to jump through one extra hoop to reach the same level as the three other contenders? Bah...she could do it.

"Whoever wins this little extra round had better go on to be the General," she growled, letting her irritation be known to Vasuman. He was the brother of one of the Regents so she supposed it was nice to know he wasn't immune from this little random selection process, but it didn't mean she was going to go any easier on him. Letting her irritation fuel her, she let out a snarl and darted forward, eager to get the spar underway. She charged at Vasuman full-tilt, ready to slam her shoulder into his chest.

First Move - 2, Bide/Glancing Hit



Vasuman was surprised. He hadn't gotten this far, which made him a Captain, when he was fairly certain he would be a Soldier for the entirety of his life. He was surprised to find his opponent someone who willingly spoke to him at the start of the battle, while the two before her had only made feral sounds before attacking him. In his surprise, he didn't react quickly enough when he saw her coming towards him and suddenly he felt a great impact on his chest that sent him staggering back, fumbling over his paws.

A snarl ripped out of him and he thrust out a paw in retaliation, but he only grazed her flank before she was out of reach again. Narrowing his eyes, he got to his paws, tail lashing before he began to circle her around the dueling pit.

Move 2: Glancing blow

Mat felt her shoulder connect with the large male which sent him enough off balance that her retreat mostly worked. She felt his paw nick her on her hindquarters as she darted back, bright eyes peering out at the dark red lion from her own black pelt. They were here for a reason, she thought to herself as they circled one another. Perhaps they were the best of the best and they wanted this fight to happen now to give others a chance. Either way, she couldn't let her guard down. She was battling yet another soldier and she knew that Vasuman wasn't going to go down easy either.

This wasn't a match where biding her time was going to do her any favors. Vasuman wasn't going to let an opening escape him and neither was she. She darted in quickly but not as full-on as she had at first, putting on the breaks to swipe at the male's paws, hoping to get him to hop back and away from her attack.

Second Move - 2, Bide/Glancing Hit

Vasuman wasn't quite sure what to expect from the other lioness when she suddenly came forward at him. He braced for impact only to realize at the last second that she was swiping at his paws! He hissed at her, raising one of them in time to avoid being hit, but the other took a full swipe and he stepped two steps back, before realizing he was being shooed away.

Tricky, tricky, he thought, lunging forward, making as though he was going to hit her full on. Instead, he glided to the left and nudged her shoulder with his, hoping to knock her off balance as he went on until he ended up behind her. She would have to turn to attack him now, which ought to give him some time to react... Assuming she didn't outright kick him.

Move 3: Miss

He was quick, Mat had to admit. For lions of the Firekin's size it was sometimes hard to find a large lion that had speed to match their strength. Often they were lumbering brutes rather than quick on their feet, but even soldiers had to learn how to avoid attacks that were simply too powerful to take full force.

Settling herself onto her paws and getting her balance back, Mat found herself being charged at. She lowered her head, ready to pounce, but saw the weight change at the last moment. The nudge to her shoulder would have sent her tumbling, but thanks to her quick reflexes she managed to absorb most of the blow and only stagger a few paces to the left.

Or at least, that was the plan. As she staggered she reached out to try to catch Vasuman while he ran by, but her swipe was a little too late and it sent her reeling. It took her a moment to catch her balance, but she found herself on her paws, facing the other lion once more. Thank the gods for reflexes and her training.

Third Move - 3, Hit

Vasuman was satisfied with his feint attack, content that she lost her balance twice. He was discontented with the fact that his opponent had managed to regain her balance, but some part of him also looked upon her with approval. She was a worthy opponent and for the first time in the Tournament, he seemed to be rising to the occasion, rather than tripping over his paws and missing every blow.

They faced off one another, Vasuman still, save for the twitching of ears and the lashing of his tail, before he finally took a chance and ducked his head, running at her with a mighty roar. He wasn't entirely certain where he had hit her, since he had closed his eyes upon preparing for impact, but he was sure that had bowled her over and knocked her off her paws, because he had also been knocked off his own paws and was rather winded from his effort as he struggled to get back onto his feet again. He managed the act, though he had a bit of sway in his body now and there was a ringing in his ears. Bother.

Move 4: Hit

Mat bared her teeth as Vasuman charged in for another attack, this time with a roar that seemed to split the air. She returned his vocalization with her own, twin noises filling the air. She was going to go down without a proper battle and this wasn't over yet. Although he had her in size she knew that wasn't everything when it came to battles. In this case, though, she certainly felt his strength as he plowed into her, knocking her from her paws. She slid a few paces in the sand before getting to her feet, her chest and shoulder aching from where Vasuman had slammed into her. It seemed his own attack had thrown him from his paws as well.

Using the daze Vasuman seemed to have knocked himself into, Mat took the chance to charge forward. She ignored the ache in her shoulder as she ran forward, striking at his head with a paw. If he was already rattled she was sure that was the area to aim for. Hopefully she could keep him on the ropes, so to speak.

Fourth Move - 1, Miss

If the ringing in his ears before had been a gentle, irritating buzz, they were sure banging around in his skull now, thanks to the clobbering his head received. He lashed out a paw, trying to attack, but missing completely and lurching forward in a most ungraceful manner. No, no, no! This wasn't how he was going to go down! He shook himself, blinked and snarled at the other lioness.

If he was to go down at all, he was going to do it with dignity, darn it!

Move 5: Hit

After landing her hit, Mat was quick to disengage far enough that any wild strike might go wide. And wide it went, thankfully, because she knew that fighting from desperation or pain was sometimes more dangerous than a well thought-out move. She had seen prey animals take down well-trained hunters before and it wasn't a pretty sight.

She didn't keep her distance for long, though. With one more roar she charged forward, eager to end the spar. She lowered her head as she charged, throwing her weight into her shoulder and into Vasuman's chest to try to topple him to the sand once again.

Fifth Move - 1, Miss

As seen in previous duels, when Vasuman got desperate, he got messy. He missed, he fumbled and he usually won the duel by a hair. It appeared that this wasn't going to be the case here, because when his opponent roared, he echoed her roar, only to be bowled over completely. He didn't bother trying to retaliate from that and contented himself to laying on the ground for a long while. He considered trying to fight her more, but the ringing had turned into more of a throbbing and he didn't want to sustain anymore head damage, thank you very much.

So, he got to his paws after a while and smiled at his opponent.
"It was a good duel." He said. "The victory is yours." He moved past her and nudged her gently, for his own body couldn't handle much more than that without protesting its soreness. "Remember, you have to become the next General now." He remarked with a smirk, before departing from the sand pit.

Mat stood a safe distance from Vasuman, breathing heavily as she waited for him to rise from the sands. It seemed he was done, though, which allowed her the luxury of relaxing for a moment. She let out a slow breath before lifting her head, ears back in a defiant way. She had gone an extra round against a formidable opponent and come out on top.

His honest-sounding congratulations allowed her a tiny smirk in return, and the nudge had her pushing back in a teasing way.

"That's right," she agreed. Had she been the loser she would have said the same thing and she would have been roaring and cheering for him the rest of the tournament. It seemed she had one more on her side now. Pleased with herself and the outcome, she headed off of the sands as well to rest.
