Well, that was it then. The mighty corporal had been defeated in the first round and he hadn't even come 'top' of the losers, as far as he knew. He wasn't sure whether it was better or worse to have lost against the 'favourite' but despite being uncharacteristically humble in the arena, he was now moping about on the outskirts of the training grounds, grumbling lowly under his breath.
Life just had a way of knocking you flat. And Azar felt like he'd had his fair share of knocks by now. Stupid life making things so damned difficult all of the time! Where was his lucky break? When would his time be to rise up and shine and make everyone realise that he was a great Firekin?
Growling, he swept a paw over the sand and dropped down onto it with an aggressive huff.
Not too far away, Heti was weaving through the crowds in an attempt to find his father - and maybe his sister, too, as apparently she had also signed up. Unlike many Firekin who might be eager to show off their victory, Heti seemed a little embarrassed by it. He'd not only won, but he'd won quite well and had been met with some surprise when he'd kindly said he wished to go no further.
Surprise might have been putting it kindly. He was worried now that the others might think him weak or cowardly for stepping out at this early stage. But he had his reasons and, ironically, he was more afraid of winning and potentially passing his father in rank.
And the longer he sought his family members the more worried he became that their outcomes had not been the same as his.
