This subforum is to be used for all in-character RP that takes place in Western Weyr. If you are planning an open RP all we ask is you make sure people know where the thread is taking place, to avoid confusion. If an RP makes it way from the Weyr to another Hold or Hall, that's fine, but if it continues to go on at length we do as you make a new thread in the appropriate Hold & Hall subforum.

Please use the appropriate Subject Heading when setting up an RP in the suboforum.

[PRP] = Private RP i.e. [PRP] A Sunny Day (D'mon & Valas)
[ORP] = Open RP i.e. [ORP] Let's Dance! (Everyone!)
[SRP] = Solo RP i.e. [SRP] Foggy Heart (C'nat)

Private RPs are meant for only a select group of writers and their characters.
Open RPs mean anyone is welcome to jump in and play!
Solo RPs are written up only by the writer about their characters.

Western Weyr

Location: On the western-most island of the Western Continent

Weyrwoman: Hestina of green Treth (Fated Fable Staff NPC)
Weyrleader: R'mor of bronze Junenth (Masterharper Staff NPC)
Weyrwoman Second: Elysia of gold Sheyoth (Masterharper Staff NPC)
Weyrleader Second: K'tos of brown Minoth (Masterharper Staff NPC)

Headman: Casgar (Fated Fable Staff NPC)
Assistant Headwoman: Adoptable!
Weyrlingmaster: Liat of Blue Orioth (Staff NPC)
Assistant Weyrlingmaster(s): Adoptable!
Candidatemaster: A'ral of Green Zinath (Fated Fable)
Assistant Candidatemaster(s): Adoptable!

Western Weyr Council: Made up of the Weyrwoman, Weyrleader, Weyrwomen Second, Weyrleader Second, Headman, Weyrlingmaster, Candidatemaster, Wingleaders, and one non-ranking representative's from each color group. Non-ranking representatives are voted in every two Turns around Turn's End/Turn's Beginning.

The Council gets together when called forth by the Weyrwoman or Weyrleader, or any five Council members call upon an emergency meeting. There are scheduled quarterly meetings to address any grievances or concerns, or to discuss upcoming rank changes.

Size: Small but growing population!

Hestina and R'mor are an interesting pair. As a green rider, Hestina gets no amount of flack of her position running the liberal Western Weyr -- but she has been elected for the past seven Turns, so she seems to be doing something right!

She was not an original Western Weyr native, which is perhaps what makes her appeal to the population. Not because she brings outside ideas, but because she truly believes in what Western Weyr stands for and represents. Hestina fought tooth and nail to work her way up the chain. Equality is everything to her, and she feels that everyone in Western should be treated fairly, and have equal opportunity. This can cause issue with individuals who might have more conservative views, or who somehow feel as if they have a born right to some sort of rank or title.

She works well with the council but doesn't always get along well with her appointed Weyrsecond, Elysia. The former tends to be a bit of a work-a-holic, while the latter was only newly brought into the fold and is easily overwhelmed. A lack of gold-riders meant the council's pickings were slim, and it's well known Elysia was voted in mostly out of the council's desire for a goldrider to be Hestina's second. Eysia feels she's nothing more than a mouthpiece for the green rider, and her gold nothing but secretary to the Weyr -- what Treth says, Sheyoth commands.

Hestina feels as if she must continuously prove herself to the Weyr and Pern as a whole. Western Weyr has always had a bit of a questionable reputation given its progressive nature, but this woman truly feels they have it right. Those best fit for the job should be given the role -- but as Elysia's rise to power proved, the system can be influenced by outside fears or desires. Western Weyr has always had a traditional gold and bronze rider on the Council, which can make some white, green, and blueriders suspicious.

R'mon, for his part, is a relaxed Weyrleader. As a Western born native, he's well attuned to how the Weyr functions. He often tries to play peacemaker between Hestina and Elysia, to relative good success. He's approachable, charismatic, charming, and truly believes in taking care of the continent and its people.

He's attempted to recruit riders from Northern and Southern,to invite them to fill out his Weyr's ranks, and is currently attempting to scour the continent for a viable source of firestone. Importing is not just expensive, but it also eats up valuable time -- sending Wings out to pick up the stuff and deliver it means less time drilling. He prefer to call planet-wide Searches -- should any of his riders find a Candidate, no matter where they're beholden, he is happy to sweep them away. This can get him into trouble from some of the other Weyrs, but it hasn't yet stopped him from doing so.

Between the two of them, R'mon and his Second are often diplomats to other Holds, Halls, and Weyrs -- to recruit, to negotiate, and if nothing else, to keep Western Weyr's ideals ever reaching.

Description: Western Weyr was the last official Weyr to be created on Pern. It was crafted well after the end of the 9th Pass -- an what should have been the end of Thread all together. There was a great expansion with the end of Thread: new lands and islands to be better explored; new technology to develop; new ideas to take root. Western Weyr was created after many dragonriders, holders, and crafters took to settling the Western Continent. It had begun as a Weyrhold, but the dragonrider population exploded over the Turns, and it eventually was renamed to be an official Weyr. Given it's remote location, it's views on the world are quite different from the mainland Northern an Southern continents.

In Western Weyr, positions of power are given to the most suitable person. While the names of ranking positions have more or less remained the same, they did away with the old rules. Queen flights no longer dictate who will run the Weyr. Instead, it's a position voted upon by the Weyr. Individuals can be nominated to the Weyr Council, and the Council then votes. It isn't a perfect system, and so far the Council has always kept a gold and bronze rider near the top -- something that has not gone unnoticed by the Weyr or its neighbors--, but it does allow for green, blue, and brown riders to have better opportunity to rise in power should they wish it.

It's common for riders of any color to be promoted to Wingseconds and Wingleaders. Furthermore, Western Weyr has seen a boost of women Impressing browns and blues compared to more conservative Weyrs, and Candidates are often allowed to stay a Candidate up to their 30th turn. Age is only a number, after all, and they prefer to give their dragonets a wide selection. White dragons have also been hatched at the Weyr, as their rules with interfering with eggs is less restrictive. White dragons have also been welcomed, unlike some Weyrs that turn them away due to their significantly smaller size. Equality and progress are what Western Weyr traditionally stands for, and it tends to be looked upon as a safe haven.

Unfortunately, the island isn't entirely paradise. Unlike the Northern and Southern continent, grubs were never planted on Western, making it highly susceptible to Thread. Furthermore, Western Weyr hasn't yet tapped into a natural firestone mine. Any firestone has to be imported, though current leadership is hoping local miners might discover a vein soon. The neighboring Hold's have recently found themselves at the mercy of local pirates, there's rumor of some feral dragon camps hanging out in the southern jungles, and to add icing to the cake, wild felines and an aggressive form of native tunnelsnakes makes the continent troublesome.

The term wild west is appropriate for those who come to Western Weyr. It's young, it's different, and the land isn't nearly as settled or developed as the Northern Continent, or even parts of Southern.

Notes of Interest: The most progressive and liberal Weyr on Pern, but also isolated. It's currently one of the smallest Weyrs on Pern, and on one of the most untamed wilds. Life for those at Western comes with its own risks and troubles.

Climate
The small continent is split in two thanks to a channel that cuts through its middle. The continents two major holds sit on opposite sides of the channel, and are quite different in their ideologies.

Western Weyr is located on the western half of the Continent in a caldera that formed not far from the coastline. It's elevation isn't nearly as high as High Reaches, and the weather is more temperate. To the east are the plains and plateaus, with semi-arid climates. The coast line is very mild and often gets hit with heavy winter rainstorms. Snow is very rare and can be found only in the northern most tip of the continent and its islands.

The southern most tip of the Continent and its island chains are sub-tropical.

The eastern side of the island can find desert landscape, similar to Igen. Only near the coasts of the ocean, and along the river and channel does the land turn more hospitable with plains and deciduous forests. Grubs have not taken to the continent, which means Threadfall infesting into the land is a common threat.

Earthquakes and tremors are a bit more common particularly on the southern island chains. Tropical storms and hurricanes are not uncommon, but they tend to affect the flatter eastern Island than the far West.

Dragonriders wishing for more tropical climates can skip to any of the southern island chains -- some of which are quite remote. For those hoping for cooler weather, the northern most islands tend to offer winter-friendly weather during the appropriate season.
