Sullivan couldn’t help but slow down as they entered on to Royal Avenue, a slow grin forming across his face as he spotted the Battle Royal Dome not far in the distance. He was all too familiar with the place; Levi had brought him and some of his siblings here from time to time to see the competitions when they were younger. Even when they were a bit older, they’d paid a few visits; it’d been what? A few months since the last time he’d seen a competition? He’d come with the twins and Hannah at the time. It was good fun before the pair semi-ruined it with a double-teamed body slam attempt.
He hated that. They made it a habit to gang up on him when they could. It might’ve been in good fun but well… it was agitating all the same. He swiped the annoyance from his mind and focused more on the pleasant memories that the area brought instead. Maybe he’d even pay a visit to the dome and see if anything exciting was going on!

The place was the same as ever; which was impressive as it’d expanded a while ago. There was a Malasada shop now and a marketplace they’d added to bring in more activities (and probably revenue) for the locals to participate in. That and the original Thrifty Megamart over on Ula’ula have been destroyed by the island’s guardian deity. Or so the story went; he’d never considered the guardian’s to be territorial but apparently sacred land was off the market for building on.
Then again, Tapu Village was a wreck too. If anything, these were just historical testaments to the dangers of inciting the guardian’s wraths. Wreckage. It made for a healthy amount of fear and respect for the islands they resided on.
Sullivan shook his head and focused back on the task at hand. While he wanted to visit the dome, he also wanted to pay a visit to the market to make some purchases. The megamarket was huge and probably had tons of options that would help him and his team overall. If anything, he wanted to make sure he had a healthy amount of healing supplies at his disposal in the event things took a turn for the worse. Those trials, they were something else. It was really no wonder Team Skull existed; losing them could end up really crushing your resolve.
Not him though. And if there was anything he wasn’t going to do, it was end up joining a loser team like Team Skull. Not if he had a choice. Become some punk thug with a chip on their shoulder… peh. What a joke! Even if he didn't complete the challenge, there were other things he could do; wanted to do. Like become a nurse to help pokemon; that was something worth while and something he was still interested in. And if that didn't pan out? Maybe an explorer or something... finding secrets others had missed. There was always something new being discovered after all; he could get in on that!

It was hard to keep his eyes from going wide in surprise as Sullivan stepped into the Thrifty Megamart. It was big on the outside, but the towering shelves gave the inside the appearance of vastness that he wouldn’t have expected. There were items upon items; from berries, to medicine., to battle items to technical machine discs… there was quite the variety for the interested trainer and with signs plastered around detailing sales, great for the wallet too.
He grabbed one of the baskets available (just in case) and Ulani decided to jump from his shoulder to ride in it. He gave her a little grin as she chirped, eyes just as wide as his has been as she eyed all the delicious treats that were available. Maybe they could grab some snacks too; he needed to grab a water bottle or two for his adventures and maybe another notepad for writing in so he wasn’t wasting the paper in his sketchbook. It kind of ruined his system to have random pages with speech scrawled on them in between the well detailed map pages.
Strolling through the store with Ulani in the basket and Junpei close at his heels, the blue-haired man browsed the goods and made a few selections. Since they’d be training, he stocked up on healing goods and some items to help his team get stronger and of course snacks and goods for the trip. The basket was about half full (not counting Ulani) by the time they made it to the counter. Fiddling with his funds, Sullivan paid and absently thanked the woman behind the counter in sign. He noted she;d asked him a few questions but Ulani had distracted him causing him to miss it. He noted a rather disapproving look because of it and felt bad. Those were the downsides though; where others could direct their gaze somewhere else and still pay attention with their ears, he had to go with one or the other. Looking away for a moment meant a wealth of conversation lost.
Oh well. Tucking his wallet and items away, Ulani returned to her place on his shoulder as they headed out, happily munching away at a granola bar that she’d managed to convince him to purchase as one of his snack options. With shopping out of the way, Sullivan mulled over paying a visit to the Battle Done or not. He really wanted to but... they also needed to get training.

It took a lot of convincing, but eventually Sullivan decided that he needed to move along. As much as he wanted to check out the Battle Dome, he wanted to get the next trial out of the way. Because once he’d done that he could head back to Melemele and challenge the kahuna. He could do the same here as well… thinking about it there were a lot of challenges to take on, weren’t there? It made him excited to think about and even more motivated to move along.
With Ulani and Junpei in tow, he took a moment to look over the maps available and pinpoint where he needed to go next. Akala wasn’t hard to navigate but the routes could overlap and take you in circles if you weren’t paying attention. Route 7; right that was where they were going and then up to the Wela Volcano Park. Perfect. With that settled, the young man gave a single glance back at the Royal Avenue before setting off to resume his journey.

Adder's heart was pounding, and suddenly, he wasn't so absorbed in his thoughts. Not when he was too busy panicking, panicking over the little pokemon that had just slipped away. How, how had that just happened? It was impossibly fast. It wasn't like Puff could move quickly, but one moment, it was cheerfully bobbing in front of him, and the next, it was twenty feet ahead. It wasn't teleportation-- Adder had just been too slow to react. The pokemon hadn't run off before. Wandered, sure, but that had been his own carelessness in not paying attention. If it were any other pokemon, Adder would think it was trying to escape-- and if Cling could speak, he'd probably voice his support of the idea. But that wasn't in the cosmog's nature, and Adder was sure if he could just catch up with it, before someone saw it, or recognized it, he coudl stuff it back into seclusion, maybe recall it to its pokeball, where it would be safe. It wasn't like he could train with it to make it stronger on it's own, after all...

Lungs burning, Adder ducked and wove through the city, before leaping at the pokemon. He felt it hit his chest and his arms wrapped around it, but the realization that his feet were off the ground only came second to that. Rubbing his still very sore arm, Adder moved towards the pokecenter. As his pokemon got healed, he eyed the pokemart, and after a moment, drifted over, not to buy something, but to see if he could place an order. So, well.... to buy something, but not directly from the shop. He waited around after his pokemon had healed for the package to arrive, and recalled pikachu for the moment as he headed out. Reluctantly, he released Puff, and held up the item he'd bought-- a new pokeball. "This is gonna help make you stronger, alright? So... don't try running again," he insisted. Somewhere, he knew that wasn't why Puff had run-- he knew the pokemon hadn't been unhappy, or rebelling, but.... somehow he helped this would somehow convey something else, and get the pokemon to settle down. Just a bit.

Rotom was right, Royal Avenue was definitely the kind of place that Naomi would enjoy! Entering the area, he marveled at how adorably small the area was, though it retained within it a sense of comfort. Done with flower spectating, for now at least, Naomi turned his attention to the other places of interest Royal Avenue had to offer. Directly north of the flower garden was a rather impressively large building, with a rather curious, and colorful, logo on it. "Battle Royal Dome," Rotom chirped, as punctual with his information as ever. "The name gives it away, but it's a place where trainers can compete in four-way battles. It's a big deal, apparently, they've even got some masked weirdo promoting it, calls himself The Masked Royal -- real original, that one." What he didn't add in was how flimsy a disguise it was, for a certain local hotshot, honestly why did he even bother. But, Rotom wasn't given much time to stew, as he was quick to catch the glimmer in Naomi's eyes.

"Oh no you don't." Rotom zipped forward, getting into Naomi's face, a stern, and slightly annoyed, expression set across his screen. "I was not--""Yes you were," he insisted. "I could tell by the look in your eyes." Naomi bowed his head, he'd been caught. "I'm tired of just watching you battle person after person, over and over again. Besides, you come to Alola just to battle did you? You need to finish this next trial and then take a break from battling, for both our sakes." Keeping his head bowed, Naomi didn't argue, nor did he speak up about how he had already decided to take a break after facing Kiwae, and instead nodded his head. "You have a point," he admitted, eyes peeking up just a tad to check Rotom's facial expression. His words seemed to quell the pokemon, and his irritation had faded away, leaving behind just sternness, which Naomi could deal with. "I know I do," the pokemon remarked, then turned sharply and began floating away from the trainer, presumably to continue ahead. Naomi followed along. "Besides," Rotom spoke up, though kept face ahead. "It's not like you can't come back here and check the place out, if you're really interested in it."
Naomi considered this before he nodded, though he was aware that Rotom could not see it, "You are right again."

Seems that this place had stayed relatively the same since the last time she’d gotten to visit with Amá and Azhé’é, hell she remembered when it had still been essentially just the huge stadium that was the centerpiece for the area.”Well, this is quite the cute little miniature city~”Orpheus commented, taking in the new sights, sounds, and smells all around them as they passed the Pokemon Center and walked into the circular shaped area that looked like a small garden full of pink flowers. The Zoroark bent down in front of a patch, leaning in and taking a whiff of the light floral perfume that filled the area. ”Well, believe it or not the avenue wasn’t always like this,” Zoey commented, gesturing towards the huge stadium that seemed to tower over everything, ”It used to be just that stadium there, but as Battle Royales got more popular and it brought in more tourists the place eventually expanded to include all this other stuff. Mainly the garden, shops, restaurants, n’ the big ol’ Thrifty Megamart over there, other than that it looks like this place hasn’t changed all that much.” Orpheus listened carefully as he admired the flowers, tempting as it was to pick one he wouldn’t want to ruin such a beautiful and apparently carefully coordinated display. Clearly whoever made this had worked quite hard on it, it would be a disrespect to the artist to disturb such an extravagant piece of art, after all!”Battle Royales? What exactly does that entail?”he inquired as he turned his attention away from the garden and towards Zoey. Apparently such a thing only existed here in Alola as he had never heard of such a thing anywhere else.
”Well, to put in in simple terms a Battle Royale is essentially a four-way Pokemon battle, but it’s everyone against everyone else. No teams involved or anythin’, just an all-out ********’ free for all,” she explained, moving her hands about in an attempt to illustrate it with gestures, ”Apparently the big man who’s the supposed champion of Battle Royales is the Masked Royal. I’ve seen the guy fight on a few occasions before, he’s super cool to watch when he’s out there in the ring~” She grinned and nodded in approval as she spoke, though it melted into a thoughtful look moments later as she seemed to contemplate something. ”Although… I always thought there was somethin’ weirdly familiar about that guy, he reminds me an awful lot of Professor Kukui for some reason…” she added, rubbing a finger across her chin before smiling and shrugging, ”Ah well, I suppose it’s nothin’ to make a big fuss over, maybe someday we can watch a Battle Royale n’ even see the Masked Royal himself show off his moves!” Orpheus blinked in mild confusion at Zoey’s statement about the Masked Royal and Professor Kukui being oddly similar, then again he would hardly be able to tell as he had yet to meet the good professor himself. Still, the thought of watching a Battle Royale sounded very intriguing! The Zoroark had to admit that the idea of a no-holds barred free-for-all battle would be quite the spectacle, and perhaps even meeting this Masked Royal gentleman in person would be just as spectacular as well! ”But for now, let’s just focus on gettin’ ready for the next trial,” Zoey then suggested, gesturing for them to start moving on once again, ”After grabbin’ some lunch first, of course!”

☆ ☆【Leaving behind the circular garden area, Zoey and her company headed towards the shop area just to the east. Tucked away into a small corner surrounded by trees and shrubbery was a small selection of little outdoor markets and miniature eateries, most of the wares on sale at the vendors appeared to be Battle Royale related merchandise. Orpheus inspected a rack of t-shirts curiously, the majority of which were decorated with decals of a strong-looking man with tanned skin and a clean trimmed goatee. Most of his face was obscured by a skintight mask with only his mouth, chin, and eyes uncovered, and the mask itself was admittedly almost as ridiculous as it was rather cool-looking. Was this man that Masked Royal fellow that Zoey had been talking about earlier? There were other shirts among the selection as well, some of which were decorated with stylistic renditions of a Pokemon he had yet to see for himself, a strong-looking black and red bipedal cat with a belt of flames around its waist and a toothy expression that always seemed to be either grinning with a cocky expression or pulled back in a challenging snarl. Quite of few of them even had the phrase ‘#TeamTigrudo’ plastered across the chest area, and upon further inspection the Zoroark also noticed similar shirts on sale but with the decal of a Machamp and the words ‘#TeamMacho’Mon’ on them. ”Oh hey,” Zoey suddenly piped up from next to him, ”They’re still sellin’ these, neat! I’d wanted to get one of these sweet Tigrudo tees for myself, but last time I came here they were all sold out.” She pursed her lips as she rifled through the shirts, hopefully they had something that was in her size.
”Who exactly are these Pokemon? Tigrudo and… I assume Macho ‘Mon? Are they Battle Royale fighters as well?”Orpheus couldn’t help asking, apparently these two in particular were quite popular as he could see other vendors selling other similarly themed items from plush toys to towels and mugs. ”Yeah, Tigrudo the Incineroar and Macho ‘Mon the Machamp are two of Battle Royale’s most popular fighters. Their rivalry is practically the stuff of legends, they always push each other to their limits and it’s always so excitin’ to watch!” the woman explained as she rummaged through the shirts, checking through the tags as she did so, ”I always liked rootin’ for Tigrudo, there’s somethin’ really just so cool n’ engagin’ about his stage presence and how he carries himself durin’ a fight. Not to knock Macho ‘Mon either, of course, he’s pretty awesome in his own right too. But I guess cats in particular are a bigger draw for me, watchin’ Tigrudo’s fights was kinda what inspired me to choose Litten as my starter in the first place.” Someday Lukas would reach his final evolution and become an Incineroar himself, which Zoey couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement for. She’d always wanted to have one of her own, even though they tended to be quite notorious for their violent, egotistical attitudes and tendency to disobey their trainers when they didn’t feel like listening to orders. They could be pretty difficult Pokemon to work with, but going through that extra effort to establish a close, familial bond was definitely worth it in the end. Zoey wondered what Lukas would be like when he finally achieved his final evolution, would he still be the lazy, apathetic yet lively fellow he always was? Or would he undergo a near complete switch in personality and become more aggressive like Incineroars were infamous for? In some ways evolution tended to be quite unpredictable… there was no telling if the sweet, loving Pokemon you had spent so much time with would still be the same after achieving evolution… But Zoey felt that she wouldn’t want Lukas to change at all even when he became an Incineroar, personality-wise at least. But pushing those thoughts aside for the time being, she went on to continue talking about the Battle Royale since Orpheus seemed quite interested in hearing more.
”Still, there were quite a few other fighters who have participated in the Battle Royale that I really liked too. Shao-Lin was one of the more interestin’ competitors, from what I recall her fightin’ style was quite different from most other challengers,” she kept going on, cracking a smile as she found a pretty neat-looking Incineroar-themed shirt in the right size for her, ”She was a very skilled dancer and mixed in hard hittin’ combat strikes with smooth-as-silk dance moves. Her style was all about grace, precision, and agility, a bit unconventional for an arena fighter but boy did she use it to her advantage. Apparently she took inspiration from a long-retired challenger from the earlier days who had a similar fightin’ style as well, Bunny Buster if I recall correctly.” Orpheus was happy to simply listen, quite intrigued by Zoey’s knowledge about Battle Royales and how passionate she seemed when she spoke about them. She continued on even as they paid for the new shirt she’d chosen and pushed on through the market, her Pokemon listening with curiosity and intrigue all the while.
”H-Hey, if I were to become a fighter in the Battle Royale, what would be a good fighter nickname for me?”Coltrane piped up, his tail perked up eagerly as he looked between his companions for opinions.”Welllll… it could be something thematically appropriate to you, right? Maybe something like… Rock n’ Roller?”Eir offered after a moment of thought.”That could have a nice ring to it, but how about… Ruff and Tumble? Or maybe something simple yet effective like Diamond Dog?”Orpheus chipped in, running a claw along his chin as he rattled his brain for more potential ideas.”Oh! I do like the th- sound of Ruff n’ Tumble! It could potentially be intimidating, r-right?”Coltrane yipped, seeming quite pleased with his choice as he puffed his chest out and put on his best game face to try and look the part.”Possibly, yes, but a name can only say so much just on its own. Building up a solid reputation behind it would certainly guarantee to strike fear in the hearts of your opponents the moment they hear ‘Ruff and Tumble’ being announced to signal your appearance on stage,”the Zoroark advised with a chuckle and a grin as he patted the Rockruff’s head, making Coltrane’s ‘intimidating’ façade crumble away as he relaxed and leaned affectionately into the touch,”Well, at least that is how I would assume it works, of course. I am hardly a Battle Royale expert, unlike our dear Fraulein here~”
Zoey sputtered at Orpheus’s words, chuckling sheepishly as she shook her head. ”I don’t think I’d call myself an ‘expert’, I just really enjoyed watchin’ stuff like that when I was younger,” she spoke up quickly, attempting to shrug it off as she kept walking, ”I guess I was kinda inspired by it too, but that’s completely different, y’know?” While living with her first adopted family, they didn’t have much in terms of entertainment as they didn’t have much in their budget to spend on things like video games and whatnot. But they did have a TV, and even though there were a limited number of channels to choose from the Battle Royale Broadcast was one program that they had access to. Watching it on an almost daily basis with Azhé’é in the afternoon had become a ritual of sorts, with the two of them boisterously cheering on their favorite fighters while Amá prepared dinner in the kitchen. She wasn’t really into that sort of stuff, but her adopted father absolutely loved watching the Battle Royales and it was through him that Zoey had gotten into them too. He would even save up for them to book tickets and a day trip to Royal Avenue so they could watch the fights up close in the huge stadium, and meanwhile Amá would go to the garden to do some reading or would shop at the Thrifty Megamart. ”I mean, I guess at some point I might’ve wanted to compete in the Battle Royales myself, but…” Zoey added, looking like she was about to continue before shaking her head and changing the subject, ”Well anyways, let’s just find a good place for lunch before we head out for the volcano park, yeah?” Tempting as it was to get malasadas, the multitude of aromas mingling in the air from so many restaurants of varying types and styles was pulling her in all different directions. Still, there was one place in particular that she wanted to stop by that she remembered eating at during the last few trips she'd taken here with her foster family, that smell was unmistakable even with so many others wafting around and she found herself immediately starting to head that way as if on instinct.】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【Breezing past the majority of the vendors, Zoey and her Pokemon headed towards where more of the little restaurants were situated. Given how much tourism this particular part of Alola attracted, it was hardly unusual to find a multitude of different kinds of food being served. Ramen shops, a miniature diner, even some cute little bistros that looked to be inspired by Lumiose City fare, though among the multicultural sprawl of assorted eateries the signature Slurpuff-themed sign of Royal Avenue’s malasada shop stuck out like a sore thumb. Orpheus’s eyes lit up upon sighting it, though it seemed Zoey had other ideas as she headed off in a different direction rather than going directly to the shop.”Ah, not interested in getting malasadas this time, Fraulein?”he inquired curiously as he, Eir, and Coltrane followed her change of path. ”I mean, I was kinda thinkin’ of somethin’ different to have, besides if ya want a malasada then we could just grab one on the way out, Orph,” she suggested as she then stopped in front of a wooden structure that appeared to be quite similar to the many ramen stands scattered about. Dark red cloth awning hung from the tall wooden roof, covered in a design depicting the head of a Salazzle spewing out stylized fire that spread across the entirety of the long canvas. Along the middle of the awning the flames appeared to form letters before transitioning back to following along its initial horizontal path, the lettering spelling out ‘Wok With Me’, undoubtedly the name of this particular food stand. Just beyond the sitting area consisting of the long, polished wooden counter and accompanying benches stood a tall, well-muscled man with dark tanned skin and dreadlocked hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, concentrating hard on the wok and the hissing flames originating from the grill underneath as tongues of bright orange and yellow licked around the edges of the pan. It was a bit difficult to tell what exactly he was cooking, but the smell radiating from the stand was unmistakable.
”Ya ever have Alolan barbecue before?” she asked, gesturing for them to join her as she moved to take a seat at one of the benches, ”This was a favorite spot of mine when my old folks n’ I would come on a day trip to this place. They serve up some of the best barbecue in all of Alola, well, I think so at least.” Though mildly disappointed at not getting malasadas, it hardly lasted long as the idea of barbecue sounded quite tantalizing to the Zoroark.”Ah, well in any case I suppose it is hard to really refuse good food~”he simply stated, taking a seat by Zoey and taking a quick glance at the menu to see what was available. There were only at least three other patrons at the other two benches, one of which smiled in delight as a generous helping of barbecued meat and grilled veggies was dumped onto his plate. With a couple of quick gestures, two scoops of white rice and macaroni salad respectively were placed alongside the meat and vegetables with a practiced expertise. Seemed this man had been running this place for quite a long time and knew all the beats by heart.”Enjoy the feast, bro! Glad to have ya here as always!”the chef chimed cheerfully with a broad grin after finishing his short banter with the other patron, apparently a regular from how buddy-buddy they were being, before turning towards Zoey. His dark eyes widened in shock, before they adopted a bright sparkle and a sense of familial warmth as he made his way over.”Well well! Here’s a sight for sore eyes! Almost didn’t recognize ya after so many years, but I hadn’t expected to see ya make a return at long last!”he hooted out mirthfully, a kindly smile on his face as he bent slightly forward over the counter towards her,”How’s it been hangin’ since we last saw each other, Zo Zo?”
Zoey felt blazing heat pool into her cheeks at the casual utterance of an old childhood nickname, one that she could claim to have outgrown and yet hearing it again brought on a flood of nostalgia, accompanied by the smoky-sweet smell of burning wood and barbecue sauce. ”Ya know I ain’t as young as I was when I came here for the last time, and there ain’t any reason to call me that anymore, Akamu,” she spoke, tone brusque as she narrowed her eyes dangerously at him. Still, the façade hardly lasted long before she dropped it entirely, a cheerful grin crossing her face to match the one the man, Akamu, wore on his own. ”But y’know, I’m willin’ to let it slide just this once, count yerself lucky otherwise ya’d be stone cold out on the floor right now,” she playfully conceded with a chuckle, sticking her tongue out at him before continuing, ”And to answer yer question, I recently came back to Alola after bein’ off with the fosters in Hoenn for a while. Lavaridge is a nice place to live, don’t get me wrong, but after comin’ back n’ takin’ a nice walk ‘round the islands I start realizin’ how much I missed this place, y’know?” Akamu laughed along as well, apparently not having taken her threat seriously, not that it was really meant to be so of course.”Can’t say I really know the feeling since I’ve never left Alola, but homesickness is one of those things anyone and everyone can feel, sis,”he reciprocated with a nod of semi-understanding, lightly flicking Zoey on the nose with a good-natured laugh before spraying a shot of fresh oil onto the still hot wok and grabbing more ingredients to toss in for the next batch of barbecue,”As for you, Zo Zo, ya’ve really grown quite a bit of sass as ya got older n’ bolder, though I’d be lyin’ if I said I didn’t like it! Ya seem… a lot wiser too, seems almost hard to believe ya were still just barely a teenager before… Well, either way, you’ve certainly grown into a pretty fine woman, if I do say so myself~”

Zoey hadn’t noticed the Salazzle until Akamu called out to her, the fiery salamander Pokemon having been lazing about and basking in the sun leaking in through a small window in the back of the shack. Hissing softly, Seara lifted her head at the request, patiently waiting for him to toss in more firewood before opening her long, toothy jaws and directing a small gout of flame at the grill. The newly added wood that had already started weakly burning with the old flames suddenly flared to life with a renewed energy as the Salazzle’s flame lit it up completely. Job completed, Seara gave a lazy flick of her tail as she settled back down in place, closing her eyes to doze off into a nap until her services would be needed again. Orpheus, having stayed quiet while Zoey and Akamu conversed, observed the restaurant in full, a bit startled by the Salazzle’s sudden movement as she helped relight the grill before going back to her dozing. He eyed the Pokemon curiously, a lot of these species that were native to Alola were truly quite fascinating to see up close. While being still very unfamiliar with the region and its natives as a whole, the Zoroark could tell that this particular Pokemon appeared to be a Fire-type given that it had just breathed out flames only moments ago. He wondered distantly if maybe they would find more of such a Pokemon like this at the volcano park, undoubtedly droves of Fire-types would make their homes in such a violent environment of extreme heat and explosive pressure.】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【Zoey watched with an eager hunger as Akamu swirled and tossed about the meat and vegetables cooking in the pan with a practiced expertise while they made small talk, he had always prided himself on cooking even though he was hardly one to brag. While there were plenty of Alolan barbecue restaurants scattered all around the islands, there were far fewer of those that were among the best of the best as far as barbecue went, and the Wok With Me had done a lot to earn that kind of regional reputation. Akamu had been working this gig for as long as she had known him, though back in the day he would work at this food shack alongside his old man who had founded it and passed down the recipe for their signature sauce. But after Big Papa Kaholo’s passing, he was the only one in the family left who was still very attached to the business. While his wife was very supportive of him keeping his dad’s dream alive, his children on the other hand didn’t seem quite as interested in potentially inheriting the business in favor of taking up jobs in the larger cities. Akamu hoped to at least find someone willing to keep the business going in his place when he grew too old to continue working, but until then his devotion to keeping the place open and flourishing would keep him busy even to death.
”So ya mentioned Mantine surfin’, yeah? Are ya still out ridin’ those sweet waves when yer not workin’?” Zoey inquired as she shifted her eyes back to him, tilting her head curiously. Mantine surfing was a big-time sport in Alola, the vast ocean surrounding the islands and the right weather conditions made for huge, towering, beautiful waves that were open season for surfing enthusiasts. Zoey had never gone surfing herself, but it was always so cool watching professional Mantine surfers show off their moves as they soared up high above the waves. There were even competitions where the best of them would compete against each other for points, prizes, and bragging rights, but it was all in good fun and for the love of the sport itself. Akamu had been a very competitive surfer back in the day, and had this kind of ongoing rivalry with another surfer. They would always try to one-up each other and push each other to improve on their own skills, and while it started off as a fairly aggressive competition between them they had eventually grown to be good friends. The man ran a hand through his dreads, a sheepish grin across his weathered yet handsome face.”Yeah, I still surf every so often, but not so much competitively anymore,”he said, shaking his head and chuckling wryly,”I still got some of my old moves, but with so many young’uns takin’ it up nowadays I can’t hope to even try n’ keep up with ‘em in a competition. My prime’s long since been passed, y’know? Well, that, and…”
He lowered his gaze towards the grill again, pulling out a bottle and giving the pan’s contents a hefty squirt of delicious homemade barbecue sauce. His face held an unreadable expression, though somehow Zoey could tell that whatever Akamu was going to say next was not good news.”You remember that rivalry I had goin’ with that really neat lady surfer back in the day, yeah?”he asked, not once turning to look at her. ”Ah yeah, I think ya mentioned her name was… Adriana... Adriana Muñoz, right?” she reciprocated, teeth pulling at her bottom lip as she racked her brain for a recognizable name, ”What about her? Did somethin’ happen?” The way Akamu’s lips perked up momentarily in a hint of a fond smile at the mention of the name was as much of a sign that she needed to know she was on the right track, though she wasn’t sure if she really wanted to know what was coming next.”…Yeah. I doubt ya ever heard of what exactly happened since you were away at the time, but… Durin’ a competition she had a pretty nasty accident and ended up crashin’ into a reef at high speed,”he explained, turning his eyes back to her with his lips pulled into a heavy frown.
”Holy s**t, that’s… She didn’t…?” Zoey was at a loss for words, but kept pushing for him to fill in more of the blanks.”Oh no no no, she’s still very much alive and well, for sure,”he quickly interjected, shaking his head,”But still, she was in a pretty bad way when her Mantine brought her back to shore. Legs and back were all slashed up n' bleedin', bruises everywhere, and her back was broken in at least two places. Luckily she wasn’t paralyzed, but… just seein’ her like that was absolutely terrifyin’… She’s a good friend of mine, and I was so scared that she wasn’t gonna make it, y’know?”Zoey simply nodded, unsure of what to really say but allowing him to continue espousing the story at his own discretion, though she wanted to know what had happened to Adriana after suffering a pretty horrific accident like that.”Like I said though, she’s still alive and well. She can’t do competitive Mantine surfin’ anymore because of her injuries, but she still does it casually every so often. Nowadays she mainly works at Mallow’s restaurant over in Konikoni, though she sometimes does part-time in Olivia’s jewelry shop too,”Akamu went on, giving a small smile as he divided the finished barbecue among four plates and served each with a scoop of white rice and macaroni salad,”I stopped doin’ competitive Mantine surfin’ too, out of respect for her. I visit her in the restaurant whenever I have the time and she comes by to get some barbecue every so often. Sometimes we even go down to Heahea Beach and do some surfin’ together. Even if we aren’t really doin’ the whole competition anymore, it’s still pretty nice, y’know?”
Zoey offered a warm smile back, eyes brightening as he set a large plate loaded up with food in front of her before going on to hand out her Pokemon their portions. ”Well, glad to hear that she’s been doin’ pretty well for herself after what all happened. Sounds like she ain’t lettin’ it keep her from doin’ what she loves either, more power to her for that,” she suggested, gathering a generous forkful of barbecued meat and veggies, ”It even sounds like the both of ya’ve even grown a lot closer as friends rather than keepin’ the whole rivalry thing goin’.” Akamu chuckled amiably as he placed down the last large plate of barbecue in front of Eir and Coltrane with enough food for them to share together.”Heh, yeah, I guess ya wouldn’t be wrong there,”he agreed with a wholehearted nod, grabbing a wooden spoon and picking out some of the leftover bits in the wok that had overcooked and gotten stuck,”I kinda do miss the fiery spirit of our rivalry sometimes and how it gave me that push I needed to up my own game, but… we can still help each other grow and improve even as just friends. She still does try to get me riled up by makin’ a competition outta somethin', even though it’s just for fun~”The woman smirked around a mouthful of barbecue as she tucked into her food, humming in agreement as she gathered a small mound of macaroni drenched in creamy dressing on her fork. Adriana and Akamu seemed like they could’ve been a good couple together, at least if the both of them weren’t already married to their own spouses with their own kids to take care of. Then again, it was hardly Zoey’s place to play matchmaker, and they both seemed to be quite happy with their own individual marriages, even though she had only met Akamu’s lady friend at least only once before. For now, though, she focused on her food as she continued to shoot the breeze with her old friend, telling him about her undertaking the island challenge and all she had accomplished on her journey so far.】☆ ☆
