Sullivan was so focused on the shard that he tuned out his surroundings; which wasn’t hard to do. Junpei was on alert and noted the sudden appearance of an individual, nudging the young man to get his attention. It wasn’t until he felt a hand on his shoulder though that he really snapped to attention, spinning on his rear in surprise.
”Oh! I didn’t mean to startle you.” A young woman with blue hair remarked, hand over her mouth to conceal her gasp. Sullivan blinked, head tilting curiously before raising a hand, giving a quick flick through the air with an open palm to sign it was fine, absently forgetting.
Lana paused a moment, looking at him curiously as Sulli got to his feet, towering over her and still a bit damp. ”I see you took down those Wishiwashi… and to think I trained them so well only to be defeated.” She sighed in frustration, which Sullivan noted with a curious look. Did she say (or did he read from her lips, he’d missed a good chunk with her hand in the way) something about training? And the Wishiwashi?
She looked disappointed but shook her head. ”Still, it was impressive! You and your pokemon certainly did well! Which means, you can take me on.” Sullivan squinted a bit, still trying to decipher what she was saying. She continued and he followed just a bit; she was the trial captain then? Which meant… he could challenge her?
By the time she’d finished, Lana had put some distance between the two of them, a small smile on her face. ”So then, let us begin! I pride myself as a captain you know and you won’t wash me away that easily.” Sullivan stared a moment before giving a little nod in understanding. Double checking Ulani and Mana before turning his attention back to Lana. Right, he was ready for this.

"First my well-trained Wishiwashi, and now my own pokemon..." Lana lamented with a soft sigh. It didn't take long for the short woman to recover from her post battle blues, and after checking her pockets for something she stepped back up to Sullivan. Whipping out her stamp, she waited patiently for Sullivan to present to her his stamp book before decorating it properly with her insignia. "There you are! Your official stamp, and now for the rest of your items." From within her pocket she produced a Waterium Z. "Now watch closely now, I'm going to show you the dance," she instructed him, and took a few steps back before going into the careful steps that made her dance, her moves as gentle and fluid as the waves she prided herself in. Afterwards, Lana smiled, "alright, that's everything. Best of luck with the rest of your challenges."

Sullivan wished he could’ve called that battle easy, but it wasn’t. He felt bad; Ulani had fainted and he’d had to substitute Kairi in to finish the job. Not the best match up in the world but the Sharpedo got the job done. The Emolga was just coming around as the battle ended, eyes wobbling as she recalled the defeat she’d just suffered. The young man did his best to soothe her, gently rubbing between her ears and smiling at her with an appreciative if not apologetic look. She’d done very well; he didn’t need her being down on herself.
Transferring Ulani to his shoulder as Lana approached, Sullivan took his winnings and tucked them away, producing his stamp book and his sketch book as well. Immediately he was sketching little stick men in correlation with the dance moves the young girl preformed on the same page as the last one, placing a large water droplet next to it as an indicator what those moves were for.
He gave a grin as he tucked it away, promptly signing ‘thank you’ before collecting his things and returning to route 5. There was a pokemon center there to heal up his team and make plans for his next course of action.

Honestly, Adder actually felt rather confident and ready for his gym battle. And perhaps even the trial. That didn't mean he wasn't hesitating a bit before heading into things, though. He slowed his pace, not to reconsider, but simply to collect himself, to start planning even further. After all, that was motivation, right? To get to the next step, the next thing he had planned? It wasn't blinding or distracting at all. It was thorough. Soon, though, he would have to get to other priorities, like catching pokemon... But for now, his priority would be just to catch up a bit. Make it easier to travel, at the very least. He needed to get a pokemon that could fly him around, or at least get some contacts so he could do that.

Refocusing, and with a plan in mind, Adder strode forward, lengthening his stride just a bit. He slowed and looked around as he made his way; the place was... actually kind of relaxing. A lot more open, quiet, and empty than he had anticipated. Then again, maybe they were giving the gym leader her space? He paused, but shook his head, before making his way through the marked trail. As soon as he approached, and Lana turned her attention towards him, he reached for his pokeball, issuing his challenge. He had this. He was sure of it.

Adder wished machines did these stamps, because he definitely wasn't enjoying having to get close enough to hold his book out, and have the gym leader do it themselves. Not to mention, the dancing... He tried to refrain from reacting at all, really, so he wouldn't insult her, and just nodded as he put his items aside. ".... Right. I'll probably try the trial, then...." he remarked warily, before giving an Alolan solute good bye, and turning on his heel. Maybe he ought to heal his pokemon first, though...? How was there not a pokecenter here!?! Adder grimaced, but paused in his fuming when he heard a small chirp behind him, and turned. His eyebrows rose and his eyes widened as he noticed one of his pokemon was evolving. For a frightening (or exciting) moment, he wondered if Puff cosmog had gotten out, and was evolving to its next stage-- but a curious chime from his bag quickly deflated those hopes. Looking around, he realized none of his other pokemon -- besides Cling -- were out, which meant....
As the light faded, it was confirmed-- Pichu had evolved. Adder was still so caught off guard, he didn't react, not even as the pokemon chirped happily, and bound towards him. It wasn't until the (much heavier) mouse pokemon landed on his shoulder, cheering, that he stumbled and broke from the daze. He reached up to help catch the pokemon, reflexively, frowning slightly in discomfort at the pokemon's affection. He leaned away some as Pikachu nuzzled up against his cheek, but the excited pokemon seemed unfazed by his trainer's actions. Sighing, Adder took him down, into his arms, before turning. He'd find the source of the trial, heal everyone up, and.... well, give it a try.

It was more systematic than the wild tales of overwhelming hoards and tasks and obstacles that he'd been told about in school, and at home. Perhaps he should of drawn that out a bit more.... It honestly didn't end up as hard as he thought, at all. And if he'd defeated more pokemon, perhaps his rewards would have been better. Pausing, he shook his head, moving to collect the shard that was left behind. Probably not. All it was was a bit of battle experience for his pokemon, and these odd pieces of.... whatever they were made out of. Looking it over, he turned back towards his pokemon, recalling Bayleaf, and letting Pikachu jump back onto his shoulder with a happy chirp. This was good, though. It was progress. Now he could move on to the next area...

Like most of Alola, Brooklet Hill was beautiful. Keeping still atop the crest of the, Naomi looked down at the lake, one of many from what he could tell, and for several seconds simply just took it all in. It was gorgeous, and once again he wished he had a camera. Rotom was programmed with one, or at least his dex was, but there was a stark difference between a picture taken by a pokemon and one by a professional camera. Not that he could make proper use, or even afford, a professional camera, but... maybe he could look into buying a digital camera, and document his journey; his parents and other family would undoubtedly want pictures of his time spent in Alola, when he returned.
Storing this idea away for later, Naomi breathed out. He hadn't come here to enjoy the view, though he certainly did appreciate it, he'd come here to challenge Lana! A gust of wind buffeted the back of his head, blowing loose strands of hair and the sleeves of his shirt forward. It was the boost he needed to start climbing down the hill, hands reaching up to brush down his hair. His pokemon, as expected, followed after him, and together they made it down the hill and carried on deeper into Brooklet Hill. He wasn't alone here, there were several people here, most fishers, enjoying the weather and the water, but none of them were Lana. At least, none of them looked like they were. Decked out in fisher gear, and paying attention only to water before them, he doubted a trial captain would be so cavalier when there were potential trial-goers coming and going.
"Hello there." Naomi looked to his left, and sharply at that, when a feminine voice called out to him. A blue-haired woman sat cross-legged on a ridge, an attentive, albeit drowsy, expression on her face. She a held a hand up to cover up a yawn, then used that same hand to wave at Naomi. "Oh! Hello there," he returned the greeting, minus the yawn, then looked curiously at the woman. She was the first non-fisher he'd seen, and that was enough to warrant a question, "Are you Lana?" The woman yawned again, but with it she stood to her feet. "Mhm~ Here to challenge me?" Naomi nodded his head, a spark in his eyes, he was ready! And so was his team. "Okay. Follow me," she directed, and, without waiting to see if her challenger was following, headed down the trail to the largest lake, which led out into the ocean.
At the shore Lana turned around, looking more awake and determined than previously. "Ready or not, here we come!" With an underhanded toss she released her first pokemon, a red light shooting out from the airborne capsule and hitting the water.

The introduction of Araquanid--a pokemon Naomi actually had to look up on his pokedex--had been unexpected, and forced him to switch Jingū out for Sousa. Thankfully the bird had done well for himself, utilizing a move he hadn't even known the pokemon had, though he'd returned to his trainer exhausted and with soaked feathers. He was tended to immediately, alongside Jingū, once the battle concluded. He took his prizes, bowing to Lana beforehand, and tucked them carefully away. "You did well," Lana congratulated, lethargy returning and leaving her expression stoic. "If you're interested, you can always take on the Totem pokemon that resides in the water. I raised it myself, so it'll most certainly provide you and your team with a challenge."
Another totem challenge? Excellent! The quick bobs of his head revealed his excitement, prompting a giggle from Lana before she turned to face the lake. She placed her fingers into her mouth and whistled, the sharp sound echoing out across the water. Several seconds passed before, from the midst of the lake, bubbles began to appear, multitudinous and angrily, before a beast erupted from its depths. Naomi stumbled back with a yelp, though managed to catch himself before he fell back. "Best of luck to you!" Lana called out, suddenly much farther back. Well, he was officially on his own then. He looked out across the water, where he could now identity the pokemon as Wishiwashi, just much larger than the one he'd just battled. He straightened up and swallowed back the slight fear he felt, at facing such a large, water-bound beast. He looked back at Jingū, unperturbed by the pokemon and ready to go, before extending his hand out. She took his offer, skipping forward into the shallow end of the lake.
