Brooklet Hill is the designated site for the Island Challenge. Within it, there are multiple water pools as you go down to the basin at the bottom of the cliff where the Totem Pokémon, Wishiwashi, resides. Lana will also accept challengers looking to get her stamp here.
Trial #2: Brooklet Hill
Trials do not need to be done in order, require 15 wild pokemon encounter posts to initiate, and reward one dimensional shard upon completion. You must roll for the attacks of both the Totem, and any allies it has out, unless specific attacks are listed for certain rounds. Whoever goes first is pre-determined and fixed, and cannot be changed by items or stat changes. This is to make things a bit more challenging for the easier trials, and easier for the more difficult ones.
Trial Pokemon cannot be caught, and Totem pokemon cannot be one-hit K.O.ed, and have Totem Aura, which gives them individual boosts to certain stats. These boosts will be stated for each totem. The totem pokemon give out set exp, however, the total experience earned per battle depends on how many pokemon are earned, and how long the battle takes, and EXP Items do not effect EXP earned from these battles. When you have completed a trial, please quote a mod for approval.
PLEASE NOTE: This system is very much in beta. There's no real way to test it that wouldn't hold things up, so we roughed this out to put out with the rest of the guild. As issues arise (trials being too easy, or too difficult), we will make adjustments. This means that if you are one of the first people doing the trials, you should be aware that other people may have to work harder, or may have it easier, depending on the trial, and the adjustments we make. Please know this going in, so that there's a reduced chance of hard feelings or accusations of things being 'unfair'. We're trying out best.

Sullivan took a deep breath as a wave of sea scent rolled through the air and invaded his nostrils; Brooklet Hill, another small section of island nestled next to the ocean that boarded Melemele island. It was a gorgeous sight with high ranging cliffs with waterfalls freely flowing through holes in the mountain faces and into the pools of water underneath. There were simple bridges set up to allow movement between the small land masses that composed the area and a quick scan indicated that there were a couple of fisherman taking advantage of the prime fishing spots. Still though, it wasn’t crowded which meant they could get a little training in as well before he issued a challenge to the trial leader.
Perfect.
Ulani was still clutching to his hand, though interest in the new area was evident on her face as she looked about. Sullivan kept her upright on his shoulder as they walked, checking to make sure Junpei and Mana were sticking close. The Rockruff wasn’t far from his side, which was the usual, with Mana still hitching a ride, clutching tightly to the back of his service vest. He frowned a bit at the sight; she looked miffed, a much different expression than earlier. Was something wrong? He’d failed to notice this shift in her attitude as they were moving but now that they were setting up to start training, it was in his best interest to figure out just what was wrong with the Rowlet before he started. Disgruntled teammates weren’t the best…

Gently removing Ulani to set her down, much to her dismay, Sullivan shifted his attention to Mana. Kneeling so that they were at level, he gave a concerned frown and gently poked her in chest feathers. Her head snapped around from staring off in the opposite direction, narrowed gaze at the man as she ruffled her feathers. What did he want?
Sullivan poked again, head tilting as he made a bit of a gesture. Mana just stared; what was he doing now? She still didn’t follow along with his signing and well didn’t exactly care to learn. She was agitated with him for no reason other than that she was a brat and felt he deserved the cold shoulder.
The blue-haired man just rolled his eyes. Ugh. Ulani shuffled over, little paws grasping onto his pant leg to catch his attention, giving a series of chirps as well. Sullivan missed those; the Emolga wasn’t aware of her trainer’s situation yet, but he did look to her and give a gentle smile. She seemed interested at least in doing some and so, if Mana was just going to be a brat, he’d work on training her a bit.

He scooped the Emolga into his hands – she was surprisingly light, but what did he expect from such a small creature- before walking his way towards the grass with her, setting his things down just on the edge where Junpei came to guard them, Mana breaking just a bit from her pouting antics to eye the now un-monitored bag.
Sullivan set Ulani down just before the edge of the grass, looking about before gathering up a few pebbles. The Emolga watched the man curiously as he did, a paw over her mouth to hide her confusion. What was he doing exactly? Actually, he hadn’t spoken a word to her about what they were going to do and it took an intense focus on his actions for her to get a general idea of what he was up to. When he narrowed his gaze, and levied a pebble into the grass her ears twitched.
They both stared in the direction as a strange little bug creature with what appeared to be a bubble of water around its head crawled out from the grass. Sullivan eyes narrowed on it a moment before his head gave a nod and he looked to Ulani, giving a head gesture for her to step forward. She looked a little uncertain, only the reassuring smile he gave her really urging her forward. She toddled forward, facing off with the strange spider with as serious face as she could muster.

Ulani’s eyes wobbled a bit as sulked her way back over to Sullivan, trying to rub the water from her face from all the vicious beams of bubbles that Dewpider had launched into it. Sullivan was on the ball, already with a cloth in hand to help her dry off and some potions to help heal her up. He gave her a gentle rubbing between the ears to try and ease her sadness which seemed to be a welcome relief.
Once she was fully healed up, Sullivan gave a little gesture at her. Did she want to keep going? That was what he was trying to convey. She stared at him, clearly confused, and wondering why he didn’t just well… speak. Out of curiosity she raised her own paws and tried to make similar gestures; certainly, harder since she had no idea what sign was or even why he was making them in the first place.
Sullivan couldn’t help but chuckle, watching a moment. He had to think a moment before raising another pebble at her and pointing to the grass. That was about as clear as he was going to be able to be. She stared a moment, seeming to understand. She raised her paws again, trying to make odd gestures like he had which made his chuckle again. Was that a yes? Her head nodded and he could tell she gave a little cheer. Alright, that seemed to be a yes.
With a nod of his own, Sullivan rose and directed his gaze out to the grass. He rolled the pebble in his palm before tossing it once again into the grass, this time nabbing a Poliwag for Ulani to challenge next.

While Sullivan and Ulani trained, Mana went about her own nefarious deeds. Junpei’s attention was on his trainer and new team mate, watching out for potential dangers that Sullivan might’ve failed to notice. Which meant his bag wasn’t being supervised. Without hesitation the Rowlett, who had long since abandoned her perch on the Rockruff, shuffled her way over to the bag.
She glanced about once, then twice, just to be certain she wouldn’t be caught. When it was evident that no one was paying attention, she took the time to dig in the bag and find the candies that Sullivan had acquired earlier. Ah ha! So, he was holding out on her! He had some nerve; what did he intend to use these candies for anyways? They looked pretty tasty either way and without hesitation she pulled the little baggie they were in out and fluttered a decent way away to consume them where no one could see.
Did she even taste them? With how fast she downed them, it was hard to tell but the smug satisfied look on her face suggested that she’d enjoyed them all the same. She gave a soft coo in glee; she even felt stronger, which totally meant she’d deserved them. Her glee soon dissipated into surprise as her body started to glow. What… what was going on?!
Mana consumed four rare candies! She went to level 17!

Junpei was the first to notice the odd bright glow, immediately jumping to his feet in alarm. He lowered himself to the ground anticipating danger but when it revealed a bird that looked oddly familiar. Was that Mana? His head snapped around to try and locate the Rowlet who was conveniently missing as well. The two and two wasn’t hard to put together and immediately he gave a bark and darted to catch Sullivan’s attention.
The man was healing Ulani up after a battle with a Surskit, pride written on the Emolga’s face from the success of her succession of battles. When the Rockruff latched onto his sleeve though, Sullivan’s attention shifted, frown on his face. What was wrong? Junpei directed his snout in the direction of the still panicking bird and Sullivan looked further concerned before scooping Ulani up and trotting over to see what was going on.
Mana had calmed down a bit though was still startled by her new form. Though the calmness quickly went to stiffness as her trainer appeared, her gaze averted. The wrappers from the rare candies were scattered at her feet with no chance for her to dispose of the evidence. Sullivan knelt and held up the baggy with the lone remaining rare candy, expression immediately stern as he put two and two together. Ulani clutched to his shirt sleeve, sensing the growing tension. Someone had done something they weren’t supposed to…

It was a good thing that Sullivan didn’t have the ability to speak because there were no words to describe his frustration at Mana’s actions. He didn’t know what he’d done to deserve these levels of disrespect; was it the totem challenge? He’d apologized and tried his best to make it up to her. Was it something else? Just the communication issues? Even then she had to be able to tell that this was just unacceptable.
So… what was he doing wrong? Clearly, he’d messed up along the way. Mana could only watch her trainer’s face as it didn’t break from the stone-cold agitation that had come to overtake it. Sullivan removed the single piece of candy, eyeing it a moment before giving a sigh and unwrapping it. For a moment Mana thought he was going to give it to her to finish off but instead proceeded to give it to Ulani instead. Well now that was a slap in the face!
The Emolga sniffed the candy before taking it, looking up at Sullivan with uncertainty. When he gave a nod as a go ahead though, she popped it into her mouth and gave a little squeal of joy. It was tasty. The Datrix stared, feathers ruffling. Why did he give it to her?! See! She knew he was just going to waste it. She directed her attention to him, intending to complain only to be caught dead in her squawks at the glare she was receiving.

Honestly, Mana didn’t think Sullivan could be all that intimidating. Oh, certainly he was rather tall for a human, but beyond that he just didn’t seem scary in any regards. The whole not talking thing wasn’t scary when the flippant hand signals, the blue hair well… that wasn’t scary. In general, he just had a friendly disposition to him.
At least, under normal conditions. Clearly the Dartix had hit all the right buttons to bring out this side of him. And that was nothing to be proud of. The grass bird couldn’t help the shiver that ran down her spine and she refrained from trying to complain. Sullivan was staring like he was ready to punch her and Junpei looked ready to back him up. The only not phased party was well… Ulani and that was because she was enjoying the last piece of candy. The single ray of joy in what was clearly a storm of unhappy.
Mana shuffled, waiting to be reprimanded for her actions. It was coming, she knew it; just what would happen was what she was uncertain about. Sullivan hadn’t stopped with the stone-cold stare before finally shaking his head and rising to his feet. Mana winced, eyes shutting in response. Something was about to happen, she just knew it.

Something was going to happen as soon as Sullivan thought it up. He was fuming on the inside as he sat there, and taking in the details of the situation only adding fuel to the growing fire. While this wasn’t the first time he’d been agitated -he’d felt far greater levels with other situations – but to have his pokemon actively undermining him like this was a degree of bothersome that he’d never dealt with before.
Should he scold her? Put her in her pokeball for the remainder of the time? Just not use her in general? Could you really ‘time-out’ a pokemon? He wasn’t certain how to proceed; he’d never had these issues with Inoke or Kairi though they admittedly belonged to his father and Levi; people with a more demanding presence and level of confidence than him. Junpei wasn’t an issue either; he was trained to be on his best behavior for Sullivan’s benefit; a problematic Rockruff did not make for a good service companion.
Maybe it was just him? Mana was technically the first pokemon he’d officially owned. It was an entirely new responsibility he’d never dealt with so maybe it was simply a failing on his part? But Ulani wasn’t being problematic. Though… she seemed on the young side.
Sullivan sighed, rubbing at his face in agitation. He needed some advice. For now, though, he felt that it might be within his best interest to just confine her to her pokeball. He reached back for it and gave her a disapproving look before the bird disappeared in a flash of light. Staring at the pokeball a moment be tucked it away.

He just… needed to focus for now. On training Ulani and getting this next trial out of the way. With a sigh, he glanced to the Emolga situated right next to his shoe with a paw over her mouth. She’d finished the candy and quietly watched the situation unfold with Mana.
Sullivan made a gesture and she snapped out of the daze she was in, little hands going up in the air and attempting to mimic the gesture he’d made. It brought a smile to his face to be honest; maybe once they’d gotten through this trial, he’d spend a little time trying to teach her some sign language. The Emolga seemed interested surprisingly, that or mimicry was something she was just fond of doing.
It seemed like a solid opportunity though and he might as well take advantage of it. After training. Once more, Sullivan was scooping up rocks and chucking them into the grass to summon forth a wild pokemon, Junpei returning to his station of guarding the bag as Ulani waited on her next challenger ready to go.
Sullivan snatched her up though as a Paras emerged a look of disgust crossing his face as he shielded her away. He was expecting another water type pokemon, not the bug that approached. He knew they could be poisonous too and the last thing he wanted to do was subject Ulani to that. Without hesitation, he sent Inoke in her place, the Braviary’s head only tilting curiously before looking back at the young man. Sullivan gave a stern nod which seemed to translate his intentions and without hesitation the bird dispatched of the bug in a single swoop.

Sullivan felt relieved, stepping forward and giving a thankful pat to the side of the Braviary’s face for his service. Ulani was staring with a wide-eyed gaze at the bird as well, amazed by how he’d taken the insect pokemon out in a single blow. It was practically majestic!
Inoke watched the pair, noticing the Emolga’s focus but not wandering on it. He instead turned his attention to the young man accepting the gentle pat to the side of his head. The blue-haired man couldn’t help but give the bird a grin before turning his attention to the grass. He still had some rocks in hand though after that little visit, he was certain if he should continue. He’d have to take a trip to the center if Ulani was poisoned or injured beyond his healing capabilities and that was not something he wanted to do. Still though, she needed the training.
Buckling down, he chucked another rock into the grass to summon out another pokemon. Hopefully one that Ulani could handle. Fortune smiled on him it seemed as a Psyduck squawked and wondered out into view, rubbing at the bump that it’d incurred from the rock that hi it. Sullivan let out the breath he’d been holding and held Ulani out to fly down and face off with the Psyduck.

Ulani gave a squeal of joy, throwing her little hands up in the air in triumph as the Psyduck waddled away in tears. Sullivan, while proud of her success, felt a little bad for the duck. But, that was the nature of pokemon battles and if it could walk away from the battle so quickly after being defeated, it would recover just fine on its own.
As the Emolga flew her way back up and into his arms, the blue-haired man took a moment to think. Ulani was doing a decent job of taking out the local water life which meant that they could probably proceeded to the trial challenge with some ease. He stepped over to his bag and pulled a few potions to top her off. Once that was done he scooped up his bag and strapped it over his shoulder, Junpei getting to his feet as well to follow.
Right, it was time for a challenge now. Either they’d get through it or they’d fail but he wanted to get himself moving a little faster through all these challenges. He strolled over the bridges, maneuvering the path, and even hopping the rocks that peppered the waters at time to get off the beaten trail, until he arrived at the twin poles that marked the entrance to the trial area. He looked at the sign curiously; the Totem’s Den.
Sullivan straightened and maneuvered for the massive pool in the center of the place, eyebrows furrowing at the ripples in the middle. The area was largely abandoned; there was only him and his pokemon. So, was something under there? He stepped forward gingerly, staring at the water. Ulani shifted in his arms, clinging to his arm, and staring with an equal level of curiosity. Junpei’s stance was alert, eyes narrowed on the ripples, a little growl rumbling from the back of his throat.
The surface continued to ripple and bubble and finally Sullivan decided to brave a check. Once again, picking up a rock once more. He stared at it, rolling it in his hand before heaving it right at the center of the ripple. It bounced and went a few inches into the air before plopping into the water just behind. The ripples stopped before the water jumped to life, waves suddenly rolling up and out and raining down on the surprised trio.
Sullivan whipped wet hair from his face, squinting against the droplets before eyes went wide at the sight of a massive pokemon. A Wishiwashi… in their collective form with a steady glow around it’s figure. Well… it looked like he’d found the Totem Pokemon…

Once again Sullivan found himself letting out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. These trials… were really something. He was still soaking wet from the Wishiwashi’s first appearance and frowned as the now tiny fish scurried back into the center of the pool with only a fraction sized ripple that it’d appeared from. To think a combination of those little things could be so… troubling.
Swiping strands of hair sticking to his face out of the way, he turned his attention to his pokemon. Luckily no one had fainted which was the number one concern. Mana looked a bit miffed that once again she’d been forced to battle, but looked proud of her success. It’d really been the only choice he’d had given the crazy damage Ulani had taken. Luckily, the little flying mouse had made it through and while just as wet as him, seemed proud in her own right. She took a moment to be concerned, swiping at strands on his face that kept trying to fall and blur his vision, which brought a grin to his face.
Fishing out some potions and double checking Junpei (who was alright though clearly annoyed by the water dousing) he healed everyone up to full. As he tucked the bottles away, Ulani tugged at his sleeve for his attention, holding up what looked to be another strange shard. Huh… had the totem pokemon left that behind too? It looked a lot like the first one he’d found. The same sort of clear piece with a disttorted universal look in the center of it. It was just... weird.
