With every step they took away from the alley, Jinx's dour mood began to melt away. And while hers and Sullivan's wobbly walk through the streets of Hea'Hea didn't improve her attitude, the blue-haired woman's lingering resentment disappeared the second they walked into a building with air conditioning. So, she stopped slumping her shoulders and acknowledged the strangers (i.e., Nurse Joy) around them with a friendly head nod.
With their pokemon in the hands of professionals, there was nothing to do but sit and wait; sitting down, just like everything else, took a bit of awkward coordination and the magnetized duo had to sink into their seats; their slow descent kind of reminded Jinx of riding an elevator. "I wonder what we look like to everyone else," Jinx thought and passively scanned the Pokecenter's lobby: the steady flow of trainers coming or going made the automatic doors' soft whirring and closing a constant sound.
Jinx rolled her free shoulder and popped her lips, they'd been seated for less than a minute, and the Void agent's anxious energy was already returning; Sullivan's notebook was a well-timed distraction. She snorted at the words neatly scrawled onto the new notebook paper and immediately took the pen, 'Never better. I've dealt with worse.' Briefly, Jinx considered writing 'much worse,' with the 'much' in all caps, underlined, or both. But that seemed like overkill and raised far too many questions.
'Are they a regular thing around here?' she wrote out next, on the line directly underneath her previous sentence so that it was easier to read. And then, in slightly smaller letters, she added: 'Thank you.' Jinx let the pen slide to the base of her thumb before looking unabashedly at Sullivan: 'inconspicuous' and 'glued together' didn't go together, so she didn't bother with a subtle approach. Until this point, she'd ignored Sullivan as best she could: in the same way you blocked out the boulder inexplicably chained to your ankle. Jinx pursed her lips.
Looking at Sullivan up close, she didn't know how she'd confused him for Kaeden: his facial features were sharper, whereas Sullivan's were softer; Kaeden had pale skin, Sullivan's was sunkissed; her brother's eyes were a deep red, much like her own, while the eyes staring at her were a dark hazel. Plus, Sullivan had a few inches on Kaeden. The only thing the two men had in common was the color of their hair, and even then, Sullivan's was an ombre blue, while Kaeden rocked a single shade of dark blue.
Blue wasn't a bad color on Sullivan, but Kaeden wore it better.
Her most pressing thoughts in order, Jinx, relented her stare with a sigh. "Sullivan's a real mouthful," she mumbled as an afterthought before something in her brain clicked, and she picked the pen back up. 'Sullivan's an old man name,' she wrote out, doodling a weathered face with a long beard beside it.

There was a spark of apprehension when Jinx snatched the pen from between his fingers, quickly etching down her response. Sullivan wearily eyed the response on the page and relaxed. It wasn’t an angry response, at least the way he read it, but sarcasm was very much lost in written words, and it was only through a few side glances that he was able to gauge the honesty of the claim.
He looked back at the paper as she wrote another sentence. His lips pursed into a thin frown, head tilting to the side as he drudged up sour memories. Finally, Sullivan bobbed his head in a nod; yes, they were. Painfully so. There wasn’t enough paper in his journal to archive just how problematic the Skulls could be so instead he took the pen back and wrote out his reply.
'Yes they are. Sorry if that was your first time running into them.' Sullivan squinted, spotting the little ‘thank you’ for the first time and couldn’t help but beam some what of a smile at Jinx. Not that he was sure what she was thanking him for though, it was his fault that sad attempt at a shortcut had led them to the encounter in the first place. Maybe she was remembering that fact, with how hard she was staring. Was there something on his face? Absently, Sullivan reached up to rub his cheek nervously.
The blue-haired woman etched another note and he read it over, startled in a whole new way, cheeks puffing out and brow furrowing together in confusion. 'No it’s not.' He wrote, pausing a moment before adding more. 'At least it’s not just a letter,' he unfolded the previous page and tapped at her ‘J’ with a blatant stare of his own. Not that Sullivan expected her to change her tune on just being a ‘J’ but there was a point to be made.
Sighing, he set the pencil down, shifting uncomfortably in the seat, glancing down at their sides still unnaturally attached to each other. There was still the matter of getting to the laboratory and getting some help. The man raised a hand about to sign when he caught himself, instead snatching up the pen once more. 'Do you know what’s going on? What exploded?'

Jinx ducked her head to read Sullivan's writing, then shrugged her shoulders in a laissez-faire way. "Team Skull" seemed more like an after-school school gang instead of a full-fledged villain group. Were the islands really this peaceful? Jinx found herself feeling sorry for the Alolan residents, even as she nodded her head at Sullivan's smile; they must have been so bored growing up in peace!
She giggled when he grew agitated, his cheeks puffing out like a pufferfish. Poor Sullivan grew up on a boring island and was in denial of his old man name. The blue-young woman leaned into her same-haired compatriot, reading his new sentence with a grin and the next with an indignant huff; she met his 'proof' with less humor. Jinx stuck her tongue out at Sullivan but waited until he placed the pen down to set the record straight, suppressing the urge to snatch the pen out of his hands. Their conversation would go much faster with two pens. Or, two phones. "Letters are cool and easy to remember," Jinx wrote out, pressing the nib of the pen into the paper to darken the word 'cool'. "J is my nickname. Sulli can be yours. It's cooler than Sullivan."
When neither one of them picked the pen back up, Jinx's mind began to wander. The detour to the Pokecenter provided them with a much-needed rebrief—AC for the humans; medical attention for the Pokemon—, but they couldn't stay here forever. The constant weight of another person pressing into her was starting to grate on her; this was the longest she'd ever gone touching anyone. Jinx perked up, listening to Sulli scribble out another note, but waited until after the writing had stopped to check the notebook.
Her features scrunched up, her eyebrows pulled together, her nose wrinkled, and her chin pruned as she tried to think back to the events proceeding Sulli finding her unconscious. An explosion? Had something exploded? Jinx cocked her head as if readjusting a tv antenna, then finally took up the pen, "I don't remember." That seemed a better answer than 'I electrocuted myself with my brother's tracker, a weird Pokemon broke.' Besides, her memory was allowed to be spotty! She'd been electrocuted! Still, just to satiate other potential questions, Jinx quickly added: "The last thing I remember is seeing an apple."
And then, to move the conversation along, Jinx wrote on a new line: "What are those hand gestures you keep making?" She handed Sulli the pen, miming the position his hand had taken before it grabbed the pen.
Before Sulli could respond, goosebumps tickled the back of Jinx's neck, and she turned just as Nurse Joy approached their table. If she was surprised to find Jinx staring, she didn't show it. "I'm sorry to interrupt you," the pink-haired woman began, earning a raised brow from Jinx; what did she think she was 'interrupting'? She nodded her head at her. "I'm afraid your Tyrunt–" Then at Sulli. "And your Datrix have contracted Pokerus. Thankfully, we caught the virus, so their symptoms are mild: a little dehydration and a low-grade fever. But we're going to have to keep the rest of your Pokemon for a 24-hour quarantine to monitor their vitals," she said. Nurse Joy glanced down at Junpei, opened her mouth, then reconsidered her thought with a barely perceptible shake. "Keep an eye on your Rockruff," she said instead to Sullivan. "If it starts developing any symptoms, bring it to the Center immediately. Other than that, try and stay within the city for the day, and be back here around this time tomorrow to pick your Pokemon up."
Jinx turned to Sulli, exasperated, as Nurse Joy headed back. She sighed as she wrote out, "Let's just go to the lab now. Before anything else can happen."

Sullivan stared long and hard at the message, struggling to suppress the slight flair of annoyance. He rather liked his name. Having some stranger dictate that he ought to go by a nickname -even if it was one he was used to already- at least she kept it simple- was just… rude. He took a deep breath. It wasn’t worth being angry over; obviously all the hustle and bustle of the Skulls nonsense and being stuck together by who-knows-what-means was making him unusually sensitive.
Jinx’s response didn’t help, and he deflated, sinking some into his seat. An apple? That was about as enlightening as a snuffed Charmander’s flame and equally as grim. The young man tried to wrack his own brain for potential clues to their predicament; they’d need to give the researchers at the lab something to work with if they wanted to get this resolved well… hopefully today.
Sullivan almost missed the next question etched out on the paper. His brows furrowed as confusion took his expression. What was she talking about? Hand ges- oh! Wow. The shock hit him like a headbutting Wailmer. All this time it hadn’t even occurred to him. He’d just started scribbling away in his journal and not once had Jinx seemed to question why he wasn’t just talking to her instead. It was admittedly a surprising revelation to think she’d gone along with it so long. Most would’ve snapped at him at this point. His head shook as he came back to his senses, sheepishly picking up the pen.
'Sign language.' He rapped the pen against the paper a moment. 'I’m deaf.' Setting the pen down he looked at Jinx, pointing to himself before tapping his index finger against his lips and then to his ear. He grabbed the pen again. 'Sorry, this must’ve been awkward.' It was still hard to believe it’d taken this long.
Sullivan snapped to attention when Nurse Joy appeared. Hazel-eyes narrowed in on her face as she spoke to track her words the best he could. It wasn’t easy and probably the last of his preferred choices when it came to communicating with others, but it seemed a hassle to pass her the paper pad. Jinx could hopefully answer his questions if he missed anything.
Not that he’d need to. His stomach sank as he made out the words ‘pokerus’ and pokemon names. Ah, maybe that was why Mana had been so agitated. And to think he’d sent her into battle in such a condition. Junpei gave a small lap as he was addressed, tail swishing expectantly as Sullivan gave him a worried look as he nodded.
The blue-haired man looked at his makeshift companion; it seemed he wasn’t the only one upset by the information. He nodded and bundled his things back into his bag, giving her a little nudge towards the edge of the seat so that they could get to their feet. Once they were to some degree of coordinated, he pointed to the door and took the first step to get them into a rhythm. The lab wasn’t far thankfully, maybe a five-minute walk if nothing slowed them down.
His eyes darted back and forth from the sidewalk to Jinx, eventually fishing out the journal and scribbling another note. 'I’m sorry your pokemon got sick. It’s good they caught it early though, they’ll be fine in not time.' It was hard to tell if she was upset over just that, but it seemed only right to try and provide some sort of positivity to the matter at hand.

"Oh." She didn't utter the word so much as felt her lips form a lowercase 'o' from which it fell out. 'I’m deaf.' The two words echoed through her head as she watched Sulli sign the words he'd written. Jinx reflected on the day's events, rewinding her memories, sifting through them, and trying to fit this new information into the Sullivan puzzle. Hindsight was 20/20, but when she thought back, the only time Jinx had questioned Sulli's ability to communicate was in the beginning. "You thought he was deaf or mute," she reminded herself. The young woman found herself looking back at the notebook and shrugging, her connected shoulder rolling against Sulli's. Being stuck to a stranger was awkward. Inexplicably communicating solely through pen and paper was... inconsequential; up until now, there hadn't been a need for conversation.
Before Jinx could give her thoughts written form, Nurse Joy arrived with bad news and left while the two bluenettes were still processing the information. Pokerus, Jinx had never even heard of this disease—unsurprising, given her lack of Pokemon knowledge—but Sulli didn't seem alarmed or the least bit confused at their change in plans. "Lip-reading," she thought as they stood, absently noting how much easier it was to move. They still moved about as slowly as cold oil, and the transition from sitting to standing took some planning. But, there was a marked improvement from when she and Sulli had first started out.
Jinx groaned as they stepped back outside, the island heat rolling over her like an oppressive wave. She let Sulli take the lead, their rhythmic steps easily swallowed up by the sounds of the city. In the late afternoon sun, tourists, natives, and their Pokemon moved about, popping in and out of stores, riding bikes down the street, and milling about in front of vendors. The hustle and bustle of the city were familiar, even exciting, but what Jinx didn't expect was the smiles passing locals—distinguishable by their attire and easy attitudes—gave her. Why were they smiling at her? They didn't know her. It wasn't just the residents, though. The whole city gave off a warm and inviting air that made Jinx uneasy and distrustful.
A frown was pulling at the edges of her mouth when the young woman felt something nudge her. She quickly read Sulli's note, magenta eyes flickering up to the blue-haired man, lingering there to take in his expression and determine his intentions. The hard edges of her scrutiny softened slowly, like room temperature butter, and she took the notebook. So, he was one of those: a "good person". 'I guess so. You've dealt with this before?' Maybe Pokerus was a common disease on the islands?
She wiped the sweat from her brow as they stepped into the lab, her sense of relief at finally arriving at their destination overshadowed by her impatience and her body's dampness. "HELLOOOOO!" Jinx shouted, turning heads their way. "Any magnet scientists around?"

Jinx’s response -or really lack of one- caught Sullivan off-guard somewhat. Even if he acknowledged that they’d made it this far without her calling the lack of communication on his part into question, it was still surprising that the truth didn’t garner a larger response.
Was he disappointed? Concerned? Honestly, when he thought about it, he was relieved. Things were just easier when folk didn’t make a fuss.
Instead, the focus shifted to getting to the lab and getting separated. The island native huffed a bit at the heat but wasn’t fazed. He grew up with it, liked it even and if it got too hot, knew what to do to cool down. Though maybe not while he was attached to present company; it’d be a true level of indecent to go yanking your shirt off while glued at the hip to someone else.
He glanced at the response as his journal was returned to him, head bobbing in a nod. He scribbled and flipped the notebook around to show his blue-haired companion. 'No, not personally. But I’ve read up and studied on it.' Another scribbled note. 'It’s like the common cold for Pokémon. But can make them stronger too.' Would that be enough to steel her concern? Sullivan didn’t know. He was trying to help.
He winced as they stepped into the lab. Even if he couldn’t hear it, he could feel the air rattle as Jinx shouted. His hazel eyes scanned for movement before spotting some. A young sun-kissed woman in a lab coat approached the pair, tugging a stray strand of chocolate brown hair back into her messy hair bun. Sullivan glanced at Junpei, who sat patiently watching the scene. Admittedly, some part of him was still worried that the pup might get sick and couldn't help keeping an eye on him as a result.
”Aloha! My name’s Professor Manu.” She waved at the two, turning to focus on Jinx specifically. ” I’m not sure we have any ‘magnet’ scientists here for you though. Is there something I can help you with?”

He studied Pokemon diseases. For what, fun? Jinx kept her expression mild, her eyes flickering to Sulli's following note. Since when did getting sick make you stronger? That didn't make any sense. She tossed a glance his way, determining his truthfulness in that one look. He didn't seem like the sort to lie — but then again, the best liars never did — so she'd choose to believe him for now and draw her own conclusions in the morning. If what Sulli said was true, then Apatite was better off for it. Noticing how quickly they were approaching the satellite building, she scribbled in her response. "Why do you read about Pokemon diseases?"
After her call, it didn’t take long for a scientist (anyone in a lab coat was a doctor or a scientist) to come to Jinx’s aid. She kept stoic as the woman introduced herself and lifted hers and Sulli’s connected arm at Dr. Manu's prompting. “We’re stuck,” Jinx said matter-of-factly, only extrapolating when the woman’s polite but expectant expression indicated she should. “I got electrocuted by something while I was in the jungle, and when he–” she tilted her head at Sulli. “Came to rescue me, he got shocked, and then we got stuck like this.” With her tale concluded, the blue-haired woman surveyed the lab again, paying particular attention to the equipment on display. She recognized a few from her own work and hanging with Kaeden in his lab, but there were several more whose uses she could only begin to guess.
“Okay,” Dr. Manu said, gaining Jinx’s attention. “I think there are a few things we can try. Come with me.” She gestured for the two to follow her as she headed further into the building, passing curious onlookers and their scientific machines. Jinx paused long enough to look at Suli, gauging his reaction, before she urged them forward. They didn’t have to go far to find Dr. Manu again; the woman waited patiently for them in an open room to their right. “We can try the simplest solution first and then go from there; sound good?” she asked as the two walked inside. The three stood in an empty room, and as Jinx walked to its center, she heard Dr. Manu close the door behind them. Apprehension made her body stiffen, and Jinx watched the woman with narrowed eyes. “It’s just a precaution,” she assured, catching Jinx’s glare and unclipping a pokeball from her belt.
She didn’t recognize the Pokemon that materialized from the capsule, hovering in the air with an inscrutable expression. Still, she understood the scientist’s aim when she saw the creature’s three large magnets. “Magnezone,” Dr. Manu addressed the Pokemon firmly, albeit affectionately. “Adjust your magnetic field for human subjects and use Magnet Rise. Concentrate a low frequency on just these two.” She paused, her eyebrows furrowing gently, and turned to Jinx and Sulli. “If you have any electronics on you, I’d suggest you leave them outside.” The brunette held out her hand. After a moment’s hesitation, Jinx relinquished her phone and bag. Once Sulli had done the same, Jinx watched in real-time as Magnezone turned its eyes onto the duo and raised its magnets.
There was a soft pop, and then a high-pitched ringing before Jinx felt a wave of static pass over her, like a second skin, and her hair stand up. She gritted her teeth, not in any pain but still uncomfortable, an image of a staticky TV popping into her head. Seconds passed by as a gentle humming filled the room, and just as Jinx began to feel like her blood had turned into ants, the pressure she’d grown accustomed to lifted, and the room fell silent. “How do you feel?” Dr. Manu asked, coming forward to place a hand on Magnezone’s side. Jinx didn’t answer her immediately, swinging her arms cautiously before she stepped to the side and away from Sulli without him following.
Reflexively, Jinx rubbed her hand against her shoulder, her face scrunching in mild disgust as she pulled her hand away, wet with sweat. Putting her dampness to the side, Jinx wiped her hands on her shorts as she turned to Dr. Manu, regarding the woman with newfound respect. “Thank you,” she said plainly, nodding and then extending her gratitude to her Pokemon. Jinx turned back to Sulli expectantly, suddenly unsure of how to proceed.
They were finally free of each other. Now what?
