Name: Sajahka Dakama

Stage: Thief (Stage 3)

Race: Pureblood Matori.

Gender: Male.

3 Base Traits:alertprivatefaithless

Personality:
      Simple
          GOOD
        • alert, anticipative, athletic
        • calm, capable, decisive
        • forthright, perceptive, keen
        • passionate, loyal

          NEUTRAL
        • frugal, physical
        • private, assertive, blunt

          BAD
        • amoral, crude, nihilistic
        • cynical, destructive

Sajahka pays great mind to the world around him. Without his tongue to keep him busy, this inherent trait is amplified, resulting in him seeming often more aware of subtle goings-on than his more distracted counterparts and sometimes making him come off as especially anticipative of things before they occur, his insight giving him a guise of foresight. Due to this perceptive and attentive nature, when Sajah does take action, it’s generally decisive—sometimes even abrupt. He is forthright in his choices, and rarely looks back on past decisions, regardless of whether or not they panned out as planned. Having been raised in an environment that had little room for a ‘childhood’ period, Sajah matured young and amassed as many skills necessary for caring for himself as possible, making him fairly capable as a teen in most areas relating to independence and self-help.

As a slave, Sajah’s protective mechanism was to privatize all parts of himself vulnerable to external attack and manipulation—this being most everything. The loss of his tongue only served to further drive this habit home, making Sajah initially upon attaining his freedom a very reserved and sometimes outwardly callous individual, slow to engage any more than necessary. This isn't to say, however, that Sajahka is anti-social or even a naturally introverted soul. Quite the opposite in fact, if not for the loss of his tongue and the negative impact of that on most all of his interactions, he might very well have been a very social character, as he does enjoy and appreciate company—he has just been crippled in his ability generally to communicate as he'd like, and finds himself as a result hanging largely unnoticed in the periphery most of the time. As he grows, however, particularly after settling into a work routine and having the opportunity to build social relationships over time and extended exposure, Sajah's initial stiffness is largely erased, and whenever opportunity presents itself, he is quick to contribute his two cents (having a partner who can translate for him when necessary is ever useful).

Due to his upbringing and initial lack of anything to call his own, in independence Sajah is also a very frugal individual, hoarding coin and possessions to himself and spending the bare minimum he can to get by, which — given his general lack of funds initially — leaves him with little extra regardless, but does allow him to save on occasion, particularly after his circumstances settle into a pattern with steady employment of the paid variety.

Despite being silenced physically, however, Sajah is highly assertive when it comes to himself and his choices. He spent long enough without the freedom to be his own person that now, with his freedom, he has next to zero patience for appeasing other people’s whims—when they conflict with his own, at least. In this vein, through his own methods of communication, Sajah is blunt. Limited as they are, he has no time to waste beating around the bush, and works to get across exactly what he means the first time.

Finally, although he has attained his freedom, years of slavery and mutilation at the hands of his prior owners have left Sajah cynical and faithless, even after his life takes many turns for the better. While not bitter — and even at many points undeniably happy, as he tends not to cling to the past and keeps it as much behind him as he can — Sajah has a distinctly pessimistic worldview, minimal faith in the good of any people, and non-existent faith in the gods. This does not keep him from enjoying every precious moment given him to the fullest extent that he can. And he does.

Description: Sajah has the darkest range of skin tone that Matori come in, deep blue on the exterior with a rich teal inner belly; the typical spotted markings of Matori are the lightest of his natural tones and stand out against his skin. His hair, alternatively, is a fairly bright/pastel seafoam green. Sajah’s eyes are subtly heterochromatic with his left eye being a slightly darker yellow-gold than the right, which is close to the palest yellow Matori eyes naturally come. Sajah has especially long earfins and has a tear in his right ear.

Clothing: Practical traveling clothes.

Accessories: Nothing special. His lower lip is pierced on his right.

"I don't care to revisit where I've already left footprints."
| History and Early Life |

Sajahka was born into slavery. Initially, however, it was among the more benevolent forms of captivity—in as much as any form of slavery could be considered so. Under their initial owners, his parents and the other slaves of the same masters were treated humanely and permitted to bond amongst themselves and reproduce naturally. Their Oban masters considered this to be profitable enough and beneficial in other ways so as to make itself worth it. Sajahka’s parents met under those circumstances, came to care for each other, and Sajah was sired and born: healthy, and to loving, if captive, parents.

For many years, things remained stable, his parents raised him and as soon as he was old enough, he was put to work and taught that way of life. Despite the innate hardship of slavery, however, these years were relatively peaceful. They were given enough food, lodgings, periods of rest, and minimal discipline.

Then, just before Sajah’s sixth birthday, a period of hardship overcame their owners. A great storm destroyed much of their wealth and business, and nearly half of their slaves had to be re-sold. In efforts to make the shift as ‘painless’ as such an event could be, the owners did work to sell the slaves in family units whenever possible, and Sajah’s was fortunate enough to be one of those who was purchased together, there being only three of them. Less fortunately, it became immediately evident that their new owners were not similarly ‘benevolent.’

In the hands of their new owners, the fact that Sajah and his parents were emotionally bound was a manipulation tool and little more, added to their arsenal of control mechanisms. Two days after being purchased, as though to demonstrate how ‘serious’ their threats were, Sajah’s parents were made an example of. As punishment for his mother speaking out of turn en route to wash hall, Sajah was dragged forward, and — in front of all new purchases — mutilated in the form of losing his tongue.

Life did not significantly improve from there. Despite the fact that war soon-after ended legal slavery, their new owners were not among the cooperaters, and though on the surface their people were emancipated, that emancipation did not spread in practice to Sajah and his parents, who continued to live under now-secretized brutality at the hands of their new masters. If anything, the coming of the Oban war and the emancipation of the rest of their people caused complication, and in the chaos of fighting for freedom and escape attempts, his parents were lost—whether freed or perished, Sajahka does not yet know—and he, recaptured where he was maintained under forced, indentured ‘servitude’ illegally. He has been living under those circumstances up to this point. Unbeknownst to him, however, family — with the help of the secret organization of Buhawi — is on his side, and tides are soon to turn.

FAMILY

    | Parents |

Davvi - mother - Matori Having been separated from his parents at a young age, Sajah has limited memory of his mother, and unfortunately, her memory is heavily tied to the trauma of his mutilation, as the loss of his tongue was their masters’ punishment for ‘her’ wrongdoing at the time. She features sometimes in his dreams, usually nightmares where he cannot see her face and all he hears is her screaming for him before the cut.

Bakhoro - father - Matori Sajahka has little to no memory of his father, though he has an understanding that his father and mother’s relationship was ‘good’ and that once upon a time, perhaps he was loved by both of them. At this point in Sajah’s life, however, that thought feels more like a paper fantasy than anything real.

Isatta - aunt - Matori Isatta contacted the Buhawi after her sister’s death in hopes of setting her sister’s soul to rest in peace with her son finally in ‘safety.’ Isatta was not the most welcoming of Sajah, however, and seemed to him only to be acting to clear her own conscience. She wanted little to do with him and he with her, and he has no current intentions of ever seeking her out again.

Leukos || Leukos and Sajah met in a bar. While Sajah had perfectly legitimate intentions (to rob him blind), Leukos had a particular knack for misunderstanding which happened to hop-skip he and Sajah through a whirlwind night including but not limited to: surprise groping, unintelligible hand gestures, beer calligraphy, dancing, moonlit beach walking, and hot sausages. Sajahka still robbed him when he slipped out of the other man’s bed in the morning, but it was a highly successful and memorable experience so far as he was concerned. Despite leaving the man a note to the effect however, he hadn’t expected to meet up with him again.

His expectations could not have been more misplaced. Over the course of the following weeks, he made many (often passionate) re-encounters with the man, and despite a significant amount of friction between them Sajahka finds himself compelled to continue seeking out the man's company. Eventually,
they come to an agreement: what they are doing will never 'be' anything, but still, they evidently enjoy each other's presence and time together.

All of this changes when Sajahka's friendship with Nyko comes to a head. Suddenly, Sajah is out a friend and alone without his only translator with nowhere to go. In a move of desperation, he seeks the only person he knows beyond Nyko who understand his hand signs: Leukos. By the time he makes this choice, Leukos has left for another city, but with some creative asking around, Sajahka eventually manages to track his whereabouts down to Edrao, and a training facility for animals there, where he works. This time, the balance of their relationship is entirely altered: Leukos has a 'boyfriend' at first and a job he cares about, but at the same time, his history with Sajah is enough to spurn him into helping him get a job there - and even staying to live with him as a roommate.

On a platonic level, Sajahka and Leukos have the opportunity to spend much more time together, and really get to know one another after their initial whirlwind affair, and without the distraction of thievery and insistences that neither of them are interested in anything 'more' it becomes gradually clear that both of them very much are, and their attraction to each other has not waned. In time, it all comes together shortly after Leukos finally parts ways with his newest boyfriend, and Sajah and Leu begin a romance of their own, the 'right' way.

Where it will lead is still a matter to be told.

Nyko || Nyko is Sajah’s best friend since childhood, the only man (until very recently) who he could speak to with his hand signs, and the subject of his undisclosed romantic interest. The metaphorical singing peacock to Sajah’s more understated character, Nyko brings life to any party, and it is often the case that wherever he is, Sajah is not far from it - or, such is how things were, for most of the beginning of their lives. Sajahka spent all the years that he understood such concepts very much in love with Nyko, but due to the complication of circumstances, Sajahka's uncertainty, and Nyko's interest in girls, he only ever maintained a close, platonic relationship with him.

Most recently, however, after attaining their freedom and before any of their grand plans could begin, Sajah and Nyko both came upon distractions of sorts - Nyko with a young woman fiercely bent on musical success, Nyko's passion, and Sajahka with Leukos himself, who he spent time with on many occasions to avoid thinking about Nyko's new 'friend.' Although Sajahka had always intended to follow Nyko anywhere, regardless of who he became interested in, he finds that the reality of it is more difficult to execute in practice, and is not as attentive to Nyko's impatience as he might have been. Instead, their misunderstandings come to a sharp clash just as they had intended to host auditions for their new troupe and Nyko announces he is leaving for Belrea with this girl far more dedicated to his dreams - and Sajah is not welcome to follow.

In the same instance, Sajahka makes a flurry of confessions in his attempts to bring Nyko around to an understanding - but all of it is poorly executed, and in the end, unsuccessful, leaving him out a best friend, and 'alone' in the world. After a brief period of crippling upset over this turn in events, Sajahka does manage to push himself forward again, and on the roads to come he finds that he still cares deeply about Nyko - he was his best friend, for so many years, with whom he shares a slew of important memories, one of the only positive figures in his entire childhood experience. But, they are on different paths now, and while he still hopes to one day meet with him again and witness his successes, his heartache is waning, and he has come to feel that he was selfish and blind with regards to his hopes and expectations in that department. He still loves Nyko in his own way, as a brother and a friend, and hopes to eventually have a chance to express his apologies for his own behavior that drove the man off in the first place.

Xewai || Xewai lead the Buhawi group which Sajah and Nyko have to thank for their freedom. In the little time he got to know him, Sajah’s impression of him was unusually positive.

Aqio || Sajah met Aqio in Oba’s market just prior to his departure, and aided him in conversing with a weaponsmith, from whom Sajah got his first proper set of knives.
