It wasn't long before Ava was ushered into her pokemon battle with her small Joltik. The stadium was massive, and various unknown onlookers gathered to watch them all battle from the stands. This was so exciting! Being in a real stadium with real referees for a real battle! Ava could barely keep still in her box! She waved and called out to her friend, Tera, once she came in. She was to be her very first opponent in battle. "Tera! We get to battle each other!" Ava was super excited to be battling her friend! It would be so much fun! "Good luck!" Ava had hope that she would win, but with the match up, she wasn't so sure. Bug was weak to Fire type moves, and surely Tera's Charmander knew quite a few of those! Maybe if she could keep it from moving, then Ava could get a small break from the fire attacks! Seemed like enough of a plan to her, but would it actually be enough? Either way, Ava was a little relieved that her very first battle would be against a friend instead of a student she didn't know very well, even if that friend had a fire type pokemon.
She scooped her Joltik up off of her shoulder and set him down on the ground carefully. For a little while, she sat herself on the ground. "You can do this, Fritz. Don't be scared!" she quietly said to her little bug. Compared to Ava, Fritz was a little shy. And given that this was their first battle together, his nerves were running high."Tik tik! Joltik!" Nevertheless, he was going to give it his all going up against such a large opponent. Joltik jumped further out into the stone and dirt arena, a mere yellow dot compared to everything else around him. One day, he would evolve into something a little easier to spot. But until then, the spectators would have to get some binoculars if they wanted to see Ava's pokemon! Ava called out to Tera once more. "Ready to start whenever you are!"

Flare perked up to face Evelyn when she encouraged her. A nervous nod of thanks was all the fire Pokemon could do as a response. She was getting used to other humans after all. Despite this, she could tell that this one in particular was kindhearted and meant no harm, but it didn't change her instinctual weariness.
The pink-haired girl gave both Eve and her Yamask a thumbs up when she was told that the bespectacled girl had chosen the dark floating Pokemon. "Awesome, team cool cucumber! You guys'll do great!" With both of them being the types to be cool and calm under pressure, Tera thought that they would be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament and without a doubt a fun opponent to have.
Tera's ears perked as she heard a familiar voice that was coupled with a playful tussle of her hair. "Holly! I'm doin' good! How are ya?" Her face beamed with happiness when Holly had called her 'Bubblegum'. It was the first time anyone had given her a nickname! The Charizard House girl picked up Flare from under her arms to show Holly, completely oblivious to Holly's ever so slight change in tone when she mentioned the tournament. "Ya, we were plannin' on enterin' the tourney thingy! I chose my girl Flare for battlin'!" She gleefully replied while her Pokemon's legs were dangling without support. This in turn allowed the fire type to be in direct eye contact with the little fluffy Pokemon who was casually on his trainer. Flare awkwardly raised her claw to say hi before quickly looking away.
Soon after did someone by the name of Mocha made her entrance marking the beginning of the tournament. As the match-ups were popping up on the screen, Tera's eyes scanned it for her name. "Looks like it's about to start! Break a leg Evy! I'll see ya guys on the flip side!" She said with an excited salute to the girls before leaving for the arena. The girl couldn't contain her excitement; her battle was finally starting!

Tera entered the arena pumped and ready, enthusiastically winding up her arms one at a time to loosen her joints up! But was she really ready? It didn't matter because she sure felt like she was! The first challenger before her was her friend Ava and boy was she happy to see a familiar face right off the bat! Thinking back, Tera remembered that her brunette friend had a teeny tiny Pokemon called Joltik. His typing was unknown to the girl but it looked bug-like and bugs didn't like fire so maybe she was at an advantage with Flare? Arceus knows how this pink-haired girl ever made it this far as a student...
"Hiya Ava! Good luck ta ya too!" The energetic pink-haired girl replied with gusto. After the quick exchange, the girl turned to face her still nervous Pokemon. "Lookie Flare, I know you got this... You can do this!" Tera softly said with her eyes closed as she gently knocked her head against her Charmander's. Maybe it had to do with the adrenaline, but thanks to this Flare gained a new sense of confidence and walked into the fighting arena, locking her eyes on her petite-sized adversary, watching his every move. "Yoroshiku onegashimasu!" She said as she heavily bowed at a forty-five degree angle. Her mother had drilled it into her thick skull at a young age that before every type of battle, be it a competition or Pokemon battle, she should greet her opposition with respect. When she raised her head, she was officially ready. "Aye! Let's do this Ava!"

Olivier the Referee
Olivier entered the battlefield with a confident smile on his face. This was his true calling: Official Pokemon Battle Referee. If there was a battle happening then he would be there to judge the battle. This was an important job in a world where Pokemon Battles were so dominant. Olivier was happy to be part of this tournament and if Lamia District officials had not asked him then he surely would have walked up to them and asked to volunteer. He was here now and he would be performing his job with pride! The competitors had entered the battlefield meaning it was time to get this battle rolling.
"This battle is about to get underway! The competitors are summoning their Pokemon right now. A hot battle will soon commence so trainers get ready!" Olivier spoke with a clear voice into the mic that was on his ear. This allowed everyone in the stadium to listen to his voice. Once both trainer and pokemon were ready, Olivier raised his red and green flag in the air.
"Let the battle...begin!"

Tera was taken by surprised when she saw that Oliver, the guy who was refereeing yesterday's ancient soccer game also happened to be a Pokemon battle referee as well. Nonetheless, as soon as the man raised both of the flags to officially announce the start of the match, the pink-haired girl's facial features switched from playful to a more serious look as focused on the arena before her, ready to change gears.
Even if Ava was a friend, Tera wouldn't be going easy on her. The thought didn't even cross her mind. In fact, Tera would have found it disrespectful to her friend if she did so! "Flare! Let's start this shindig up hot! Use ember!" The girl felt at ease calling out Flare's moves. Her last minute studying her fire type's(and her psychic/flying in case he was the one who was chosen by the coin) move set actually paid off!
Without missing a beat, Tera's fire type, who was ever vigilant on the little yellow bug-looking Pokemon's movements, locked in on Ava's Joltik like a heat missile on its target and backed up slightly to prepare her attack. This happened rather quickly; the fire lizard Pokemon focused on the flame at the tip of her tail to make the fire grow larger in size. Small embers started to pop off of the flame as it grew. Once she was satisfied with the size, Flare spun quickly as she lunged towards the rival Joltik, releasing fiery sparks of ember from her tail as she did so. The spray of the ember attack was not solely focused on the Joltik alone; Flare made sure to widen the range slightly to make it more difficult for the tiny target to dodge.

As the referee called their battle to begin, Tera and Flare were quick on the draw. As soon as Ava heard toe dreaded word 'ember', she was quick to yell "Fritz, try to get away!" The little bug tried to scurry away, but was still caught up in Flare's flame attack. He was too small to get very far away from the wide range of fire doused upon him. She had feared that Tera would start off with a fire move. She squinted to look at him, thankful that he didn't seem to have any burns - with how small Fritz was, it was a little hard to tell. Though shaken, he seemed as ok as he really could be after a fire attack.
Hit or not, Ava had a plan. Tera may be her friend, but that did not mean the girl would concede so easily. Even if the typing wasn't in her favor. "Fritz! Shake it off and use Thunder Wave!" Perhaps keeping the foe immobilized would help Fritz land some hits on the little fire dragon. Fritz gave himself and Flare some distance, jumping back and shaking his tiny body. As sparks flew off his back, he focused on sending a wave of electric energy to Flare, one that would hopefully keep her from moving and attacking. Especially since Fritz was up against a foe that knew Fire attacks, an attack he as a bug is weak to, less attacks were better. However, Ava did worry about their offense. Fritz could make opponents weaker, however, he only knew a bug type attack, which probably wouldn't help against Flare. She wasn't so sure about their position in the match up, thinking about that. Winning may just be a miracle. Either way it went, Ava knew that the two had a lot of work to do. And this battle was far from over yet.
Round 1: Tera: Flare hits Fritz with Ember (Super Effective!), Fritz is not burned Ava: Fritz uses Thunder Wave. 100% Accuracy, so no roll needed. Induces Paralysis if hit, so no roll needed.

Tera cheered as she watched her fire Pokemon's ember attack made contact with Ava'slittle Joltik, at least that what she thought since she couldn't really tell at the distance she was at. The toothy grin on Flare's facial expression confirmed that she indeed hit her mark. This small victory was short lived as Ava and Fritz were quick on the counter attack. "Fritz! Shake it off and use Thunder Wave!" The pink-haired girl's happy facial expression soon turned into a worried and quizzical one. While she did study her own Pokemon's moves, she had completely forgotten to study other moves as well! From the move name itself she could tell it was an electric move, but that was about it. Well, whatever it was she thought that Flare could handle it. All Tera could see from her side was that the little bug Pokemon had presumably hit Flare with that thunder wave attack which caused her Pokemon to buckle down only to slowly get up a few good seconds later.
"Great job Flare! Hit'em with another ember attack!" The girl paused, seeing that something was obviously wrong with her Charmander since she wasn't responding to her command. "Flare?" Taking a look closer at her, she girl finally noticed that small sparks of electricity were emitting out of the fire Pokemon's body. "Oh... Oh no! Hang in there Flare!" Unsure of what to do at this point, this was all she could think of to say or rather shout at her Pokemon and she hated it. She hated seeing her Pokemon convulse in pain and she couldn't do anything about it.

Thunder Wave had successfully struck itself down on Flare, preventing what would have been another devastating attack on her little pokemon. Being hit with Ember again wouldn't had been good at all! The fire move had already done so much; Ava didn't want to see it done again for the rest of the battle, if she could control it! Seeing a pokemon as tiny as Fritz get hit with something like that was just awful. But Ava was sure that if they got through this fight, there would certainly be more of it to come. Many of her peers had fire type pokemon, putting Ava at a disadvantage as one of the few who came with a bug pokemon. Despite the odds, Ava had some faith. Bad typing didn't mean they were done for yet!
As much as Ava felt bad for Tera and her pokemon - and she genuinely did - this was a competition and she did want to win her very first battle. Maybe they would go to heal their pokemon together when this was all over. But until then, Ava tried not to feel bad and gave another order. "'Atta boy, Fritz! While they're down, use Screech!" Fritz gave some more space between himself and the paralyzed dinosaur, letting out a shrill squeal. "Joltik!" Fritz was a lot louder than his owner had anticipated. Ava cringed at the sound, quick to plug her ears and wait for it to be over with. Thankfully, it didn't last very long. But hopefully, it would put Flare off guard long enough for Fritz to get some easier attacks in. Ava could only hope that it would be enough.

Before Tera could come up with an inkling of an idea to counter the paralysis, Ava and her Joltik were already on their way to making their next move. Soon after Ava gave another command did a high pitched sound boom out of her Joltik, causing Tera's Charmander to futilely shield her ear holes in hopes of easing the sound. So taken off guard, Tera didn't even have the chance to command a dodge! The girl was unexpectedly impressed by how something so cute and small in stature could be emitting a sound so loud and unpleasant. Flare found it more than just unpleasant; although the screeching lasted for a few moments, it was almost unbearable for her. The female Charmander, still feeling the tactile pain and convulsing every now and then thanks to the previous electric attack, now had to deal with an additional pain in the form of something so piercingly audible ringing in her ears. "Flaaaare! You 'kay?" Flare at this point had difficulty hearing; she could hear her trainer's voice fade in and out, but not the content of what she was saying. Turning back slightly, enough for her to see her trainer while still keep her peripherals on her opponent, she saw that Tera face showed and obvious mix of worry and fear, a face she hadn't seen before. "Charmander!" Flare cried as loud as she could to reassure her. The fire type, though unsure of what her pink-haired friend said, nodded to show the girl she still wanted to battle before turning back towards Fritz. Flare had no intention of backing down and she wanted to believe that her trainer still felt the same as she did. The red liazrd could only hope that she could back up her intentions.

A bug type against a fire type was certainly an uphill battle, but Ava was making it work. Fritz's screech attack certainly caught everybody off guard - Tera and Flare included. Ava looked up to Tera, who seemed a little worried. Whether it was for the battle or for her pokemon, Ava wasn't too sure. Despite the troubling expressions on her friend's face, Ava pressed on. Hopefully, Flare would be a lot more susceptible to attack now. "Fritz! Use Fury Cutter!" It was his one attack move, and the two of them were determined to pull it off. Ava wasn't sure when he would learn another one, so this would have to do. Fritz leaped through the air and towards the paralyzed Flare, aiming to slash at the pokemon's torso with it's tiny yet sharp feet. "Tik tik!"he cried out as he went in for the attack. Ava feared the attack wouldn't even register, given how small he was already. What if it wasn't even as bad as a paper cut? Either way, this was all they had, so she went with it.
Her mind wandered onto Flare's paralysis. How long would it last? Ava honestly didn't have any clue about the duration, with the exception that healing the pokemon would fix it after the battle. That was good because if she somehow permanently paralyzed Tera's pokemon, the girl may never forgive herself! But this was the second move in a row where Flare couldn't do anything. Maybe if it kept up for a while longer, Fritz could make up some damage with continued Fury Cutter attacks. On the battlefield, Fritz felt empowered. Taking down something two feet taller than he was - or at least preventing it from moving - was a rather nice feeling. Even if it was happening to a pokemon he had gotten to know. He wasn't going to just quit, however.

Tera had half a mind to forfeit the match now, seeing that Flare was still unable to move properly even now. She thought that something was definitely wrong with her Charmander. Thoughts of the possibility of this battle causing permanent damage to Flare plagued her mind. While the girl was lost in her head, their opponents were quick to make their next move. Snapping back to the battle at hand when she heard Ava's voice, Tera tried to give her Charmander a counter move as quickly as she could. "Quick Flare! Dodge and use ember again!" Tried as hard as the Charmander could to do as her trainer commanded, the fire lizard Pokemon still couldn't move giving her the only option of struggling in place and awaiting for impact as the little bug Pokemon swiftly charged at her. "Chaaar!" A painful, blood curdling cry soon echoed throughout the battlefield as Fritz's small stinger-like feet sliced at Flare's upper torso. The pain that the reptilian Pokemon was feeling from the memorable soundbite of a shriek had been easing up, but was then rapidly and unwantedly replaced by the tormenting sensation of being slashed at by tiny stingers. The paralysis was making the area where she was struck from the fury cutter all the worst; the numbing pain of prickling pins and needles on her skin intensified around her torso area. It felt like the prickling had turned into piercing. "D-Don't give up Flare!" Tera said seemingly hesitantly as she tightly cupped her hand into a fist. The girl was unsure if this was what she still wanted, but giving up on Flare now would probably hurt her Pokemon more than the pain she was currently feeling so she decided to press on...

Paralysis had taken a serious toll on Flare during the course of the fight. He was still unable to move after dishing out the very first attack in the round. Ava was starting to feel bad. Tera was her friend. An opponent, yes, but still a friend. Seeing her like this wasn't a great feeling. "Tera!" Ava called out to the pink haired girl. "He'll be ok! We can heal together when this is all over!" Ava could only hope it would help calm her friend. She could relate to the feeling. While she wasn't sure if electric pokemon could even be paralyzed, it was nerve wracking to think that Fritz would go up against pokemon far larger than he was, and Fire Type pokemon that could easily burn him to a crisp! The idea of him going out and fighting all of these larger pokemon was frighting, but pokemon seemed to be a lot more resilient that people were. Ava knew she wouldn't be able to do something like this, even as athletic as she was!
Ava still had to give Fritz some direction. The battle was still ongoing, whether or not Ava felt bad for Flare and Tera. "Fritz! Again! Fury Cutter!"Ava didn't really have any choice in attack move, so she went with Fury Cutter again. The young girl had no notion that it would do more damage the more times you used it in a row. Fritz went back on offense, digging further into the skin deep cuts he had created just before. "Tik tik!"he yelled, signalling to Ava that he was able to attack still. Honestly, it was still a little hard to see him against the brightly colored Charmander. Ava had to trust that he was able to attack still. Maybe they would be able to win this after all. Ava's side of the fight was beginning to look up.

How did a battle that started so well for Tera and Flare ended up that way it was now? The girl couldn't help but blame herself for her ignorance. Tera had a hard time looking at the field; she didn't want to look at Flare, the first Pokemon she ever got, in so much pain knowing that she couldn't do anything about it. She did look up though when Ava called her name, albeit she did it slowly and absentmindedly. The next few words that her friend spoke made her feel worse and worse and then... better? Worse because those words reminded her just how much she was lacking as a trainer, to forget that the practically miracle like healing that existed in the Pokemon Centers. Worse because she must've worried her friend to make her say such a thing to her during the battle. And better since these words reminded her that the battle wasn't over yet! She and Flare still had a chance, even if it was but a sliver of hope. "OOOOOHHHH!!!" The girl let out a sudden battle cry of sorts after slapping herself, realizing how foolish she was being throughout the battle for hesitating so much. She really needed to thank Ava, regardless of who came up on top, for her kind words after the Pokemon battle was over. "CHARMANDER!!!" Tera's battle cry inspired her fire lizard Pokemon to do one of her own which provided the girl with another reminder as to why she could give up just yet.
With her cheeks now red from the slaps and her hope reignited, Tera was back to her positive self! "Flare!!! Les give it all we got!" The Charizard house girl said with gusto and a fist in the air. While Ava did encourage them, whether the brunette was aware of this or, she did also give another command to her Joltik to use another Fury Cutter. "Dodge it and give'em one more ember!" Unable to dodge Fritz's speedy attack, the fire type Pokemon let out a loud pain filled growl as the yellow Pokemon's painfully pointed feet dug into the same area that he struck the first time, but this time was different. Flare was able to move and took the opportunity to retaliate. As she took the hit, Flare began charging her flame. Once the bug Pokemon finished his slashing motion and was ready to back off, the orange-red Pokemon released another spray of ember in his direction.

Ava couldn't hold back an audible giggle at her friend's sudden realization. How could she had forgotten that they were going to heal their pokemon just after this was over? Either way, Ava was glad that she and Flare suddenly got some energy back into the fight, even if for what would be the tail end of it. Ava shot her a thumbs up from the other side of the field. Opponent or not, Tera was her friend! Ava watched as she ordered Flare to do another ember, though wasn't expecting a whole lot. The last few times, the paralysis took care of that. Not this time. Suddenly, Flare was charging her flame again! Before Ava could call for Fritz to dodge it, the fire hit him. He let out a sudden cry of pain, just as surprised as Ava was. Better late than never, Ava supposed, but it would have been better if it hadn't hit at all!
Ava squinted to get a look at Fritz. "You good, buddy?" she called out, unable to tell if he was burnt."Tik! Joltik!" Fritz yelled back, a bit battered but he didn't sound like he was in a whole lot of pain. With a grin, Ava called out once more. "Alright then! Hit 'em with Fury Cutter again!" For the third time in a row, Fritz leaped into the air and went to further dig into Flare's torso, just as he had been when Flare was affected by the paralysis that he had caused. It was apparent that both pokemon had gone through a great deal, each in their own way. And with Tera in better spirits, Ava was a lot happier with the fight than she had been before. Plus after this, the two could relax before one of them went further on!

The Winner for this battle has been decided and it is....Tera and Flare!
The decision was based on the following: - Joltik's Timid nature (which lowers Attack) causing Fury Cutter to be weaker. - Fire resists Bug meaning Fury Cutter was only doing half damage even after the boost it got from STAB and from using the attack consecutively. - Charmander's only fired two Embers, but their power would have been more than enough to take out Joltik who is weak against Fire.
Joltik put up a great fight and it would have won if Charmander had been paralyzed one more time. This is because one Ember would not have been enough to take out Joltik, but since Charmander managed to attack twice then she came out victorious.
