[Big Hobbit]

It was around midday and the little cub was trotting about on his own. He had to squint his eyes a bit due to the brightness of the sunlight pouring over the lands that day.

Taranu had been playing with his siblings when he'd been unceremoniously knocked over by one of them. He had rolled rather ungracefully, stood, and proceeded to stomp off with a huff. With his budding ego damaged, the small boy decided to seek out his mother rather than wrestle with his brother and sisters. Taranu wandered over to where he knew she would be and prepared to demand her attention with his childish charm.

"Mama, what are you doing?"

Phew...no one had told her having five cubs was going to be so draining. Fastný knew she had a great big family to support her and her cubs but something made her want to do as much as she could on her own. Their father was long gone so there was no male to assist her, but that didn't ruffle her feathers too much. At least now their eyes were opened and they could entertain themselves for a while.

She rested outside of their den as they played, her eyes half open but not really focused on anything. It wasn't until one of her sons came to speak to her that she opened them properly and lifted her head, a warm smile on her face.

"Just resting, Taranu," she said, leaning in to nuzzle him with her nose. "Adults enjoy having nap time too, you know."

Taranu purred happily when his mother acknowledged him. He affectionately rubbed his head against hers and settled down next to her. He might as well take advantage of the opportunity to have his mother all to himself.

"I thought grownups didn't need to take naps anymore cause they're grown up," he replied inquisitively as he stretched out his short limbs. Why would grownups need to take naps when they were so big?

The small boy had never liked having to stop whatever he was doing to lay down for nap time himself. One of the many aspects of adulthood that Taranu was idealistically looking forward to was the omittance of nap time. That and being able to overpower his siblings.

Fast had to chuckle softly at her son's words. It always seemed that cubs hated napping while adults couldn't get enough of it. "Grownups like to take naps," she corrected, butting her nose gently against Taranu's forehead. "Because you cubs wear us out."

She gave a yawn and settled down, golden eyes focused fondly on her son. He was quite similar to her in terms of color, but she could tell his attitude was far different than hers had been at that age.

"Had enough of your siblings, hm?" she hummed softly. She had come from a decently sized litter as well and knew that sometimes being around her brothers and sisters could get overwhelming, but they always had each others backs despite that.

Taranu huffed, he couldn't understand. To him, it was the adults that were always having all the fun. It seemed like everyday someone had an exciting new story to tell about their adventures beyond the borders. The small boy couldn't wait until he was big enough to travel into the outside lands with a group of cool looking reavers.

"They're annoying! And they don't play right," he said with a pout on his face. Taranu was a larger than average cub, but he still did not match the size and weight of some of his siblings. Thus, it was easy for him to get knocked around at times.

"Mama, when am I going to be big?"

Her son's answer made her chuckle a bit as she shifted, getting more comfortable on the ground. She could remember her and her siblings running around and playing when they were younger, and despite the fact that they all got along, arguments were bound to rise up. But as soon as one of them got in trouble with a lion that wasn't their sibling, boy did they come together to tell them off!

"Too soon," she said, reaching out with a paw to playfully tug Taranu closer. "You'll be an adult before the year has come full circle, my dear. Enjoy being a cub while you can. Once you're big like me you'll long for the days that you could play and have nothing else to worry about."

She nuzzled his nose with her own, a fond smile on her face. "But you grow a little every day, as long as you make sure to eat and play. Sounds easy, right?"

"I guess so," he replied thoughtfully.

To him it still seemed so far away, and being big and strong seemed so much cooler than being weak and tiny. He put his small paw on top of her's and tried to imagine being big like his mother. The only image that he could come up with was one of a larger version of his current self though. He couldn't imagine being different.

"What was it like when you were little? Did you like being a cub?," he asked as he nestled into his mother's paws, enjoying the extra attention he was getting.

Fast smiled a bit as her son placed his paw on hers. There was a huge difference, of course, but she knew before long he would match her size. Even though she was god born and quite large, his father had been slightly bigger than she. The cubs themselves were quite big as well, not as big as she had been, but they'd certainly grow large. Even Taranu, the smallest of the bunch, would find his growth spurt satisfying, she was sure.

"Oh, I loved it. What cub doesn't?" she said with a chuckle. "Playing all the time, pretending to be Reavers, finding treasure..." Of course the treasure had simply been shiny rocks or strange bugs, but to her and her siblings they had been the best things ever. She leaned in to nuzzle his side affectionately, still smiling.

"You're in such a hurry to grow up you'll miss all the fun when you're little. Soon you'll have responsibilities," she said with a fake shudder. "And chores and things to see to every day and you won't have time to play."

Well, chores and responsibilities certainly didn't sound like anything fun to him. Especially by the way his mother had spoken the words. They sounded like a whole lot of boring things that he'd rather not be doing.

"No time to play??," he said incredulously. The idea that a day would come when he wouldn't have any time to play worried him. Taranu couldn't think of what he would possibly be doing other than running around with his siblings all day. The thought of it made him miss their presence.

"I guess being little isn't so bad if I don't have to do boring stuff," Taranu decided and said, "See you later mama, I'm gonna go find everyone!"

With that he scampered off to find his brother and three sisters and forget the troublesome thoughts of not having time to play and future responsibilities.

The large lioness nodded somberly as the cub repeated her words. Indeed, the lack of playtime was awful. Thankfully as a mother she now had an excuse to play, at least for a few months while her children grew.

"Have fun!' she called out after Taranu as he scampered off again to be with his siblings. Smiling, she lowered her head to her paws once again to close her eyes. No time for playing, no time for napping...being and adult was rough. It was good that she had her litter to look after now, though. It reminded her of her own cubhood and how much fun she had had growing up with her siblings. Hopefully Taranu and the others would enjoy their time just as much as she had.
