In the Garden of Monsters
"Alright Ari, use Aqua Jet." Nikki called out, noticing how the Volbeat barely missed Ari. That was a close call, but at least Ari had managed to dodge.
Ari said nothing to the Volbeat, tired of speaking and she had nothing to say. This Volbeat had his own issues and Ari didn't feel like arguing. Instead of responding with words, she simply followed Nikki's commands and charged. Water enveloping her body as she attempted to hit Volbeat with an Aqua Jet attack.
The boy caught sight of the Bidoof but there was no attack from the pokemon. Instead it seemed to look briefly at them and go back to it's business. It would seem there was no fight coming from this pokemon unless they started one. Keeping his face blank, he would calmly but surely walk past it trying to continue onward. There was no point in fighting an unnecessary battle. Despite what the shinobi handbook said about eliminating every enemy, they had a mission to complete and doing so would be a complete waste of time. The mission was the most important thing right now.
Koga walked past the Bidoof as well. Karasu hadn't said anything nor made any move to have a fight, start a fight or anything at all to do with a fight. The Skarmory was weary, keeping an eye until they would be able to be out of sight of the pokemon. Who knew what could happen when one's back was turned?
The area was quiet once more. Though he could see something farther off in the distance. Were they approaching something new? He slowed his pace a little, being more cautious of what could be there. New places, new surroundings meant new predators. They needed to keep their senses on high alert. Who knew what could be stalking around, awaiting?
After a hand signal from Karasu, Koga took to the air. Karasu could scan the surroundings from below and he could try and keep alert up here. The Skarmory's keen gaze flickered back and forth trying to catch anything that might be hiding..

Ari missed!
Perhaps it was the low lighting, the seeping darkness, but once again, the attacker would miss. The Volbeat couldn't help a mirthless chuckle, but this wasn't the time to gloat. With a whistle, he began to hum a lot, viscous Bug Buzz.
Karasu was on high alert but his thoughts wandered a bit as he crossed the lily pads that were making his path across the bog. The sound of water was soothing but it could also make it hard to see anything that popped out of the water. His thoughts were of the Lapras he had fought. He wondered if she was still around this area. When he had come back from an adventure, the pokemon had been gone. Koga hadn't been strong enough back then...but he was stronger now.
As Koga flew both over Karasu and the water, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary. It was surprising that when he walked with Karasu that the lilypad path was able to hold his weight. The metallic bird wasn't exactly the lightest creature...

Ari missed, and the Volbeat looked determined. Nikki frowned and glared at the offending pokemon. "Ari, try to dodge it." Nikki said, watching as the Volbeat prepared to attack again.

(20-8 ) + ( 8-8 ) = 12 DMG! Ari is at two HP!
Surprised, the Volbeat reconciled as he bounced off the Squirtle. He... hadn't exactly meant to come in so strong. Despite his rough angry, he preferred tactics and talking to outright force. No, the fighting he generally left to his better half... but she was no longer here. Refusing to dwell, he took to the air again, curious as to Ari's next move.

The lilypads that formed the path before Karasu would rather sharply begin to shake and bounce. In fact, the two largest before him suddenly burst into dozens of tinier lilypads... or ther, Lotads. For whatever reason, they'd been quiet and clumped, but for now, they felt the rhythm in their soul and the groove in their heart. Yes, is the muted noises and bright lights flickering under the water, it seemed the Lotad were having an underwater dance party. The water practically foamed, a disgusting algae-filled mess that rocked wildly about.
And not only had they neglected to invite Karasu, they'd created a a particularly annoying obstruction! For the water around Karasu was surprisingly deep, even discounting the strange sucking mud in the swampbed. It wasn't particularly safe, but that left Karasu the option of trying to cross the happenin' party before him. Of course, there was always retreating and trying to find another way...
[Turn around and lose one progress? try to wade the murky muck? Jump over and try to land safely? Either way, roll 1 D20]

The Volbeat connected, and hard. Nikki could tell that Ari had taken on quite a bit of damage. She had an option, use her only potion to heal Ari and keep the battle going, or risk having Ari faint. It was still early in her journey, and she wasn't sure if she'd need the potion later. But she wanted to give Ari a chance. Hopefully the Volbeat wouldn't attack again. "Ari, come here. I'd like to use this potion on you." Nikki said, taking the potion out of her bag. Ari walked over and Nikki sprayed her with the potion.

The Volbeat cocked his he to the side, watching the pair. Really, relying on a human to keep healthy? That Squirtle wouldn't have survived a moment in the wilderness. With a bit of disdainful, he began to clap sarcastically, tail light flickering in an odd, disjointed way. Without meaning to, the Volbeat was enticing Ari with an Encore move, which would lock him into one attack!

Ari sighed, "Feeling better?" Nikki asked, and Ari nodded. They turned their attention back to the battle in time to see the Volbeat using encore. "Shake it off Ari." Nikki said.

((Correct. Using an item like a potion uses up your attack turn.)) Encore is now in effect! Turns remaining: 6 Must roll >19 on defense to break out.
Despite the Volbeat's accident, it seemed the move would take effect. For now, the only move the Squirtle could use during her attack turn was Aqua Jet. Not that the Volbeat minded; he'd come out here for a fight, and that's what he wanted. With a hum, he'd float up into the air again, quite lazy for a defense.

Nikki wasn't aware that encore had taken effect, but it didn't really matter. "Alright Ari, use Aqua Jet again." Nikki said. Water enveloped Ari as she prepared her attack and charged at the Volbeat.

The Volbeat barely dodged that attack. It'd been a little closer than he would have liked... so perhaps he needed to step up his game. Maybe this Squirtle wasn't going to be such a pushover... at least she was keeping the fight alive. No thanks to her trainer. The Volbeat swooped lower, and began to glow bright. The lights gathered at the bottom of his tail, which he turned to face Ari. He was trying to use Flash!

Ari missed! That was disappointing.......and also frustrating. "Close your eyes Ari." Nikki said, as soon as she noticed that the Volbeat was attempting to use Flash. Both Nikki and Ari shielded their eyes in the hopes that the Flash wouldn't effect them much. Nikki wasn't a fan of bright lights to begin with, and Flash was her least favorite move that a pokemon could learn. It could come in handy, but it just wasn't something she liked.
