xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThe need to know about this Matori

Name Gael

Stage Massif

Race Water Earthling

Gender Male

Aspiriations Gael hopes to reach his goal of becoming a Fortress. While he is a little slight for the time being he hopes to bulk up to fit the job.

3 Base Traits Respectful, Conflicted, Blunt

Description With a lean muscled body Gael is considered athletic. His skin holds true to Matorian roots, with the lighter under color and a darker shade covering the rest. His markings resemble that of the rest of his race. His hair is mostly black with that dark blue/green seen on some males and his eyes are a stunning orange. As a style his hair is semi-long, going just past his shoulders, and pulled back away from his face. He also seems to have some scars. Most prominent of them are the few that are on his right arm, looking as though he was scratched by an animal, and the two jagged lines that are along his rib cage. Gael also has a tattoo that encircles his neck and it looks like a banded necklace.

Clothing Gael wears tight fitting clothing with some extra fabric hanging from it. Use this as a reference. Though it will of course fit better with his tribe's clothing.

Accessories None currently.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxWhat to expect when interacting

Gael was brought up to be respectful, both to his elders but also to those who deserve it. It was something his mother taught him and all of his siblings before she passed. He rarely fails to show his respect to others. When he does it is usually for a good reason. Either he has been offended or was shown that the person in question didn't deserve it. There will always be a cause for him not to be respectful.

After losing his mother Gael withdrew from the family. Not just because of grief but because she was the one that held them close. His father threw himself into his work and stayed away from home more and more so it caused some deep seeded dislike within Gael. As his elder brother took on the role of man of the house he seemed to become more of an introvert. While his Aunt and her son moved in with them to make things easier, he isn't too happy about it all. He feels that his aunt is trying to replace his mother.

Since he grew up in Matori as a “free” earthling he has not been made to fear what happens when one speaks their mind. So he will often times say what is on his mind. He fails to see the reason to keep the truth from people. Since he also has a respectful streak he does not use a snide tone or even deliver his blunt words with malice. He will do his best to convey them as nicely as possible. This does not mean he is honest, just that he will say what he thinks or feels. To outsiders anyways. When it comes to his family he usually stays quiet. Being that he knows he will always have to face his family he decides to keep most of the harsher thoughts to himself. So he has never told his aunt what he thinks and because of this he feels as though he is walking on ice when it comes to interactions with her.

The conflicted nature that can usually be seen within Gael comes from the warring thoughts within his mind. Ranging from how he should treat his father, to the level of closeness he should have with his siblings. While he knows it is not his father's fault for pulling away from the family he cannot justify the action. He also knows that he should be more active with his siblings, spending time with them, having dinner with them, even helping them to read or do what it is they want to do. However, Gael wants to have his space away from them since they cling. He doesn't want to appear selfish. There are many things that seem to pull him in more than one direction and it causes him to be in conflict with himself.

His interactions with outsiders really depends on the nature of the person he meets. For instance, he hates the Oban but if he were to find a genuinely good one out of the bunch he would likely extend some friendship. It does not mean he likes the fire tribe, and in fact he seems to resent them as much as the next Matorian. If he were to come across another of the earthling tribes he would extend stiff civility and even the respect they deserve until such time as deeper friendship can be made. Alkidikes are a tribe he wishes to avoid. He's heard the rumors about the daughters of Aisha and doesn't wish to come face to face with any. He believes that their hate for the rest of the world rules them just as much as it had ruled the Oban when they had enslaved the Matori.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThe tale of his past

Gael's mother, Anisi, died in childbirth while bringing his little sister into the world. It was a hit to the family that they don't seem to be able to get over. His father, Tsia, threw himself into his work as a metalsmith, staying away from the house more and more, and his aunt moved in with her son to help the other children cope. Gael's eldest brother, Baiel, is the one that takes care of everything. He seems to have filled the parental role rather well. His little sister is constantly doted upon. He thinks that it is mostly due to his other siblings not wanting her to think she was at fault for their mother's death. The new dynamic in the family has left Gael feeling a bit out of place and with an itch to travel, but it also made him want to be strong. Despite him having many siblings he does not feel a strong connection to any of them. It is his cousin that he relates to most. When he and his cousin were old enough to make the choice on their own they went to the market to get tattoos. While his cousin got matching bands around his wrists, Gael decided he would get a similar design but use it as a makeshift necklace instead. Never once did he consider others would see it as a symbol of slavery since he himself saw it as his freedom to choose what to get. And it also had a deeper meaning for him and his cousin.

The male matori gave a frustrated grunt as he kicked hard at the dirt directly in front of him. He'd gotten into a fight with his brother. He wanted to say again but the last time something this bad had come up between them it was when their father had first decided to up and abandon the family for his work. Gael thought back to that particular argument and tried to remember just what it had been about. Was it who would step in to fill the mans's shoes? Possibly. Though in retrospect his brother filled the father role better than he would. His sibling had the patience and understanding for the little ones. Gael seemed to be in a rush to do things and never took the time to really see if they understood. He was the worst big brother when it came down to it. At least he thought so. He didn't know about the rest of his siblings opinions of him.

This fight however, had been about something else entirely. This fight had been about Gael's attitude. Their father wanted his boys to follow in his footsteps and for the most part all of them didn't mind. Except Gael. He wanted to be something else. Anything else really. It had upset their father and had caused him to leave during one of the few visits that he came home. The young matori boy hadn't meant to anger his father or to steal away the little bit of quality time his siblings had with the man but it had happened. Gael's older brother had taken it out on him too.

The yelling that had happened afterwards had scared his little sister. And if there was one thing that he didn't like it was when his darling little sibling cried. It pulled at his heartstrings and made him feel like the worst person in the whole world. Gael took a deep breath then let it out in a huff as he brought his hands up to rub at his face roughly. He knew better than to argue with his older brother about trivial things like that, but to have something blamed on him was a bit unfair. It wasn't like he up and told his father to leave and never come back.

With a groan he walked a bit more slowly taking his time to think about how to fix the now wide gap between him and the rest of his siblings. Gael didn't want to become a metal smith. He wanted to be something more, something stronger. Surely there had to be a way for him to explain it to them so that they would understand that. When he didn't feel like walking any farther the boy moved toward the waters and plopped down in the warm sand so that he could sit. His hands lay at his sides carelessly and he stared at the rolling waves as they made their way toward the shore. He guessed his family was just like those waves.

One following right after the other. A uniform movement. A predestined game of follow the leader. It was fine for waves but he didn't want to be like that in life. He wanted to be that one rogue wave that did what it wanted. Anything not to be just like the others. Leaning back the young matori let himself lay back and stare up at the sky. The clouds were a better example of what he wanted to be. No one looked exactly like the other. They were all unique. As he lay there Gael lifted one hand up so that he could reach toward a cloud that reminded him of a spiral shell. “Is it too much to ask?” He posed the question aloud.

Was it really too much to ask that he not have to follow in his father's footsteps? Would it kill anyone in his family if he didn't become a metal smith? After all, his elder brother was going to do just that. His younger brother was as well. So did he have to follow suit? There was just too many choices in the world for him to ignore. Archer. Spear man. Shaman. Heck, he might even want to be a fisherman. Well, not truly, but to be able to have the choice would be nice. It was really all he wanted.

He heaved a sigh and closed his eyes. Maybe if he let things cool down at home for a while it would be alright to go back later and talk to his brother about it. Surely he could make his older sibling see his point of view. He had to if he wanted to keep his sanity, or what remained of it.

As he lay there with his eyes closed he let his thoughts fall away from the problem at hand. It would do him no good to brood over it. Besides, the sun was on his face and it warmed him, making him feel good. Even with his clothing covering most of him he felt cool in the breathable material. “This is how life should be, just like this.” Gael said to himself quietly. The pleasant sound of the ocean waves hitting the shore, the warm sun, and a relaxed Matori. It just made sense. If only I could get my brother to see it this way, he thought wryly. No longer did he voice his opinions or thoughts, instead he kept them to himself. I guess I could bring him here and let him experience it for himself. It was a random thought that he gave careful consideration. Would his brother appreciate the effort? Or would the experience be lost on him?

"Likely he wouldn't understand this way of life. He'd probably call me lazy." Gael's eyes came open again and he moved to sit up. For a moment he sat there but eventually he did get to his feet and pointed himself in the direction of home. He needed to return and make sure everyone was alright.

He knew what he wanted to do with his life. And it wasn't metal working. Gael had known even before he had followed Kani out of Matori and into Sauti. He wanted to protect others, he wanted to be the fortress they could depend on. So now he only had to explain it to his family so that they would leave him alone about following in their father's footsteps. Of course that didn't mean they would accept it. His decision. In fact he was sure there would be some resistance from his older brother. No, he couldn't think about that now.

Gael needed to focus on the positives. He knew what he wanted to be; a Fortress. A class of warriors that used a shield to fight their opponents. Plus, he already had some experience in doing so since he had disappeared with Kani into the fight with the Alkidikes. That was something he was sure his family was going to freak out about. After all, he hadn't told them where he was going or that he had been there. When he had gotten home he was too concerned with Kani's injuries.

His first order of business would have to be getting himself a shield to use. Then he would need to find a teacher, someone willing to train him in the ways of the fortress. Lastly, he'd tell his family. Not that he didn't want to tell them first, but if he already had everything set up then they couldn't tell him no. Well, that wasn't completely true. They could still very much tell him that he wasn't allowed, but this way he was less likely to let them dictate what he could do. Something he was terrible at. Gael usually gave in to the demands of his family. Mostly to get them to leave him alone or to shut up.

So to start down the road he wanted, Gael headed toward the small market that was near his home. It was there that he hoped to find a shield that he could use. If not then he might be forced to make his own, and that could take some time. Time he didn't have. If he wanted to go his own way then he needed things to go according to his plan. Obtain a shield, find a teacher, tell the family. In that order. He repeated it to himself over and over again to make sure it was stuck in his head. Shield. Teacher. Family. He was on his tenth time repeating it when he arrived at the market and his attention went directly to the weapon stalls.

From there he began his search. One would think that it would be easy to spot a shield among all the shining blades, but he was having some difficulty. Mostly because all the sharp weapons looked so intimidating. It was a sight well worth lingering on. There were even a few he picked up and tested in his hand. How the felt and moved. Gael could feel the testosterone pumping through him and the need to hack something down. However, it wasn't what he was looking for so he soon put it back down and went on to the next.

After an hour of being distracted by swords, spears, and everything else there he finally found a shield that fit his grip and was just the right weight for him to hold. Gael haggled with the seller to get a price he was comfortable with then paid for his new weapon of choice. With it in hand he turned away from the stall, waving and saying his thanks, and made his was toward the village. Now he needed to find himself a teacher so that he could set up training days and times. The young matori was even hoping he might have to be absent from home for a few days at a time to lessen the time he had to listen to his family.

It took some searching but Gael did manage to find someone willing to teach him the ways of using a shield in battle. While they weren't a full fledged fortress they did know how to fight like one. Taking the time to hash out when both would be available to practice they seemed to both agree that they could do most of the work and training around sun-down since the older man worked til then. Both also seemed to agree that the days should be spaced out and so they tried to find out a way to make the schedule work. One day at the beginning of the week and another in the middle then two more at the end. The last two would be endurance days meant to build up Gael's general muscle mass.

Once the layout for the week was made and both agreed to the days and times, Gael had only one thing left on his short list to do. He now needed to tell his family his plans. Not that it was something he was looking forward to. Instead he lingered for a time longer, asking questions about how to exercise on his own and what he could do to bulk up more. The elderly man told him to do runs on his off days to help his endurance and lifting to add to his mass.

Now with things to do he finally gave in and bid his mentor goodbye for the day. Tomorrow he would be back around sun-down to start down the path he chose. Gael, holding his shield proudly, headed home with slow steps. He took the time to steel his mind against any bad backlash from his siblings and even his father. Before long he found himself in front of his own house and could only stand in place staring. Forcing himself to take a deep breath he also moved the last few steps he needed to enter. This was his time to let his secret out.

He sat in the warm, glinting sand, his back firmly against a single palm tree as he was lost in deep thought. Gael's mind was thinking about Kani. The water tribeswoman that he had encountered a while ago. From the first time they met he had thought her to be very beautiful, he still did in fact. She was also kind, at least whenever he was around she was. The girl was playful and teasing as well. Something that he hadn't expected but was delighted to learn. As he leaned his head back the young matori male closed his amber colored eyes. Almost instantly he could see an image of Kani take shape in his mind's eye. Her curly hair, smooth skin and traditional matori skin markings, even the necklace that she wore. The necklace that had once belonged to his mother. A lovely, large blue jewel on a decorated cord. A gift that he'd given to her. Gael had said that he believed every girl deserved to own a gem. And he'd meant it.

A small smile broke out on his face. At the time he didn't know that he was going to hand over his mother's jewelry to her. However, he had not once thought that he had made a mistake in doing so. Even if he didn't end up with Kani in the end, he at least showed her that she deserved to own something so precious.

Shifting his weight a little bit, Gael re-positioned himself so that he could slouch a bit more and bend one leg up to keep him balanced better. With his hands in his lap he peeked open his eyes and looked around at the empty beach. The sun was sinking on the horizon so he figured that more people would be out and about, but it seemed that he was wrong. To him he never understood why the people in Matori didn't stop to enjoy their beautiful homeland. “Too busy trying to survive.” He surmised aloud without thinking.

It wasn't a wrong assumption. Most of his tribe was still working on rebuilding their lives and homes from the centuries long enslavement they had suffered at the hands of the Obans. Closing his eyes again, Gael tried to turn his thoughts to something else, something good. The good news he could tell Kani when he saw her again was one thing that came up. His family had accepted his decision to become a fortress, granted not all of them were particularly happy about it, but at least he didn't have to fight with them about it anymore. Nor would he be forced into following in his father's footsteps to become a metal smith.

The prentice figured that his friend would be happy for him about that at least. It meant no more fighting with his family. No more reason to avoid going home. And it also meant that he didn't have to worry about disappointing his father. All of that took a huge weight off his shoulders and he could share that happiness with Kani.

Of course, Gael would still go out on his walks in hopes that he run into her when she was shell hunting for her brother. It had become something he enjoyed. Bumping into her on the beach was always fun since he could pick on her for small things and get her to smile. That smile of hers could win hearts all across Matori and Gael had yet to decide if he liked the idea of sharing it with others or not.

A sharp, short snort came from him.

Decidedly not. He liked having that smile all to himself. With a grin spreading across his own features he shifted a bit more and lifted his hands up to behind his head. With such a leisurely posture he was slowly starting to fall asleep where he sat. And with Kani in his thoughts he was bound to have pleasant dreams.

The thought of him dreaming of his friend made him give a sudden chuckle. Not because he found the idea undesirable, but because he could only imagine the look on her face when he told her that he did. He had to wonder if she would blush and fall silent or if she would smack him for being so forward. It wasn't like he hid anything from her, at least not intentionally. What he did keep from her were things that he didn't feel comfortable with anyone knowing.

This had him opening his eyes and lowering his hands from behind his head slowly as he thought about it. Gael stared out at the fading sunset colors in the sky; wondering. There was something he kept from her that he could share. Or at least, something that he hadn't exactly spoken about in normal conversations. It would leave him feeling vulnerable and very exposed to her but he could share it. His thoughts.

The fact that he felt unwanted by his family for being the black sheep. Or that he blamed his youngest sister for his mother's death. No, he didn't really. He was just upset that his mother hadn't had the strength she needed to survive. He was mad at her for giving up on life so easily.

With a scoff, both at himself and his thoughts, he moved to get to his feet. It was time for him to return home now. After all, he had to sleep before dealing with his family in the morning and then training when the sun started to go down in the evening. There was so much for him to do that he worried he wouldn't be able to go see her. He'd have to make sure that he at least took the time to visit her. A small “hey there, glad you're ok” would do. Maybe even a “see you later.” Gael would also need to fill her in on his training so that she didn't think he was avoiding her.
