Y'know my ex-friend? The one who refuses to take medication because "his ADD isn't severe enough to warrant medication"?
He's now using the handle "neurodivergent" to describe himself, to help win more arguments against people online.
He "knows what oppression is like because he's neurodivergent".
Is it just me or is that pretty ******** insulting to everyone who DOES have a significant mental health issue?

Funny, I tried to find a definition for neurodivergent and I couldn't find one. Though, I did find a definition for "neurodiversity" which is basically an end-all term for the fact that different people have different ways of viewing/learning things due to the variances of the human ggenome, or something around those lines. But in no way was it used to describe people with mental disorders as a whole.

When in doubt, check urban dictionary. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=neurodivergentAlso see neurotypical and neuroatypical.

I like Urban Dictionary, but personally I don't like using it to get a definition. And the fact tthat people actually have to coin a new term because they don't want something wrong with them is kind of sad. I mean if you have a problem simply accept it and move on. I bring this up because I did some more research and saw that people brought it up because they refuse to believe that they have something wrong and that it's simply part of the diversity of people. In my mind that's like saying there's nothing wrong with a person born with a disfigured leg and blowing it off as normal human diversity. But I digress. Thanks for the links.

Um. Wow. confused
Also had no idea "neurodivergent" was a thing until this thread. Honestly, I find it to be rather ridiculous. And it's not like I'm trying to downplay the struggles of people with autism or mental health problems, either. My boyfriend is autistic, many of my friends are autistic, I'm pretty sure my ex had undiagnosed schizophrenia. Hell, I'm beginning to suspect and believe that even I have a mild form of Asperger's. It's just a silly way of trying to avoid "offensive labels," when really, the labels are simply diagnoses and not insults... emotion_eyebrow

Create a new word with a positive spin, rather than use "mental health problem" which has a negative spin. The most aggregious thing here is that there are tons of people self-diagnosing and then using the label "neurodivergent" to get preferential treatment or sympathy. emotion_facepalm The fact that my ex-friend could halt medication and live a normal life seems like a pretty solid indication that he's NOT neurodivergent. But he wants to be special.
