Gaia is not cheap to run, especially not if you want it run in any semblance of good condition. Therefore, special nice items are made available to people who will provide real money to help keep Gaia functioning. Gaia uses Gaia cash as one of several ways to try to keep afloat since the other ways alone aren't really cutting it.
