The myth that lemmings regularly hurl themselves off cliffs (they don't) was widely popularised by the makers of the Oscar-winning Disney documentary White Wilderness, who - lacking any real-life lemming suicides to film - decided to push a load of lemmings off a cliff into a river instead.

(Sorry I haven't been around at all. I've been very, very busy.)

Yeah, Disney. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can even do both. I certainly do. There's the lovely art they make, contrasted by the horrible stereotypes they perpetuate (even, it seems, inadvertantly, out of sheer ignorance! See the Princess and the Frog controversy.) and the idiotic business decisions they make. (They had a shot at filming the Harry Potter movies, since their publishing branch, Hyperion, has the American publishing rights, but the head of Disney at the time thought that concept was silly. So film rights went to Warner Bros, Disney spent years kicking themselves, and when the TV airing rights were up for grabs, they bought 'em from Warner Bros. for a pretty penny.) Incidentally, since the head of Pixar runs Disney animation right now, everybody, including rival corporations, are now willing to open up friendly negotiatons with Disney again. Those ongoing rumors of a Roger Rabbit prequel just got a little more plausible... smile

Disney even hired an Oscar winner to lead those little animals.

Jack Lemming.
