It is hard to teach over the Internet because there are different tones.

I'm not sure if it can be done over the Internet because there are certain tones that are a bit hard to pronounce if you aren't a native speaker... ( I learned THAT from trying to teach meh American friends that by ear...)

I'm studying Mandarin through software... I'd say I'm at an advantage because I already speak Vietnamese, so I've got experience with tonal languages...

There are four tones in Mandarin, and I believe the best way to learn them will be through this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8Ll7qTOmx0

There are many such videos on YouTube.

chinese-tools.com is also a great help.

i already know mandarin...both of my parents speak it(and so do i)
it is best if you listen to it cuz of all the diffferent tones...pinyin can only do so much
you can find "learn chinese" websites everywhere.

I speak madarin cause both of my parents speak it, but it's really hard to learn XP (try learning from one of those online software though).

There's technically 5 tones, including the staccato accent (i.e. like the 'ma' in "ni hao ma?") but let's not get into that. It's hardly different from the first tone.

I grew up here, but we're only allowed to use mandarin at home because my grandmother lives with us. She never learned English.

If you want to learn Mandarin, I suggest watching Asian Drama like Mars or something. wink
