Proper etiquette and gift ideas, please help.

OK, I have been invited to get to know my boyfriend's family. (MEEP!) His mother, who is an ultimate control freak, has invited me to dinner and to spend the night the day before we leave so she can take us to the airport the next morning.

What should I bring as a gift to the hostess? I don't really know anything about these people, and strangely enough, neither does her son. I asked him what sort of things they like but he can only tell me coffee, candles (for his mom only) and nothing about his dad.

If you have any ideas, this would be quite helpful indeed.

Hmmm, perhaps you could make up a little basket with coffee, candles, and other things in it? coffee mugs, chocolate-covered espresso beans, whatever else you can find at a gourmet coffee shop
