I'm new (as you can see by my lack of accesories) but I'm really intrested in this debate. I'd like to jump in if no one's gonna bite my head off. I'm a Christian, and yeah I just skimmed the discussion because at this time of night I don't have the attention span to read three pages of posts.
My opinion is God isn't indifferent to human suffering, but he gave us free will, so he won't interfere in the choices we make. This all comes down to him wanting us to choose to love him. He doesn't interfere because he gave the earth to us. Too bad we gave it to the serpent. Then he cared enough to give us a way back to him. This brings us to Jesus who either a)told the truth, b)was a liar, c)was delusional, or d)was insane. By the accounts of the four writers of the first four books of the new testament Jesus did miraculous things. If you don't believe them, look at the fact that even though the Bible was written over a large space of time, the things written throughout the Bible match up. To me, that and the experiences of me and my family prove to me that there is a God and He does love humanity. Plus, the alternative is worthless to consider. If I'm right, I go to Heaven and unfortunately, those who don't believe have made the choice to go somewhere else. If I'm wrong, after death I won't know.
But again that's just my opinion, and it's all good if you think I'm wrong. I just wanted to put my two-cents in sweatdrop .

I personally am an atheist, and believe this because of the fact that there isnt enough evidence that god exists, and there is too much evidence that he doesnt. i personally think that faith is a terrible reason to believe in god, when in reality, logic is the best way to judge the existance or outcome of anything. For people who dont know what to believe, but just believe in god because it gives them some sort of false sence of security is just plain old stupid. I know that believeing in god can make you feel safe, and give you something to hold onto in bad times, but my main theory is that if you live life, not worrying because of the fact that you believe there is an afterlife, there is a problem. so just live life like its your only one. Another thing i have to say, is something about jesus is unclear. IF jesus died for our so called sins, why do people still go to so called "Hell". i also think that in the 1/1000000000000000000% chance that god is real, he wouldnt send us to hell for using the logic that he apparently gave us when he created us.

I'm anti-religion

Bill Maher: The irony of religion is that because of its power to divert man to destructive courses, the world could actually come to an end. The plain fact is, religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge having in key decisions made by religious people. By irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. George Bush prayed a lot about Iraq, but he didn't learn a lot about it. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slaveholders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do. Most people would think it's wonderful when someone says, "I'm willing, Lord! I'll do whatever you want me to do!" Except that since there are no gods actually talking to us, that void is filled in by people with their own corruptions and limitations and agendas. And anyone who tells you they know, they just know what happens when you die, I promise you, you don't. How can I be so sure? Because I don't know, and you do not possess mental powers that I do not. The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble, and that's what man needs to be, considering that human history is just a litany of getting s**t dead wrong. This is why rational people, anti-religionists, must end their timidity and come out of the closet and assert themselves. And those who consider themselves only moderately religious really need to look in the mirror and realize that the solace and comfort that religion brings you comes at a horrible price. If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you'd resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a mafia wife, for the true devils of extremism that draw their legitimacy from the billions of their fellow travelers. If the world does come to an end here, or wherever, or if it limps into the future, decimated by the effects of religion-inspired nuclear terrorism, let's remember what the real problem was. We learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it. That's it. Grow up or die.

I'm a Christian and the reason I believe in God because he gives me comfort. So that might be (in my opinion) a logical reason why people believe in God.
