The sun dawned bright and cheerful as always. Its golden beams crept along the horizon, working their way across the fields and valleys, forests and mountains to awaken the world’s inhabitants. Tansy Drekk stirred from her slumber. The brilliant light lay directly upon her, making any further sleep impossible. I really wish the sun would wait a little bit longer, she thought to herself as she cautiously rose to her hooves, careful not to wake the stallion laying next to her. Waking people was the sun’s job. Not hers. Besides, he deserves the rest. The small mare glanced down at the other. Her glowing white eyes took in his sleeping frame. She noted the faint rise and fall of his chest with every breath he took. Noted how his hair fell pell mell over his face and neck, and how his large wings- wings that were very nearly, if not exactly, the same size as his body- gave a little twitch or a flap when he shifted. They were little things to notice, but they never failed to bring a smile to her face…such as the one now gracing her features.
Her gaze continued to move over him, drifting from his wings to his hair and then onto his peaceful face. From his face, her eyes roved down his neck, coming to a halt upon a star-shaped scar. Tansy’s smile faltered slightly. That scar…there were so many emotions it invoked in her, especially on this day in particular. That faded, puckered skin held a history in it- their history...

Tansy stood and she watched. Her eyes still focused on the area where the arrow had struck. It was hard to imagine how such a thing could cause so much damage. Too much damage. She had yet to hear Bram speak since that day. Not for his lack of trying, oh no, but for what the arrow had done to him. Even now, years after the occurrence, she could still hear the thwack of the pointed tip striking flesh, still hear the gasp of pain from him. If she closed her eyes, she could envision in the greatest detail the way the shaft, silver with blackened feathers at its end, stuck from his neck. The pain in his features had been immense as blood poured from the wound.
At the time, having been so young, the sight had frozen her. She had no clue how to react. Fear, sadness, guilt, anger had all vied for dominance at the forefront of her mind. In the end, it took the actions of another who had been nearby to get her into motion. They managed to get Bram to a healer yet there had never been any guarantees. Healers were only capable of so much. With that realization came the guilt, crashing over her in waves, causing her to question and worry. It became too much. Knowing that she was the cause of his injury made it simply too hard to face him; thus, she fled. But fate would not be denied…
Bram jerked awake, bringing her back to the here and now. She gave him a moment to adjust. “Nightmares again?” Her voice was quiet and soothing. Her glowing white eyes looked to his glowing blue ones, understanding and encouragement shining within them. Try. Just keep trying.
