The Weyr was full of excitement once again because Anakumath had risen for her first flight. Of course Feslengenth was pleased for Anakumath and the future hatchlings, on some level, but on another level she was kind of over it. This was just another example of a gold doing her job, and it wasn't even a particularly difficult or dangerous job. Fes, herself, did much the same thing and people just rolled their eyes. Granted, Fes would never lay eggs, and that was an important thing for Pern, but simply rising in flight wasn't any sort of thing.

Such were the tenor of the large green's thoughts as she drowsed in a perfect sunny patch. In the winter competition for the sunniest perches could be fierce, and Fes was pleased with herself for having nabbed one. It had involved waking up earlier than usual and enduring a chilly morning in order to enjoy the warmth of the afternoon. She didn't often get an entire day to relax and do nothing, and she was taking advantage of it.

A slight itch at the back of her head made her wonder if she was in need of oiling again. Like any dragon, Fes enjoyed being oiled, but with the increasing chill of he weather, her attempts to spare Noska hours spent outside working at the task meant that she had to perform all sorts of contortions to allow Noska to reach every inch of her hide without leaving the warmth and shelter of their weyr. It must be rough, being human and so vulnerable. Particularly since human spirits could be so valiant, despite their physical limitations. Noska was like that. It was part of why Fes loved her.

The green's eyes shifted to a contented blue as she thought about her human and put aside her resentment about the fuss over a gold just doing her job. She was a fine green with a superlative rider and a sunny spot. Things were good.

V indignant that her spot is occupied by a green, but polite enough about making it clear she expects the green to move.

F indignant at being expected to move, but willing to give way before age, not color. Makes the mistake of saying so.

V points out that there is a good deal of significance to her color, cites the number of clutches she has had, and her daughter's clutches, and how many lives they've saved compared to a young green's paltry numbers.

F upset by being made to feel so worthless, and also intimidated by V's show of queenliness, which remains despite her being small, chubby, and old. Turns to leave and is stopped.

V says she's disappointed by F's lack of spine, and asks how she thinks she's going to challenge her betters if she can barely stand up to them. Also points out that she'd have more success by being pleasant, rather than feisty.

F thinks that V's advice is contradictory, but manages to be polite and only ask if she could explain a little more.

V tells story about a time when being polite worked better than throwing a tantrum.

F listens, thanks her for sharing her story, and departs in haste.

V, certain she's done a good deed by educating this promising young green, settles in to doze.
